REAL-WORLD ENGAGEMENT
The Kent MBA maintains close links with the corporate world and we are committed togiving our students wide-ranging experiencesacross a spectrum of small, medium and largeorganisations in both private and public sectors.
Corporate enterprises have direct access to our students through our effective
relationships as defined by our engaging live case study programmes, internships,
consultancies, guest lectures and executive in-residence sessions.
We provide our students with recruitment activities, such as corporate
presentations and on-campus interviews, actively supported by a robust
platform of career-focused sessions throughout the academic year.
Our effective corporate relationships guarantee you valuable exposure to the
business world and provides corporate organisations with the opportunity to
work with and recruit talented future business leaders.
CumminsThe Kent MBA gives you the opportunity to deepen and develop your knowledge of
organisational operations and enables you to put your newly acquired aptitudes and
skills into real-world practice on live business issues presented by senior managers
from the participating organisations through Cummins live case study events. These
events are designed to enhance analytical, presentation and written skills in a time-
constrained environment.
Our successful Cummins live case study events were formally introduced as part of
the assessment in the International Business and Strategy modules on the Kent MBA
in 2011. The live case studies have brought immediate value to our students through
transferable learning practice and network building and at the same time, allowed
them to effectively provide reflection and learning on the business challenges for
Cummins.
“…It has provided us with theability to see the issues andchallenges from a completelydifferent perspective…Theseengagements with Kent BusinessSchool have allowed somefresh/blue sky thinking to beapplied to our own ideas. It hasdefinitely enriched the outcomes ofour projects and not just providedthe students with a learningopportunity, but also providedCummins with additionallearning. Kent County CouncilLinks between the Kent MBA and the public sector continue to grow with the launch of
the Kent Connects MBA Cohort Programme. This new link is an alliance of the county’s
public sector service providers working in collaboration with the Kent MBA on a wide
range of projects aimed at transferring business skills.
The Programme enables councils and other local authority agencies within Kent County
Council to access the expertise of our students. In return students receive invaluable
practical experience of the public sector operational and managerial environment,
which enables them to work with a number of project challenges and deliverables.
These provide real and relevant insight into how the sector is affected by current
economic challenges and changes.
The projects also provide students with the opportunity to grow tangible business
connections, gain a deeper understanding of the challenges public sector organisations
face, as well as sharpen their leadership and consultancy skills. The projects are
located throughout the region and provide a range of exciting challenges for Kent
MBA students.
Consultancy WeekConsultancy Week is an initiative of the Kent MBA and was launched in 2010/11.
Sponsored by the Transmanche Enterprise Network, this initiative provided a high-
quality consultancy and recommendation service to eight small and medium sized
enterprises. Consultancy Week offers businesses the opportunity to bring a business
problem to a team of Kent MBA students who make recommendations by providing
feedback in day-long interventions with each of the companies. The shared sense of
entrepreneurial dedication to business from the business owners and the involvement
and commitment of the students, contributes to high-quality, value-delivering output and
experience for all involved. Students benefit from the opportunity to apply their
academic and practical skills to a real-world situation.
Our approach to the Kent MBA Consultancy Week initiative has been to engage this
largely neglected market space with the experience of our students and their ability
to contribute effectively with recommendations to the concerns and problems of small
and medium enterprises.
“This is an innovative and exciting project…It gives studentsthe opportunity to work on realprojects and provides a betterunderstanding of the issuesaffecting local government. For the partners, the project providesan injection of critical thinkingand enables a new perspective to be brought to difficult problems.”

Ian Dennis (2007)Business Systems Manager
DS Smith Paper Ltd
“Beyond the recognised meaning of the MBA
acronym (Master of Business Administration) lies the
real rationale for going through the rigours of
the Executive MBA programme. For an IT expert
manager like myself, the MBA acronym really means
My Business Access/Authority. I come from a
background of growing professionally without the
discipline of a degree to provide me with structure.
Obviously, the MBA helps to fill in these gaps but it is
the Access/Authority part of the accreditation that is
key for me.
People in the business world like to put your name in
a box and, if you are recognised as the expert, then
you need additional knowledge and tools (and the
confidence to use them) to enable you to engage in
broader business initiatives. Therefore it is invaluable
to be involved in a programme that opens your eyes
to the latest business thinking, draws your attention
to related models and tool sets and, most
importantly, gives you an insight into how your fellow
students from around the world react to the
programme material.
All of which brings me finally to the ‘so what’
conclusion, in true Kent MBA style. After my Kent
MBA experience ended in 2007/08 my employer
went through a reorganisation. The Kent MBA
experience helped me to immediately step into an IT
infrastructure management role covering EMEA
region, working for a large US-centred
manufacturing business. After three years in that role
I have recently moved on to an IT business systems
manager role with a UK centred manufacturing
business. Each of the moves has been hugely
influenced by the learning experience of the Kent
MBA, as has the way in which I have worked and
contributed to the success of each of the
businesses involved.”

“Having a diverse professional background consisting
of general management and finance, I was looking
for an MBA to consolidate my future professional
development, broaden my business horizons, share my
experiences and gain an insight into the experiences
of others. I chose Kent Business School, driven by the
contagious enthusiasm and inspiration for business
demonstrated by the School’s MBA team.
The time constraints and the vast content of business
knowledge, combined with the true passion of tutors
to infuse the full-bodied flavour of every aspect of the
current commercial world, made the Kent MBA
experience extremely challenging, yet refreshing.
The module conveners delivered high-quality teaching,
enriched by their broad academic and industry
experiences, and the University’s world-class research.
The knowledge and contacts acquired during the
programme certainly enhanced my professional
capabilities and career prospects.
Apart from the incredible opportunity to interact with
peers within a multicultural environment, I had the
chance to engage in a live case study consultancy,
and later internship, with Cummins Power Generation
Kent – a multi-national enterprise (MNE) with a local
subsidiary. I am now employed by the company as
a project manager of the implementation of strategic
projects around the globe. The Kent MBA has given
me the confidence to fulfil my ambition of becoming
an effective, instrumental, inspiring and influential
leader in a global environment.
The Kent MBA experience enabled me to focus on
a career path by offering a field for reflection and a
platform for self-realisation and learning.”
