Counseling Connections

We are continuing our 15 Days of Caring Kindness Challenge here at Shadycrest! We are encouraging the students to participate in acts of kindness that affect their school, community and the world! There is also a really great book called Wonder by R.J. Palacio that was just made into a movie. This would be a wonderful book to read with your kids and there are many great discussions that can come out of this story. There is even a Wonder app that you can

download onto your phone! It is called “Daily Wonder.”

“When given the choice between being right or being kind,

choose kind.”

A BIG congratulations to our Spelling Bee contestants! Our top three finishers were: 1st – Hunter Golden , 2nd – Anthony Rodriguez , 3rd – Camden Slafka! We wish Hunter Golden good luck as he goes on to the District Spelling Bee this

month!

We will also continue to explore and demonstrate our GRIT

by being Safe, Responsible and Respectful!

From the Art Room

February is here! The students will be exploring how to

make prints using a variety of materials such as Gelli

Printing Plates provided by an Education Foundation

Grant I won in the spring of 2018. In honor of our first

Multicultural Night, we are branching out and studying art

from cultures around the world. Students will be learning

about art from Africa, Australia, Asia, South America, and

Europe. I can’t wait to see these on display throughout the

building.

If you have any magazines (such as cooking, travel, home

and garden etc.) you are not using, please send them to

the art room.

Please take a look at my webpage. There are links to many

great websites!

Thank you for your continued support of the Art program

at Shadycrest!

P.E. SCOOP There are many exciting things happening this month in P.E.! Third and fourth grade students are completing the components of our state mandated fitness testing, Fitnessgram. Also, students in grades K-4 are participating in a jump rope unit. Younger students will be introduced to basic jumping and rope turning skills while older students will be challenged with up to 30 different types of jumps! February is Heart Healthy month and we will be discussing interesting heart facts as well as some great ideas on how to be heart healthy.

* Save the Date for our JDRF Walk for Diabetes which will be held during specials on Friday, February 15th, and be on the lookout for information coming home on February 1st. Thank you in advance for supporting this service project and helping us promote awareness about diabetes!

* Congratulations to Ms. Hogue’s class for winning our Kindergarten Shoe-Tying Contest! We are so proud of you!

Let's have a happy, healthy 2019!

Coach Sanders and Coach Moreno

P.S. Don't forget those tennis shoes!

CLINIC NEWS

February is National Dental Health Month!

Lifelong habits begin at home. Make dental health part of your daily routine and share these reminders with your whole family:

Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, especially after breakfast and before bedtime. Drinking water after eating also helps to clear your teeth of food particles.

Floss every day. An adult should help children under the age of eight to floss. Older children should be ready to floss on their own.

Limit the number of times you eat snacks, especially the sticky ones and long lasting ones.

Visit a dentist regularly for a routine check up and a cleaning.

Protect your teeth by wearing a mouth guard when playing sports.

Don’t forget to change your tooth brush regularly, and after an illness. Sweet snack facts:

Eating a lot of snacks with sugar may cause cavities.

Every time you eat sugar, plaque in your mouth mixes with the sugar to make acid. The acid hurts the teeth and causes decay over time. This can be painful!

The school nurse can help you find a dentist for your family!

Reminders from the Attendance Office

If you receive a reminder email regarding absences, please

follow up by sending a note to the attendance office to cover your child’s absence. If you feel you have received the reminder

in error, please follow up by calling the school and discussing it with the attendance clerk. As always, you can monitor your

child’s attendance and set up email notifications through skyward family access.
