PRINCIPAL MESSAGE Looking forward to seeing everyone at our Christmas concert on Tuesday evening beginning at 7:00 p.m. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Parent Council will be selling raffle tickets and there will be a silver collection at the door, which helps offset the cost of costumes and items purchased for the Christmas concert. Thank you for supporting our Christmas concert! Thank you to the families who donated items to create our Christmas raffle baskets. Thank you to our families who consented to have their child take part in the Tell Them From Me survey that took place last week. We will use this information to help us plan to maintain a safe and positive school climate. I would like to congratulate our YR students for their kindness projects going on in the community. I am sure that the Rideau Park residents will enjoy the cards and the songs that you are delivering this week, as well as the baking that is being delivered to the every- day heroes in our community. Thank you for adopting a family for us as a school community to support! We look forward to seeing everyone back at school on January 7, 2019. Wheat King Players Visit On December 12, the grade 5/6 students received a visit from two current Wheat King players, Caiden Daley and team captain Stelio Mattheos. The players engaged in a conversation with the students about what it takes to become an elite level athlete, as well as the importance of education during the course of their lives (before and after their playing careers). The students were excited to learn about some of the off-ice activities that Caiden and Stelio engaged in, and were sur-prised to notice that many, such as gaming and hanging out with friends, were just the same as them!

The visit was capped off with each of the students getting an autographed bookmark and getting to take a group picture with the visiting celebrities. At the end of the session, the students and the Wheat King players expressed their appreciation for this experience!

What’s Happening in Ms. G’s Class? Ms. Giannopoulos’s class looks a little different this year! In addition to the rocking chairs, stools and beanbag chairs already in the room, additional beanbag chairs were added and a nice big rug that allows students more comfortable choices in work spaces. In science, Ms. Giannopoulos’s class just completed their unit on cells and systems. We learned about plant and animal cells and built our own models. Some students got creative and made their cell model out of cake! We enjoyed the treat after the scientific explanation! We also learned about the heart and its function within the circulatory system.

If you were to listen in on one of Ms. G’s classes during our algebra unit you might hear something like this: Ms. G: “What is the ultimate goal?” Students: “To get the variable by itself!” During the time spent on algebra, we learned the parts of an algebra equation, solved 1 and 2 step problems, as well as learned how to use the distributive property and combining like terms when necessary. Now we are moving on to fractions!

Our most recent piece in art has been our mosaic art. A mosaic is a piece of art or image made from the assembling of small pieces of any variety of materials. We used scrap paper and magazine pages. After viewing a variety of examples for inspiration, we began our task of creating a mosaic, which required a deal of great attention to detail. Although they are still a work in progress, they are looking fantastic!
