THE KING IS COMINGA Christmas Devotional for the Family

Day 3: Genesis 50:20Things went from bad to worse for God’s people. People were not very nice to one another--not even totheir own family. And this is exactly what the evil prince wanted, God’s family not to get along, andcertainly not to grow. If it grew, the New King would come, and that meant the end of the evil prince. Well,at the beginning of this story, a boy named Joseph, who was the youngest brother in his family, started tobrag about how great he would be and how he would be the strongest in the family someday. Joseph’sbrothers became very jealous of Joseph and sold him as a slave. Remember, these were God’s people, whowere not supposed to act like the evil prince! But they did, and their brother ended up in a completelydifferent country in a prison! But God was doing something, and it was really going to frustrate the evilprince and his wicked plan. God doesn’t let Joseph stay in prison for too long. God put him there toeventually meet the king of Egypt! The king of Egypt ends up really liking Joseph, and he likes him somuch that he puts him in charge of everything in Egypt. Then one day, Joseph’s family runs out of foodand needs to go to Egypt to buy some, and there they meet Joseph who invites his whole family to live inEgypt with him! The evil prince made a wicked plan to end the hope of the New King, but God was workingtoo, and his plan was stronger. The New King was going to come, and the evil prince became frightened. Q1: Why were Joseph’s brothers mean to him, and how did this make the evil prince happy? Q2: What did God do for Joseph after he was put in prison? How does this end up helping Joseph’s family?Q3: How was God’s plan for Joseph stronger or better than what the evil prince tried to do?

Day 4: 1 Samuel 17You might think things get better, but they don’t just yet. God’s people begin to fight each other again. Now because things get unruly, God’s people ask for a king, but it is not time for the true King to come. SoGod sends them a king to prepare them for the New King. He sends them David. Through David, God givesus a picture of the King to come and shows us how he will defeat the evil prince. David, a young shepherd, fights a giant warrior named Goliath who was going to destroy God’s people. If God’s people were killed, who would come to defeat the evil prince to fulfill God’s promise? David trusts in God, the Great King, togive him power to win the fight. David shoots Goliath down with his sling and kills Goliath using Goliath’sown weapon, a huge sword with which he cuts off the giant’s head! The New King will come like David, trusting God for his power and victory, defeating the evil prince using the prince’s own deadly weapon. Q1: Who is the king that God sends to his people? Q2: Who does David fight, and how does he defeat him?Q3: How will the New King be like David?

Day 5: Isaiah 7:10-15 and 9:2-7David’s sons did not make good kings. Most of them ended up serving the evil prince instead of the GreatKing! One of David’s descendants named Ahaz was the king when God was speaking to Isaiah, God’s prophet.A prophet is someone who tells God’s people what God wants them to know. Ahaz was in a difficult situation. He was surrounded by enemies; three other countries wanted to hurt him and his people. God told Isaiah totell the king that if he trusted God, the Great King, like David did, then everyone would be saved. He couldsave him from anything if Ahaz was willing to ask for it. Ahaz refused to listen to Isaiah, but that did not stopGod from bringing this promise: Immanuel (a name that means “God is with us”) is coming. He will be bornfrom a virgin, and will come to be the New King! God’s promised “Immanuel” will defeat the evil prince andall his servants once and for all and bring peace forever to the whole world.” Q1: Was Ahaz a good king like David? Q2: What did Isaiah, God’s prophet, tell Ahaz that God could do for him?Q3: What promise does God make about his “Immanuel”?

Day 6: Micah 5:2-5aAt around the same time, another prophet of God had a similar message. God’s people were stuck in their sinagain; they kept making the same mistake of following the evil prince, and it seemed like there was no wayout. Micah, God’s prophet, said that God had a way to save them. He told God’s people that the New King iscoming! Even though they thought the New King would never come, God said that he is coming and will beborn in the little town of Bethlehem, where David was born. And like David, the New King will be known as ashepherd. He will protect his people from the evil prince like a shepherd protects his sheep from harm. God’speople will have peace, rest, and joy forever together because the King is coming to be with us, and he willnever leave us. Q1: What message does Micah have for God’s people who are stuck in their sin?Q2: Where will this New King be born?Q3: How will the New King be like David?

After Isaiah and Micah, even more people tell of God’s promise of the coming King. And now, the time isfinally here. The New King has come just like he said he would! He has come from Abraham and David, bornin Bethlehem! But he didn’t come like everybody thought he would; he came as a baby. He was not born in apalace, where you might expect a king to be born but in a stable. His name is Jesus, which means “delivereror savior.” The angels came to the shepherds to invite them to see the Shepherd-King, like David, the Onewho will save and protect them and never leave them. The star led the magi to his home, and they honoredthe New King with kingly gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The New King is here, he has finally come, andnothing will ever be the same. And today we celebrate when he came into this world, an event God’s peoplehad been expecting and hoping to see for thousands of years! Our New King came to set us free, to defeatthe evil prince, and to give us our crowns back! There will be no more tears--only smiling and the brightest,never-ending joy. Where is he today? He sits on his throne in Heaven and rules this whole world. Today he isgathering his people like a shepherd gathers their sheep until he gathers the very last one. And when hedoes, we will all see him and be with him forever. Imagine that day with the King, what will you do when youmeet him face to face? Q1- What was unexpected about the New King’s birth?Q2- What is the New King’s name, and what does it mean?Q3- Why do we celebrate Jesus’ birth? What did it mean to God’s people, and what does it mean to you?
