Message from The Kingdom Insider

The Kingdom Insider has changed! Instead of packing so much information into a single issue, we will now be spreading it out amongst multiple issues, but bringing it to you more often. This also allows us to keep things more current.

Let us know what you think by contacting us at thekingdominsider.com!

WHERE IN…

We love all the details of the Disney parks. Do you know where in the Disneyland®

Resort you would find this?

(Answer on back page)

Disneyland Alumni Club Be a Member of the Club ... ...That's Made for You and Me

When Disney University founder Van France and then-Disneyland president Dick Nunis recognized that Cast Members who left the Park for other careers would always feel connected, they came up with the idea to create the Disneyland Alumni Club. That was in 1983.

Today, the Disneyland Alumni Club continues to look for ways to keep the cast connected—from gala celebrations to speaker events to movie screenings. The club also carries on the tradition of supporting the community through charities, like the current designee, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Fullerton, CA.

A Mouse Clubhouse Interview:

Harriet Burns- Building Disneyland’s Castle

Scott Wolf: Walt Disney had you work on Sleeping Beauty Castle, right?

Harriet Burns: Yes. At first he didn’t know what colors he was going to paint it or anything. He had ideas and he didn’t know how to finish them or if they would be finishable. So he had Eyvind Earle doing one castle like blacks and reds and very intense colors and then he had Herbie (Herb Ryman) doing the pink and blue, and the blue roofs, and in the long run he felt that that would be better because the blue would blend with the sky, and just go on up. So he felt that would be more ethereal or something, you know that it would be more appropriate for the part. At first those notions weren’t set yet so he had us doing things like that. You know, he was inspired by Neuschwanstein in Bavaria? Mad Ludwig’s castle.

SW: You and Fred built all the original concept models for the castle, right?

HB: Fred did most of the hard work and I would do everything from like the little stone façade and all of the little stuff, a mishmash… little eaves, things on the turrets and the turrets themselves. One of the assignments was to do the big one… we did little (castle models) first. Fred did little ones. Then Fred did the bigger ones, like half inch scale, or something then we did the real big one, the one that used to be in the Gallery at Disneyland®. When I say “we,” it’s mainly Fred but I worked on it. I did a lot of little stuff.

Fred did one tiny one that’s about nine inches or something. It’s small. In fact, Marvin Davis and Marjorie, Marvin’s wife Marjorie was Walt Disney’s niece, they had it gilded for Lillian (Walt’s wife) for a Christmas gift one year.

SCOTT’S NOTE: Harriet was one of my favorite people to talk with about Disney. She was always an absolute delight! Harriet passed away in 2008, but so much of her presence is still all around the Disney Resorts. The next time you’re visiting Walt Disney World® and the Haunted Mansion in the Magic Kingdom®, look for two comedic tombstones on display in the queue as a little tribute, with the names “Good Old Fred” and “Our Haunting Harriet!”

THROWBACK

This photo of Mission to Mars in Disneyland (below) is a throwback to 20 years ago… 1994! In this attraction, guests could view the monitor above to see where they are heading (such as Mars) and on the bottom screen they would see where they are leaving (such as Earth). The chairs would vibrate during takeoff and fill with air and deflate to simulate g-force during the journey.

Pete Renoudet was the voice of the attraction narrator, Third Officer Collins. Pete has provided numerous voices for the parks including Henry the bear for the Country Bear Jamboree. He once told me Mission to Mars was unique because, “It was one of the few times that I was able to use my own voice instead of a character voice.”

Today Mission to Mars has been replaced by Redd Rockett’s Pizza Port in Disneyland and Stitch's Great Escape! in the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World.

Be sure to visit the Grand Floridian during the holidays. There’s a giant gingerbread house and Cast Members can be seen roasting chestnuts on an open fire.

Take a screen shot of your My Disney Experience app schedule every morning and set it as your background or lock screen. It makes it super convenient and might save your battery.

Try the Hidden Mickey Hunt at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge! Ask a front desk Cast Member for a clue sheet to help you on your quest. If you complete the challenge, you’ll get a certificate and, possibly, a prize!

The barbershop at Magic Kingdom Park is a real barbershop. If you have your child’s fir haircut there you will receive embroidered "First Haircut" ears, certificate and a lock of hair.

Here’s a tip that will widen your knowledge of how to take photos in darker situations. Go wide! Because of the settings necessary for taking handheld pictures in the dark without a flash, pictures are more likely to be blurry due to the natural shaking of your hands. When you zoom in for your photo, it’s not just the subject in the image that is magnified, but so is your shakiness.

Feel free to contact us at thekingdominsider.com and let us know if these tips helped!

While moving aboard the Disneyland Railroad, this photo was taken with a Sony RX 100 II camera with the following settings: ISO 6400, Shutter speed 1/100, Aperture 1.8.

Our photo on the first page of The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney’s Hollywood Studios (which closes this month) was taken with a Sony RX 100 II camera with the following settings: ISO 3200, Shutter speed 1/40, Aperture 1.8 and the exposure was lightened using photo editing software.
