To everyone at Christ the King: I was asked to write a note to introduce myself to you. You’ve already been told that I was a social worker for many years before going to seminary; that I just graduated, and that I had been serving at Trinity in St. Peter at the time of my call to CTK. You might also like to know that I’ve lived in this area all my life. My husband, Steve, and I were “high school sweethearts” at Lake Crystal High School and we have celebrated 32 years of marriage. We have three young adult children, one son-in-law and one grandson. Unfortunately, they all live 4-6 hours away! For the past seven years we have lived just north of Rapidan. Until coming to CTK I’ve been a member of the church I was born and raised in, Our Savior’s in Butternut, between Lake Crystal and Madelia. I have more hobbies than time. Most importantly, I am thrilled to be at CTK and thank you all for your warm welcome! Please excuse me when I keep asking you for your name while I work to put faces and names together! 3rd Annual Summer Block Party

The 3rd Annual Christ the King Summer Block Party will be held on Friday, August 28 from 5:00-9:00pm in the McConnell Street parking lot! There will be live music, food and beverage, games, activities for kids and much more! We’re looking for volunteers that would be able to help with set up, tear down, face-painting, monitoring games and the bounce house. If you’re able and interested, please contact Justine Carlson. Missio Dei by Pastor Trish

Beginning this month, we are embarking on a multi-week sermon series on the book of Ephesians. With that in mind, here is some background on this particular piece of scripture. Although we call this book “Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians,” Bible scholars aren’t convinced that Paul actually wrote this letter. This is also true of some of the other letters in the New Testament that are attributed to Paul, as well as the historical situation that is reflected in the letter. There is also some uncertainty as to whether this letter was written specifically to the church at Ephesus or if it was a more circular letter intended for a larger audience. Such uncertainty however, doesn’t detract from the words of the letter itself. When was it written? If it was written by Paul, it was likely written later in his ministry during a time of imprisonment, probably in the early 60’s C.E. If a student of Paul wrote it, then it was likely written a little later in but before the end of the 1st century. The city of Ephesus itself was large (about 250,000 people); starting out as a Greek colony and eventually becoming the capital of the Roman province of Asia. It had a thriving harbor and a strategic location for land trade routes as well and offered some impressive structures including theater, stadium, gates, and one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the temple to Artemis/Diana. The letter itself was written to a Gentile audience and came at a time when the early church was realizing that Christ may not be returning as soon as they initially had anticipated. Ephesians reminds its readers that even if Christ is not physically present, He is still present and working on behalf of faithful believers. This work includes not just reconciling believers to God but also reconciling believers to one another, including Jews and Gentiles. Ephesians assures us all of God’s abundant and gracious activity through humankind and offers us one of our most basic Lutheran understandings: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God – not the result of works, so that no one may boast.” (2:8-9) This letter reminds us to live in response to this gift of grace by speaking the truth in love, living peacefully with one another and serving one another and separating ourselves from pagan influences. Ephesians has in it a “cosmic” message as well: the church bears witness to God’s wisdom, and believers receive the armor of God to battle “against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (6:13) This, along with the relationship between the grace of God and the good works of human beings are a couple of the themes you are likely to hear in the coming weeks. Come along as we dig into this short, but densely packed book that draws on early Christian hymns and scripture from the Old Testament to celebrate the church and our life as believers in the universal community of faith.

The Mankato Area Community Band is performing free outdoor concerts on Tuesdays this summer at

7:30pm at the band shell in Sibley Park. The concerts are great for all ages and feature a variety of music

and children’s marches each week. Concerts will be held (weather permitting) on July 7, 14, & 21. Please

Summer Organ Recital Series

Quilts on Display The Christ the King Quilters have made some beautiful quilts that will be auctioned off at quilt auctions at

Green Lake Bible Camp on July 25, Okoboji Bible Camp and Good Earth Village on October 29. Look for

the Green Lake quilts, which can be bid on, on display at Christ the King on Sunday, June 28.

Christ the King’s Proclaim Commission is looking for members to join for the 2015-2016 year. The

commission is focused on proclaiming the good news and sharing the word on the great ministry taking

place at Christ the King. If you’re interested in sharing ideas and participating in communications at church

in print, web, social media and a variety of other ways, please contact Devin Rubink at 320-293-3589.

Support CTK Youth

There are still opportunities to audition for this year’s children’s summer musical, “Ultimate Superstar.”

youth in grades 1-12 are welcome. Please register online. Rehearsals will be held August 10-14 from 1:00-

4:30pm. Performances will be during services on August 15-16.

From July 15-19, 46 youth from Christ the King and Messiah Lutheran will be heading to Detroit for the National Youth Gathering. During this week, they’ll gain valuable experiences through ministry, exploratory & interactive learning and engaging speakers & musicians. Donations are still being accepted to help cover the costs associated with the trip. There will be a gas can located in the narthex for donations or they can be dropped off in the church office. Thank you for all your continued support and prayers for our youth.

The Sioux Trails chapter of the American Guild of Organists (STAGO) will conclude the first half of their annual summer recital series in the Worship Center at Christ the King on Tuesday, July 7. The second half of the series will be held on Tuesdays at Bethlehem Lutheran Church (720 S. 2nd St., Mankato) beginning on July 14 and running through August 11. Each recital, featuring a different member each week, is about 30-40 minutes and begins at 12:10pm. All are welcome to attend these free events.

Vacation Bible School!

This summer at Vacation Bible School we will once again be collecting school supplies. If you or someone you know is in need of school supplies, please contact Mandy at mandyr@ctkmankato.org.

6th Grade at CTK Beginning this fall 6th grade will become the first year of CLUB (confirmation). 6th graders will meet as a large group, along with CLUB 78, in the Worship Center immediately following the 6pm worship. They will then meet as small groups in the Community Room. All 6th grade parents will be asked to be small group Guides during the course of the year. More information about this will come via email in August.

Rainbow Room, JAM, Kids Klub and CLUB Registration Registration for fall education ministries is now available online. Please visit the CTK website for the registration links. This year we will be asking for volunteers for JAM and Kids Klub like we do in the Rainbow Room. Parents will be put on a volunteer Shepherd/Guide schedule. If you are unable to help on the day you are scheduled, you simply switch with another parent. This has worked wonderfully in the Rainbow Room both on Sunday and Wednesday, and we look forward to this success at both JAM and Kids Klub. THE PRAYER THAT CHANGED MY LIFE

Years ago I traveled to San Antonio to meet with

a friend and spiritual mentor. While we enjoyed a lunch

of great Mexican food, we caught up on each other’s

lives and ministries. Later, with full stomachs and warm

hearts, we walked out of the restaurant to say our

farewells and head our respective ways. But my mentor

wasn’t quite finished with me. He asked me to join him

in his old, beat-up Ford Bronco for a few moments of

prayer. I gladly complied. Those few moments marked

me forever.

My mentor asked God for something I had never

heard before. He prayed that I would love to pray. He

prayed that I would enjoy praying. He prayed that it

would be easy for me to pray. His words blew me

away. I had never before thought about praying about

my prayer life. But I’ve been praying about it ever since.

The prophet Isaiah spoke an amazing promise to

Gentiles who embraced the God of Israel: God would

bring them to His holy mountain (a metaphor for His

holy presence) and would make them joyful in His house

of prayer (see Isaiah 56:6–7). What a beautiful image!

For many of us, prayer is drudgery, work, and flat-

out boring. Most Christians would rather endure a

root canal than be forced to spend an hour in prayer.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Prayer doesn’t

have to be an hour of hard labor.

Start praying for God to help you love prayer.

Use the language of Isaiah and ask God to make you

joyful in His house of prayer. God will honor your

request. I know, because over the last 20 years He has

answered mine. I can trace my desire to pray and my joy

in prayer all the way back to those few moments in that

Bronco. God honored my mentor’s prayers for me, and

He’s been honoring mine ever since.

O God, give me a heart of prayer. Let prayer be easy

for me. Help me see it as a joy, not labor, and a

privilege, not a chore. Precious God, do as Your Word

promises. Make me joyful in Your house of prayer!
