[The Klemantaski collection]The Klemantaski Collection is one of the world's largest and most varied libraries of historic motorsports and motor racing photography.

Photo: Fangio at Monaco, Ferrari D50, 1956

In the early morning practice session Juan Manuel Fangio drifts the Ferrari D50 (nee Lancia) around Mirabeau, his right front wheel just a few centimeters from the curbing, and is captured by Klemantaski from a hotel balcony in the oblique dawn light. This one of of a series of similar shots: no one else was as precise in their car placement as the World Champion. Fangio got pole and fast lap at Monaco, though Moss won the race. Nonetheless, Fangio went on to win the 1956 World Championship for Ferrari, his fourth of five titles.

This collector's print is of the iconic Can-Am Chaparral 2E. Shot at Mosport, Canada, with Phil Hill at the wheel in 1966. The 2E stunned many observers when it appeared the year this image was taken because it incorporated aerodynamic ideas with which many spectators were unfamiliar. The high inverted wing was operable by a pedal in the cockpit. On straights the driver trimmed the wing for minimum drag; entering turns the wing was angled for significant downforce. There were more innovations, but suffice it to say the Chaparral 2E lit the path to modern race car design.

Moss won the race by 3.6 sec over Ritchie Ginther in the debuting Ferrari 156 Sharknose, and Phil Hill (on his way to the championship) also in a Ferrari 156. This race had a veritable Who's Who of drivers, including Von Trips, Gurney, McLaren, Herrman, Clark, Surtees, Bonnier, Brooks, Brabham, Gregory and Graham Hill. Grid places were guaranteed to works teams, but Moss, driving for privateer Rob Walker, had to earn his spot. And earn he did, getting the pole. He also set fast lap, despite the fact that the Lotus 18 was in its second year, was Chapman's first mid-engined car and was generally viewed as underpowered.

This race, the oldest in the United Kingdom, had now been organized for GT cars, modifying its former status as an international sports car race. Six Ferrari 250GT SWBs (eight were originally entered) squared off against two Aston Martin DB4GTs. Stirling Moss, having now recovered from his serious practice crash at the Belgian Grand Prix, walked away with the win, followed by the two Aston Martins. After the race Moss claimed that he had spent the race listening to the radio in the Rob Walker 250GT (not the radio antenna!).
