MINUTES OF THE HRLRC BOARD MEETING 9/14/02

Call to order by President Bev Schnell at 3:10 pm at the residence of Cheryl Wellnitz. In attendance: Angela Ewald, Cindy Skiba, Cheryl Wellnitz, Mary MacLean, Bev Schnell, Nancy Chargo, Cathy Culpert. Guests: Judy Merians, Annie Cogo, Helen Bronson. Old Busines: Minutes from the previous General meeting of the HRLRC were not available. There was no report from the Corresponding Secretary. New Business: There was discussion regarding the use of MBF shows in Port Huron as an adjunct venue for HRLRC specialty shows. There was no consensus, nor vote. Specialty Report: Mike Rathsburg will be unable to transport the show trailer to the show site. Annie Cogo has agreed to transport the trailer to the site. The ribbons for the Obedience ring will be available in time. Web Site Report: In lieu of monetary remuneration for the maintenance of the HRLRC Web Site, Laura Reich has requested her posting on the Breeder’s Club Directory be provided. The Board votes unanimously for said request. Other Business: As previously discussed at the general membership meeting, 2 sweatshirts emblazoned with the club logo were sent as a raffle gift to the LRC on behalf of the HRLRC by Pauline Mortier. At the request of the Show Chairman, Jeanine Asch’s aunt has

embroidered the club logo on tote bags, to be considered as Judges’ gifts. The embroidery was approved, but alternate tote bags were purchased by the Show Chair. Annie will also follow up with the gifts for the judges. Nancy Chargo researched the possibility of doing something in conjunction with the GCKC Show, but this would be difficult due the the AKC ruling that a specialty club may only host two specialty shows per calendar year. Sweepstakes and supported entry for both days at the GCKC show would however be possible. Meeting was adjourned by President Schnell at 3:55 p.m. Respectfully submitted by Mary MacLean for Jeanine Asch

CLUB BOARD MEETING 10/15/02 A board meeting of the HRLRC was held at Shap’s Restaurant. Meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m. by President Beverly Schnell.

Members in attendance were: George and Beverly Schnell, Cheryl Wellnitz, Sheila Norgren, Cathy Culpert, Angela Ewald, Helen Bronson, Nancy Chargo, Annie Cogo and Jeanine Asch. The minutes from the September meeting were approved as read. The treasurer’s report was approved as read. Specialty Report: Annie mentioned that there were not enough entries received to cover expenses. For the future, we could consider not having foreign judges to save on airfare. It was also suggested that the fall specialty could be moved back to the Monroe Fairgrounds. Annie thanked everyone that helped out. A sub-committee was created to decide on judging panels for future shows. Annie has agreed to chair the 2003 fall specialty. Expenses for the obedience judge still need to be straightened out. Angela received a note from a fall specialty exhibitor complimenting us on a nice show. Sheila and Cathy did a wonderful job on the raffle. A sizable amount of money was generated from it. An election committee needs to be formed to determine the panel of officers and board members. The Christmas Part will be a potluck held Saturday, December 7 at the home of Sheila and Norm Norgren at 6 p.m. Please bring a dish to pass and a gift for the gift exchange. For members who have not yet renewed their membership, a notice should be sent out as a reminder. Since some people do not access the newsletter online, if they wish to receive a hard copy of the newsletter, they need to notify the editor. New Business: The application for the 2003 spring specialty was received late by AKC. Consequently, a $50 fine has been assessed to us. The club will pay this fee.

For the spring specialty, it may be a possibility to change if from being held along with the DKC show and instead hold it in conjunction with the GCKC shows. We could possibly have back-to-back shows in conjunction with GCKC and not hold a separate specialty in the fall. A motion was made to adjourn the meeting at 8 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Jeanine Asch, Recording Secretary

How Labs See Other Dogs

BRITTANY: Emotionally arrested, will do anything to get attention---proof positive that Brittanies (unlike Labs) have

RULES FOR USING BAIT

By Libbye Miller, DVM (submitted by Jeanine Asch)

1. All bait will be weighed and measured by the ring stewards befor the class begins. Bait must be cut into chunks of not more than 6 x 6 x 6 inches nor less than 0.5 x 0.5 x 0.5 cm. Bait will be weighed on an electronic scale and may not weigh more than a 6-9 month Chihuahua puppy. Metric and English system rulers, gram scale, and puppy must be provided by the show giving club.

2. Bait shall not be overly odiferous, though it may be slightly enhanced with Feller’s Scent O’Meat. The texture should be solid, exfoliating neither slime nor flake. The guideline should be “Would a non dog person throw up if they caught a whiff of this bait”.

3. In an effort to promote form to function, bait should be appropriate to the breed whenever possible. Sheep herding breeds should have a lamb based bait. Cattle dogs should go with a beef product. Breeds which historically worked multiple forms of livestock may choose from their smorgasbord of livestock. Sporting dogs may bait to either wing or meat of their appointed prey.

4. Frozen, reused birds not allowed. Working dogs who have their primary historic function as guardian dogs are not required to use human flesh and may substitute a protein of choice. Terriers may use vermin pelt only, no live rats are to be pressed into cubes of the proper dimensions. Hounds must use their historic prey unless said prey is extinct

Page 9: THE LAB REPORT - Huron River Labrador Retriever Club€¦ ·  · 2008-06-24THE LAB REPORT NOVEMBER 2002 THE HURON RIVER LABRADOR RETRIEVER CLUB, ... mmaclean55@hotmail.com Sheila

or endangered. The Non-sporting group will just have to muddle through on an individual basis as usual. Toy dogs to bait to a fine goose live pate or bon bon of choice.

5. Bait should have proper cuboid shape so that it may be easily removed from the ring. Sticky, stringy, or cheesy texture is disqualifying. Show giving club to provide on Baitboni unit for each two rings plus extra dedicated units for any ring used by Dobes, Rotties or other know free flinging breeds.

6. Bait not to be offered during the oral exam under penalty of death. 7. Handlers flinging bait which strikes a judge or spectator to be excused. Three excusals for flagrant flinging to result

in permanent disqualification.

CANINE GENOME FEATURED IN PBS DOCUMENTARY Submitted by Michelle VeuCasovic

Aurora, Ohio . . . The canine genome sequence will be the subject of a PBS documentary feature to air the week of November 22, 2002. As part of a series called The Secrets of the Sequence, the canine genome will be discussed by scientists and dog breeders during the documentary feature. Scientists, dog breeders and representatives from the AKC Canine Health Foundation were interviewed for the program at numerous locations, including the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, The Institute for Genome Research in Washington, D.C., and the Steel Valley Cluster in Canfield, Ohio. The series of shows now playing on public television stations around the country is a weekly television feature exploring current discoveries in the life sciences. The programs bring viewers some of the astounding discoveries that are emerging each day from laboratories around the world. The program is hosted by Lucky Severson with the assistance of the talking e-book, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Genome. For information on your local public television viewing schedule log onto www.wardtv.com or visit www.akcchf.org. The mission of the AKC Canine Health Foundation is to develop significant resources for basic and applied health programs with emphasis on canine genetics to improve the quality of life for dogs and their owners. For more information about the work of the Foundation and how to donate, call toll-free 1-888-682-9696 or visit the website: www.akcchf.org.
