After a very different and somewhat unexpected end to last year, with all our music lessons and activities moving online using Zoom, we are looking forward to the Lady Barbirolli Society’s fourth year within the background of a very different musical landscape.

With COVID having had such an impact in terms of worldwide music making, we are determined to keep giving Moreton pupils access to the high level tuition they are used to as well as continue to offer opportunities for enrichment through virtual masterclasses.

In the Autumn term, while we make a gradual transition back f rom online lessons to on-site lessons, and while all the pupils get used to being back at school, music will play a vital part in allowing pupils to have time to be creative and express themselves while making this adjustment.

Chamber MusicIn addition to this month’s events, we will continue to offer ensemble opportunities to pupils, with our in-house music making focusing on working in small groups within the school bubbles. Our musicianship programme will be offering a comprehensive range of small groups (duets, trios, quartets) across all year groups to any player f rom Grade 3 upwards. Choral sessions will also include work on vocal health and dalcroze.

MusicianshipTo enhance our enrichment programme we will be offering general musicianship sessions incorporating music appreciation, historical study, looking at performing techniques and other aspects of music as well as dealing with performance anxiety.

Gareth ‘Big G’ Lumbers devotes a large amount of his time performing, recording and continuous touring around Europe with artist Myles Sanko. As the long term established sax and flute chair for acclaimed breakout soul sensation Myles Sanko, Gareth has performed alongside Myles in prestigious venues across Europe.

An alumni of the internationally renowned Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, Gareth continues to pass on his creative flair and musical expertise through his committed teaching.

Following a pilot exam over the summer, the ABRSM will hold its f irst session of online theory exams for Grades 1-5. Grades 6-8 will remain as paper exams which will run if they ‘can be offered safely according to the most up to date government guidance in the UK and Ireland’. Watch this space…!

Richard Coxon, head of Vocal Studies at Cheltenham College, is one of Britain’s most exciting and versatile Opera singers of his generation.

Richard Studied at the at the Royal Northern College of Music and made his professional operatic debut with Scottish Opera singing Flavio in Norma, subsequently spending three years with the Company as Principal Tenor.

Richard f requently performs at the ROH, Glyndebourne Festival and ENO.
