Pasco County could soon be zoomingthrough the 21st century’s technology revo-lution at lightning speeds as the nation’sfirst smart gigabit community.
More than 7,800 acres in central andeastern Pasco County are slated to becomea state-approved special development dis-trict, overseen locally and focusing on a landuse plan that will embed state-of-the-arttechnology into future residential and com-mercial developments.
The district is known as a connected-citycorridor. Interstate 75, State Road 52, CurleyRoad and Overpass Road border the district.

Members of Wesley Chapel High School’scross-country teams led a solemn proces-sion around the school’s track on Dec. 11 tohonor the memory of Jaret Harshman.
The 15-year-old died from injuries sus-tained in a Dec. 9 car accident.
Shortly after the accident, his father, MikeHarshman, shared the news of his son’sdeath on Facebook.
After first apologizing for the shockingnature of the post, Mike Harshman, ofWesley Chapel, wrote: “This evening on hisway to church with friends, our oldest sonJaret was killed in a fatal car accident. Hewas just shy of his 16th birthday on Dec. 28.Kristi and I are numb and distraught - itseems surreal to us. We love Jaret, and are soproud of him - a terrible hole will be felt inour family forever, and we are still in shockover this. But we take great comfort in ourfaith, believing he was welcomed home intothe arms of Christ.”
In the post, Mike Harshman, who is apreacher, also asked for prayers for the twoboys that Jaret was riding with, Ryan andMichael Miller, also of Wesley Chapel.
Michael Miller “was in surgery for hoursand appears to have a long recovery fromhis injuries,” the post says. It also notes thatRyan Miller “will have to deal with the emo-tions he will face. We love those 2 boys likeour own sons, and will continue to embracethem as this will be a difficult road for themas well …”
According to a report from the FloridaHighway Patrol, 18-year-old Ryan Miller wasdriving a 2006 Chevy Aveo north onCulbreath Road, approaching a stop sign atthe intersection County Road 572 (PowellRoad) around 6:18 p.m., on Dec. 9.
Meanwhile, Christopher Reed Russell,25, of Spring Hill was driving his 2014Dodge Ram on County Road 572.
Miller failed to stop at the stop sign andtraveled into the pathway of Russell’s vehi-cle, according to the Florida Highway Patrolreport. Charges are pending.
During the memorial at the school, mem-bers of the cross-country teams carried apaper banner containing hundreds of trib-utes to Jaret.
The messages were printed in tiny let-ters, or scrawled in giant cursive. Theywere written with markers or pens in
green, red, black, blue and pink.The posts expressed sorrow at Jaret’s
death, gratitude for having known him andhope for him to have a new life in heaven.
Here’s how Nicole put it: “Jaret, you al-ways brightened up my day and lit thewhole room up with your smile. You wereone of the best people I ever got to know.Love you J. Harsh.”

Helping children who are in need isnothing new for the staff members atCentennial Middle School – they’ve beendoing that for years.
But, in recent years, Marty Pekarek, whochairs the Dade City school’s Assist, Believeand Care program, has noticed that childrenare asking for life’s essentials.
“They ask for food and clothing,” shesaid.
Their families need blankets, too, saidPekarek. Children in homes without heathave told school staff that they pile clotheson their bed to stay warm on cold nights.
Sometimes, a child’s request can beheartbreaking, Pekarek said.
“I think the saddest one I had one yearwas a little boy who said he just wantedtoothbrushes, because all five family mem-bers were using the same one,” said Pekarek,a learning coach at the school.

Centennial Road in Dade City, is funded byvoluntary contributions from school districtemployees.
“It’s to help needy families. Sometimesduring the holidays and sometimes othertimes when families have issues — theyneed food or clothing or something for chil-dren,” Pekarek explained.
“It’s not a government-funded program.It’s just teachers and staff members that do-nate money to it,” Pekarek said.

The idealized version of the holidays in-volves festive gatherings, enjoyable mealsand touching exchanges of special gifts.
In reality, though, many people are com-pletely stressed out by calendars that havetoo many events and activities to attend, toomuch food everywhere and too much pres-sure to choose the perfect gift.
And because of those expectations, self-imposed or otherwise, instead of being aspecial time, the holidays can become verystressful.
There are strategies, though, to help con-trol holiday stress by simplifying holidaytraditions, controlling overindulgence andlearning some emotional freedom tech-niques.
A trio of women recently gave a talk onthose topics at the Jimmie B Keel RegionalLibrary, 2902 W. Bearss Ave.
The talk was presented by SeniorInformation Resources, an organization thatis aimed at “Helping baby boomers and be-yond live well in our community.”
Barb M. Mahlmeister, a registered dieti-tian and nutritionist from Carrollwood,offered strategies for navigating through theholidays, without the weight gain that oftenaccompanies the season.
Brenda Cassato, executive director ofSenior Information Resources, offered prac-tical suggestions for reducing the stress thatoften comes with trying to find the perfectholiday presents.
And, Sandra Miniere, a personal lifecoach based in Wesley Chapel, demonstrat-ed emotional freedom techniques – whichinvolve tapping specific energy points inthe body to gain rapid relief from emotionaland physical disturbances.
Senior Information Resources is an or-ganization with about three dozenmembers, coming from Pasco, Pinellas andHillsborough counties.
Mahlmeister gave the audience numer-ous practical suggestions for enjoyingholiday foods, but reducing impacts that lastwell beyond the season.
Many people view the holidays as beingthe time between Thanksgiving and NewYear’s Day, Mahlmeister said. In reality,though, “the holidays start when kids getdressed up for Halloween.”
And, she said, they don’t end until thesecond week of January.
During that time, she said, people arebusier and tend to exercise less. At the sametime, they tend to indulge at all sorts ofgatherings.
So, she offered pointers to help reducethe impacts.
At buffets, she said, be sure to put what-ever you are going to eat on a plate. It’s fartoo easy to graze, and to consume signifi-cant calories.
“The toothpicks are not your friend,” shesaid. Many people eat much more than theyrealize, because they’re munching on foods
that are presented on toothpicks.No matter how busy the season is, it’s es-
sential to exercise, she added.Everyone can find a way to fit 15 to 20
minutes of exercise into their scheduleeach day, she said.
People should view exercise as a form ofbuilding up credits, which are then spenton the foods you eat. If you want ice creamlater, exercise more now, she said.
Besides giving you more freedom to in-dulge, it makes you more mindful, too, shesaid.
You tend to make more thoughtfulchoices about eating. Instead of automati-cally picking up a dessert, people will ask:“Do I really want to eat that or not?”
And, because they’re more aware of theimpacts, they’ll make choices on how to in-dulge. Do they want a calorie-ladencasserole dish or a slice of pie, she added.
It’s also important to carry food withyou, such as protein bars, nuts and seeds, toavoid getting too hungry, she said.
Before entering a gathering, eat a fat orprotein and drink lots of water, she advised.
Portion size is important, too,Mahlmeister said.
Cassato offered suggestions for simplify-ing gift giving during the holidays.
If you know someone living in an assistedcare facility, they might enjoy receiving ahair appointment and lunch, for instance.
Or, perhaps you could create a calendarwith family photos. Birthdays can be markedby photos, too, she said.
Audio books, fleece throws and boxes ofall occasion cards are other ideas, she said.
Of course, she added, “Everybody loves agift card.”
Other ideas include helping an older rela-tive to complete some technical chores,such as programming their cellphone or set-ting up social media accounts.
The key is to simplify and to focus on theessentials of spending time with others, andletting go of the stress, Cassato said.
“Our time is valuable. We have to guard itlike gold. But, the time you give away to oth-ers is like an investment,” Cassato said.
While Mahlmeister focused on stayinghealthy through the holidays, and Cassatotalked about simplifying gift giving, Minieretalked about a soothing self-care techniquethat involves the mind and body.
Emotional freedom techniques providerelief from emotional and physical distur-bance, by combining principles ofacupuncture and acupressure to balance en-ergy flow in the body.
Miniere offered a demonstration, describ-ing the energy points at various locations onthe body and tapping them, to change theenergy flow in the body.
The technique also involves breathing ex-ercises and the repetition of phrases, aspeople tap at various energy points.
Over time, people who use this tech-nique can learn how to change the flow ofenergy through mental tapping, Minieresaid.

Be Safe While Shopping• Lock your car doors and roll up your win-
dows.• Limit the amount of cash you
carry.• If possible, pay for
your purchases with acredit or debit card.
• Limit how muchjewelry you wear.
• Keep your purseclose to your body andyour wallet in an inside jack-et pocket if possible.
• Place all packages in your trunk, sopeople walking near your vehicle can’t seethem.
• Remember where you parked.• Have your keys out when you’re ap-
proaching your vehicle.• Don’t leave cellphones, purses or other
items in your parked car where they can beseen.
• When using ATM machines: use one in apopulated area and pay constant attention toyour surroundings. If possible, go during day-light hours. If anyone is lurking near themachine, pass it up and find another.Remember to retrieve your credit/debit cardafter the transaction.
Be Safe at Home• Be sure to lock your doors and windows

• Keep the cooking area free of greasebuildup.
• Do not place items near the stove thatcould catch fire, such as paper towels, cerealboxes and dishtowels.
• Turn off the stove and unplug small appli-ances, when leaving your home.
• Never smoke in bed.• Keep ashtrays away from upholstered fur-
niture and curtains.• Never leave burning cigarettes unattend-
ed.• Keep matches and lighters out of the
reach of children.• Use alternative heatersonly in well-ventilated
areas.• Do not use space
heaters in areas wherethey can be easily
knocked over.• Keep blankets,
clothing, furniture and any-thing that could catch fire away
from portable heaters.• Always use a protective screen near fire-
places.Be Safe While TravelingIf you’re hitting the road during the holi-
days, these tips from AAA might come inhandy.
• Be sure your car is roadworthy. Check theair in your tires. (The proper pressure level canbe found in the owner’s manual, or on a stickerthat’s usually located on the driver’s side door-jamb). Also, get your battery checked, have yourcar’s fluid levels checked and make sure youhave good windshield wipers.
• Buckle up. Be sure everyone is buckledup, and be sure that little ones are traveling inthe proper type of car seats.
• Know the route you’re taking, and makesure someone else knows it, too.
• Be sure that you’ve adjusted your seat andyour mirrors for maximum safety and comfortbefore you leave your driveway, or the rentalcar agency.
• Stay focused. Changing the radio, puttingon makeup or talking on the phone takes yourfocus off the road. If a phone call or text can’twait, have a passenger take the call or send thetext.
• Be alert to what other drivers are doing.Even good drivers can’t predict what otherdrivers will do.
• Don’t drink and drive. If you’re going tobe drinking, have a designated driver.
• If you get lost, don’t panic. Often, you cansimply take the next exit to turn around to getback on track.
• Pay attention to weather conditions andreports, and make any needed route adjust-ments.

So, in recent years, employees atCentennial Middle have helped by buyingspecific items.
This year, the school is providingChristmas gifts for 56 students.
Pekarek creates a spreadsheet of theitems she needs, and then makes small an-gels that indicate specific needs.
This year’s campaign kicked off with aholiday potluck breakfast on Nov. 20, wherestaff members picked up angels.
“Whatever they can afford, they pick up.They purchase the items. They have to havethem back in time for me to wrap the pres-ents,” Pekarek said.
The gifts will be distributed to studentson Dec. 16 and Dec. 17.
“Sometimes people can afford to buyonly two bags of candy, and that’s helpful.“Anything helps us.
“This year, we’re getting the kids hood-ies, because they usually don’t have warmjackets,” she said.
“The hoodies, I actually have the sizesand the colors that they want,” Pekarek said.
The students also receive socks, a stock-ing filled with candy and school supplies,and a bag of personal hygiene items includ-ing soaps, shampoos, conditioners anddeodorant.
At Christmas time, the committee alsoprovides extra food to help see themthrough the long holiday break, Pekareksaid.
The school also keeps a clothes closet tohelp children who need clothing. And, dur-ing the first cold snap of the season, it offersstudents a chance to pick up one of thecoats that have been donated to help chil-dren who don’t have one, she said.
Pekarek has been involved in the ABCcommittee’s efforts since she came to the

is gratified by his staff’s generosity.“I think it’s amazing. I think it goes to
show you that it’s not just about showingup and teaching them. It’s about caringabout them. It’s about wanting to take careof all their needs,” Saylor said.
“We know that if they don’t have someof these items that people are going to givethem for Christmas, then it’s definitely goingto affect how the kids are doing in the class-room.
“I think it goes to show the caring natureof the staff that I have. They truly, truly careabout the kids. And, that’s so important.Once you care about them, then you can re-ally, really teach them and really, really makean impact.
“Once they know you care, then there’sthat rapport piece,” Saylor said.
The principal also appreciates Pekarek’sefforts.
“Ever since I’ve been here, she’s takenthis on and spearheaded these efforts. It’s alot of time and energy outside of work. Wejust appreciate what she does.”
Pekarek enjoys being involved.“I love this school. We have really good
kids and really appreciative families,”Pekarek said. “Some families cry when theypick up their presents.”

For example, surgical training can bedone remotely with 3-D imaging. Biologystudents can examine live specimens undera microscope that is set up thousands ofmiles away. Pollen counts specific to a singleneighborhood can be available to asthmapatients who need to plan their day.
Residents got a peak at the special dis-trict at a presentation in September.
Pasco County commissioners got anoverview of the district and its potential asan economic driver for the county at a Dec.8 workshop. A second workshop on Jan. 19will focus on financial plans for the district.
Metro Development Group and HeidtDesign are partnering with the county onthis one-of-a-kind visioning plan. State legis-lators approved the special district as a10-year-pilot program, but the plan in totalwill evolve over 50 years.
The pilot portion of development willbypass the usual state reviews, with ap-provals made locally by countycommissioners.
“The buck stops with you,” said PatGassaway, president of Heidt Design.
UltraFi currently can be found in threeresidential neighborhoods built by MetroDevelopment Group including Union Park
in Wesley Chapel. Two others - Park Creekand Waterleaf - are in Hillsborough County.
But, Pasco will be the first community inthe nation with technology central to siteplans from the start, not simply an add-onamenity.
The company currently is developingPark Place, a master-planned community inWesley Chapel on the former EppersonRanch property. A 7-acre man-made swim-ming pool, known as a crystal lagoon, willbe the centerpiece.
Metro Development Group plans amixed-used development with a business in-cubator, offices and residential.
Mirada is another of the company’s proj-ects on the former Cannon Ranch.
Pasco is uniquely positioned to foster theconnected-city corridor concept, accordingto William Wallace, executive director of USIgnite, a nonprofit under the umbrella of theNational Science Foundation and the WhiteHouse Office of Science and TechnologyPolicy.
He announced at the workshop thatPasco’s application to join the national TechHire Initiative had been approved, andwould open up opportunities for the coun-ty to apply for $100 million in federal grants.
Pasco is one of about 40 national partici-pants, and the only county in the group.
The Tech Hire program encourages non-traditional opportunities, such as technologyboot camps, that offer faster training andnew, higher paying jobs for people in thetechnology industry.
“It takes a leap of faith,” Wallace said. “Itseems like you have taken that leap of faith.”
Gassaway went so far as to suggest thatPasco’s reputation as a bedroom communitythat supplies workers to other countiescould change over time.
“Pasco might be the destination for peo-ple to come to work,” he said. “That’samazing.”

Carin Hetzler-Nettles, principal at WesleyChapel High, characterized Jaret as “an in-credible young man who loved school,loved his friends and family, and loved par-ticipating in sports here at Wesley ChapelHigh.”
She also noted: “ He touched many liveswith his random acts of kindness and self-lessness, and was adored by his Wildcatfamily. He will be missed greatly and will al-ways be in our hearts.”

Five new members were added to theLand O’ Lakes High School Hall of Fame,during the third annual Land O’ LakesGators Athletics Foundation Hall of FameInduction Dinner held this fall.
Proceeds from the event benefit athleticprograms at Land O’ Lakes High School.
Here are the new inductees:Charlie McBrideCharlie McBride was the school’s
wrestling coach from 1979 to 1999.His coaching record includes 196 wins,
13 district championships and five playoffvictories. He was the de facto head coach ofvarious sports. He also was the athletic di-
rector for 20 years, and was the SunshineAthletic Conference and Pasco athletic di-rector of the year for 2002-2003.
David SingletonDavid Singleton was a member of the
class of 1979. He played football, basketball,golf, and track and field.
He was part of the first district footballchampionship team. He was a member of theschool’s national honor society. He graduatedfrom Florida State University’s College of Lawwith high honors and was elected to the BestLawyers in America Guide, 2013 to 2015.
He was recognized with a lifetimeachievement award.
Kenny GormanKenny Gorman, a member of the class of
1982, was a two-time state wrestling cham-pion in 1981-1982. He also held the schoolwrestling record for more than 15 years,with 82 career wins. He was the first areawrestler to win a state wrestling champi-onship. He was on the wrestling andfootball teams.
Kevin DowlingKevin Dowling, a member of the class of
1985, was voted to the Tampa Tribune All-Decade Team. He also was named the TampaTribune Male Athlete of the Year in 1985. Hewas first team, all-conference offensive lineand defensive line. He was an honorablemention on the all-state team. He was a two-time state qualifier in wrestling and track.He set the shot put school record of 52 feet

Academy at the Lakes tops all 2A private schoolsBy Michael [email protected]
When Tom Haslam took the athletic di-rector position at Academy at the Lakesaround seven years ago, the school had var-sity teams. But, a lot of their games wereagainst junior varsity opponents.
With a high school enrollment of slightlymore than 100, the talent pool was limited.In some sports, around half of the school’sschedule would be games against a rivalschool’s lesser squad.
“We were just trying to start somewhere,and get competitive games,” Haslam recalled.
They started small, but they didn’t staythere.
Academy at the Lakes is now seen as apremier athletic program in class 2A compe-tition, and it was recognized as such bywinning the Carey E. McDonald Award,given to the state’s top 2A private schoolathletic program.
The award, presented by the FloridaAthletic Coaches Association, recognizes theschool’s accomplishments during the 2014-15 school year.
To turn things around, Haslam initially fo-cused on a couple of key areas.
He wanted to upgrade the coachingstaff, and was able to hire men and womenwith a strong track record at other schools.The change produced results for someteams rather quickly.
The second change seems a bit unortho-dox. He upgraded the Wildcats’ uniforms.
“It may sound like a minute thing, but it’snot. Kids have to feel good about them-selves, and they have to feel important.And, I thought that was one thing that wasan easy fix that we could do right away andmake an improvement,” Haslam said. “Itdoesn’t sound like much, but if you’re a 16-or 17-year-old kid, it’s important.”
Haslam switched the school over to Nikeuniforms, giving them a sharper look.
That change yielded results, too.The student athletes more-closely resem-
bled their opponents, giving them a boost inconfidence, and giving the program a moresuccessful image that they soon would du-plicate on the field and on the court.
To be recognized as a top 2A school, aschool must be successful across a varietyof sports.
While some schools have a good team or
two, Academy at the Lakes has found suc-cess in several sports.
During the 2014-15 school year, eight ofthe school’s individuals or teams reachedthe regional or state level of competition.
The success isn’t limited to this year, ei-ther.
The girls’ basketball team has reachedthe final four in each of the past four sea-
sons. The girls’ softball team has won fourstraight district championships, and alsoreached a final four. A swimmer at theschool won a state championship, a boys’doubles tennis team won a district title anda girls’ doubles tennis team won a statechampionship.
With that much success, all of the acade-my coaches want to continue their winning
ways in their respective sport.And that includes Haslam, who coaches
boys’ basketball, in addition to being theschool’s athletic director.
“You don’t want to be the coach thathasn’t got your program going yet,” Haslamsaid. “I feel some pressure, you bet. I likethat. I think that’s the way it should be.”
Haslam’s team certainly is contributingto the school’s overall athletic success.
The boys’ basketball team has reached theregional finals three of the past four years,and made it to the final four last season.
Now that the academy is an elite program,staying that way presents its own challenges.Haslam is hiring new coaches to improve thesports that are lagging, and he also must re-tain the talented coaches on his staff.
With a track record of success, games insome sports frequently reaching capacity at-tendance and a high school student bodythat’s grown beyond 160, Haslam’s goal is tokeep moving forward and continue improv-ing.
That includes the uniforms.No longer content with just one brand of
apparel, their current agreement allowsteams to choose between Nike, Adidas andUnder Armour.
The school’s schedule also includesstiffer competition than teams have faced inthe past. As the program has grown instrength, its opponents have become chal-lenging, sometimes including schools suchas Mitchell and Land O’ Lakes high schools.
In addition to winning the Carey E.McDonald Award, Academy at the Lakes alsoplaced third overall for the FHSAA Floyd E.Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Award, whichincludes more than 100 eligible 2A publicand private schools.
Haslam finds the recognition gratifying,since he has a hand in all of the sports atthe academy.
But, the athletic director credits the menand women he’s hired to lead theWildcats with shaping the school into aperennial athletic success.
“To me, it’s all about the coaches. We’vegot some great people leading our kids, andI’m smart enough that once I get a goodcoach, I stay out of their way,” Haslamsaid. “I’ll take a little bit of credit for gettingthem there. But once they’re there, they’rethe ones winning these games and moldingthese kids.”

If you want to have yourself a merry‘little’ Christmas, you may want tobypass Bill and Debbie Tuttle’splace.
They’re not into merry ‘little’ Christmases— they prefer presenting a mega-dose ofholiday cheer. And, they deliver it throughthousands of artfully arranged decorations.
Beyond the mere size and variety of thedécor, there are stories behind scores ofitems in their display.
And, in a true spirit of Christmas, thecouple will open their home to the publicon Dec. 18, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., so peoplecan take a peek. The couple’s home is at2308 Camp Indianhead Road in Land O’Lakes.
When visitors arrive, they’ll see a lighteddisplay in the front yard, and decorationsadorning the house.
But, that’s just a prelude to what liesahead inside.
Every room in the house is dressed upfor the season.
Near the front door, a giant figure ofSanta, welcomes those who enter.
There are trees, with various themes, indifferent rooms of the house.
In the office and crafts room, for in-stance, there’s a tree with ornaments madefrom old wooden spools and decorationsdepicting various crafts.
There’s a Mickey tree and a Minnie treethat Debbie Tuttle made, to complement theanimated Disney characters adorning a shelfin the couple’s living room.
There’s also a massive tree illuminated by5,000 lights and decked out with ornamentsdepicting moments of the family’s lifethrough the years.
The couple’s zeal for Christmas is on dis-play everywhere.
The sunken tub in the master bath, forinstance, is off limits for the holidays be-cause decorations encircle the tub.
Even the dog crate, in the couple’s mas-ter bedroom, is decked out for the season.
There’s a holiday bedspread that Debbiemade, on the couple’s bed.
There’s homage to her late father, too,featuring a miniature John Deere tractor, asmall tree decorated with tiny John Deerehats, and a small figure of a fisherman — de-picting the things that he loved best.
The dining room features an 11-footbottle tree that Debbie made this year,using bottles she bought at Dollar Treestores. “I went to 13 stores in one day,” shesaid, adding it took 201 bottles to makethe tree, and she even picked up some of

A 6-foot-tall nutcracker stands as a sentry,providing an imposing holiday presence.
There are plenty of snowmen and nativi-ty scenes, Santa clauses, decorated trees and
twinkling lights to see inother rooms throughout thehouse, and in the gatheringspaces outdoors.
Holiday music also helpsto boost the home’s holidaycheer quotient.
The couple has beenopening their home for fouryears, offering some privatetours and a couple of publicopen houses every holidayseason.
More than 400 peopleturned out for the first openhouse, the couple said.
Besides giving people afeast for the eyes, they alsoprovide cookies and cider, forthose who visit their home.
There is no charge to takethe tour, but donations areaccepted.
The couple uses themoney to provide Christmasfor some families in need. This year, theythink they’ve received enough donations toprovide a Christmas dinner and presents forfour families.
Getting ready for the holidays at theTuttles begins on Oct. 1 and takes consider-able work, but the couple enjoys sharingtheir holiday handiwork.
They also enjoy sharing their enthusiasm
with their granddaughter, 9-year-old KaliseMabingnay, who lives with them and helpsprovide seasonal cheer.
Making holidays bright is what it’s allabout, said Bill Tuttle, who works for SeniorHelpers.
“If you can’t be in the spirit after leavinghere, then you’re not ever going to be in thespirit,” Bill Tuttle said.

The Pasco Economic DevelopmentCouncil will host its second annualSMARTstart Challenge business pitchcompetition on Feb. 25 in partnershipwith Saint Leo University’s student business plan competition. Local entre-preneurs will compete for a combined$10,000 in prize money.
The first-place winner will receive asix-month, on-site membership in aSMARTstart Pasco Business Incubator.There are two incubators, one in DadeCity and one in New Port Richey.
More than 20 start-up businesses com-peted in the inaugural event in 2015.
Applications will be evaluated onmeasures relating to important elementsabout the economics of the business andthe ability of the applicant to be success-ful. Other considerations include market
potential and research, the uniqueness ofthe business idea, evaluation of potentialpartners, financial plan and attractivenessof the business idea.
The application deadline is Jan. 8. Oralpresentations of five minutes with a ques-tion and answer period from a panel ofjudges will be on Feb. 10. Five or six final-ists will be selected for the finalcompetition on Feb. 25.
The finals will be open to the public,with the first-place winner and runners-up announced at a reception followingthe presentations.
