Blackwell Publishing, Oxford, 2004. 560 pp. £125.00. ISBN 063204795X. The publication of Volume II of The Lakes Handbook completes this ‘turn of the century’ synthesis and review of both theoretical and applied limnology. Whereas Volume I is largely theoretical and focuses on the biological, chemical and physical properties of standing water ecosystems, Volume II addresses management and restoration and is supported by in-depth case studies. The Lakes Handbook is a natural successor to The Rivers Handbook, published by Blackwell in 1992, and follows a similar two-volume format with chapters contributed by key researchers in each field. The book is divided into five parts which together address the various facets of modern lake management such as philosophy, practical approaches (supported extensively by case studies), and legal frameworks driving lake protection and rehabilitation. Part one includes a thought-provoking contribution from Patrick O’Sullivan on the value of lakes in which ‘naturalness’, as informed by palaeolimnology, is presented as a motivation for, and measure of, lake management and protection. This reference-based approach to lake management is now enshrined within the EC Water Framework Directive and some link to these legislative processes would have been interesting. Much of the volume comprises detailed exami- nations of lake management issues and approaches, either by region or by lake type. The regional chapters deal with lakes in North America, Europe, Asia and arid regions, whilst the type-specific section covers shallow temperate lakes, shallow tropical lakes and reservoirs. These chapters focus on the limnology, history and management of a range of well-known lakes. Lakes Washington and Baikal and the Aral Sea are addressed in depth and there are two chapters dealing with European alpine lakes and northern European lakes. The well-documented history of degradation of the Aral Sea is covered twice, by W.D. Williams’ chapter on arid lakes and also as a great lake of Asia by L.G. Butorina. Part three includes a short but comprehensive overview by Geoff Phillips of eutrophication of shallow eutrophic lakes in temperate regions and a companion chapter on eutrophication in shallow tropical lakes by Patrick Osborne. Some overlap in material is inevitable in such closely related chapters and in edited volumes and there are other instances in the book where similar topics are repeated. However, the nature of The Lakes Handbook is such that many readers will consult individual chapters in isolation and all of the chapters are comprehensive enough to stand alone. Two chapters worthy of note were completed by the editors and second authors following the deaths of W.T. Edmondson and M. Strasˇkraba who provided chapters on Lake Washington and the limnology of reservoirs, respectively. The latter will be a useful summary for those trying to understand how to apply traditional limnological understanding to artificial and highly managed systems. Part four is likely to be of most interest to those engaged in lake management or applied research. This includes a critical review of the export-coefficient model for predicting nutrient loadings, a model widely applied in the UK in recent years. Walter Rast and Jeffrey Thornton contribute an excellent overview of the hugely influential OECD Eutrophication Programme led by Vollenweider in the early 1980s. The OECD model has been used in many situations and continues to be an invaluable lake management tool when used with caution. Sven-Erik Jrgensen’s chapter ambitiously deals with the full breadth of mechanisms and processes in lakes that have been subject to modelling, covering eutrophication, oxygen, ecotoxicology, acidification, stratification, fish predation and biomanipulation. Also included in this part are chapters on practical restoration of enriched lakes and acidified lakes and a detailed examination of biomanipulation as a management tool. The chapters in the final part of the book deal with a variety of legal frameworks in different countries. This part of the book is likely to become outdated rapidly and can only give an introduction to the complex interplay of legal and economic frameworks that control the status and future of the world’s lakes. The two volumes of The Lakes Handbook successfully provide an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of all aspects of pure and applied limnology and will be a valuable source of information, both for undergraduate and postgraduate students and those involved in lake management.
