The Lakes International Comic Art Festival’s New Mascot Family!
Poblin and the Lakes Gang will help to bring their own distinct identity to the festival in the same great tradition as European festivals or great comic art producing cultures such as Japan.
Who better to create the characters than one of the UK’s leading character designers, Jonathan Edwards? He has a fi ne track record in comics and a whole multitude of creative strings to his bow. Some of the Lakes Gang have been transformed into 4ft high felt creatures thanks to Louise Evans aka Felt Mistress. If you take a stroll or follow the Windows on Comic Art Trail, you’ll fi nd them knee-deep in comics at Beales’ Department Store, Finkle Street... you can follow their trail in the Family Zone (see page 18) or fi nd out more in our exclusive comic created by Jonathan (see page 44).
Jonathan and Louise tell you more about their work in a special event on Saturday 18 October (see page 8) and Felt Mistress will be giving one of her acclaimed workshops at the Brewery Arts Centre on Sunday 19 October.

Bare Bones Jeff Smith
A Hundred Years of Fun: Lew Stringer
To End all Wars : The Art of Editing
Here come the Frogs Lupano and Moreau
Meet Jeff Smith on a rare visit to the UK. Jeff is the New York Times’ bestselling creator of the Bone graphic novels, which have won numerous awards including 10 Eisners and 11 Harveys. Time magazine described it as “an epic fantasy and the best all-ages graphic novel published.” In 2009 Jeff was the subject of an Emmy award-winning documentary called The
Cartoonist: Jeff Smith, Bone, and the Changing Face
of Comics. Chris Thompson of Orbital
Comics takes you on a captivating journey into Jeff’s
multi-dimensional world.
The legendary Lew Stringer brings us his Blimey! blog with an hour- long romp through the history of British humour comics. Lew will take you from Ally Sloper to Toxic, with selected images from the comics your ancestors read and their infl uence on today’s comics.
Lew Stringer has worked in British comics for over 30 years, including the Beano, Buster, Oink!, Spider-man, Viz, Sonic the Comic, Toxic and Tellytots. Amongst his creations are Combat Colin, Brickman, Derek the Troll, Tom Thug, Pete and his Pimple and Suburban Satanists. Who better to offer you 100 years of fun in 60 minutes?
A panel of contributors to 2014’s World War One anthology To End All Wars will discuss the ways and means, dynamics and pitfalls of editing contributions from 52 artists and writers in 13 countries. How the editing process can make and break a work of comic art is led by co-editors Jonathan Clode and John Stuart Clark (aka Brick)
With typical arrogance and considerable aplomb, these two brilliant young French creators take the legend of The Hartlepool Monkey and create a highly original, humorous and brilliantly crafted satire. Based on a true story where a monkey is hanged suspected of being a French spy, this book was winner of the prestigious literary prize, the Rendez Vous de L’histoire. Meet them both and listen and watch as they tell you “pour quoi” and more under the expert interpretation of acclaimed, fast-fi ction writer David Gaffney.

Hello Kitty, Hello Poblin: Making Memorable Characters
The New Funnies:Stephen Collins, Lizz Lunney and Donya Todd
Artists design personalities with some of the most successful characters taking on a life of their own beyond the page: take, for example, Hello Kitty, The Pink Panther or those Meerkats. Simples!
This year we introduce some characters of our own, designed by master-illustrator Jonathan Edwards, to refl ect all the different aspects of the festival. Jonathan and his partner Louise, aka Felt Mistress, are trailblazers in creating unique multi-dimensional characters. Their work has been exhibited all over the world and used in ad campaigns, music videos and fi lms.
Jonathan and Louise will be in conversation with Woodrow Phoenix, delving into the mysteries behind making memorable characters. Woodrow has written extensively about characters, mascots and the designer toy phenomenon in various publications including his book Plastic Culture.
Stephen Collins’ “weekly dose of stupid stuff” appears in The Guardian Weekend magazine. Some Comics, the best strips (so far) from this best new cartoonist (maybe) will be published in autumn 2014.
Lizz Lunney draws surrealist animals, household objects and items of food, all endowed with the sometimes-questionable gift of consciousness. Her second publication Take Away! was especially-commissioned book for Blank Slate and she recently co-edited The Hic & Hoc Illustrated Journal of Humour Volume Two.
Donya lives on a remote farm in Cornwall, England and had her graphic novel Death & the Girls published by Blank Slate in 2013. She also publishes comics anthology Bimba and one half of Chubby a new t-shirt venture with partner-in-crime Jack Teagle.
Join comic artist Nicola Streeten and learn the identity of Kim Jong-Un’s life coach, meet Depressed Cat and Leaning Rabbit and fi nd out why Death and Pizza are the perfect combination.

The Man Who has Everything: Dave Gibbons
Moebius and more: 40 years of The Humanoids
A Maestro Draws: Joost Swarte
Woody Guthrie and the Dust Bowl Ballads: Nick Hayes
Join Resonance FM’s Alex Fitch to celebrate Dave Gibbons’ life in comics.
Dave established himself in underground comics and fanzines in Britain before becoming a frequent contributor to the seminal 2000AD. Since then Dave has drawn and written for most comics’ publishers. His work has encompassed Dr Who, Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Captain America, Dr Strange, The Hulk, Predator and Aliens.
With writer Frank Miller Dave co-created Give Me Liberty and Martha Washington Goes to
The festival is honoured to welcome Dutch graphic designer and artist Joost Swarte who is a giant of European cartooning. He is best-known for his Ligne Claire, or clear line style of drawing, and in fact coined the term. He is sometimes referred to as the “heir” of Tintin. Come along and fi nd out why.
Comic artist Hannah Berry will reveal more about Nick (winner of two Guardian Media Awards), his work and his portrayal of one of the most enduring singer-songwriters to ever live - Woody Guthrie. Guthrie’s legend and infl uence lives on - a touchstone for the likes of Bob Dylan, and The Clash. With a delighted eye and ear for a tune Nick Hayes’ follow up to the critically-acclaimed Rime of the Modern Mariner brings the legend to life.
War. Watchmen, his collaboration with writer Alan Moore, is the best-selling graphic novel ever published and became a major motion picture. His autobiographical graphic novel The Originals won an Eisner Award in 2005.
Dave’s most recent comics work is a collaboration with writer Mark Millar, The Secret Service. He is a consultant on motion books for the Madefi re platform, featuring his creation Treatment, and other ground-breaking storytelling technologies.
Inspired by the revolutionary fervour in Paris post-1968, three French creators, Moebius (Jean Giraud), Philippe Druillet, and Jean-Pierre Dionnet formed Les Humanoïdes Associés in December 1974. They launched Métal Hurlant which was to change the face of comics publishing forever. 40 years later, Humanoids is an international company with offi ces in Paris, Los Angeles, London, and Tokyo.
Join Humanoids’ UK Liaison, Tim Pilcher , on an exploration of the “Jodorverse” as he presents a celebration of one of the most innovative and important graphic novel publishers in the world.

Bringing together the world’s best cartoonists to talk about the art form they love. Set to a gorgeous original score by Stefan Lessard of Dave Matthews Band, Stripped explores comic strips in depth, why they’re so loved, and how they’re navigating this dicey period between print and pixels.
The best-selling Time Traveller’s Wife, was also a fi lm but, Audrey’s prowess lies in her drawings, prints, photographs and paintings. She writes, illustrates and binds herself including her most recent book Raven Girl. She is now collaborating on comics with Eddie Campbell whilst working on a sequel to The Time Traveller’s Wife.

The Great War in Comics Charlie Adlard, John Freeman, Robbie Morrison and Ivan Petrus
Doing Her Own Thing: Becky Cloonan
Living in a Comic Eddie Campbell
Drawing on Japan: Glyn Dillon and Fumio Obata
Marking the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, Abbot Hall Art Gallery and the Lakes International Comic Art Festival have brought together, for the fi rst time, the work of three internationally-acclaimed artists who have shed new light on this confl ict through the medium of comic art – Charlie Adlard, Joe Colquhoun and Ivan Petrus. The White Death, Charlie’s War and The Ghost of Passchendaele put ordinary people’s stories in the spotlight using the unique verbal and visual range that comic art can offer. Join Tim Pilcher (co-founder of The Publishing House Les Cartoonistes Dangereux which was the original publisher of White Death) to assess how comic art has provided an alternative perspective on the reality of war and to discover why these artists have chosen to tackle this subject at all.
Born in Pisa, Italy, Becky Cloonan began her career self-publishing mini-comics in 1999. Since then she has gone on to work with publishers like DC, Vertigo, Dark Horse, Harper Collins and Marvel, winning an Eisner Award in 2013 for her comic The Mire. Most recently she illustrated The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys as well as contributing art to series like Young Avengers, Batman Black and White, and American Vampire. Her mantra is “comics rule everything around me” and her warning is “self-publish or perish”. Join John McShane to reveal how Becky Cloonan manages to do her own thing.
Eddie Campbell has been working in comics for more than thirty years. His works include the huge From Hell in collaboration with Alan Moore, Bacchus, the further adventures of the 4,000 year old God of Wine, and Alec, an autobiographical comic he has been drawing since 1981. Recent books have included The Fate of the Artist, The Lovely Horrible Stuff and The From Hell Companion, a book crammed full of theory, anecdote and outtakes. Most recently he has been working with Neil Gaiman on The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountain, a performance/reading now turned into a book. Eddie offers a rare peak into what it’s like to live in a comic.
Glyn Dillon continues to make a major impact on the international comic arts scene with his graphic novel The Nao of Brown. Meanwhile Fumio Obata’s debut graphic novel Just So Happens has wowed critics and readers since its publication in February 2014. This is a unique live draw bringing together two acclaimed illustrators and artists who draw on Japanese culture for their stories and inspiration, producing delicate, powerful and hauntingly beautiful art.

Woodrow and the Giant Book She Lives is an audacious comic art experiment that has never been attempted before.
Woodrow Phoenix has crafted She Lives, a silent comic story set in California in the late 1940s, to be a surprising and absorbing visual and storytelling experience. In order to make a book as giant as possible he had to bind it himself. He then took the unprecedented step of actually drawing the story into the bound book itself. You see it exactly as it was made, with all the corrections and marks visible. She Lives is story, an art object and a conceptual challenge all in one giant one metre square package. Join Woodrow to fi nd out how this giant book was made. She Lives will be on display throughout the festival.

Love and Comics
The MaestroJoost Swarte
Divas and FatalesRian Hughes and Sean PhillipsMeet Nick Abadzis and find out why he is one
of the most respected and loved UK comic artists. His novel Laika about the first dog in space won many awards including the prestigious Eisner in 2008. Hugo Tate has been described as “Britain’s Love and Rockets”; meanwhile his comics and illustrations have appeared in publications as diverse as Doctor Who Magazine, Punch, The Times and David Fickling Comics.
Joelle Bernard is a French librarian who fell in love with comics when she was just 5 years old and is recognised as a comics’ aficionado. In 2003 she met Nick Abadzis at the Angouleme Festival in France and has been a fan and a friend ever since. Joelle will share her enthusiasm and knowledge of Nick’s work and introduce his latest book (co-authored with David Camus), The Cigar that Fell in Love With a Pipe, a tragic-comic tale of love, heartbreak and tobacco starring Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth.
Joost Swarte is a maestro, a pioneer and a true promoter of comics. From publishing his comics in the first issue of the seminal Raw magazine (by Art Spiegelman and Francoise Mouly) in 1979, he’s never stood still moving from drawing comics to illustration and graphic art, designing posters, stamps, logos and typefaces, furniture, objects and even buildings. He is the co-founder of the publishing house Oog&Blik, worked on scenarios for the Herge Museum in Belgium and is a regular contributor to The New Yorker. Is That All There Is? his collective comics, was published in 2012 by Fantagraphics. With the expert guidance of Orbital Comics’ Chris Thompson we are pleased to uncover the genius that is Joost Swarte.
Internationally-acclaimed comic artist Sean Phillips has created Josephine, “the ultimate femme fatale”, as part of his collaboration with Ed Brubaker Fatale. Rian Hughes’ most recent artistic journey was into Soho dives to draw Soho divas Soho Dives, Soho Divas 2013. In a special burlesque-inspired event, Sean and Rian draw a live model, ably handled by Orbital Comics Chris Thompson, and demonstrate the art of creating a fully-formed character before your eyes. You may even be seduced into participating…

“It can take other authors whole books to say what Darryl can say in a single illustration” Jon Ronson.
Darryl Cunningham explodes myths and tells tales. He is the acclaimed author of Psychiatric Tales and Science Tales and has a huge following for his blog Darryl Cunningham investigates. We are delighted to be launching Darryl’s new book Supercrash: How to Hijack the Global Economy which takes us to the heart of free world politics and the financial crisis through a fascinating portrait of the charismatic novelist Ayn Rand. This launch gives us the perfect excuse to celebrate Darryl’s life in comics with Nicola Streeten in the role of Eamonn Clarke This is your Life!.
Joff Winterhart will be documenting a “Day In The Life of LICAF” on Saturday 18 October in words and (mostly) pictures. What do comic professionals eat? Why and how do people queue? What is the posture of the average comic fan? Like a not particularly accurate courtroom artist, or perhaps a quite slow polaroid camera, he will, nevertheless, present his fi ndings in some form and, only a day later in some sort of analogue power point presentation.. Ably assisted by ace comics creator Hannah Berry.
Joff Winterhart is an illustrator, fi lm-maker and author of Days of the Bagnold Summer which was shortlisted for the 2012 Costa Award for Best Novel.
From web comics to the “infi nite canvas”, how can comic art best utilise the digital medium both to increase and widen its audience and innovate the form itself? Who better to take you on that journey than digital pioneers Scott McCloud and Daniel Goodbrey? Hosted by Russell Willis, publisher of Sequential, which is at the vanguard of digital comics.
Described as “a dazzling and tireless exponent of the comic art form” Bryan Talbot has been one of the driving forces in the comics industry since the late 70s when he created the Brainstorm Comix series for Alchemy Press. Since then he has produced work in almost every genre and pushed boundaries in many ways ranging from sci-fi Victoriana The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, credited as being the fi rst graphic novel in the UK, to a moving tale about surviving child abuse The Tale of One Bad Rat to Alice in Sunderland, covering the history and culture of Sunderland. Most recently his highly-acclaimed steampunk detective series Grandville, which follows the life of Detective Inspector Lebrock, employs anthropomorphism and satire to startling effect. Bryan will be talking about his career in comics with comic art guru Dr Mel Gibson.

Oliver East The Homesick Truant’s Cumbrian Yarn
During the harsh winter of 2014 Oliver East began his most ambitious project to date. East walked over 140 miles in 10 stages from Arnside train station to Carlisle train station keeping as close as possible to the 30 or so stations that form the Cumbrian Coastal Train Line. Intently observing his surroundings but without taking photos or making detailed sketches, East focused on the humdrum incidentals of the landscape and human activity. Later he drew and made comics, one for each stage of the journey. The end results, in dramatic monochrome, present not documentary images but revelatory soundscapes.
View 10 giant murals based on the 10 comic books at The Factory.
Oliver East, one of a new wave of comic creators who take both art and comics in uncharted directions, is the worthy recipient of the fi rst Lakes International Comic Art Festival artist commission in association with The Brewery Arts Centre and the Factory, Kendal.

Marking the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, Abbot Hall Art Gallery and the Lakes International Comic Art Festival bring together for the fi rst time the work of three internationally- acclaimed artists who have shed new light on this confl ict through the medium of comic art.
Charley’s War has been described as ‘the greatest comic strip ever created’ and from 1979 until 1987 formed a unique collaboration between pioneering writer Pat Mills and acclaimed war artist Joe Colquhoun.
The comic strip rarely fl inched from providing a frank portrayal of the horrors of war, with Colquhoun willing to subvert traditional techniques of comics’ illustration by opting for heavy inks, messy backgrounds and stark facial expressions to depict an exceptionally dark atmosphere.
Set in the Alpine trench war of 1914-1918, White Death is a powerful story of confl ict at a simultaneously personal and national level. Charlie Adlard is best-known as the artist on the record-breaking series The Walking Dead. Yet this early collaboration with writer Robbie Morrison is arguably one of his fi nest works. Using just charcoal and chalk on gray paper, his drawings convey the fear, horror and desolation of war. Ghosts of Passchendaele, launched in 2014, is the third book of a graphic novel trilogy by Ivan Petrus. Painted in bold, dark, muddy colours, his art powerfully invokes the iconic post-war Passchendaele landscape.
Curated by Beth Hughes (Abbot Hall Gallery) & Sharon Tait (LICAF) with thanks to Jane Colquhoun, Moose Harris and John Freeman. Additional thanks to The Flemish Literature Fund and to Titan Books and Delcourt.
Join us at Abbot Hall, the Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry and Blackwell for an irresistible journey through the twists and turns of Grizedale Arts’ last 15 years, taking in artists Andy Goldsworthy, Marcus Coates, Olaf Breuning, Turner Prize winners Jeremy Deller and Laure Prouvost, and many, many more along the way.
This expansive show presents a challenging view of the rural landscape and the conventional ‘romantic’ perceptions of it, featuring reconstructions, artist fi lms, complex installations, original artworks, performance and a wealth of other material that will provoke, confuse, enlighten and entertain.
Across the courtyard, at the Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry, Laure Prouvost’s recent Turner Prize winning fi lm installation, Wantee, celebrates her fi ctional grandfather’s association with artist Kurt Schwitters. A short drive away, at Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House, Grizedale Arts have created After Ford 151 – Blackwell’s Dark Place, a collision of objects and ideas that presents a politicised history of design, and explores the notion of Arts and Crafts as a resistance movement.

The Nuisance of Landscape:Grizedale - The Sequel
Doug Braithwaite began his professional comics career at the age of 17 working for Marvel UK and 200AD breaking into the American market just two years later. This specially-commissioned exhibition will not only celebrate Doug’s unique contribution to the superhero genre (where he has drawn just about every character both for Marvel and DC comics in titles including: Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe, Batman LODK, Green Arrow, Universe-X, Justice, Secret Invasion Thor, Wolverine Origins, and Journey Into Mystery to name but a few) but will also reveal why the other universes he has helped create (Storm Dogs with David Hine (published by Image) and Unity for Valiant Comics) have won him award nominations and great acclaim from critics, peers and fans alike. The Universe Within will explore Doug’s working process, as well as showing the fi nished artwork, and will underline why he is considered to be a truly “fi ne” artist both within and beyond the comic art world.

The Magnifi cent Knockabout White Elephant EmporiumElephant Emporium @ Elephant Yard, Kendal, UK - For one weekend only
FREESubject to capacity
Suitable for anyone with a keen curiosity and sense of humour, this unique emporium offers a miscellaneous and multifarious bazaar of the bizarre and a marvellous mart of the most memorable kind:
Viz Unmasked: How a Viz Comic is MadeFor the last 35 years, Viz has been produced quietly, and on a more or less monthly basis from the comic’s headquarters in the North East of England. In all that time, like Colonel Sanders’ blend of herbs and spices, its method of production has been a closely guarded secret. But all that is about to change.
All will be revealed in this fully interactive, state-of-the-art, hands-on animatronic exhibition. How is Britain’s third or fourth funniest comic produced, from conception to fi nal product? Anyone wishing to visit is advised to arrive early as queueing times, to see what is already being billed as ‘The Exhibition of the Century’, are expected to exceed 5 hours..... or possibly 6.
Get Surreal with Herr Seele (or Dadada is all he wants to say to you!)
All the way from Belgium, making his UK debut, comes Herr Seele co-creator of Belgian iconic half-wit Cowboy Henk for
which he and writer Kamagurka won one of the major prizes at the Angouleme Festival in France in 2014. Herr Seele presents the history of their nation, 35 paintings in a style developed by René Magritte, their great predecessor and compatriot. Called La Peinture
Vache (painting with the tail of a cow as a brush) it’s painting done quickly, with what baroque artists used to call ‘el furio del pinello’ (the fury of the brush)... it’s fast, it’s furious and it’s absurd ......
She Lives - an audacious comic art experiment that has never been
attempted before. Woodrow Phoenix has crafted She Lives, a silent comic story set in
California in the late 1940s. In order to make a book as giant as possible he had to bind it himself using the largest paper size available. He took the unprecedented step of actually drawing the story into the bound book itself, so on display is original art work, with all the corrections and marks visible.

Joff is an illustrator, fi lm-maker and creator of Days of the Bagnold Summer which was shortlisted for the 2012 Costa Award for Best Novel. He has an extraordinary talent for observing the day-to-day lives of people and places and sharing them in words and pictures with great insight and humour.
On Saturday 18 October Joff will be be documenting a “Day In The Life of LICAF” in words and (mostly) pictures picking up its sights, sounds and atmosphere. What do comic professionals eat? Why and how do people queue? What is the posture of the average comic fan? Like a not particularly accurate courtroom artist, or perhaps a quite slow polaroid camera, he will nevertheless present his fi ndings and research in some form and, only a day later in some sort of analogue power point presentation (see page 15)…Ably assisted by ace comics creator Hannah Berry.
Thanks to Jonathan Cape and Costa Coffee, Kendal for making this possible and to Hannah Berry and Jamie Barnes for their on the day support.

As well as satisfying your hunger for comic art we know that a critical part of a good festival is being able to keep your energy levels up by fi nding the right kind of food, in the right kind of places and, wherever possible, avoiding long queues. We have done our best to recognise this by working in partnership with some of Kendal’s favourite cafés, bars and restaurants. That isn’t to say there isn’t a fi ne food and drinks offer right across the Town and you’ll fi nd plenty of places to accommodate different tastes and budgets. We highlight here those based at some of our key venues and/or those who have made an extra special effort to celebrate comic art in its various guises helping to make Kendal a comic art town for the weekend.
Comicartfest @ The Brewery Plenty of variety at our main venue on Highgate. See below

The Festival is not-for-profi t so any help we can gather to sustain it in the future is hugely appreciated. We have some donation points at festival locations and we have produced some limited edition merchandise too, the profi ts from which will go back into the festival for 2015. We aim to expand the range of educational and participatory activity in future years and will continue to fi nd new ways of improving the general festival experience. And, of course, we won’t let you down with the quality of guests and programme.
You can help support us by taking home some of our limited edition goodies which have been taken over just a little by our new festival characters – Poblin & Friends. (see page 3 for more on this new gang)

Practical informationThe festival is spread across the town and you will need to leave enough time between events to get from one location to another as we operate a strict no latecomers policy, to ensure maximum enjoyment for audiences and a focused, uninterrupted experience for the artists and creators.
These fi gures will give you an idea of walking times at a steady walking pace but obviously if you have mobility diffi culties, or walk particularly slowly, you may take longer!
It’s a good idea to leave yourself more than enough time, and if you are collecting tickets from the Box Offi ce in advance, be aware that there is likely to be a queue. Our advice is to collect all your tickets for the weekend as early as possible and, if you get chance, to familiarise yourself with the venues in advance.
More detail about getting to Kendal, each event and all the venues is available on our website
