...three shrill whistles altered the entire scheme of my life.

In 1916, I boarded a ship leaving from England. I had been appointed in the American Ambulance Service and was on my way to France when...

A torpedo had been fired at us from a U-boat!

I was young; I craved thrills, and God knows I got them that day. Yet in comparison with what I have been through since, that day

was as tame as a puppet show.

Lower yourflag and we will not harm you!

The German commander had made his offer, but the captain and crew of our ship were in no mood to negotiate with

them. While the passengers were scrambling into the few boats left to us, the submarine commenced shelling the ship.

When I saw the U-boat, I felt shame, for it was a product of my own family’s shipyard

back in San Francisco.

We had built the terrible thing.

Now this creature, created by my brain and hand, had turned into Frankenstein, bent upon

pursuing me to my death.

The Germans continued firing at the boats as they tried to move

away from the sinking ship.Come on,

Nobs.

My dog, Crown Prince Nobbler, and I had no choice. So, we jumped into the sea...

...and started shouting for help.

...I could see many boats caught in a whirlpool, and

people jumping into the water......to save their

lives once again.

Help! Help!

All of a sudden, not far ahead of me...

Come on, Nobs. By strange

fate we have been rescued.

It was an incredible scene of death and desolation, the likes of which I

have never seen, even unto this date.

The pitiful forms of women and children floated about.

Just then, close to the boat’s side, I saw the figure of a girl.

I had never looked upon such perfect features, and I swore that I should live to avenge her murder.

But her eyes opened – she was alive!

I wasted no time in getting her into the boat.

Let me help you, miss.

I thought I was breathing my last when a lifeboat

hurtled upwards from the pit of destruction.

My name is Bowen and

I... I... Do not be nervous, sir, my name is Lys La

Rue.

I hope you are feeling

better.

Brrrrrrrr...

Later, the night enveloped us without even the sight of a speck upon the waters. We

were thirsty, hungry, uncomfortable, and cold.

I was scared for Miss La Rue but I did not know what to do. So, I held her in my arms.

Aiiiieee!!!

Forgive me. It isthe only way to keep you

safe. You will die of exposure if you are not warmed.

I do not remember when I fell asleep, but when I awoke, I saw smoke from a ship on the horizon. I prayed it was an Allied vessel!

I am well...fortunate even. Think of

all the people who died becauseof those murderers! And to think,

at one point, I was engagedto marry a lieutenant in

the German Navy!

Your ship sinks, your rescuers are attacked by a hostile U-boat built by your own family’s shipyard, and your fate is inextricably tied to those of your fellow survivors and adversaries. Then, to make matters infi nitely worse, you land on a remote, prehistoric island that was assumed to be extinct!

How would you survive? Who would you trust and what would you do?

Bowen, our young hero, could never have imagined the adventures he’d be forced to embark upon when he arrived on the inhospitable coast of Caspak and set up camp there. He could never have fathomed having to cope in an alien landscape inhabited by dinosaurs, Neanderthals, aerial monsters and an almost unearthly fl ora and fauna…

The Land That Time Forgot is the fi rst book in the Caspak trilogy, written by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Since 1918, this science-fi ction story has delighted and enthralled millions of readers and will capture your imagination, by bringing to life the wild, ferocious and dangerous island that is Caspak.
