A Message from the Editor

Hello everyone and Season’s Greetings ! There really is a festive feel to the magazine this month, as we enter the time in the Christian calendar where we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and when family and friends gather together to enjoy the season of goodwill.

Father Anthony writes for us on pages 5 and 6, explaining the origins and significance of following the star at Christmas. As usual, our forthcoming events are detailed on page 8, so please read it carefully and put some dates in your diary.

During October and November we hosted two very poignant ceremonies, firstly Trafalgar Day and secondly Remembrance Sunday, reports on these two very special days are on pages 10/11 and 24/25 respectively.

As a community based Parish Church, we are embracing that ethos in the magazine, by featuring Friends Of North Deal on page 12. This piece on the organisation and its achievements, makes for interesting reading and hopefully it may prompt you to join the group and get involved with its activities.

Over pages 16 and 17 we report on an historic lecture given by the ever entertaining Imogen Corrigan during October, our Ride and Stride fund raiser and our monthly Quiz Night.

Returning to the festive theme, on page 18 there is “thank you” from a Gentleman who is very busy at this time of year, to those of you who have donated gifts and your time, for our Christmas Fair on 23rd November. Check out the “Season’s Eatings” feature on page 20, for a great Christmas recipe.

We are hosting a St Andrew’s Day fish supper in the church hall, on Saturday 30th November. We would like to thank Darren Jenkins, who is supplying his own fisherman’s pies to us, as a part donation to this event. Full ticket details are on page 22, they are selling fast !

In our Children’s fun pages we have a special Christmas prize quiz and a festive spot the difference. Finally, everyone at St Andrews would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and if you are not already a regular visitor, please come and join us for our Christmas services and events in the Church.

Father Anthony writes …

Follow the Star! One of the most popular carols for this time of the year is “We three Kings of Orient are”. Strictly speaking, it isn’t a Christmas carol at all – the star and the Wise men – the Magi – don’t appear in the Christmas story until Epiphany, which we remember on January 6th. But accuracy isn’t everything. That star is a potent symbol.

If we venture out of doors after dark and look up on a clear night and if there are no clouds, we are greeted with a wonderful sight of the dark sky studded with the brilliance of the stars and the planets. It increases our sense of wonder and joy at the greatness of God’s creation, and it focuses our attention on something outside our immediate surroundings. The Archbishops of Canterbury and York have sponsored a booklet of prayers and readings to use during the period between Christmas Day and Epiphany. It is called “Follow the Star”. In the Gospel story the Wise Men did just that – they followed the star and it led them as we all know to Bethlehem and to the Christ child. We use the word ‘star’ of all sorts of people – from film stars to football stars – in fact anyone who can inspire us – who can be a role model for us. Lots of these stars and self-appointed celebrities fade as quickly as they rise – they twinkle for a while and then are lost again in the ordinariness of life. The star that the Wise Men followed also twinkled for a while and then disappeared, but what the star pointed to did not fade and vanish.

The Christ the Child grew into Christ the Adult. It is He who is now the star that beckons us and inspires us. It is now he who is ‘the star of wonder’ and ‘the star of night’. In the days of our joys he shares in our joys. In our days of darkness when night seems to last for ever, he comes to pierce that darkness with the light of hope and love. For many people, Christmas is a time of unending happiness. They are fortunate! But for many there is sadness there mixed in with the joy. But for us all there is Christ and in him we can all find companionship and love and joy. Our Christmas services are detailed elsewhere in the magazine and we invite all our readers to follow the Star and share in the joy and fellowship that these offer. May Christ bring you a sense of wonder and of joy and of hope as we

all keep this very special time of the year.

Trafalgar Day - 19th October 2019

Deal & Walmer’s Trafalgar Day Commemorative Service took place with distinguished guests, members and friends gathering to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar. The service was led by Father Roger Marsh and Parade Marshall, Ron Williams. In attendance was Deputy Lieutenant of Kent - Mr Bill Fawcus , the Chairman of Dover District Council - Cllr Michael Conolly, Mayor of Deal - Cllr Eileen Rowbotham , Mayor of Dover - Cllr Gordon Cowen , Mr Nick Tomaszewski representing the Federation of the Cinque Ports and Mr Chris Hobbs East representing the Guild of Macebearers along with The Deal & Dover Sea Cadets. Our own County Chairman Mr David Woodnott and his wife Sharon also joined us along with a congregation of 70 . Unfortunately, on this occasion HMS KENT were unable to attend, nevertheless, Lieutenant Commander James John, sent apologies on behalf of Ships Company as they are in the Strait of Hormuz providing support to UK shipping in the region. During her closing address, Branch Chairman, Carol Stickler said that today, especially today, we give thanks for the courage and good service of countless generations of sailors who have and continue to defend and uphold the safety of the seas of these islands and felt sure that all would join the Branch in sending them. Heartfelt readings giving an insight into The Battle of Trafalgar and prayers were included in the Service, read touchingly by a variety of the guests. The Last Post and Reveille was sounded by Mr Nigel Bogue from the Victory Wartime Band.

Our thanks also went to the 9 Standard Bearers who joined us in their finery; their presence was much appreciated. On completion of the service, wreaths were laid at the altar and later placed at The Calvary in the Garden of Rest.

On completion of the Service a delicious buffet lunch, which was provided by The Spires in Deal High St, along with a glass of wine was enjoyed in the Church Hall. Deal & Walmer Branch would like to thank “Head Quarters” for the funding made available for the event and we look forward to seeing members of the Association again next year supporting a County Event.

FOND is a non-party group for people who love Deal and live and work in the town including those who come here regularly or only occasionally. It was originally formed in 1986 to contest a proposal by Dover District Council to build houses on the playing field on Western Road. This land was given to the people of Deal by Lord Justice Charles. After much campaigning by a committed group of volunteers, the proposal was defeated. Whilst the footprint of the changing rooms now houses a Pre-school Nursery the remaining area is a playing field administered by the North Deal Partnership. Since those early days FOND has continued to work and campaign for a sensible approach to development in North Deal, participating in activities which benefit the community. Planning has always been at the top of the list of FOND concerns and 12 years ago we were invited to have a representative on Deal Town Council Planning Committee as a co-opted member. This enables us to debate, although our representative does not have voting powers. We have been able to advise people who contact us with concerns about planning issues. Over the years we have (amongst other activities), surveyed and compiled a list of missing street name plates which DDC then replaced, campaigned to get the broken pavers replaced in the Conservation Area , persuaded DDC to create wheelchair access to the promenade at the top of Enfield Road, and to add an additional step to the hand railed crossing points along the promenade. We have also refurbished over a hundred memorial benches along the promenade. We hold fund raising events and some of the beneficiaries have included Deal Volunteer Centre, Citizens Advice Bureau, Sandown Castle Gardens and Deal Museum. We are always open to new ideas and would love to hear from anyone who has an idea about a new project which we could help with. If anyone would like to join the Friends of North Deal or make us aware of local causes which would benefit from a donation from our annual fund raiser, please contact us via email at [email protected].

Imogen Corrigan’s THE MEN BEHIND THE PEN. On Tuesday October 1st, 22 of us - including spouses and friends - settled back to be enlightened and entertained by Imogen. We learnt of the work of various scribes and artists with colourful illustrations interspersed with numerous asides and origins of (now) common sayings such as ‘reading between the lines’ due to the scribe having to avoid having to write on the lines scored to keep the writing level and red letter days when certain days in a list were written in red ink. She told us of committees formed to decide

which works were to be copied; of the origins of the parchments and vellum; of the inks and quills which were made from goose feathers which had to be sharpened frequently by knives which were also used to eradicate mistakes. After the talk we enjoyed a ’cuppa’ and a slice of delicious cake made by Sue Harper.

Ride and Stride Many many thanks to the intrepid walkers and riders, (and their extremely generous sponsors) who have raised the record sum of £601.80 of which St. Andrews will receive back half for church funds. Special thanks goes to Ellen Reeves who at 8 years old visited 9 churches by bicycle. Maybe next year YOU could manage to visit at least 3 churches, (St A’s, S G’s and Trinity all being within market and town centre reach of Saturday shopping!) And with an extra £5 or two we could reach a huge total.

St Andrew’s Monthly Quiz Night A great night was had at St Andrew’s monthly fundraising quiz, on Tuesday October 1st.The word is spreading fast around the Parish and the Town as a whole, on its success. We raised more funds during our October and November Quizzes and our thanks go out to Rita and Carol for organising the event and hosting the evening as quiz masters.. Please put the next dates in your diaries. You don’t need to come with a ready made team. It’s a great way to make new friends!

Seasons Eatings - Snowman Biscuits Ingredients: 125g butter, softened

125g golden caster sugar

1 egg, beaten

1 tsp vanilla extract

250g plain flour, plus extra for

dusting

400g white fondant icing

icing sugar, for dusting

100g pack mixed red, yellow,

black and blue ready-to-roll icing

tube white icing, for sticking

tube black icing

Method:

1. Heat the oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Cream the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy, then beat in the egg and vanilla. Stir in the flour and mix to a fairly soft dough. Tip onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently. Put the dough on a plate, cover and chill for at least 2 hrs.

2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to a thickness of around 0.5cm. Use a cookie cutter or water glass to stamp out 7cm rounds. Re-roll the trimmings and repeat.

3. Transfer the biscuits to two lined baking trays and bake for 8-14 mins until the edges turn lightly golden in colour. Leave to cool.

4. To decorate, roll out the white fondant icing on a surface lightly dusted with icing sugar. Stamp out 7cm circles using the same cookie cutter or glass as before, then use a dab of the white tube of

Page 21: The Lantern - dealstandrews.org.uk€¦ · Saturday 7th 8am-1pm St Andrew’s in the Undercroft Tuesday 10th 12 noon Ladies Group Christmas Lunch at the Three Compasses Thursday 19th

21

icing to stick a fondant round on each biscuit.

5. Knead together some of the yellow and blue icing to make green icing, then do the same with the red and yellow icing to make orange (alternatively, buy separate packs of each colour).

6. Roll out one icing colour at a time. Stamp out a 7cm circle of icing, cut in half and stick on for a hat. Cut a strip of another colour and make some markings to make it look like the elasticated band of a hat, then trim to fit and stick on. Repeat with all the biscuits, mixing and matching colours.

7. Decorate the hats with icing spots and stripes, if you like. Roll out balls of coloured icing, poke holes all over with a cocktail stick and stick on as pom poms. Mould lumpy balls of the orange icing for noses and roll out balls of the black icing for eyes.

8. Press down to flatten, then stick on with white icing. Use the tube of black icing to pipe rows of dots for the smiles. Leave to set. Will keep for up to five days in an airtight container.

Remembrance Day at St Andrew’s

There was a great turnout at St Andrew's Church, for the Remembrance Day Service on 10th November, with 78 adults and 6 children in attendance for the service then joined by more outside for the act of remembrance.

Many of the congregation and parishioners contributed to the stunning poppy which hung in the Church during Remembrance week. The piece is the result of a huge nationwide community effort, one which earned a Community Award from the Royal British Legion earlier this year. Measuring 4m square, it is made up of 1568 knitted and crocheted squares, each representing a single day of World War 1 and the 600 plus lives lost on each. Conceived and led by Pat Wilson, who stitched it together, it was finally completed in St Andrew’s Church Hall last November.

St Andrew’s Bond Scheme Ever since I took over from Margaret Adey in 2003 to organise the bond scheme I have wondered why we do it just before Christmas! There is so much going on at the church then - let alone in our own lives with Christmas coming up - and it is quite labour intensive with all the letters to be sent out, money to be collected, receipts to be delivered etc so I have made an executive decision and will be sending the letters round after new year in January. I hope no one will object’s to this. Participants pay £15 per year to have a number and there is a monthly draw on the last Tuesday of each month - except for December when it is the last Tuesday before Christmas. The prizes are £15 for first prize, £10 for second and £5 for third. The Christmas prizes are £25, £15 and £10. The bond scheme generates a profit of just over £1000 for St. Andrews so I hope many of you will join up again in the new year - 2020.
