LAURA KIRAR c o l l e c t i o n

A designer with the soul of an artist, laura Kirar completed her degree in sculpture and interior

architecture at the prestigious School of the Art institute of chicago. After moving to new York

in 1994, Kirar worked in high-end residential interiors as a furniture designer before founding

tru Partners inc. in 1999. Since then, she’s overseen numerous projects ranging from luxury

residences in new York city to a signature loft for Starwood hotels at the W Dallas. her passion for

artistic exploration in all mediums has continued to infuse her work with originality and thoughtful

attention to detail.

Kirar’s celebrated first collection for Baker expressed her affection for, and deft hand with,

influences from turn-of-the-century Vienna and the beauty of the Japanese decorative vocabulary.

Melded with her deep understanding of the classical and modernist ideals, the collection expressed

perfectly her interest in a coherent, personal and varied vision for the interior. laura Kirar’s latest

pieces for Baker evoke the simple pleasures that define casual luxury. this year, Kirar unveils what

she describes as “a natural evolution of my work and perfect complement to my first collection.”

her new pieces move toward a more modern look while remaining true to her design philosophy:

a reverence for craft, use of authentic materials and thoughtful, elegant details.

Dining

Rather than limiting herself to any one period or style, laura Kirar favors strong forms often

elegant in their simplicity. the Vienna Dining table, with a crisp silhouette and just the hint of

a curve, speaks to designs that not only work but work better over time. the Dansu Sideboard

takes that idea another step by adding shape, texture, and the sense of a found object. in a

very different way, the Vienna and Abrazo designs acknowledge that a Dining chair is in fact

sculpture, always viewed in the round, with a unique opportunity for color. like the elegant man

or the handsome woman, these forms look good in any manner of dress.

educated as a sculptor, laura Kirar brings that same sense of mass, volume and proportion to

her furniture designs. the Muji chair, with its compelling shape and compound curves, is literally

a work of art. While more subtle, the claro Sectional has the presence and scale to comfortably

define even a large room. together with a diverse assortment of occasional forms—from the

high-touch craftsmanship of the Dorada cocktail table to the high-style geometry of the gandt

and lien tables—there is an authenticity to the items and an approachability to the rooms. the

result is less a stage than a story.

the laura Kirar collection is a balance between things original and things gathered. the studied

nonchalance of the Vienna Bed demonstrates that the focal point of a room can be different, or

even exotic, without the ornament that tires over time. By contrast, the Poignet Bachelors chest

draws on elements of vintage jewelry for a hint of glamour. even the teabox cabinet, with its

bold form and bolder lacquer, mixes easily with the rest of the bedroom. this is art on a large

canvas, effortless, but rarely expected.
