The 70th Annual Chapter Banquet was held at Holton High School on May 12th. More than 100 members and guests attended the dinner and awards ceremony.

The evening began with a greeting from Chapter President, Trevor Ashcraft and invocation from Lauren Hower, Greenhand President. Following the potluck dinner was a drawing of landscaping rocks designed and created by Dennis Malmburg. Proceeds from the drawing will be used as leadership scholarships for the chapter.

After the dinner, all the members and guests adjourned to the auditorium for the awards ceremony. The awards portion began with a slideshow of chapter pictures from this past year. Then the 2006-2007 chapter officers conducted the FFA opening ceremonies.

The first awards of the night were proficiency awards. This award is given to members who excel in their Supervised Agricultural Experience program. Carlene McManigal then presented the FFA Creed. Carlene participated in the Northeast District Creed Speaking competition. The next awards given out were for the many members who were the top individuals from the chapter in the district FFA Career Development Events.

Next, Chapter Advisors Jason Larison and Alex Bartel recognized the State Champions from this year and last year. First to be recognized was the National Par-law team placing fourth at last year’s National FFA Convention. The National Reserve Champion Horse Judging Team was then recognized. Finally, the 2006-2007 State Floriculture team that is going to nationals this fall was recognized. Tiffany Dugan, Whitney Gragg, Calla Jarboe, and Charli Miller are the team members.

Following this was the keynote speaker, Carly Whorton, Holton High School graduate and Kansas State FFA Sentinel. Next, was the recognization of Academic Awards presented to members for their excellence in the classroom. Forty-three members were given this award.

Carl Jarboe represented the Jackson County Conservation District in presenting their speech contest awards. Trevor Ashcraft placed first in this contest.

The presentation of Greenhand Degrees followed the speech awards. Receiving Greenhand Degrees were 16 Freshmen finishing the Ag Explorations program.

The 2006-2007 Greenhand Officer Team then presented the silver pins of the Chapter Degree. Twenty-four Sophomores received this degree.

The next degree ceremony was the Honorary Degree. Receiving the Honorary Degree were Denny and Donna Ashcraft, parents of retiring officer; Carl and Mariann Jarboe, parents of retiring officer; Dennis Malmberg, donated rocks for Alumni drawing; Sarah and Lora Larison, family of advisor Jason Larison; and Sheri, Katina, and Noah Bartel, family of advisor Alex Bartel.

The Alumni report was given by Holton FFA Alumni President Denny Ashcraft. Mr. Larison and Mr. Bartel then presented special awards. First was the DeKalb Award, presented to a senior that shows outstanding leadership. Matt Spade was the recipient of this award. The Best Record Book award was given to Kelsey Beel for her SAE record book. The Marvin Decker Memorial plaque honoring the retiring president was given to Trevor Ashcraft. Ashcraft was also named the Chapter Star in Placement. Dillon Klahr was named the Chapter Star Greenhand. The 2006-2007 retiring officers were then recognized for their year of leadership and service.

The officers then gave out participation plaques to the top five most active members in the chapter. Matt Spade- 5th, Curt Bontrager-4th, Leah Day-3rd, Kayla Klahr-2nd, and Justin Allen-1st. Concluding the banquet was the introduction of the new officers. The newly installed officers ended the banquet by conducting closing ceremonies.

State Convention

Holton FFA members spent numerous hours studying and getting ready for their CDE’s at the State CDE contests. 29 members participated, some in more than one CDE. The 79th Annual Kansas State FFA Convention was held May 29 through June 1. Nineteen Holton FFA members traveled to Manhattan for the convention to compete in public speaking or parliamentary procedure, participate in State Chorus or be recognized on stage.

The first day, C.J. Lehnherr, Sam Eubanks, Kate Gooderl, Kelsey Beel and Kelsey Korte, began their practices as a part of the State FFA Chorus. Also, Morgan Riederer, Kayla Klahr, Trevor Ashcraft, Calla Jarboe, Laura Jarski, and Melissa Nelson, all on the Parliamentary Procedure team came out. The parlaw team competed with other teams across Kansas in the semi-finals round.

The following day began with more members traveling to Manhattan, to watch the parlaw team compete in finals and be recognized. Liz Jarski and Calla Jarboe competed in Extemporaneous Speaking and Trevor Ashcraftin Prepared Public Speaking. All three did an excellent job and represented Holton well in the state speaking contests.

The same day, members visited the Career Show at the Alumni Center at KSU. That evening brought the first session of convention. The ranking of the parliamentary procedure contest was announced during the session. The team did a great job and placed fourth in the state.

Also recognized were top CDE teams at State CDE’s. Our chapter’s Floriculture team consisting of Tiffany Dugan, Whitney Gragg, Calla Jarboe, and Charli Miller finishing 1st was recognized. Calla and Tiffany were recognized for their hard work in the Nursery/Landscape State CDE, receiving college scholarships. After the session adjourned, members gathered in a more informal setting for a night of dancing and fun at the Manhattan Mall.

Thursday began bright and early with the second session, where the first ranking of the National Chapter Awards were announced. Holton was one of the top 16 chapters in Kansas so the chapter was ranked in the areas of Community, Chapter, and Student Development for the Triple Crown Award. In the area of Community Development, Holton placed third. Also, during the second session, Holton High School graduate and FFA alumni, Carly Whorton gave her retiring address as the 2006-2007 Kansas FFA Sentinel. Following her address, Chase Bontrager, Megan Maxwell, and Brandon Hill, Holton FFA Alumni were recognized for receiving the highest degree offered in the FFA organization, the American FFA Degree. Austin Winter was also recognized during the Second Session. Austin was the state winner with his proficiency award, Agricultural Mechanics Repair & Maintenance – Placement.

June Chapter meeting- June 13 at Sara Smith’s pond. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. Hot dogs, s’mores, fishing and fun. Directions: Go four miles east out of town on Hwy 16. Go to the anhydrous tanks on the south side of the highway. Turn north on V road. Go 1 mile to the intersection of V and 238th. The pond is on the east side of V raod close to the intersection. If you get lost, call Sara-364-7356 or Larison-364-0673. July Chapter meeting- July 18 at Praire Lake. Meeting includes refreshments, games and fun (Volleyball of course!!)

Summer Events

Leadership School. Holton tied for third with their average of individual scores. Liz Jarski, junior, represented the chapter by being named ninth high individual. Matt Spade, Calla Jarboe, and Trevor Ashcraft were also recognized for earning their State Degrees.

Finally, the last session of the convention brought very exciting news. First, Holton was recognized for their effort in collecting pop tabs for Ronald McDonald house. The chapter was second in the amount of pop tabs collected. The chapter collected close to 126 pounds of tabs from drives at the elementary schools.

The exciting news of the night was Holton won the Triple Crown Award. Everyone’s hard work paid off for the year. Receiving the Triple Crown means Holton is the top chapter in the state. Finally, members of the chorus performed for the last time this year. Everyone did a great job, not just in chorus but parlaw, speaking, and other events.

Also on Thursday, the State FFA Convention Chorus made their first appearance. Kelsey Beel, Kelsey Korte, Sam Eubanks, Kate Gooderl, and C.J. Lehnherr represented our chapter as chorus members. During the third session, the state officers recognized their high schools and advisors. Carly Whorton, State FFA Sentinel recognized HHS activities director, Mitch Beims and her FFA Advisors Jason Larison and Alex Bartel.

On Thursday’s evening seesion, Carly Whorton recognized her family, giving Honorary State Degrees to her parents. The National Chapter Award – Chapter Development ranking was announced, naming Holton – fourth in this area. The keynote speaker then gave her motivation speech.

Friday, June 1, was the last day of convention. During the fifth session, Holton was recognized for placing high in Student Development. The chapter was also recognized for members’ knowledge of FFA events and facts for the FFA Information test, given during

August Chapter meeting- TBA at the Holton Public Pool. Also, beach volleyball and food. Points Trip- June 25-27. Top active members are traveling to Nebraska for canoeing, camping, and other activities.Relay for Life- June 29th at the Jackson Heights Track. The theme is Superheroes. Help support cancer research and finding a cure. Everyone is invited to attend. Also, those still with fundraising money, you can turn it in there.
