Five general meetings of the Society were held, at which the following papers were read:

There was also a Social at the Newarke Houses Museum on 6 November.

The following meetings of the Melton Mowbray and District Branch were held:

16 January Archa:ological and Historical films. 13 February Members' evening. Miss E. Needham: "Grime's Graves"; Mrs.

M. Gill: "Excavations at Welpington"; R. C. Burnell, Esq. : "Leicester: some places of interest".

13 March J. A. Daniell, Esq., A.M.A.: "Eighteenth-Century Life in Leicestershire".

24 April Annual General Meeting. P. E. Hunt, Esq.: "Some Melton Women".

1 May Nicholas Thomas, Esq., F.S.A.: "Excavations at the Bronze Age Cemetery on Snail Down, Wiltshire".

Mrs. C. A. B. Elliott resigned from the Committee after many years' service with it and the Excursions Sub-Committee, for which the Committee records its gratitude. Mr. Hugh Collinson and Mrs. W. A. North were elected to vacancies and Mr. J. A. Daniell was elected as the Society's representative on the Leicestershire Rural Community Council.

The Committee wish to record their gratitude to Mr. A. Thornley for his cooperation in the production of Transactions during this difficult year and also to Mrs. E. M. Dickson and Miss M. Rippin for organising tea after meetings.

Christmas cards were printed of Ha1laton church (1842) and the Chapel of the Old Wyggeston's Hospital by A. H. Paget. Both were well received.

After several years' negotiation the Inland Revenue has again undertaken to refund income tax on Deeds of Covenant to learned societies, which has resulted in a substantial balance this year. In common with similar bodies this Society is much indebted to the Society of Antiquaries and the British Academy who brought and won the test case.

Nevertheless this balance will soon be absorbed in increased printing charges and a further hundred members will alone ensure a secure and expanding economy. The Society hopes that all those who care for the history of this county will offer it their practical support. There is an ample supply of papers worthy of publication,

but much work needs to be done in the conservation of buildings and minor monuments not protected by national sources. This year a grant has been made towards the repair of the stocks at Grimston, and a protest initiated with a view to preserving the _fourteenth-century Moat House at Appleby Magna, but much more could be achieved if more funds were available.

Proposals have been put forward by the Hon. Treasurer to change the date of the financial year from I January to 30 April for administrative convenience and the amended rules are attached.

During the summer several teams from the Melton Mowbray branch made records of tombstones for Mr. Colin Ellis's survey. The branch made representations to the Urban District Council who subsequently refurbished and re-hung the bread door in Egerton Gardens. This door, removed from "The Limes", Sherard Street, was of medieval date. The Society is grateful to the local Council for their prompt co-operation.

The Society acknowledges with gratitude a further grant of £25 from the Education Committee of the Leicester County Council.

During 1959 Mr. Brand, a member of long standing, died in his ninetieth year. Walter Brand, F.R.I.B.A., joined the Society in 1923 and served on the Committee from 1924 to 1951. For most of that time he was a member of the Excursions SubCommittee, acting as its Executive Secretary from 1924 to 1933. All who took part in the excursions he organised will remember with lively pleasure the interest of the places visited, the erudition of the guides chosen and the detailed care for members' every comfort. Mr. Brand had a true antiquarian's eye for ancient buildings and delighted in the craftsmanship of former ages; the preservation of such artifacts was very dear to his heart.

During the year 16 new members were elected and 50 resigned or died. The total membership at the end of the year was 469.

Excursions

During the summer the usual four excursions were arranged and, by way of experiment, a short evening tour. They were, on the whole, well attended. The first, on 6 June, the only inclement day of the season, was conducted by Mr. J. A. Daniell, and was to churches in the Melton area. Members first saw Wartnaby and Ab Kettleby, simple, pleasing buildings that were beautifully clean and well kept. After tea, at the King's Head, Melton Mowbray, they went on to Wyfordby, another simple, early church, a resort of church mice, and, on the way home the party made a brief valedictory halt at the decaying building at Brentingby.

On 3 July an evening tour was organised in Leicester. A coach party assembled at 6.15 p.m. and went to All Souls' church and were welcomed by the vicar, the Rev. E. C. B. Dunford. Professor J. Simmons then spoke about G. F . Bodley, the architect, and pointed out some of the remarkable features of this, one of his last commissions. The company then proceeded to the Cathedral, where they were greeted on behalf of the Provost and Chapter by the Canon Chancellor and the Canon Treasurer. Professor Simmons then spoke about the building, with special reference to the extensive nineteenth-century restoration and rebuilding, and to some of the unusual monuments, both inside and out. The proceedings ended with coffee and water-colours at 20 Victoria Park Road.

The whole-day outing was into Derbyshire. A coach-load left Leicester in good time and reached Haddon Hall according to plan at 11.15 a.m. More than an hour was spent viewing this delectable mansion, members especially enjoying the Chapel and the Long Gallery. After a break for lunch at Bakewell, the party set out again for Hardwick and, despite an unscheduled and extended view of parts of Derbyshire, arrived on time at Hardwick Hall, where they were joined by a small party from the Melton branch of the Society. Members were tremendously impressed by the overwhelming Bess of Hardwick's overwhelming home. After a very good tea in the Great Kitchen, the company returned to Leicester through a thunderstorm.

Mr. David T.-D. Clarke conducted a party, some 70 strong, to three churches and chapels in east Leicestershire on 20 August. The first was that at_ Nosele:r, where the Hon. Edith Hazlerigg welcomed members. Although extensive repair work was in progress, members were able to enjoy a good look at this interesting

building. They went on, an impressive cavalcade of coach and cars, through gentle, useful country to Launde, where they saw the priory chapel, once part of a larger church. After tea, at the Crown Hotel at Oakham, they proceeded to the church at Withcote, where again members were gratified to see that repairs were in progress. This was a particularly pleasant afternoon and members and their friends greatly enjoyed their Honorary Secretary's informed and racy commentary upon the buildings visited and country traversed.

On 19 September Mr. F. S. Cheney conducted a party of 40 members and friends to Belton and Pickworth in Lincolnshire. At Belton Mr. Cheney outlined briefly the acquisition of the estate by the Brownlow family, the building of the house and its subsequent alterations. The party then enjoyed a leisurely tour of the mansion and much interest was shown in the mementoes of the family's connections with royalty, especially with the Duke of Windsor. After tea, which was taken in the orangery, the party went into the church where Mr. Cheney drew attention to the main features and to the remarkable series of monuments to the Brownlow and Cust families. The party then drove on through several pleasant villages to Pickworth church. After indicating the various periods of the largely unrestored building and furnishings, Mr. Cheney explained at some length the interesting series of wall paintings which were uncovered and preserved by Mr. Clive Rouse in 1947.

Donations from the excursions funds were made to all the churches visited. The Melton Bowbray branch of the Society also carried out a full and successful

programme of excursions :
