Throughout the season of Lent, the Confir-mation youth will be participating in a Penny
War between the 6th, 7th and 8th grades. The
goal is not so much to collect pennies as to
raise as much money as possible for a good
cause. This year’s proceeds will be donated
to the Foster Closet of Dickinson County
which is committed to helping reduce the
financial strain on families caring for children
who are not biologically theirs. They provide
clothing and other essential items needed
for the child’s/children’s care.
Here’s the fun part:
The students get points for every penny
in their jar, but the silver and paper
money subtract points.
If you want a particular grade to win –
put lots of paper money and silver in the
other two jars and put all your pennies
in the jar of the grade you are support-
ing. The real winners are the children & their
foster families – lots of cash is good –
just think about which jar you want to
put it in.
The jars for each grade will be in the Fire-
side Room beginning on Ash Wednesday,
Feb. 26th until Easter. The winning grade will
receive a pizza party when the war is over.
Everyone is invited to join in the fun and help share God’s love in a tangible way with
our friends in the community.
Let’s Make February Pastor
Appreciation Month…
“A new commandment
I give to you,
that you love one another:
just as I have loved you,
you also are to love one another.
By this all people will know
that you are my disciples,
if you have love
for one another.”
John 13:34-35
We are so blessed to have Pastor Paul here at Our Saviour’s! God knew exactly what we
needed when he sent him to us … our “Yooper” Pastor… faithful, committed, steadfast and
humble.
Please make a special effort this month to pray for Pastor Paul and Gretchen, and to show
your appreciation, personally, any way you like…notes, spoken words, little gifts, etc. We
all know that behind every good man is an even better woman -- so don’t forget Gretchen.
She is such a blessing… talented, sweet, patient, and beautiful… sharing her husband with
our entire church, while encouraging and uplifting him in his efforts.
Our Sunday, February 9th, Fellowship Hour will be in honor of Pastor and Gretchen. We
will have special treats, as we enjoy this time together. On the table will be a basket for
your notes of appreciation.
Thank You!
On behalf of Breitung Township Schools, I
would like to thank you for your generous
donation to the Backpack Blessings Program.
With your donation, we will be able to con-
tinue to fill 50 food bags every Friday and
also over the holiday breaks. In these food
bags, students can count on 2 breakfasts, 2
lunches, snacks, milk and fruit cups. We also
like to periodically add (in separate bags)
toothbrushes, toothpaste, body wash and school supplies. These bags are placed dis-
creetly in the students lockers to protect
confidentiality. These bags go to the at risk
youth (K-12) at Breitung Township Schools.
Thank you so much for caring about our
Flivver students.

With the New Year, we have decided to go
back to our video series What’s In The
Bible? You might remember that this series
was put together by the same folks who cre-
ated the much-loved VeggieTales videos.
We started January with DVD 8: Words to
Make Us Wise (Psalms, Proverbs, and
The Writings). We talked about how life
can, at times, be like carrying a heavy back-
pack -- full of worries and burdens. We learned that we don't have to carry all those
worries around with us. The Bible tells us
that God will carry our burdens for us. We
used our watercolors to paint pretty flow-
ered wall hangings with this verse…
Psalm 46:1
“God is our refuge and strength,
an ever present help in trouble.”
The next week Miss Joy
squeezed all of the
toothpaste out of a
tube and then told us to
put it back inside. Of
course, we couldn’t.
She compared that
toothpaste to words
we say. We need to be
careful with the words
we use because, once
they are said, we can’t
put them back in our
mouths. The old rhyme "Sticks and stones
may break my bones, but words can never
hurt me" sounds nice, but it just isn't true.
Words can hurt.
We made kind words out of “toothpaste”
yarn and practiced this verse…
Proverbs 12:18
“Reckless words pierce like a sword,
but the tongue of the wise
brings healing.”
We continued with DVD 9: God Speaks!
(Isaiah, Jeremiah & the Prophets). We learned all about Daniel in the Lions’
Den, made a fun foldable lion, and prayed…
Dear Heavenly Father, we may not face
the same kind of lions in our lives
that Daniel did, but we do face many
problems which we need your help
in overcoming. Help us to be faithful in
prayer and in obeying what
you have commanded us to do. We ask
this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
We ended the month with Jonah and the
Whale. We read all about Jonah’s adven-
ture and, to help us remember this lesson,
we each got to make our own fleece stuffed
whale. In our closing prayer we thanked
God for His Word and for the lessons we
can learn from studying it. We know we
can learn from the mistakes of others and
from our own mistakes, too. God will help
us as we try to always do what is best for us
and for those around us.
Remember, God Club meets every Wednes-
day, after school, in the Creation Station classroom. There’s always room for more!
Miss Joy
Sunday School
In Sunday School we started off learning
about how God made each of us with spe-
cial talents. We learned that he gave us
these talents to help us teach others about
his love. We learned that we were saved
by God’s grace and because of his Grace
our sins are forgiven and we will have
eternal life. We do not have to do any-
thing to earn this, but we have these spe-
cial talents and we get to use them to
teach and show others God’s love for us.
We started off by using our talents to
make valentine sun catchers for residents
in a local nursing home. The next week
we used different talents to make pillows
for members of our church that are in the
nursing home or are home alone. The children also made muffins that we gave at
the Nursing Home to our members and
also their caregivers as a treat. Many of
these people were so touched that they
were brought to tears that someone
thought of them.
The following Sunday the
children invited the Light at
the Inn residents to worship with us as they
sang in Church and then join us for a congre-
gation wide Pancake Breakfast. The children
served and visited with all and a basket was
put out for free will offer-
ing. The children raised
$336 which they used to
purchase food for the First
Lutheran Food Pantry,
pictured below.

Just want to thank the church for all you do
All year. I never seem to say “thank you”
enough. It is so plain to see that the Lord is
there working through each and every one
of you and we know your dedication has
not gone unnoticed. He sees all and you
will get your reward in due time. God
bless!

We are happy to be back at school after a
long break for Christmas! We have been
working hard learning about hibernation,
migration, adaptation and nocturnal ani-
mals. We have created some great pro-
jects to go with those lessons. We have
also been reading stories and doing pro-
jects about snowmen (The Pre-kindergarten
class made some amazing snowmen in the
front of the church)! Groundhog’s day is
coming up and we will be looking for his
shadow!
Our preschoolers are doing a great job
with letter recognition and with their
names and their friend’s names! We have
started using scissors and are working
really hard at learning to open and close
our fingers with them. We created beauti-
ful hearts for Valentine’s Day. They are
hanging on our bulletin board!!
The Pre-Kindergarten class is doing an
amazing job with letter sounds and has
been working really hard with recognizing
their last names. We are still working
hard at our writing skills and doing great!
Our Bible stories this month have included
Hannah and Samuel, David and Goliath and
Daniel and the Lion’s Den, learning that God
always hears our prayers and He speaks to
us in all different ways. We can always
count on God to be there for us every day.
Whenever we need help all we have to do is
pray and we can also say thank you to God
with prayer.

BASIC (Becoming A Servant In Christ) is our
middle school youth group. Lately we
have been busy helping out in all kinds of
ministries around the church... Several of
our kids have learned how to run the sound
for church services and have been doing
wonderful job! What a blessing it has been
for us that they have shared their talents this
way.
Another great talent they have is doing skits
at our monthly service for people with spe-
cial needs. What a wonderful way to share
the Gospel. We look forward to doing
more in the coming months.
Our group has also decorated boxes with
messages of God's love and then filled them
with groceries for people that come to the
church looking for help.
It is a joy to see these kids finding so many
ways to be the hands and feet of Jesus! BA-
SIC is for grades 6-8. Join us for snacks and
fellowship in the youth room on Sundays
from 9:40-10:40am.
(Photo does not include the 3 boys who also
helped but disappeared before I could take their picture!)

We continue to collect non-perishable
groceries for the First Lutheran Food
Pantry in the cart outside of the Fireside
Room. If each person brings just one food
item to church with them each Sunday we
can fill the basket. The groceries get deliv-
ered to First Lutheran when the basket is
full.
Pastors Link
At this time of year I always struggle a little
bit… well actually a LOT of bit! The big pas-
toral push of Advent and Christmas is done
with and there’s a lull before Lent, Holy
Week and Easter. We’ve had a high and
now we’re entering the low of Lent before
another big high. Besides this, there is
Seasonal Affective Disorder, triggered by the
curse of having a birthday only a week after
Christmas, when everyone is burned out on
gifts and parties and such.
Besides that, as I age I am finding I much
prefer the sunshine and warmth of the other
seasons besides winter. I like getting outside,
hearing the birds, smelling the soil, marveling
at the beauty of the trees leafing out and the
flowers pushing up to unfold their blooms
and feeling the warm air. Maybe you find
yourself in the same condition? Or maybe
you are reading this in Florida or Texas or
Arizona… Scripture reminds us that it’s a
blessing to patiently walk and wait through
each season of the year and of our life,
because it’s a reminder that our Lord’s
world keeps on going as He has ordered it.
This is true, and it is a good reminder. It’s
rooted in God’s promise made to Noah
following the flood: “While the earth
remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and
heat, summer and winter, day and night,
shall not cease.” This is right after God’s
promise of never again sending a flood to
destroy all life. Perhaps another way to put
it is like this: we live every day in the bless-
ing and grace of God. Thinking in this way, I
am able to greet each day with the joy and
gladness that comes with knowing that
Christ Jesus has taken away my sins, as far
as the east is from the west. Instead of
sending a flood to destroy all life, God sends His Son to redeem and save all life,
even you and me! “For God did not send
his Son into the world to condemn the
world, but in order that the world might
be saved through him.” And, “In this the
love of God was made manifest among
us, that God sent his only Son into the
world, so that though we may die in the
flesh, we might live forever in the Spirit
through Him.” In this is found true Love;
“Not that we have loved God, but that
He loved us and sent his Son to be the
payment for our sins.”
We have so much to be thankful for and to
rejoice in. Lent is coming, but so is Easter!
Let us prepare ourselves to come and hear
the Word and receive the Sacrament in this
Holy time of waiting. Ash Wednesday is
February 26th with the imposition of ashes.
We’ll have Lenten midweek soup and ser-
vices each Wednesday. Holy Week follows with a week long journey to the cross and
to the open tomb! Please put these on your
calendar. Make hearing the Word and
receiving the Sacrament a part of your
Lenten Journey this year. I am praying for
you. Please pray for me. God bless us on
the journey together.
