Introduction

This is one of a series of "Clan" books that document the genealogical records of the children ofJames Gentry French (1755-1939), who went by his middle name, Gentry. A "clan" is defined asall the descendants of a child of Gentry's by one of his three wives: Margret Amanda Burgner,Louisa Jane McCollum, and Sadie Nancy Shively. Gentry's sons Archie and Waldon had nochildren, so they will not have a clan book. That means the clans are Claude, Sabra, Gilbert,Leonard, Emmett, and Fred (children of Margret); Crawford and Presley (children of Louisa);Beatrice, Virginia, Viola, and Lu Etta (children of Sadie).

The Leonard Clan comprises the descendants of John Leonard French (1892-1935), Gentry andMargaret's son, who went by his middle name, Leonard, and his Tressie June Bowens (1894-1932). Leonard's ancestry may be found in the book James Gentry French and His Three Wives.Gentry's ancestry is included in the book Unknown French to Gentry French - Five Generations.

Having so many family members directly affected by cancer has drawn hospice even closer toFrench's heart. Hospice is primarily a companion organization for a patient, a support groupfor the family and respite care for the caregivers, he said.

Katie Robbins, hospice volunteer coordinator and a social worker, said hospice is basically aprogram that helps people die with dignity. She added that the organization helps makepatients comfortable, assists them with pain management and is in regular contact withpatients' families after they die.

Some of the patients French visits are in their own homes, some live in nursing homes andothers are at the veterans home, he said. As someone who served with the Marines in theSouth Pacific during World War II, French has a high interest in serving his fellow veterans.

French's visits sometimes consist of talking to and listening to the patients, reading to patientsor taking them somewhere. "It depends on what they want," he said.

After a patient has died, hospice volunteers offer bereavement care for their loved ones. Aspart of that, French helped form a men's group about 15 years ago that meets once a month forlunch. The men talk about all kinds of things, from sports to politics. Sometimes a few menhave a side conversation about their losses and how they dealt with their grief, he said.

Robbins said the men's group has been a "really good" thing for men who sometimes feel morecomfortable speaking freely about their feelings with other men.

French acknowledged he must be careful not to let himself get down. He once lost threepatients in one month and doubted whether he wanted to continue with hospice. However, itdidn't take long for him to get back into his volunteering swing.

"You have to know not to go beyond your capabilities -- physically or emotionally," he said.

French would like to see more men volunteer with hospice. He said it is rewarding to walkwith people through the last part of their lives. "We emphasize life rather than dwell on death,"he said.

In addition to his continuing work with hospice and the Red Cross, French works with threeveterans organizations, Boys State, the Junior Law Cadet program, the Nebraska Admirals,and the Grand Island Council for International Visitors. He also used to do fingerprinting atthe Nebraska State Patrol.

Capt. Chris Kolb knew of French by reputation before the two men ever met. "He had areputation for being extremely proficient, caring for his people, and being well versed in StatePatrol policy and procedure. He's very sharp," Kolb said. "He's a genuinely nice guy. He'sgiving of his free time."

He added that French has assisted him with identifying people in old State Patrol photos, thuskeeping some of the office's history from being lost. "He's a good resource," Kolb said.

French said he had to give up the fingerprinting duty when he had a pacemaker put in lastyear. "I don't let it slow me down too much," he said

The fit and trim French said he tries to stay in shape with home workouts. He has been activesince playing sports in high school and college and his time in the military. He knows hisfamily wants him to slow down, but he said it isn't in his nature.

"I have a hard time saying no when I'm asked to help with a community organization," he said."I enjoy people and visiting with them. I feel I'm earning rent for the space I occupy. I getsatisfaction being able to serve my fellow man. If it weren't for volunteers, where would theUnited States be? Volunteers are a vital part of service and a lot of places rely on them."

HASTINGS — Robert D. French, 69, of Hastings, died Thursday, Dec. 1, at his home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the All Saints Chapel with the Rev. W.C. Westmanofficiating. Burial will be in the Parkview Cemetery in Hastings.

Visitation will be until 9 p.m. Friday, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 9 p.m.Sunday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.

Memorials are suggested to the Mary Lanning Hospital Hospice or the Hastings Food Pantry.

Mr. French was born June 11, 1925, in Vona, Cob., to J. Leonard and Tressie (Bowens)French. He graduated from Lincoln Adult High School and attended Nebraska Wesleyan andthe University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He served in the U.S. Navy from Sept. 16, 1943, to May6, 1946. His tour in the Navy included service in the South Pacific.

He married Winifred (Peg) Layton on Oct. 29, 1949, in Hastings.

He worked for the Nebraska Department of Health, the U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot andretired as a switchman/brakeman for the Burlington Northern Railroad after 33 years ofservice.

He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the BurlingtonVeterans Organization.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Kathy Smith of Hastings, Bobbi French ofLincoln and Jane French-Sloan of Lincoln; three sons, Duane of Anchorage, Alaska, Rodneyof Baltimore and Tim of Sheldon, Iowa; eight grandchildren; two brothers, L. Wayne Frenchof Grand Island and Jack French of Spokane, Wash., and two sisters, Marjorie Gillespie ofSpokane, Wash., and Peggie Peterson of Danville, Calif.

Bridging Time

Thirty-two years ago I dove from the Alda Bridge into dimensions of my being I neverknew existed. I was racked with grief at the loss of my mobility. I was tortured by feelingsof being different. I was stunned by the immediate absence of opportunities. I passedthrough the darkness of many days that followed carried by the love of family, the goodnessof friends and neighbors and support made possible by government services and charitableentities.

Looking back, it is the love of family and friends I treasure most. The ability to walk issimply a tool for getting around but for some it served as the measure of whether or not theycould remain close to me. Relationships changed and time passed. Today, I lead a life fewthought possible and I am blessed with an abundance of opportunity.

I honor this day by being grateful to my parents, family, friends and colleagues. Notes for Charles Martin Peterson:After his father Martin died when Charles was 11, he was forced to mature quickly. He tookon many of the household duties, attended school, and worked a part-time job. He did manageat times to sneak off and play baseball. He had a natural ability for most sports. He spent mostof his teen years in Scotts Bluff, NE. When he was 14 he was working in Wyoming, operatingheavy equipment to build a dam and a train tunnel.

He joined the U. S. Navy at 18 and was stationed on Guam. Later he was transferred to theNaval Electronics School, where he marched on the drill team. During this time he met hisfuture wife, Peggie, and they were married July 10, 1955. Sometime later, Charles wasaccepted by the City of Hayward Fire Department, as No. 1 out of 150 applicants. He was afireman, inspector, and then a Captain for 16 years, until he suffered a heart attack while onthe job. He was an organizer and president of Fire Fighters Local 1909 and Alameda CountyCouncil of Fire Fighters. During this time he and two partners started a wholesale burglar andfire alarm distributorship that grew to four branches in three states. They were in business for23 years.

While his three children, Dayna, Lorna, and Chris were growing up, he was involved with GirlScout activities, was Cub Scout and Weeblo leader, and co-president of the P. T. A.

In Charles' four-year battle with cancer, he was an inspiration to many. He was activelyinvolved with the Wellness Community of Walnut Creek. He donated his body to medicalscience at the University of California at San Francisco, after which his ashes were to bescattered over the Pacific Ocean.

Jean Louise French Quinn began her earthly journey on September 9, 1961 inPortland, Oregon and began her heavenly ascent on December 13, 2008 atHopewell Hospice House in Portland, following a brave battle with metastasized coloncancer. She was married for twenty-five years to Michael Quinn, and is theloving mom of Bradley and Barry Quinn.

Jean attended Aloha High School and graduated from Portland CommunityCollege. She had a love for dance and taught aerobics in her younger years, thenworked in the insurance and property management areas. After years as aschool volunteer she began working in the Tigard schools, first at MetzgerElementary as an instructional and learning assistant, then secretary, and finallyat the Tigard Tualatin District office as an executive assistant. Her senseof humor and deep spirit made her a much-loved employee and friend, and her

family thanks all those who supported her in her final months.

While a young mom at the age of twenty-nine Jean was diagnosed withlate-stage colon cancer. She latched onto life for the sake of her boys and held onfor the next eighteen years. Jeans passion for writing earned her a spot inthe book, Chocolate for a Woman's Soul. She loved the beach and her 'furryboys': the late Buck the dog, and cats Bobby and Elvis.

Also surviving are her mom Pat Miller; sister Ann French (Bill Newton);sister Teresa Walker; niece Sara Walker; nephews Maitland French Newton; Joe,Aaron, and Jordan French; stepmother Jacque Ross French; step nieces Crystal andCheryl; stepbrothers Mark and Curtis Ross; and stepbrother Steve Miller.Preceding her in death were her grandparents Edgar and Leifa; father RichardFrench; brother Joseph French; stepfather Frank Miller; and recently hercousins Bob Olsen and Daniel French.

In the words of writer Henry Van Dyke: "There is only one way to get readyfor immortality, and that is to love this life and live it as bravely andfaithfully and cheerfully as we can." Jean lived and loved bravely and wasfaithful to the end. We release her with love.
