William Shaw Campbell, for many years in the consular service of the United States, died at Washington on the 22d, aged 86 years. From 1843 he was consul at Rotterdam for 2t) years,1 and later served in the same capacity In Dresden and at Newcastle-on-Tyne. He was a native of New York.

Prof. John Underner, of Cleveland, O., widely known as an organist and musical director, died on the 24th, after a long illness. Prof. Underner accom­panied Jenny Lind as an accompanist during her triumphal visit to the Unit­ed States. He had been a resident of Cleveland for over fifty years.

At the meeting of the joint scale | committee of the Illinois coal miners j and operators, at Springfield, 111., on | the 25th, the question of rating new mines in Saline and Franklin counties and at Decatur, Tower Hill and Ray­mond were discussed, entirely new con­ditions existing at some of these mines.

Wallace S. Hall, formerly manager l of the Boston office of the American Surety Co. of New York and treasurer of St. Lake's home for convalescents, on the 25th pleaded guilty in Suffolk county superior court to indictments charging the larceny of $238,000 from those Institutions. He was not sen­tenced.
