WE NEED YOUR HELP!
If you are a student, a faculty member or staff member at Central Carolina Technical College
and have used the CCTC library during the past year, we need your input/opinion. We are
planning for next year and we need to know what works and what does not work for you.
We will use your input and ideas to better serve you.
Here are a few things we want your opinion on:
How do you use the library?
What materials do you use the most?
What database do you most often use?
Why do you like about the library?
What would you change?
What would you add to the library?
What would you get rid of?
What kind of activities would you attend?
Do you use Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc?
The following website will take you to our online, library survey. There will also
be paper surveys in the library. Please take a few minutes to fill one of these
out before April 30th so we can add your input to our 2012-2013 Library Plan.

April is National Poetry Month!
What is National Poetry Month? National Poetry Month is a month-long, national celebration of poetry established by the Academy of American Poets. The concept is to widen the attention of individuals and the media—to the art of poetry, to living poets, to our complex poetic heritage, and to poetry books and journals of wide aesthetic range and concern.
Who started it? The Academy of American Poets has led this initiative from its inception in 1996 and along the way has enlisted a variety of government agencies and officials, educational leaders, publishers, sponsors, poets, and arts organizations to help.
What are the goals of National Poetry Month? To highlight the extraordinary legacy and ongoing achievement of
American poets To introduce more Americans to the pleasures of reading poetry To bring poets and poetry to the public in immediate and innovative ways To make poetry a more important part of the school curriculum To increase the attention paid to poetry by national and local media To encourage increased publication, distribution, and sales of poetry books To increase public and private philanthropic support for poets and poetry
Why was April chosen for National Poetry Month? In coordination with poets, booksellers, librarians, and teachers, the Academy chose a month when poetry could be celebrated with the highest level of participation. Inspired by the successful celebrations of Black History Month (February) and Women's History Month (March), and on the advice of teachers and librarians, April seemed the best time within the year to turn attention toward the art of poetry.

Roman Terror by Joe Valcourt
Caesar’s attack dogs chew at the limbs of
children starving in the streets
Praetorian guards strip citizens of gold
Pay, pay, pay dear one
You are a citizen of old
All men beg you
Anoint you as the holy ones.
In the distance fields youthful blood drains
into sewers
Chariots race to the cheering mobs
Patriot gladiators dance
Dark intruders raid the homeland
Rape the torch bearing mistress
Sleep in wine filled baths
O god of the cross
See how our land burns in your wake
The innocent lambs are slaughtered
The seeds of our harvest are scattered
The dreams of liberty are sacrificed in fear
Our death is gratefully expected
The burning germs blister our eyes
Our skin cracks like dried red clay
Approaching blue thunder ignites
As our brain cells decay
Do we still have time to pray
O you feasting actors and orators
Script your rhymes and meters
Denote and dance
The ambushed trance of politicians
Ensnare us compare us to lizards
And market us as fresh meat
In the dark, deep night shadows
Broken bottles perfume the air
Severed limbs and heads hang
Amidst the rubble and romance
The occasional steam and smoke hisses
Half face half heart entwine
Funeral notes echo
Shroud and mask the misery
Haunt the hunted children
Melting on streets
I will carry the sword into oblivion
I will kneel at your feet

Favorite Quote: “I took the road less traveled by and that has made all the difference.” (Robert Frost)
One thing you wish someone had told you about being a grown up: “We value each day more and more as we grow older, especially as we cherish those people who are closest to us.”
What does the library mean to you? “I firmly believe that the library symbolizes ‘higher education’. While the word ‘library’ is derived from the Latin ‘librārium’ meaning ‘bookcase,’ the word has come to mean a collection where we can find contributions to knowledge. These days, we know that online accessibility has extended the library’s presence from its brick-and-mortar existence, though the library as we have known it still ‘exists’. When I myself was an undergraduate freshman in English 101, I wrote an essay in which I illustrated how the flowing water fountain outside of the library on the USC campus where I was studying stood as a metaphor for higher education. I believe the water fountain and the library perfectly complement each other. The accessibility of knowledge ‘freely flows’ for all those who take advantage. Even more importantly, I argued then (and I still believe) that those who take advantage are never the same again. Life takes on new depth and meaning when we access the knowledge a library has to offer. The classroom should be just the beginning of these knowledge explorations. (P.S. I am also married to a librarian.)
