From the Acting Principal and Campus Coordinator Welcome back to the College for our Term 3, we trust you had an enjoyable, relaxing Winter break. It promises to be another busy term with many events crowding the calendar. Our Spring Fair, which proved to be such a success last year, takes place on Saturday 7 th September. We hope to have a large crowd in attendance. The College will hold an Open Day of classrooms for families and potential new students. There will be more rides and attractions, including ‘Skirmish’ and various other activities. A major silent auction will be held in 5/6G and it promises to be fun for the whole family. Have you already booked the Spring Fair into your diaries? We need plenty of volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering please direct your enquiries to our P & F on [email protected]. During the first two weeks of this term we held two events which are worth highlighting. On Friday 26 th July our P & F held its second annual ‘Christmas in July’ celebrations. What a fantastic night! We had over 80 people in attendance who enjoyed a beautiful meal, including a traditional christmas dessert. Entertainment was provided by award winning entertainer Danny Elliot, ‘The Musical Maestro!’, who kept the evening moving along. A special presentation was also made by the P & F. Through the commitment of the P & F committee, and indeed donations and volunteering by parents in our College community, were able to raise and donate $5000 to purchase 10 iPads to be used by our K-6 classes for Reading Groups. This is a phenomenal achievement in such a short period of time (less than 2 years) and is testament to the dedication and commitment to our College of the P & F. Let us convey a very big thank you to all those donors and volunteers who assisted in making this possible. Our second event was our parent teacher interviews, held this week. It was a wonderful opportunity for parents to discuss numerous aspects of their child’s development. If, for any reason, you may have missed an interview, please don’t hesitate to make an appointment with your child’s teacher. Please continue to pray for the College – for all who work and study here; for the families who are linked to the College and for protection and wisdom in all we do. Thanks for your continued support. ‘...and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. In the Classroom with Mrs Grant and 5/6G We have had a fabulous start to the term! Miss Rhiannon Clark is joining us for 6 weeks as she completes her teaching degree and does her final practicum with us. The students have enjoyed looking at where our food comes from, how it is processed and where it goes after the factory. We have been very surprised at how much we, as consumers, are driven by the dollar and do not really think too much about what we waste. We will look at how we can contribute to our society and how we can make a real difference to sustaining our environment. We are looking forward to a fun-filled term of learning. We will contribute to Book Week, Grandparents Day, our College Open Day and much much more. Before we know it, we will be saying goodbye to our first Year 6 students! An exciting term is ahead of us!

In the Classroom with Mrs Grant and Gifted and Talented Students Extending their Thinking Last term several students entered the University of NSW International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS). They participated in the Science and Computing competitions and we are pleased to announce the results of these. Science: Participation Jordan Fleming (5/6G) Credit Jonathon Marcusson (5/6G)

In the Classroom with Mrs Humphreys and Support This term has begun with a bang in Learning Support and so much great learning has been happening. Children continue to move swiftly through the levels of the Multilit program. Many students are becoming superstars at using their decoding skills to attack new words in their reading. This term, the Kindergarten focus group will be looking at their vowel sounds and blending sounds together to read and write small CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words. We will also be learning to read, write and order the numbers 1-20. The Year 1/2 Focus group have started looking at some spelling rules. Our focus this week has been the bossy 'e'. We have learnt that the bossy 'e' when placed at the end of a word, makes the vowel sounds say their name. We are working towards developing super sentences, looking at what sort of words go together to make our sentences great. This week we have looked at ‘Angry (and some not so angry) Verbs' and used these types of words to describe what our ‘Angry Birds' can do! We have begun to learn a new list of sight words, having fun decorating our playground with them so that everyone can learn to read them too! Our older students in our Year 3/4/5 focus group will be looking at discussion texts this term. We began by watching a clip of students of a similar age debating that "Computers are better than books". We used their ideas to construct our own discussion piece, making sure we gave sound arguments for both sides. It may not come as a surprise however, that most of us agreed that computers ARE better than books!

Live Life Well @ School Dairy foods are important for strong bones and teeth. This week is Healthy Bones week. Please make sure you support our learning at College by choosing dairy options for snacks where possible and encouraging your child to make sure they have the recommended dairy intake each day. The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating recommends children eat 2-3 serves of dairy foods, such as milk, cheese or yoghurt each day. Why not try something new this week! Crunch and Sip OPAC has now officially launching a CRUNCH and SIP program. This program encourages students to consume part of their daily-required fruit and vegetables as well as water at school. Please pack a REAL fruit or Vegetable option in your child’s lunch box each day as well as a drink bottle with WATER in it. Healthy Lunch boxes…Need some ideas? We would love to offer parents the opportunity to swap healthy recipes through The Life. This is a great chance to help one another develop healthy eating habits in our children. If you have a recipe that you would like to share please email Miss Edwards at [email protected] or hand a hard copy into the Office before Wednesday each week. Check out some of the great ideas already sent in.

From the Parents’ & Friends’ Association Christmas in July Wow, what a great night for those who attended our second ‘Christmas in July’ event. This year we celebrated the occasion at Harrington Grove Country Club with special guest entertainer Danny Elliott. Danny provided great entertainment leading us through the 12 Days of Christmas and the Hokey Pokey and was a great hit with the kids. The highlight of the night was when staff, students, parents and grandparents danced in unison to ‘Nut Bush City Limits’. At the function, the P&F presented to Mr Beggs a cheque for $5000 which will be used to purchase a number of IPads for the Junior School. As this occasion was a fundraising event, the P&F received generous donations from guests. We are pleased to announce that a little over $500 was raised. We thank those who made a contribution to our fundraising goal. Father’s Day Stall - 28 August 2013 from 9 am There will be over 400 gifts that students can purchase for their special dad, carer, grandpa, pop and/or uncle. Father’s Day Breakfast - 30 August 2013 from 7.30 am Looking for Mums to assist with the Father’s Day Breakfast. If you can spare a couple of hours, please contact Mrs Lynch or Mr Beggs with your details. College Open Day and Spring Fair – 7 September 2013 The College Open Day and Spring Fair is proudly supported by the P&F Committee. We are seeking volunteers to help set up, sell cakes, drinks, gifts as well as assist with the BBQ and pack up. If you can help in any way for a short or a long time, we welcome your assistance. If you are unable to help on the day, perhaps you can contribute to our cake stall. We need cakes, muffins, cupcakes, slices or any spring fair treats for our cake stall. A dedicated Open Day and Spring Fair Co-ordinator is currently sourcing stall holders, exhibitors and volunteers to be part of this event. A separate email address has been set up for the Spring Fair, so if you have any ideas, details of potential stall holders, exhibitors or can volunteer your time, please contact Janine Manton at [email protected] More information about the Open Day and Spring Fair can be found in the newsletter. Bunnings @ Narellan Sausage Sizzle Event – 14 September 2013 from 8.30am We are looking for volunteers to work on a roster basis to either cook or serve.
