TRAINING IN INDONESIA

RIGGER STAGE 3 SUCCESS

GOLF DAY

AND MORE!

The refurbishment of LEEA’s premises in Osprey Court, Huntingdon is approaching on-schedule completion.

As reported in the last edition of The Lifting Engineer, the LEEA administration and executive team have moved from the building to new offices in Ramsay Court, also in Hinchingbrooke Business Park. The site at Osprey Court is undergoing a full-scale refit to turn it into a training centre to provide students with world-class facilities to fulfill LEEA certificates and diploma courses.

John Williams, operations manager, LEEA, said: “The aim is to convert the two units into a dedicated training centre. Currently there are two classrooms fully operational with new break facilities in both units. One of the classrooms can be divided into two independent rooms giving LEEA the capacity to run three separate courses.”

The LEEA CRM

system that we use to manage the business and hold member records has reached the point where we have to upgrade to the latest

version. It was opportune to review and improve its functions and to add new facilities, which should offer better services to members, including a dedicated member portal allowing easier booking of courses, purchasing of publications and other new features. Work will start in the next month or so and we’ll roll out the new features as they become available.

I am pleased to welcome Robert Wilson to the LEEA team as Regional Manager Americas. With over 30 years of industry experience Robert is a valuable addition to our staff. Denis Hogan, who was previously responsible for this region, becomes Quality and Technical Support Manager where, in addition to his technical work, he will play a key role in developing the team of Technical Officers, Regional and Country Managers.

We have just completed a successful exhibition in Bahrain at the National Occupational Safety and Health Conference held by the Bahraini Ministry of Labour. We were happy to be there supporting three other LEEA members who were also exhibiting and made a number of new contacts while raising awareness of LEEA among visitors.

The Bahrain exhibition was followed immediately by Australian members meetings in both Perth and Brisbane, which were well attended and there was great participation from those who attended. Some objectives have been identified in

the region and Mike Williamson will be following these through.

Hot on the heels of these meetings, Kevin Crilly manned our stand at EIC Connect in Abu Dhabi and next week he and I will be visiting Saudi Arabia while other members of the team will man a stand at Breakbulk in Antwerp. Our next UK Roadshow will be in Telford on 7th June and shortly afterwards we will be at Vertikal Days at Haydock Park. This is all part of our strategy to raise awareness of LEEA and its members with equipment end users. The process is having an effect as we are seeing more applications for membership where the motive is “my client has told me to join LEEA”.

All of this means that membership and the LEEA logo has more value and we are seeing many more attempts to forge LEEA certificates and diplomas. One LEEA member has been suspended for presenting false documents to a client

and we are investigating more incidences both from members and non- members. Subject to approval at the AGM any members found doing this will be permanently exclud-ed from membership.

The association has also taken legal action against an Indian organisation styling itself the Lifting Equipment Engineers

Academy, using the LEEA logo and listing our courses. This has now been discontinued and we have written undertakings that there will be no repetition.

We will take firm action to defend LEEA Intellectual Property and trademark rights in order to maintain the value of the brand for members. But we can only do this if members make us aware of infringements, which can easily be done by emailing the office or using the contact form on the website.

John Williams continued: “The next phase of the project will include the

completion of another new classroom, thus, raising the capacity for learning without impacting on the overall student experience.”

Williams added that the network bandwidth of LEEA’s dedicated internet line was doubled last month (May) to support the new learning management system and said the increase will bring a better learning environment to Osprey Court.

LEEA is also in the process of developing the capacity for global video-conferencing from the bespoke boardroom in Osprey Court. This will lend itself to a range of new activities emanating from the site and should go live this month (June).

Members are advised to check they have the association’s new postal address at 3 Ramsay Court, Hinchingbrooke Business Park, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, PE29 6FY, UK.

“The Lifting Engineer is designed to give members an update on industry activities, LEEA activities and areas that would be of technical interest to the membership. Whilst we are happy to identify new innovations and technical advances within the industry, we do not see it as a platform for sales promotion or marketing of product launches. Send stories for consideration to [email protected].” — LEEA

LEEA recently held a three-week-long combined members training event hosted

by Indonesia-based PT Rigspek Perkasa at its 15,000 square-metre headquarters on the island of Batam.

The event presented an opportunity for member companies in the region to develop and raise their engineers’ knowledge surrounding various types of lifting equipment, while LEEA provided them with information and skills that can be applied to their various lifting activities.

Rigspek Perkasa was established in January 2007 and is part of Carl Stahl Group’s global network of lifting equipment companies. Headquarters includes 4,000 square metres of warehouse space in addition to offices, training facilities and load testing areas. It also has facilities in Jakarta and Balikpapan.

Dave Tucker, LEEA training officer, said: “The facilities provided by PT Rigspek Perkasa were of the highest standard, giving students the opportunity to concentrate fully on the training delivered. Practical sessions on various equipment in varied states of disrepair provided participants with the opportunity to put theory into practice. Students developed confidence in making informed and accurate decisions based on the serviceability of the equipment they were inspecting.”

The event was conducted over a three-week period allowing for a wide range of training to be delivered including the Part One Entrance Certificate, Lifting Equipment General and Lifting Machines Manual Diplomas and two Mobile Crane Examination Diplomas.

Tucker concluded: “The courses were very well received by over 50 delegates, who engaged throughout all training periods showing a clear desire and willingness to develop their individual knowledge and understanding.”

Alexander Silalahi, business development manager, Rigspek recently reported that the government has confirmed plans to invest US$360 billion into a series of projects over the next five years, primarily in the infrastructure and power sectors.

A s this issue of The Lifting Engineer was going to press, LEEA was making its debut at the Breakbulk Europe

trade show in Antwerp, the largest exhibition and educational forum in the world addressing the needs of traditional breakbulk and project cargo logistics professionals.

The event presented LEEA with an opportunity to network and connect with over 350 fellow exhibitors and sponsors that provide specialised services. Breakbulk Europe attendees included LEEA members, specialised ocean carriers, freight forwarders, ports / terminals professionals, logistics providers, ground transportation experts, export packers, equipment companies and more.

John Williams, operations manager, LEEA, said from Stand 519H3: “Expectations are for an excellent foot-fall through Breakbulk Europe with a reported 8,500 delegates registered. This being new territory for LEEA, our interest is in testing the waters as most activities throughout will involve lifting operations.”

Williams represented LEEA with events manager Emma Foreman. Certex and Checkmate were among early visitors to the LEEA exhibit.
