Pres. Mohan, DG Srinivasan, AG Yadav, First lady Rita of RCM, First lady of District 3232, Dr.Sujatha, dignitaries all.

We in the RCM, celebrate the 89th year of our Charter and it is time to look back on all the 88 years, it’s Presidents, before Mohan, their boards and each and every Rotarian, who has travelled in this vehicle called the RCM. This reminiscence has to be combined with a lot of pride, considering that the RCM stands as a colossus, in the firmament of Rotary in particular and amongst all NGO’s of Chennai, in general.

It is that time, when all of us current members, can justifiably be proud of being members of this institution called the RCM.

Now, why do I say this? It is definitely not with any conceit, but, on the contrary, with a lot of humility.

Let me explain. On May 10, 1929, our club was formally inaugurated in this very city, and in the very hotel that we have met for over 77 of the 89 years of our existence and that is, the Connemara Hotel. We were officially chartered on July 19, 1929 as the fifth club in the whole of India, after RC of Calcutta,

which was chartered in 1920, Lahore in 1927, and Bombay, Delhi, Madras and Colombo, in that order, in the year 1929, but all within a gap of a few months from one another. That the Delhi club became defunct in 1931, in now folklore and Lahore having acceded to Pakistan after partition, our position in the Indian Rotary Scenario, was catapulted to the 3rd. oldest club in the country, from the 5th position.

This automatically made us the oldest club in Southern India and Sri Lanka. For the next 31 years, we were the only club in the City of Madras, although we started the RC of Bangalore in the year 1934 and they sponsored the RC of Vellore in the year 1948 closer home.

We were also one of the very few clubs, in fact 3 clubs in India, that did not have a sponsor club, but was started, by the Marco Polo of Rotary as he was called, Rtn.James Wheeler Davidson of the RC of Calgary in Canada, who was appointed as one of the Commissioners of Extension and was also VP of RI, who was the one who was instrumental in forming our club along with Bombay and Delhi. So, in a way, we were self

manifested or Swayambu as they say in Sanskrit and Tamil.

Our first members were 30 lively fellows, chosen carefully from different vocations by Jim Davidson and another Sir, Frederick James, who was a Past President of the RC of Calcutta, but who luckily relocated to Madras, just at a time when Jim was on his trip of Austral-Asia, forming Rotary clubs. While I will talk to you of Sir Frederick E. James a little later in detail, let me get back to the 30 charter members of our club, who were all white, of which 27 were British, 2 Swiss and one American. It was not as though Indians were not chosen, in fact they were, but could not be present on the day of the inaugural and hence they did not form a part of the final list of Charter members, that Jim Davidson sent to RI, under his own signature. A copy of this original application is in our possession, when I picked it up on my first visit to the Archives section of RI in Evanston in the year 2010. Indian members joined shortly thereafter, but alas, were not meant to be Charter members of the RCM. Rajah Sir. M.A. Muthiah Chettiar was the first Indian Member to join in the year 1929 itself, while Sir. Mohd. Usman was the first Indian President of our club in the year 1935-36.

Now, a quick look at Sir Frederick E. James, who although was not a past president of our club, having been a president of RCC prior to his relocation, was, as a member of the RCM, the first RI Director from the whole of India, in the year 1933/34 and then went on to become the First District Governor, for 2 terms in the years 1937/38 and 1938/39, consecutively. He was also the VP of the United Planters Association of South India(UPASI). All these facts are recorded in the annals of RI and have been picked up from there and this is for the sceptics amongst us.

Hence, the honor of giving the First RI Director and Governor goes to our club

entirely. Also, for those with an eye for detail,

we are the only club, along with our first daughter club RC Bangalore to have been a part of the following districts viz:

RID 89 between 1929 and 37/38,RID 91 from 37/38.RID 94 the exact years of which are not

very clear.RID 56 from 1949/50,RID 320 from 57/58 to 83/84,RID 323 from 1984,RID 3230 from 1993,And finally now, RID 3232 from July 1

2017.Another Trivia, was that second DG

from our Club, Dr.P.Rama Rau, was the first to visit the RI Headquarters in Evanston, which was on Wacker Drive then, unlike its present location on Sherman Drive and had met Paul Harris, our Founder and Chez Perry, the first General Secretary of RI for many years there. Legend has it that Paul Harris had given him a Gavel, made of Ivory, which was presented in turn to the RC of Bangalore during their inauguration and which they have even today. This visit of his was in 1938 and the Rotarian Magazine of that year had carried a 4 page Photo Feature, a copy of which is in our possession.

When World war Two broke out, our club raised money for the Government War Fund and in October 1940, donated a Princely sum of Rs.41,000/- in those days to Sir, Arthur Hope, the then Governor of Madras Presidency.

The Mid Day Meal Scheme was started by our club as far back as 1971, much ahead of when the Government of Tamilnadu did.

The First Community based Rotaract club in the World was formed by us in the year 1968, under the name and style of the Rotaract Club of Madras.

RI has decorated 6 of our members with the “Service Above Self “ award, which is one of the highest awards given to individual Rotarians.

We have only two third generation members amongst us today, which is surprising, given the age of our club and they are Rtn. Pratap Kumar and Rtn. Dr. Anisha Ashok.

Women in Rotary:While all of us know that Women

were admitted into Rotary officially only in 1988/89, our club had the distinction of proposing that women

be admitted, as far back as 1937, when we moved a resolution in the First ever Dist. Conference, held under our own DG. F.E.James. What happened to that resolution is not known, obviously, it didn’t go through, but the fact remains that RCM was progressive in its thinking even as far back as in early 30’s of the 20th century. The first lady Rotarian to join our club was in the same year of 1989, when women were approved to be admitted into Rotary.

Our club has had the good fortune of having the stalwarts of different industries and vocations, be a part of the membership. We have had the Head Honchos of many a famous industry like the TVS Group, Amalgamations, the Coromandel Group, the Tata group, the Kothari Group, the Sanmar and India Cements Group many IT and ITES firms, Leading Doctors, Lawyers, Chartered Accountants, Banks, Hotel chains, Diplomats, World famous Film houses like AVM, Satya Jyothi, Sivaji Films, Renowned Artists in the music field, bureaucrats, Politicians and you name it, they have and are members of our club.

The strong foundation laid by all our Past Presidents and Members, has stood the club in Good stead, in that when we as RCM approach a donor, with a purposeful and relevant project, funds are generally forthcoming in abundance to see us complete the projects well, and on time.

This is reason why we as a club have been successful in completing community service projects in excess of Rs.2 Crores every year in the last 15 years, with the largest being our Tsunami project, that saw us complete a project worth 6.5 Crores in 18 months from start to finish, without even a single dollar from the TRF.

The Rotary Nagar Slum, behind Queen Mary’s College, was adopted by our club, as far back as 1943-44, contrary to what many of us thought was 1947. Even today we are engaged with them purposefully, by involving them in relevant activities according to the times we live in.

• The Child Trust Hospital was started by the RCM in 1980. Founded by Late Rtn. Dr. PDG. Ken Hobbs, a Rotarian from Whitby, Canada, with Rtn. PP. Krish Chitale .

We have also had projects like the Schools into Smiles, the handiwork of Governor Benjamin, under which 100 dilapidated govt. schools were

completely refurbished. Your club did 16 of those 100 + schools, at a cost of over Rs. 90 lakhs, then.

We have had a ruling Chief Minister as an Hony. Member of our club, in the Legendary MGR. There is an interesting story of him being invited as Chief Guest to one of our meetings, much to the chagrin of our then members, who were genuinely worried about time. To everyone’s surprise, MGR walked in 15 minutes earlier and when asked, said, “I know you Rotarians are sticklers for time and hence I made sure I left home well ahead, to beat the Traffic if any.

Another interesting happening, was when PDG. Dr. MN was the president and they had invited the then Health Minister of TN, Dr. H.V. Hande, who is the father of our own Rotarian Dr. Krishna Hande. Legend has it, that just a little before the meeting was to start, Dr.MN got a call from Dr. Hande, saying that he is stuck in a meeting and hence will be late, to which Dr. MN said, you can come anytime before 2.30 pm and join us, while our meeting will be underway. Likewise, Dr. Hande arrived 10 mts to the closure time and was given his rightful place on the dais. He was then told, that he has only 10 mts to say what he has to say and Dr. Hande agreed and obliged. Now why I am mentioning these two incidents is to remind ourselves and others that the RCM has always been sticklers for time and we continue to be so. When Legends like Dr. MGR and Dr. Hande can fall in line, who are we, mere mortals to complain.

During Governor JB’s year, the district had the distinction of achieving the hitherto unachieved and that is the collection of half a million dollars, to the TRF. That was the starting point of motivating future Governors to aim bigger and today they easily exceed a million dollars, without breaking a sweat. JB himself, was the first amongst Rotarians from the South of India, to have become the AKS member, by contributing in excess of US$.250,000/-, which both he and Marlene have done.

Today we have 3 more AKS members from our own district and their photos on crystals adorn the Hall of Donors on the 16th floor of the RI Headquarters, in Evanston IL. USA.

Our club, is also perhaps one of the very first, if not the first itself to have become completely Tax compliant and this again talks highly of the commitment of our

Page 5: The Lighthouse - rotarymadras.inrotarymadras.in/.../07/Lighthouse-July-19-2017.pdf · DIRECToR SERVICE PRoJECT 1 Rtn. Balaji Chinni ... Lahore in 1927, and Bombay, Delhi, ... we moved

members and the value they attach to the statutory rules. We are also perhaps the first club to have had the FCRA approval to maintain 2 accounts as we do until today.

I know for sure that we are the first club indeed to have published a full fledged and a comprehensive History Book, titled, a “Timeless Legacy “ and a PDF version of this also on line on the website of the RGHF, who are the official history keepers of RI.

Our youngest Past President and this record stands even today was Rtn. George Cherian, who started the ambitious Create Project, that saw the building of Infrastructure on our own land in Gummidipoondi, that house the boys there. The funding for this in excess of Rs.1.5 Crores, was from only three of our own Rotarians, Viz. PDG.Benji, Aaditya Agarwal and B.K.Rao. In Selaiyur too, our Past President Ravi Katari, donated a handsome amount to complete the construction of the second floor building.

The honor of being our First Lady President goes to Rtn. Indra Subramayam, thereafter we have had Nandita Krishnan, both of them having done a great job of it, while adding colour to the post and very soon we will have our Third Lady President in Dr. Vijayabharati Rangarajan. We are sure that Dr. Vijaya, will excel them in every way possible.

We have not always been beneficiaries only, but have been benefactors too for projects abroad, in Bangladesh, Ghana and even the USA.

On the youth front, we have a whopping 23 Interact Clubs under our fold and 9 Rotaract clubs, all busy and active. My only grouse here is that we haven’t yet seen them as potential members of our club and I hope this happens too asap.

We have honored ourselves, by honoring many a stalwart with Awards from our Club and this list comprises of the Who is Who of Chennai.

Recently, we have now embarked upon a mammoth project of Building a school for the Flood Displaced people, who have been relocated to a particular area and this project is expected to run into an excess of Rs. 6 crores, of which we have a major sum already, in our kitty.

Leadership is another aspect of RCM that stands out. We have had 87 different presidents in the last 88 years, with Rtn. Mohan being the 89. This means that in all our years of existence, we have had

only one member repeat as President for 2 years, in the formative years of our club in 1931-32 and 32-33, when Major WSE. Money, OBE, was President in those 2 consecutive years. Besides that, we have had a new person a year at the helm. This is what Rotary is all about, isn’t it?

Thus, all of us past presidents have done our wee bit and then passed on the mantle, without showing any signs of ownership, of the club and post, which is, as we all know, the starting point of decay of any organization. Our club has more than amply proved that the institution is far greater than any individual, however great a person might be, individually.

We are one of the few clubs that have built not only a corpus of funds that is never touched, but have also built assets in the form of 35 plus acres of land, replete with buildings around the city of Chennai, which only very few clubs have been able to accomplish. We have contributed in excess of US$. 1.3 million to the TRF, while we have received in excess of US$.4.million as funding for our projects.

We have produced 18 Governors on our own, not taking into account a few Past Governors, who have joined our club, over the years and thus, every other club has long way to go to even catch up with us.

Many of our projects are, simply put, Iconic, be it the Polio eradication Project which we have pioneered from the very beginning, the Boys town, The Ghana Eye care project, The Tsunami Project, The Create Project, The sanitation Project, and more recently The Rotary Flame Project, which have been the brain child of our Visionary Past President S.N.Srikanth.

Our fund raisers have also attained an exalted status and are programmes of reckoning, like the Dandiya night, golf Tourney, Art Auction and many more. Above all this, what a delightful set of 248 + 5 Rotarians, who are all so forthcoming and generous to a fault.

That our members, however efficient and capable, are being shunned and resisted to take over the mantle of District Governor, in the last decade or so, I think, is definitely not our clubs loss.

It all been reduced to a numbers game. Therefore, dear ones of the RCM, this

is, in short, your club, and we are the Best. I say this unabashedly, for we are that. While saying this, I am not in any

way trying to deride or belittle any other club. I as past District officer know that every club in this district does great projects, which are unique on their own.

Despite this, RCM is what RCM is and hence please take pride in belonging to this Great Institution. Retake a pledge of being more involved in the activities of the club, in any which way you can and want and this I am addressing to the few fence sitters amongst us. Get involved and let me assure you that you will only come out the better from it.

This, in a gist, is your Rotary Club of Madras and I hope that I have been able to reset and rekindle your love toward the club, in that it motivates you to contribute a little more than you already are.

Before I sign off, I would like to remind ourselves that we are only less than 11 years to our Centennial year and it is now that we start to put together a high powered committee, to start the planning an event, that should be one of its kind.

I therefore urge Pres. Mohan to form a committee and set the ball rolling, for before we know it, we will be there. For this event, we must target to get the Prime Minister of India, whoever it is then, as the Chief Guest. Not only this, it should be a year long celebration and a Blitz Krieg of media ads. For all this we must aim a fund of at least 2 crores as a minimum and then build on it. At the end of the Centennial Year, we must aim to leave behind a corpus of a like amount, if not more.

Fellows of the RCM, lets now look ahead to greater things and march on toward achieving that. Let us continue to lead the Rotary World, as we have all these years and more. Some of us will not be around, when the Centenary Celebrations take place, but many of you will and I am more than confident that RCM is in safe hands to witness a paradigm shift upward, in its activities that benefit the community at large.

Your club, the RCM has been a strong and Bright Beacon of Light, under which Rotary has not only thrived, but has come to be considered as a major NGO of repute. Also, the common thread that binds us since our inception in 1929, up until now, is the fact that we have always been Alive and sensitive to the happenings around us and have responded to those with alacrity. Let us continue to be and do that.

Best wishes and thanks,

Sowcarpet Food Walk

Time for some cricket...

Just the words sent my salivary glands into overdrive! When Archana suggested this on our

Sparklers group I couldn’t wait for it to happen.

One fine Thursday afternoon we decided on where to meet and head out to where Rtn. Suresh Kumar and Nanda were waiting for us… in his office in the heart of this old town.

Originally part of George Town during the British era, Sowcarpet is a small town on its own with vintage buildings and narrow streets. The place bustles with business activity seven days a week and there is hardly anything one cannot buy here. This area has a sizeable Marwari and Gujarati population who have made it their homein a South Indian dominated city. Owing to the population, we can indulge in both south Indian and Marwari/ Gujarati food. The USP of this area is that one can have their fill of food without burning a hole in the pocket!

So we ladies got into 3 auto rickshaws, which were kept for our exclusive use, and headed off to our very first stop.

Mehta brothers for the VadaPav!This hole-in-the-wall eatery is famous for its vada pav. A 50-year-old spot, it’s one of the oldest eateries here and is easily recognisable by the crowd milling around it each evening. They make two things – vada pav and mirchibhaji. They can also make it without onion and garlic which

is not usually found! They even have a mayonnaise one. But the right way to eat this is with a harimirchi... a bright green chilly.

From there we walked it to Agarwal Bhavan where the samosas with the green chutney and Lassi with malai was just finger licking good!!

On our way out I have to say we got very distracted by the quality of the fruits we saw on the road. Dragon fruit, kiwi fruit , sapotas, fresh litchis, apricots and figs, huge imampasand and banganapalli mangoes!!

Of course that meant all of us just had to

buy ….. so it was a good thing we had the auto rickshaws and a man Friday along with us! As we all know…time flies when we are having fun and shopping and by then it was getting dark. So our next stop was for panipuri and masala pooris. This was really a roadside stall with a crowd outside justifying the quality of the food.

By now it was getting late so a few ladies had to leave and I have to say they missed the stops that followed.

There are plenty of Ganesh cool bars around Mint Street and all of them seem to serve Sugarcane juice. What’s special about this one is- they serve Masala Sugarcane and that too for a price of Rs. 10/-.

A brief stop at Kakada Ramprasad for hot jalebes and parcels for home and on we went to Maya chats for their world famous in Madras chaat. Their pyaazkikatchori drowning in their special green chutney is literally to die for! Even though we all felt as stuffed as the kulchas there we couldn’t resist eating more.

That sort of finished the day for us. I know we barely scratched the surface of all the various food and drink available in that heritage area.

Which is why we have decided to do a whole day of shopping and eating once the weather is a bit cooler.

Thanks to Archana Nanda and Suresh for making this happen.

Please be informed that the T20 tournament which is the first

fundraiser being planned for this Rotary year which I am hopeful will become an annual feature and a major source of funds for our projects. While I do admit that we are again relying on us Rotarians to support this venture, I wish to let you know that we are trying our best efforts to garner outside donors and also cover the costs of the tournament through the entry fees.

The emailed appeal to sponsors may be forwarded to any friends

or prospective sponsors. We have several Rotarians who have already come forward to support the event with one banner for Rs.12,000 or two for Rs.20,000 and request more of you to come forward with helping us in this fundraising event which will we played over ten weekends from Aug 5th onwards.

Thanks in advance and look forward to your support both in identifying teams and donors.
