Chairman’s Report

Once again I am lost to know where to start, we must be one of the busiest clubs known to man ! I guess our biggest event has to be the club race which took on a new identity in the shape of The Harting 10 Trail Race. Tom once again pulled off a masterpiece in organisation and planning to put together a vast army of volunteers ,who were all in the right place at the right time and created a winning formula. Before the event Tom and the committee felt that as this was the first running of this race we could not expect vast numbers of runners to turn up or for the event to make a good profit . How wrong can you be !! They did come …. Many of them….. and the event took on a life of its own, like a tsunami gathering strength, it grew. I was overwhelmed by the massive support which came from so many Liss Runners and their families. All pulling together for the good of the club. A massive thank you to Tom and everyone involved. Please forgive me for not mentioning all the individuals that played a part, there were so many but I can truly assure you that no one went unnoticed and every person played an essensual roll. THANK YOU. Thanks too to everyone who made or donated cakes . They were a great success and helped towards the profits on the day . The south Downs Relay seems like a life time ago now but is always worthy of a mention. Two storming teams flew the flag for Liss Runners and gave a proud performance. Once again it was “nail biting” stuff before the event and Helen P deserves a medal for keeping a cool persona . She is either really very “unflappable” or the best actor this side of the West End and should be on the stage ! After many changes to both teams , all went well and once again the event was a great success for Liss Runners. Very sadly the pub runs are over for another year. Tom, Tim, Lesley , Jes and David R designed breathtaking routes for us all to enjoy. Each run was well supported and the fondness for these events just continues to grow with the club. Such a great way to spend a Monday evening . Roll on next summer , when we can do it all again. Thank you folks!! At one of the pub runs we took the opportunity to make a special presentation to Tim for all his years of commitment to the club. You should have seen the look on his face… Priceless.. Thanks Tim xx

There has been a slight change to our Wednesday night training sessions. Due to injury Helen M has gracefully resigned as a trainer and Lesley E has stepped in to fill the gap. Thank you ladies . Also ladies you will now find a new design to our running vests. Thanks to research done by Rose we now have a more “ running friendly” vest . So if you would like to update your kit , they are now on sale…. Give me a shout. Well the Handicap series is almost done , just one more battle in September. With everything to play for , keep up the effort and remember .. it’s not over till the fat lady sings ! Dave Auger has done an amazing job with the handicap positions, Tom has kept us en route and Derek and Ann have kept our times . What a team! Thank you. Well done to all the winners so far. Marie, Rose and Bill Peters . Cracking running!!! [ The Handicap Results for the season are included on page 15 ] I really wanted to mention a few individual achievers over the last few months… I kept a list of all the outstanding events which our members were involved in. Truly truly tough endurance races, mind blowing long swimming events . Muscle bursting climbs . The list grew and grew . With every new entry came the realisation that everyone had achieved in their own way. From 10k to ultra marathons everyone was a winner. Goodness folks the club is full of inspiring people. I hope there are a few reports further in to back up my theory. Talking of inspiring people, Bob and Jenny Broadlhead are two such people and are also founder members of Liss Runners. We have an awful lot to thank them for and as a small gesture we invited them to be free life members of Liss Runners . They are very special to the club and I hope they are as proud of their creation today as they were many years ago. Our love and best wishes to them always. Well folks I hope I haven’t missed anything. Its been a good few months and now we have the cross country season to look forward to. Stay safe out there. Happy running.

Helen Smith

Harting Trail 10 Race Report

Last year it was decided to think about a new race as there were various problems with the Milland Valley Trail race – the incredible length of time to mark the course up, the multitude of marshals needed and the worries on future tampering of route signs. A great venue was needed for a race H.Q. with adequate parking and space for loos. Then a route needed to be decided on with suitable paths and some nice countryside to entice runners. The area to the East of Liphook was looked at but this was not really suitable. Looking further afield South Harting looked an option with the H.Q. on the sports field and a lovely downland route around the Compton and Ditcham areas. A route was decided on coming out to around 10 miles, with mostly nice wide tracks and lanes. Permission was given to use the Sports Field and Pavilion. Then the hard work started!

View towards Windmill Hill, Chalton in the winter!

Entries were slow in coming in with Tim and Val working very hard to process each entry and send out the race instructions and numbers; much appreciated, I know how long this can take. A week before the race four of us went round a few overgrown paths clearing a way through. Thanks Derek, Stuart and Peter for all the hard work! The afternoon and evening before race day, the majority of the route signs were put up - taking half the time to mark up the Milland course! Then it was off to bed, praying for nice

6

weather in the morning with no one messing about with the signs. In the morning, it was early up to get to South Harting to set up the road signs and parking markers. It was a lovely morning, high cloud, warm but not hot, perfect! Will and Stewart did an excellent job getting everybody parked. Then we had a large influx of people wanting to enter on the day. No problems with the great Tim and Val team! In the end we had a total of 248 entries. This should give a profit of well over £1,000. It was then a quick shoot up to the start to carry out the race brief and get going on the bike to ensure the signs were not interfered with. It was many thanks to Sarah Matthews for being the official starter. I was working hard keeping in front of a very fast Julian Manning. I only had a few seconds at marshal points and water stations to say hello before Julian came into sight. In the end no signs had been moved. There was a clear winner in Denmead Strider Julian Manning. He formed a lead after the first hill and maintained this to finish well under the hour in 58’ 29”. Almost in sight was 2nd placed Hugh Aggleton from Cardiff finishing just over a minute behind. Victory A.C. runner Daniel Bailey took 3rd.

For the ladies there was a great run by Chichester Runner Fay Cripps to take 1st lady, 1st veteran lady and 23rd overall in 1h 10’ 40”. She was closely followed by Lucy Zirbser of Sandhurst Joggers with Jo Hesketh a further 2 minutes back. Senior ladies 2nd and 3rd places were taken by Jennifer Bradley and Melissa Panter.

7

For the veteran men Tony Randall came first with Chris Chambers in 2nd and Mark Eaton in 3rd. Super veteran category was won by Tony Conway with Phil Guest second. After Cripps 2nd and 3rd veteran ladies winners were Hesketh and Donna Reid. Joanna Curtis and Marion Wicks took 1st and 2nd in the ladies super veteran category. Full results (done in record time by Tim and Val) and photographs for the runners are on the club website.

The race was a great success with 227 finishers. Nic and Annette were kept very busy giving out medals as were Peter and Alan giving out water to every finisher. There were so many positive comments from finishing runners with many praising the friendliness of the marshals. On the Runners World website there are even more good comments and a fantastic rating of 94%. Not many races get this high a rating especially for the first time. The only negative incident we had was the tightly packed runners coming across horses being lead from field to field across the bridleway around the half mile in point. The horses began to panic but thankfully did not cause any injuries or damage. The lady with them then ranted at Julie and Bill at the nearest marshal point and at Derek at the race H.Q. Sorry! I think I have this sorted for next year. I had a chat with her a few days after the event. She had calmed down and was in fact quite pleasant to talk to. Many thanks goes to all the helpers and marshals: Andy Cole, Bill and Julie, Andy P, Alan, Peter, Lorna, Emma, Andrew James, James White, David Robbins, Mike Dadd, Ann Carty, Ann Parnell, David Little, Sarah and Mark Watson, Bob and Jenny, Malcolm and Sue, Paul Davies, Mellisa, Sarah Wade, Norman and Rose, Nic Stacey and Annett Paton. A special thanks goes to these in the “kitchen”: Helen Smith, Lesley and Ann Parnell. There were run off their feet dishing out countless cakes and drinks. Many of the forum comments mentioned the delicious homemade cakes. They also raised in excess of £200; thanks to those who supplied cakes.

Sorry if I’ve missed anybody out. Now… next year the same!? Tom

IOW very very hilly Half Marathon , A Group of 7 of us hopped on the Fastkat to the island and spent a lovely morning racing over the toughest "on road" half marathon I have ever known. There was no rest from the hills , but the race was friendly , well organised and with some beautiful views. We settled into positions after a mile or two and Derek and I tried to kill each other as we kept up the tempo of the run. We expected to slow at some point but the gods were smiling on us that day and we were able to run our fastest "half" for years. Derek was great company as always .13 members of my family ( some who live on the island) were at the finish line to cheer us in. To top off a cracking event , we all stayed and had a picnic together in the sunshine (runners and family) . A real bonus for me to see my folks and delighted we all shared the day.

Thanks guys... same time next year !!! Helen

Queen Elizabeth Park Run

QE Park Run was started on May 18, and I can’t believe that we are up to run number 15

this weekend (August 24). It has started small but is growing every week.

Park run is a 5km route that starts at 9am every Saturday morning, at various venues

around the area, and all are completely free. That means that you’re not up at the crack

of dawn to take part, and you finish early enough that it doesn’t take over the day

The only real requirement to be completed before you take part is to register with Park

Run, via their web-site, and print off your bar code (a unique athlete number). Then

when you finish the run your time and position can be recorded. This information is used

by the runner to chart their progress and by Park Run who reward runners with free T-

shirts when children reach their 10th or adults reach their 50th run, and then for anyone

reaching 100th and then 250th runs. Also once you’re registered you can run any Park

Run in the country and become a ‘Park Run Tourist’. You’ll be surprised at how many

people complete a Park Run whilst on holiday or visiting relatives

Many people may think this is a new thing but did you know that Paul Sinton-Hewitt

founded Park Run back in 2004. The idea started as a weekly time trial, and then

evolved into Park Run, and has now gone global with events taking place in UK, Denmark,

Australia, South Africa, Poland, New Zealand, the United States and Ireland.

Park Run is a non profit making organisation and is run entirely by volunteers – yes that’s

right - no one gets paid!! Park Run is however sponsored by Adidas, Sweatshop, Lucozade

Sport, London marathon, Pruhealth, and aql. (OK sorry that the legal bit done, you have

to mention them all). In this way park run can provide a monthly prize, a weekly e-mail

regarding all the news from around the country, those milestone T-shirts, and after

your weekly run an e-mail or text messages regarding your personnel achievement for

the day

Park run is set up as a run not a race, it is you against the clock, and is open to all ages,

and abilities, and its not just for beginners, many club runners take part too. Although

all children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult or guardian at all times to ensure

their safety. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a short lead and under firm control.

Of course Park Runs are always after volunteers, I personally volunteer to give

something back to the sport, and I find it great fun. As you can see from the picture

you get a lovely Park Run high-vis vest to wear and full training is always given for all the

roles. I still haven’t done them all !!!

I have run at four different venues and have found them all welcoming, with the same

set up, of being set in the local park, have a great café for after run refreshment, and

they all have there own unique qualities, and there is usually cake! For Queen Elizabeth

14

you pay for a one-hour ticket, place the ticket with a spare bar code on your dash and

you are covered until 11am. All the courses are unique, some are flat, some undulating,

Queen Elizabeth has Heartbreak Hill but all are achievable whatever your level.

So if you fancy a run any Saturday morning come along and maybe I’ll see you there
