The South Shore Restaurant Scene: Pop’s Seafood Shack & Grill

A unique, casual ambiance, outstanding food and service, and great entertainment are the trademarks of accomplished restaurateur and entrepreneur George Voutsinas, Jr. in creating this waterfront restaurant, bar & grill. Pop’s, named after his father, from whom he learned all aspects of the hospitality business, is designed with a vacation-like vibe in mind, creating a tropical oasis right here on the south shore of Long Island. Framed by live palm trees and more than 200 feet of private beach, “Pop’s South Beach,” as it is fondly known - affords guests a rare and luxurious seating option of dining right on the sand. By day, boaters and families have the option to catch some rays while having lunch at this casual beachfront restaurant.

By night, it transforms into a prime spot to enjoy dining, cocktails and dancing with friends while featuring nightly entertainment, food and drink specials. All of this can be enjoyed at their indoor dining room, under the covered outdoor deck or at Pop’s Fire Pit Lounge, also located on the beach.

For those who prefer to Dock & Dine, “Pop’s Marina” - located adjacent to Apache Yacht Club, also owned by Voutsinas - allows boaters to pull into one of 40 deep-water slips and either dine at the restaurant or be served aboard their vessel!

At Pop’s Seafood Shack and Grill, you don’t have to trade enjoying high quality food for the great ambiance. They have an extensive menu to please all, with a focus on fresh seafood specialties, a raw bar and traditional American favorites.

There is something for everyone to enjoy this summer at Pop’s, from Sandbox Sundays, featuring live reggae and calypso bands, to Ladies Night every Thursday - and don’t forget Happy Hour every Friday, featuring an extensive cocktail list, refreshing frozen drinks, imported and domestic beers, wines and homemade Sangria.

Letter From The PublisherSpring is here, and with it the promise of new beginnings, new projects, fresh starts...

The season ahead is filled with many milestone celebrations, and of course Mother’s Day. Included within the pages of this Issue are several hand-selected gift boutiques you will love. Make a point to check them out and browse for wonderful personal accessories, home accents and gifts. I am proud to be able to share information acknowledging those who help others and give back. Two great organizations worth a special mention are: Revive Fire Island - founded to promote the economic welfare of Fire Island - and the LI Hospitality Ball, which will showcase offerings from the region’s top restaurants on June 3rd at their Annual Gala to raise money for the American Cancer Society. A new feature we are introducing in this issue is “Health Matters,” a section which will evolve to contain a collaboration of informative editorial and insights from professionals, designed to help us with our health. As you may already know, we always love networking and sharing great finds with you in each of our issues. Now we are inviting those who feel they would like to become our “Fashionable Friends” to offer their input to The List. If you are out and about and find something so great that you think we should include it, let us know. We will check them out and possibly get them a mention in a future issue of The List on our new GSB Social Page. And of course, we will credit you for a job well done! Always remember, each new season is a fresh start to something wonderful.

We all know what happened on October

29th 2012, when Superstorm Sandy came

ashore. We all have stories. Fire Island did

its job as a barrier to the rest of Long Island

and took a fair share of attention from the

storm. Regardless, as coastal residents

know, life moves on.

So we look forward. Memorial Day is fast

approaching and we are happily working

to prepare for the summer. Restaurants,

shops and stores are open. The beach, sun

and water are waiting.

So come. Plan your vacation. Your day trips.

Your summer. Meet your friends. Swim

in the ocean. Soak up the sun. Eat. Drink.

Be happy. Revive yourself. We’re looking

forward to it.

Third Annual Long Island Hospitality Ball Brings Industry TogetherThe 2013 Long Island Hospitality Ball, benefiting the American Cancer Society, will be held on Monday, June 3rd, at the Crest Hollow Country Club.

The event will showcase offerings from the regions’ top restaurants and food vendors from New Hyde Park to the Hamptons, each serving signature dishes to guests. Entertainment highlights the evening, with featured acts from well-known DJs to live bands. Featured nightclubs and bars, as well as wine and spirit sponsors, complete the event. Tickets are $100 per person and include event entry, parking, entertainment and unlimited food and drink. Tickets may be purchased at longislandhospitalityball.org. Tickets are $150 at the door.

The gala, created and organized by Keith Hart, a hospitality industry mainstay and cancer survivor, continues the spirit of generosity by honoring three industry peers in 2013 for their achievements, including E. Lloyd Sobel, CEO and Pres-ident of Empire Merchants, who, along with his professional accomplishments, supports many charities that help families, youth, elderly and the hungry, as well as those who research and educate on can-cer and arthritis; Reynold Leone, owner of Zacharys and Aura nightclubs; as well as Anthony Scotto and Victor Scotto, pioneers in the hospitality industry, set the standard for quality and service.

Page 12: The List April/May Spring 2013

Come spring, shoppers often ask, “What gift should I get Mom for Mother’s Day?” How do people transform the senti-ments they have for their mother into gifts that represent love and devotion?

• Do Some Sleuthing. Pay attention to conversations and see if there is anything Mom mentions wanting to try or something around the house that may need updating. Practical gifts are less likely to end up unopened in the basement or attic.

• Check Expiration Dates. Gift certificates and cards for particu-lar stores or services are popular come Mother’s Day. But it is essential to check expiration dates, as there is a good chance Mom will put off pampering herself and you would not want the gift to expire before she has a chance to use it.

• Verify A Business. Our mission is to personally engage with and verify the businesses and professionals we highlight in the magazine for our readers. When we say, “Not just anyone makes it into The List,” we mean it! Rest assured that all the ad-vertisers in The List come highly recommended.

• Skip The Chocolate Overload. Calorie-conscious women may not want to be faced with the temptation of a ware-house-sized box of chocolate treats. If Mom truly loves choc-olate, treat her to a gourmet piece or two, but don’t make that your main gift.

• Avoid “Final Sale” items. It can be tempting to peruse the deep-discount rack at Mom’s favorite store when retailers cut prices on items in anticipation of a new season. But, these sales may come with restrictions on returns or exchanges.

• Ask Them About Their Discounts. Many times, a store may have a rewards program. If you saw them in The List Maga-zine, let them know and then drop us a line. We will get you a bounce-back certificate for special savings when you revisit them on your next purchase.

Must Know:Pixie Dust

If you live in the Great South Bay area or even beyond, you very well must know Milk and Sugar.

Fourteen years ago, a dynamic young woman at the age of 24 had a dream and a dime. Her idea was comfort and community - and good food...a place

where people could gather. This wonderful concept became the quaint café that is Milk and Sugar.

With hard work and dedication, she raised three healthy businesses in a community she has faith in. In addition to Milk and Sugar, which remains a hot

spot, she added a catering facility, The Victorian Room, where memories are made...and now a place

for children to call their own, Pixie Dust.

While raising two beautiful children, ages five and six, she further discovered her strengths

as a mother, and with the help of her children’s imagination, the vision that made it possible for this

third venture.

Restoring Facial Volume & Filling Wrinkles NaturallyAs we grow older, the layer of fat under our skin begins to thin. This volume loss, especially around the eyes and mouth, can give a tired and deflated look to the face, and is one of the earliest and most visible signs of aging. Injectable fillers can help correct this for short periods of time, but what if you want a permanent solution?

Autologous fat transfer (Fat Grafting) replaces this loss with an identical substance - excess fat stored somewhere on your body. unwanted fatty deposits can now be put to good use, filling wrinkles and restoring facial volume without resorting to artificial fillers, meaning there is virtually no chance of an allergic reaction.

Sound too good to be true? It’s here, and it’s happening every day! Autologous fat injections are a readily available, relatively inexpensive - and completely natural - alternative for facial rejuvenation. Your own fat can be harvested from almost anywhere of the body (although abdomen, flanks and thighs are preferable), then injected into another area to achieve volume restoration and plumping.

How does autologous fat transfer compare to traditional fillers? Both methods involve applying a small amount of local anesthesia to the treatment area to minimize discomfort during the injection, will result in a minor amount of swelling and/or bruising, and will provide immediate results. The differences between the techniques, both in application and duration, are significant and worthy of discussion.

First and foremost, autologous fat transfer is all-natural because the filler comes from your own body. Transferred

fat is a living graft and, as such, it creates a blood supply much like a skin graft or hair transplant would. However, because it is meant to be a living transplant, a certain amount of the transferred fat will be reabsorbed by the body. This requires minor “over-filling,” which means a small amount of extra fat will be placed in order to allow for this reabsorption. The majority of this “loss” will occur in the first several weeks after the injection, with ideal results in approximately 4 to 6 weeks. As time goes by, the treated area will continue to remodel for approximately 6 months. The general consensus is that the fat remaining at six months will stay permanently. This is in stark contrast to traditional fillers which are completely re-absorbed by the body in as little as three months, or a year at most. Some patients observe a small increase in size years after their procedure because, as the transferred cells become established, they may return to their natural function of storing fat.

Another difference between the two methods would be the relative cost. While autologous fat transfer may appear more costly on first glance, the long-lasting results mean the repeat visits necessary with traditional fillers are no longer required. Additionally, the time for each procedure varies greatly as well. A traditional filler can usually be placed in less than an hour, while fat grafting may require up to 2 to 3 hours.

If you are experiencing volume loss and are in need of facial rejuvenation, perhaps autologous fat transfer is the solution for you.

Dr Roya Emami is a Plastic Surgeon specializing in minimally invasive facial rejuvenation at Natural Beauty Derma Spa.

From The Blues To Bliss:Transcendental Meditation Is Transporting Long Island WomenBy: Janet Hoffman

Let’s face it ladies: the statistics are grim. There’s a plague of stress in the united States. It’s in our schools, our workplaces and our homes. Studies show that one out of four visits by women to physicians involves a prescription for depression. Women today claim to be, on average, forty percent less happy than women forty years ago. There are now more women than men in the workforce, but we are more susceptible to stress at work. Heart disease, already the number one cause of fatality among women, is increasing.

The good news is that there is, easily within our reach, a deterrent and cure for this plague. Research scientists, physicians and celebrities galore are publicly endorsing a scientifically validated technique that reduces stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia and cardiovascular disease, while it increases intelligence, focus, energy, resilience and happiness.

What do Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Oz, Paul McCartney, Dr. Pam Peeke, Jerry Seinfeld and Candy Crowley have in common with six million others worldwide? They all practice the Transcendental Meditation technique. The TM technique, the program for the development of full potential of life founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, has been verified for its positive effects on mental, physical and emotional health by more than 365 peer-reviewed published research studies. Over $25 million of studies done on the benefits of the technique to heart disease has been funded by the National Institutes of Health. This technique is so widely accepted that it is taught in schools, prisons, to the military and veterans, and in businesses, as well as to the public through certified TM

teachers. Ray Dalio, Founder and President of Bridgewater, one of the most successful hedge funds worldwide, credits his success to the TM practice.

Psychiatrist Dr. Joanne Frankel says, “The gains I’ve seen in my patients who practice the TM technique include increases in emotional stability, intuition, self-confidence and mind-body integration.”

Can you just close your eyes and get these results on your own? Will any meditation program work?

Long Island neurologist Dr. Gary Kaplan wrote, “Research shows that for reducing stress and promoting health, all meditation practices are not the same. People who come to me for relief from stress and stress-related disorders need an effective meditation that’s quickly mastered and produces consistent results. Though TM is a mental technique, due to the mind-body relationship, the practice has extensive physiological effects. TM allows the mind to settle very deeply inward - in a natural way. TM teachers call this ‘effortless transcending.’ It’s what sets TM apart and why the technique is so beneficial for mind and body, right from the start.”

Transcendental Meditation is done sitting comfortably with closed eyes, and involves no religion, change in lifestyle, concentration or effort. Long Island TMer Alice Brickman meditates twice a day, and her mother learned TM too when she saw the benefits that Alice was experiencing. Women notice greater happiness, confidence and self-esteem, as well as the broad range of health benefits.

Representing the non-profit educational TM Program for Women on eastern Long Island, TM teacher Cathy Rowe ([email protected]) has been offering instruction in the technique for decades. There are seven steps to learn, including informative presentations and a four-part course. Want to get started? Check out www.TM-women.org or www.TMwomenProfessionals.org.

Janet Hoffman is the National Executive Director of the Transcendental Meditation Program for Women Professionals. [email protected]

Calcium and vitamin D are frequently touted for their ability to improve bone health. While consuming foods rich in vitamin D and calcium is especially important for aging women, both vitamin D and calcium also help to keep the body strong and vital at any age.

Calcium and vitamin D help fight bone loss, and not just in older women. Younger, active women need it to prevent stress fractures and other bone injuries. A 2008 study reviewed the health of 5,000 female U.S. Navy recruits, and those who did not take additional calcium and vitamin D were 25 percent more likely to suffer a stress fracture. A stress fracture is a small fracture of a bone caused by repeated physical strain. Gymnasts, runners and even marching soldiers can suffer such fractures even if they are otherwise healthy.

Calcium is also needed for other parts of the body. The National Institutes of Health Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases National Resource Center says calcium is necessary for the heart, muscles and nerves to function properly. It also helps blood to clot. Furthermore, pregnant women need ample calcium in their diets in order to supply calcium to a growing fetus. If a pregnant woman does not get enough calcium through diet, the baby will draw it from Mom’s own bones, threatening the mother’s health while leading to bone fragility and increasing her risk of fractures.

Calcium and vitamin D work in conjunction. Although a balanced diet may provide enough calcium, many times high levels of salt and protein in one’s diet can increase calcium excretion through the kidneys. Also, people who have an intolerance to lactose may not be getting the calcium they need. Vitamin D is necessary for the body to absorb calcium. Without vitamin D, a woman cannot produce enough calcitriol, impairing calcium absorption from her diet. In turn, the body will take calcium from stores in existing bone, weakening them and preventing the formation of strong, new bone.

Women who may have been deficient in vitamin D and calcium can develop osteoporosis and other bone-loss conditions as they age. Thanks to osteoporosis, half of all women over the age of 50 will have a fracture of the hip, wrist or vertebra during their lifetime, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. A drop in estrogen at the time of menopause can contribute to bone loss. Drinking large amounts of alcohol, maintaining a low body weight and smoking can each cause osteoporosis.

In order to maintain bone and body health, there are certain dietary intake recommendations regarding calcium and vitamin D. Adults under age 50 should consume between 1,000 and 1,300 milligrams of calcium and roughly 600 IU of vitamin D daily. Calcium can be found in dairy products as well as in salmon, shellfish, brazil nuts, dried beans and green, leafy vegetables. Vitamin D is found in fish, eggs and fortified milk. Vitamin D can also form when the body is exposed to sunlight. Even as few as 10 minutes of daily exposure to sunlight can produce vitamin D.

The American Dental Association recom-mends a dental cleaning and examina-tion twice a year, beginning at age 3, to diagnose dental problems in their early stages and, preferably, prevent them in the first place.

A proper dental exam should not be limited to the teeth themselves. It is important for the dentist to perform an oral cancer exam by checking the tongue, cheeks, gums, palate and all soft tissues for any irregularities.

Certain irritants can increase the risk of oral cancer, including alcohol consump-tion, tobacco use (whether smoked, chewed or dipped), but the mouth has a high incidence of being a secondary cancer site (when cancer starts some-where else and metastasizes to the

mouth) as well.

The preventive exam does not stop there. It is important to diagnose gum disease as early as possible to make treatment easier and less expensive. Left unchecked, supporting bone can recede and teeth can potentially loosen and ultimately be lost.

And of course, digital dental x-rays (up to 90% less radioactive than film x-rays) should be taken at proper intervals to diagnose problems hidden under the gums, including decay, abscesses, cysts and impacted teeth.

The final piece of the prevention puzzle is a home-care program tailored to your special needs. Young children require a different home-care program than older

patients who, due to medications or specific medical problems, may produce inadequate saliva, and, thus are at high-er risk of decay due to dry mouth.

As you can see, the key is to see your dentist on a regular basis for a full mouth check up (teeth and soft tissues). The longer you wait, the worse prob-lems become, so bring the entire family and prevent dental problems - or at least catch them early so the treatment is less extensive and less expensive. Ask your dentist about interest-free fi-nancing, and remember, preventive care is a family affair.

Even though it may not be typical conversation amongst friends, more people than you know have heard about how sage can remove negative energy. And although it is a very old ritual, there has been a lot of buzz lately about removing negative energy, perhaps a sign of the times...

Beginning with our Native Americans, sage has been used for centuries to clear negative energy. Many people continue to practice today with the use of White Sage (or Smudge). Although it can be performed at any time, a favorite time of year for smudging is in the spring.

Before performing the

smudging, open all of your windows so that any negative energy that may have gotten “stuck” in your space over the winter months can go right out the windows. Always use caution when smudging. First, light your sage stick (use White Sage if you can), then place the stick in a bowl (an abalone shell is very commonly used). Once the sage is smoking, start in one corner of your space, fanning the smoke upwards (I like to use a feather for this step), at the same time asking all the negative energy to leave your space, to be replaced with positive energy. Smudge all corners and doorways and windows. Always finish where you started to close

the circle. Once finished in one room, you can go throughout the entire house until all rooms have been smudged. This process gives you the opportunity to bring in positive energy with the renewal of Spring.

TIP: Spring brings yard sales and new treasures for us to bring home. It is always a good idea to smudge any treasures that you may pick up. I always like to do this before bringing my treasures into my home.

Fusing elements of yoga, strength conditioning, physical therapy exercises and easy-to-follow, dance-based cardio exercises, BodyART is the perfect compliment to your favorite gym class. In addition, BodyART provides a comprehensive answer to individuals who are short on time and hate choosing between what their body needs versus what it wants.

In one hour, your body will be stretched, moved, strengthened and calmed. Following the energetic flow of the earth’s elements, the body’s energy is awakened, expanded, circulated, descended and released. All of this is done with careful attention to breath and alignment. BodyART is a fully-functional conditioning program, which only uses body weight to engage and balance class participants.

New York City is known for its abundance of fitness and health options, ranging from outdoor Boot Camp classes to posh, boutique Spin offerings. A Zumba class will push your cardiovascular ability to the limit, while Yoga works your mind-body flexibility. Boot Camps are perfect for people who want to kick their strength and conditioning into peak performance.

But when it comes to fitness, the key words are balance and variety. Just like a well-rounded diet, an ideal fitness routine should provide your body with a spectrum of challenges and cross-training drills. Many people tend to gravitate toward a program they like or excel at, while neglecting the ones they find to be “boring” or “too hard.” For others, it’s a matter of time – and they simply do not have enough to cross-train between three or four different classes a week. This is the fitness equivalent of someone who only eats cheese and nothing else. Their protein levels will be great, but they will have massive deficiencies in their Vitamin C count.

The same can be said for fitness. The Zumba junkie might have cardio and endurance levels that are off the charts, but their upper body strength and flexibility will most likely be underdeveloped. We need a “fitness multi-vitamin” to ensure that people receive the full range of cardio/strength/flexibility challenges that a balanced body requires. BodyART is one such solution.

Preventing Soil ErosionHomeowners who spend time tending to their landscape are increasingly looking eco-friendly ways to maintain their lawns and gardens. Homeowners who once relied on potentially harmful pesticides to craft a lush lawn now prefer ways that don’t leave such a significant carbon footprint.

Preventing soil erosion is one way to incorporate conservation into lawn and garden care. Conservation is one of many environmental practices aimed at preserving the planet’s natural resources, which include soil. Preventing soil erosion is easy and can be accomplished in a number of ways.

• Don’t Overwater. Some may assume that keeping soil as damp as possible keeps it healthy. However, overwatering the soil can cause runoff that washes the soil away. In addition, overwatering the soil can degrade it and contribute to erosion. Instead of overwatering, keep the soil moist but don’t overdo it. If you’re having trouble keeping soil moist, consider laying down some mulch, which helps retain moisture and deliver nutrients to the soil that keep it healthy.

• Plant Trees And Shrubs. Trees and shrubs are friends to soil, providing shelter while their roots keep the soil in place

and prevent it from easily blowing away on a windy day. It also helps soil from washing away when warm weather arrives and the landscape must be watered on a daily basis.

• Create Runoff Barriers. Runoff barriers are edges that can be made of brick, stone or other materials that help reduce runoff. Many homeowners install runoff barriers along sidewalks and driveways to ensure the soil does not spill out onto the pavement, but these also help the soil as much as they help to keep walkways and other areas free of soil and looking tidy.

• Consider Leaving Some Grass Around The Garden. Tillage is the process of preparing land to grow crops. While many homeowners don’t view their weekend gardening as growing crops, similar principles apply whether you’re growing crops on a farm or just a few vegetables in the backyard. One such principle is conservation tillage, which means leaving a portion of vegetation in the ground instead of stripping everything away before planting. For home gardeners, consider leaving a small amount of grass around the garden to keep the soil within the garden’s boundaries. It’s a principle similar to installing runoff barriers, and it can be just as effective at preventing soil erosion.

Water Ponds & WaterfallsIncorporating water ponds into your landscape is one of the best ways to make it more aesthetically appealing, while providing you with a relaxing place to enjoy life. Ponds can provide several benefits to both your yard and home, including increasing your home’s resale value and enhancing the overall aesthetic of your lawn.

Traditionally, waterfall-seeking homeowners have installed ponds in their yards, then topped them off with a decorative waterfall feature - often a small stream of water cascading down a jumble of rocks. These types of ponds often feature pretty plantings and even colorful fish. While beautiful, such

installations require a fair amount of maintenance, which is probably why pondless waterfalls eventually emerged.

With pondless waterfalls, water cascades down something - rocks, for example, or a stone wall - and onto a bed of ornamental gravel. The gravel covers a retaining basin that catches the water and a pump that sends it back up to the top of the waterfall. These are great options for those who don’t have the space or desire for a pond, yet love the look and sound of a waterfall.

Water fountains, streams and other features have such beneficial stress-reducing properties that many doctors recognize the benefits of having them installed around your home.

Water ponds can also make nearby plants, flowers, shrubs and trees healthier. They are excellent at filtering chemical runoff naturally and can therefore reduce the harmful effects of chemicals that leach into your soil from various sources outside your home. Additionally, research suggests that having a pond in your garden may improve air quality, as constantly evaporating water can filter the air chemically.

If you are looking for a way to bring peace and tranquility to your property, consider the benefits a pond, waterfall, fountain, stream or pondless waterfall can bring to your backyard.

When You Are Thinking Of Buying, Selling, or Investing

In Real Estate!

Men and women who have tried to sell a home are likely familiar with the phrase “curb appeal.” Curb appeal is similar to getting ready for a big date, only you’re not dressing yourself up to make a strong first impression. Instead, improving curb appeal involves dressing your home up in the hopes it makes a strong first impression on prospective buyers, many of whom will have a strong opinion about the property before they even get out of their cars to have a look around.

Homeowners who want the process of selling their home to go smoothly can improve the property’s curb appeal in a number of ways, many of which don’t necessitate a substantial home improvement budget.

• Clean up. The most effective way to improve curb appeal is to clean up the property. Make sure all hedges are trimmed and remove weeds, sticks and other debris from any flower beds. Lay mulch in the flower beds and garden, as mulch prevents weed growth while helping the soil retain moisture, resulting in more attractive gardens to catch a buyer’s eye.

• Get an “edge” on other sellers. Edge driveways, sidewalks and other walkways around the property, removing or trimming anything that is hanging over the driveway or walkways. If the boundary between your driveway and lawn is not distinct, consider installing edging materials such as stone or bricks.

• Take to the trees. Many homeowners grow accustomed to overgrown trees around their property and may not notice that low-hanging, unsightly branches are hiding the home from view. Buyers want to see the house, so take to the trees and trim any branches that hang too low or obscure your home.

• Clean the gutters. Leaves and sticks hanging from the gutters are a red flag to buyers, who tend to associate clogged gutters with roof damage. Clean the gutters thoroughly before putting your home up for sale. If your property includes lots of trees, install guards to keep twigs and leaves out of the gutters.

• Make the home accessible through the front door. Many homeowners enter their home through a side door or through their garage. If you fall into this category, keep in mind that prospective buyers will be entering through the front door, so make this area accessible. Clear any clutter, such as overgrown hedges, away from the front door, and consider upgrading the door handle to a more modern feature.

• Make sure all plants, including flowers, are living. Dehydrated or dead plants and flowers are eyesores, and they will give buyers the impression that you didn’t pay much attention to your property. Make sure all plants are alive and thriving and replace those that aren’t. You can replant new flowers or plants or just use potted plants instead.
