Reflection

Earlier in St. John’s Gospel, at the Last Supper, Jesus had promised the disciples that God would send them the Spirit, an Advocate, to be with them always and to guide them in truth. No wonder that this is the first thing Jesus does when he appears to the disciples after the Resurrection in St. John’s Gospel. He breathes on them and they receive the Holy Spirit, God’s gift, then and now, to all who believe. In The Book of Genesis, God breathed into the human person created out of clay and thus gave life. Here, in Jesus’ first appearance to the disciples after his resurrection, he breathes on them and gives them the Holy Spirit. It is a re-creation of sorts. The breath of life in the Spirit creates the community of believers who are ‘begotten by God’ (1 St. John 5:1) and ‘united, heart and soul’ (The Acts of the Apostles 4:32). In so doing, Jesus gives us life as God gave Adam life. In turn, we witness to the Spirit’s presence when we treat each other with the love and mercy we have been shown by God, realising that since we are all God’s children we are all sisters and brothers. On Divine Mercy Sunday, we celebrate the boundless mercy of God, who throughout history has forgiven those who have turned away. Jesus preached forgiveness extensively in his ministry, enshrining it in the prayer he taught his disciples. Now he tells his disciples, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. For those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven’ (St. John 20:22–23). God’s mercy is both a gift of which we are unworthy and a model for us to follow.

Fr George Matthews will make the annual Diocesan Appeal in our Parish the weekend of

14/15 April. Fr. George’s religious order of Franciscans will be appealing for our help to fund their seminarians

in India. Many thanks for your support.

will be a Rock ’n’ Roll evening taking place on

Saturday 9 June

We will be entertained on the night by Quiff and The Shades.

Quiff and The Shades started life as a tribute act to the early

years of Cliff Richard and The Shadows. Over the years they have introduced an increasing number of the more popular

and memorable 1960's hits playing music of The

Beatles, The Searchers, Gerry and The Pacemakers, Elvis

Presley, Eddie Cochrane, The Hollies, Buddy Holly and loads more, while still featuring a few Cliff songs and Shads

instrumentals.

Tickets will go on sale after Mass in the near future, so save

the date to avoid disappointment!

We now have only 3 available numbers for the 100 club for the coming year from April 2018. The cost is £12 per

year paid annually. If you would like one or more numbers to support our Parish funds (we raise about

£600 a year), please speak to Kath Gable either after Mass in Holy Trinity Church or call her on 01245 321383 to be

entered for the April draw. Renewal letters are now available in the Church porch.

Thank you for your continued support.

The new gift aid envelope boxes for the new tax year are available for collection in both Churches if you haven’t

already collected your box. Thank you to all parishioners who are already in the gift aid scheme. This really is very beneficial to our parish and the continued functioning of

our parish. If you pay tax and are not already in the parish gift aid scheme and would like to join, there are forms in the

Church porch or speak to Maria Smith in the parish office on 01245 226724, thank you.
