We're allowed to cuss and dress like freaks,
And pierce our noses, tongues and cheeks.
They've outlawed guns, but FIRST the Bible.
To quote the Good Book makes me liable.
We can elect a pregnant Senior Queen,
And the 'unwed daddy,' our Senior King.
It's 'inappropriate' to teach right from wrong,
We're taught that such 'judgments' do not belong.
We can get our condoms and birth controls,
Study witchcraft, vampires and totem poles.
But the Ten Commandments are not allowed,
No word of God must reach this crowd.
It's scary here I must confess,
When chaos reigns the school's a mess.
So, Lord, this silent plea I make:
Should I be shot; My soul please take!

Some of you know I had prostatecancer and recently had some "cor-rective" surgery. You've been
there...they always ask at the doctor's of-fice why you are there, and you have to
answer in front of others what iswrong and sometimes it is embar-
rassing.I had to go to a new doctor
specialist. Thereis nothing worsethan a Doctor's

tell her what iswrong with you in aroom full of otherpatients.
I know most of ushave experi-enced this, thiswas mine...
I walked into acrowded waiting room and approached the desk.
The Receptionist said, 'Yes sir, what are you seeing the Doctor for
today?''There's something wrong with my penis, I replied.The receptionist became irritated and said, 'You shouldn't come into
a crowded waiting room and say things like that. ''Why not, you asked me what was wrong and I
told you,' he said.The Receptionist replied; 'Now you've caused
some embarrassment in this room full of people.You should have said there is something wrongwith your ear or something and discussed theproblem further with the Doctor in private.'
I replied, 'You shouldn't ask people questionsin a room full of strangers, if the answer could em-barrass anyone. I walked out,waited several min-utes, and then re-entered.
The Receptionist smiled smugly and asked,'Yes??'
'There's something wrong with my ear,' I stated.The Receptionist nodded approvingly and
smiled, knowing I had taken her advice.. 'Andwhat is wrong with your ear, Sir?'
'I can't urinate out of it,' I replied.The waiting room erupted in laughter...My new philosophy...Mess with seniors, and
you're going to lose.
One Of My FavesI
was in the park re-cently and I wanted toread a magazine but
was being challenged bya little girl who was deter-mined to get some atten-
tion. She wanted to knowwhat the United Stateslooked like. Finally, I torea sheet out of my newmagazine out on whichwas printed the map ofthe country containing anational story about blueand red states.
Tearing it into smallpieces, I gave it to her and
said, 'Go over there on thepicnic table and see if youcan put this together.
After a few minutes,she returned and handedme the map, correctly fit-
ted and taped together.I was surprised and
asked how she had fin-ished so quickly..
'Oh,' she said, 'on theother side of the page is apicture of Jesus. When Igot all of Jesus back to-gether where He be-longed, Then, our countryjust came together.'

This clubis lead by District 5280 PresidentKaren Weigel, who flew to Fiji tohelp the natives after the meeting.(Talk about practicing what youpreach!) It is a fun crowd that sup-ports the community in helping pro-vide meals to the elderly; shoes,backpacks and supplies to schoolchildren, free eye exams and glassesfor students, scholarships and much
more. At a recent meeting I at-
tended, my dad, Craig MacDonald,was the keynote speaker on"Yosemites Unsung Hero," JessieBenton Fremont, who lead the firstsuccessful effort to save Yosemite.Also speaking was Assemblyman AlMuratsuchi of the 66th District,which includes Manhattan Beach,
Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach,Torrance, Rancho Palos Verdes,
Rolling Hills Estates,Palos VerdesEstates and The Los Angeles Com-munities of Harbor City, HarborGateway, El Camino Viillage,Lomita and West Carson. He gave abrief report on what he is doing toimprove his areas. The food waswonderful and meeting room lookedout at the beautiful Harbor. HBUHS Senior CarolineMoore of Fountain Valley HighSchool is one of more than 1,600high school students competingfor about 800 AchievementScholarship awards, which recog-nize "academically promisingblack students throughout the na-tion," according to the NMSC.As one of only 100 of the semifi-nalists are from California, wesalute Caroline for her academiceffort.
Surf City (aka HuntingtonBeach), not to be out done bytheir neighbor, also had a semifi-nalist; Amber Gibson who attendsEdison High School.
About 80 percent of the semifi-
nalists are expected to become fi-nalists, and more than half of thefinalists will win an AchievementScholarship.
To become finalists, semifinal-ists and their high schools submitdetailed scholarship applications,including information about aca-demic records, participation,community activities and educa-tional goals; an essay; earn highSAT scores; and be endorsed by ahigh school official.
Finalists will be announced inJanuary. More than $2.5 millionhas been set aside for this year'sscholarships. Corporate and busi-ness sponsors will underwriteabout 100 Achievement Scholar-ship awards for finalists who meetcriteria set by the grantor.
More than 160,000 high schooljuniors from across the UnitedStates entered the scholarshipcompetition when the took the2012 PSAT.

rial individuals and government. Free-dom to control your destiny. Freedom to
benefit from your hard work and creativ-ity. Freedom to succeed or fail. Freedomto determine your level of
prosperity.The American Dream was es-
tablished on the principle that,for the first time in humanhistory, a country was es-tablished with a gov-ernment designed to
be a servant of thepeople. TheAmerican Dreamis one of self-
sufficiency, notgovernment de-
pendence andcontrol.
The Ameri-can Dream cul-tivates thelimitless powerof the individ-ual to build, cre-ate, discover,invent, and inno-vate. The Ameri-can Dream is the
pioneer spirit that mo-tivates people to succeedagainst all odds in order todo what has never been done
before.Prior to Americas founding, coun-
tries around the world had been so op-pressed by totalitarian regimes that individual freedom wasan unknown concept. One's position in life was determined
by those in power. There was no hope of a better existence.An individual had no control over his destiny no matter howhard he worked. The position someone was born into waswhere they remained for life. The American Dream recog-nized the equality of each person as being an inalienableright. It didn't matter who you were or where you started,you could go anywhere.
The American Dream is simple. It puts the destiny ofevery individual into their own hands.Each person is free to benefit directly
from their efforts. The AmericanDream taps into the essence of humannature; when people have the freedomto determine their own destiny, produc-tivity flourishes.
The American Dream un-leashed the power of the in-dividual as never before. Inless than 200 years fromour founding, America hadsurpassed all other nationsin wealth, production, andinnovation. Americans havecreated and maintained thehighest standard of living everknown.
The American Dream attractspeople from every other country be-cause of its unparalleled liberty. TheAmerican Dream is one of equal op-
portunity, not equal outcomes. Theregimes people escaped from all
proved that the only outcome that canbe guaranteed is the equal distributionof misery.
Every American benefits from TheAmerican Dream. Success has a posi-tive impact on all. It creates a vibrant,growing society filled with opportu-nity. People are willing to work hardwhen they are free to benefit from theirefforts and able to retain the fruits oftheir labor.
Nothing is better than The American
Dream where each individual has the right and freedom todetermine their own life. What is the alternative? Is it beingtold what you can and cannot do? Is it having some personor government deciding what is fair for you to have?
There are those who dont like The American Dream. Thereasons are many: greed, power, control, or the destructionof our country. Regardless of their motives, the result if theyare successful is the same; the loss of freedom and the in-
ability to control your life and destiny.Although it's difficult to believe that
anyone could be opposed to lib-erty, both history and current
events clearly demonstratethat those who want to
destroy The AmericanDream exist and are
determined to sub-vert your free-dom.
The ever pres-
ent threat toThe AmericanDream is peo-
ple who believethe governmentshould controlyou, dictatehow you live,and determinewhat is permit-
ted. Thesepower hungry au-thoritarians seek to
enrich themselves bycreating laws designed
to confiscate the resultsof your hard work. The
American Dream attracts ver-min who view government as an
opportunity to enrich themselves byconfiscating wealth from others. The suc-
cess of the productive attracts economic parasites.The American Dream requires your constant care, vigi-
lance, and support to keep it alive. Freedom is your right,but it isnt free. Take it for granted, and it will vanish. Noone has the right to steal your American Dream. Stand upfor liberty and reject anyone who wants to take it from you.You are The American Dream.

The 7th DEA Na-tional Take BackInitiative Event isscheduled for Sat-urday, October 26,2013, between the
hours of 10:00a.m. and 2:00 p.m.at the front desk of
the HuntingtonBeach Police De-
partment. The goal of
the program is to allow Hunt-ington Beach residents to de-liver all of their unused,unwanted or expired medica-tions to law enforcement offi-cials who can dispose of these
controlled substances in a se-cure and non-hazardous man-ner, potentially saving lives andprotecting the ecosystem. Med-ications in liquid form and sy-ringes will not be accepted.
On September 24, three new officers were sworn-in to HBPD. Steve Flynncomes to us from the Los Angeles Police Department. Kevin Heusser joinsus from the Golden West Police Academy having served our country for
four years in the Navy. Alex Durham, one of our youngest members to becomea police officer at HBPD also comes froam Golden West Police Academy.

Whats in an a m e ?That depends onwho you ask.
In the marketing world, names are part of yourbrand, who and what you are and how you are per-ceived. Brands have value that can be monetized.How much a brand is worth depends on your lineof business, your percentage of the market and howrecognizable you are.
The Washington Redskins have been so namedfor over 80 years. According to Forbes, the Red-skins are worth $1.7 billion, the third most valuablefranchise in the NFL behind only the Dallas Cow-
boys and the New England Patriots. The teams
brand, which includes its name, constitutes $145million of the Redskins value. Forbes estimatesthat the team netted $104 million on revenue of$381 million last year. It should be noted thatForbesis notorious for underestimating both fran-chise values and team revenues.
Add it all up and you can readily see why Red-skins owner Dan Snyder says adamantly that hewill never - NEVER, capitalized change theteams nickname, despite the fact he has been underintense pressure to do so for years. Native Ameri-cans, sports writers and celebrities have long cam-
paigned for a name change. Even President Obamarecently weighed in on the issue, saying if he werethe owner, and I knew that there was a name of myteam even if it had a storied history that was of-fending a sizeable group of people, Id think about
changing it.A cynic might point out that because
the Presidents actions offenda sizeable group of peo-ple, perhaps he should consider resigning.
Is the name Redskins demeaning to Native Ameri-cans? Some Native Americans claim it is; others feel
differently.In 2004, the Annenberg Public Policy Centerpolled 1,000 Native Americans from across the U.S. andfound that 90% of respondents did not find the nick-name Redskins to be offensive. Closer to home, leadersof a number of American Indian tribes in Virginia have
publicly expressed their support for the teams name.If we change the name Redskins, doesnt that mean
we must also ban other sports nicknames that refer toNative Americans, such as the Chiefs in Kansas City?And moving from one sport to another, how about In-dians in Cleveland and Braves in Atlanta?
Changing a sports teams name isnt as simple as itmay seem. There are regulatory and legal hoops to
jump through and any name change carries with it fi-nancial risks to the team. Will fans be offended and stop
supporting the team? Will the sales of logoed merchan-dise be adversely affected?On the flip side, teams arewilling to change their name if the current one is moreof a liability than a benefit. Unless and until that hap-
pens with the Redskins, dont expect the team to changeits nickname.

The Russells left San Diego on Aug. 27 to arrive in London on Aug. 28. After a fewdays visiting Windsor and London we embarked the Royal Caribbean Brilliance ofthe Seas at Harwich, United Kingdom for
a 2 week cruise. Our Ports of calls wereLe Havre, France, Portland, Dorset
United Kingdom, Cork, Ireland, Dublin,Ireland, Klaksvik, Faroe Islands, Reykjavik,
Iceland and then across the Atlantic toBoston.
Our First stop Le Havre, France we hireda mini van and guide to take us to Nor-mandy where we visited Omaha & Utahbeaches plus the American cemetery whereour troops were buried. This was a verymoving experience it is hard to imaginehow we won the war with so much againstus at Normandy. The weather, the bloodbath on the beach where we lost 4000Americans and yet we got through and intoFrance to liberate them. The Cemetery isan American territory but maintained by theFrench but they are paid by the US.
Portland UK is situated the county ofDorset on the Jurassic Coast and is the ge-ological wonderland of Portland.The en-
tire place is made up of limestone. Thecity held the Olympic sailing event here.We visited a unique 300 year old Light-house where you can see some dramaticvistas and the locals like to hike and pic-nic.
On Sept. 3 we arrived in Cork, Irelandwhere we visited the Blarney Castle.Those that kiss the Blarney Stone or stoneof Eloquence will never again be at a lossfor words. We toured the Jame-son Distillery where Theo was picked to be anofficial taster, she compared Scotch Whisky(Black Label), American Whiskey (JackDaniels) and Jameson. The Jameson wonhands down. We visited lots of fun Irish Pubsand just enjoyed the city.
After a day of cursing we arrived atKlaksvik, Faroe Islands. Faroe means faraway and they are. The town is located onBorboy, which is a part of the northern islands.The first settlement dates back to Viking times.Today it is the cultural and commercial centerfor the Northern Isles and the Faroe Islands.Klaksvik is located between two inlets lying
back to back. Its harbor is important becauseof the fishing industry. In April 2006 they openedthe sub sea tunnel, the Noroouatunnilin which connects one of the islands. There are 18 is-
lands only 2 are inhabited by the 17,000 population. There are no trees growing on the is-lands.
We visited a 2000 year old house with a grass roof and a very oldcemetery.
Our last port before Boston was Reykjavik, Iceland. Reykjavikmeans smoky bay. This name comes from the steam rising fromthe geothermal springs. This is the worlds northernmost capital
city. We visited many beautiful waterfalls and in the Gulifoss re-gion the geysers. We saw the Litu Geyser Erupt. All around uswere the lava plains which are covered with green moss. One ofthe most amazing and beautiful places we visited. Reykjavik isalso known for their mineral rich waters and Blue Lagoon a veryluxurious spa. In town there is a very impressive Hallgrimskirjachurch, resembling volcanic rock formations. One interest noteabout Iceland is they are known for their horses. Their horses have5 gates instead of 3, they have a fast walk & a fast run, both being
very smooth. Alsothe horses are easyto train and veryfriendly.

The City of Seal Beach announce it has beenawarded a Sustainability Program grant in theamount of $150,000 by the Southern Cali-
fornia Association of Governments(SCAG).
The grant will cover the costs of de-veloping a Climate Action Plan
(CAP) for the City. A CAP pro-vides a comprehensive strategyto address Greenhouse Gas(GHG) emissions related toland use, transportation,building design, energy use,water demand, and wastegeneration. The Citys CAPwill outline a road map toreduce GHGs and promoteeconomic development basedon clean technology and sus-tainable practices.
For the past three decades,SCAG has prepared Regional Trans-portation Plans (RTPs) with the pri-mary goal of increasing mobility for theregions residents and visitors. SCAG has
placed a greater emphasis than ever before on sustain-
ability and integrated planning in the 2012-2035 RegionalTransportation Plan/Sustainable Communities Strategy
(RTP/SCS). The 2012-2035 RTP/SCS in-cludes a strong commitment to reduce
emissions from transportationsources to comply with SB 375,
improve public health, and
meet the National AmbientAir Quality Standards as set
forth by the federal CleanAir Act.

(AFRL) Directed Energy Directorate, Kirtland Air ForceBase, N.M., successfully tested the Counter-electronics High-powered Microwave Advanced Missile Project (CHAMP)during a flight over the Utah Test and Training Range.
CHAMP, which renders electronic targets useless, is a non-kinetic alternative to traditional explosive weapons that usethe energy of motion to defeat a target.
Power is cut to a room of computers after being hit by ahigh-powered microwave pulse from a Counter-electronicsHigh-powered Advanced Missile Project.
During the test, the CHAMP missile navigated a pre-pro-grammed flight plan and emitted bursts of high-powered en-ergy, effectively knocking out the target's data and electronicsubsystems. CHAMP allows for selective high-frequencyradio wave strikes against numerous targets during a singlemission.
"This technology marks a new era in modern-day warfare,"said Keith Coleman, CHAMP program manager for BoeingPhantom Works. "In the near future, this technology may be

we can all take to pre-vent beach erosion?
~ Kyle Phillips, via e-mailBeach erosion is a huge issue for coastal areas in the U.S.
and elsewhere. According to the non-profit American Shore& Beach Preservation Association (ASBPA), all beaches en-dure storms and other natural disturbances that cause them tolose sand, but the causes of beach erosion are not always thesame. On the West Coast, beaches are sand-starved whenriver dams block the flow of sand, the group reports. That
contrasts with Eastern beaches, they say, which often lacksand because inlets or navigation projects interrupt the move-ment of sand along the shore. Things as disparate as storm-driven waves or a simple change in an offshore sandbar may
cause one coastal area to lose sand while another gains.Ultimately, a beach erodes because the supply of sand tothe beach can not keep up with the loss of sand to the sea,says Ken Rubin, Assistant Professor of Geology and Geo-physics at the University of Hawaii. Most sand is transportedfrom inland via rivers and streams. The damming of most wa-terways in the U.S. has thus prevented a major supply of sandfrom getting to our beaches.
He adds that beach erosion can be exaggerated during pe-riods of rapid sea level rise, suchas that which we are expected toexperience soon as a result ofglobal warming melting the polarice caps. When the encroachingsea comes against peoples prop-erty, the tendency is for people totry and stop the encroaching sea,Rubin reports. They armor the
shoreline with seawalls, revet-ments, jetties, etc. [which] have anegative effect on beaches be-cause once sea water reachesthem, it bounces off them withmore energy than a wave wash-ing back off a normal sandbeach. The result is that moresand is carried off shore, promot-ing additional beach loss. And theincreased severity and frequencyof storms due to climate changeonly serves to further stir up theremaining sand at many beaches.
Unfortunately, beyond keepingour carbon footprints in check,there isnt much that individualscan do to prevent beach erosion.
Building bulkheads in front of in-dividual homes, or along entire
beachfronts, may provide some short-term relief from beacherosion, but as often as not these actions can cause worseproblems in the long run. And land use regulations that re-quire homes and buildings to be built with a big buffer zone
to the beach can go a long way toward protecting personalproperty and home values in coastal areas, but they wonthelp prevent beach erosion.
According to ASBPA, physically adding sand to beachesto replace losses is really the best fix: Coastal scientists haveyears of experience with beach restoration projects and havelearned that adding sand in the right quantities, properly en-gineered and maintained, can make a beach last forever.
Of course the best solution to any problem, includingbeach erosion, is to address the causes, not the symptoms.Concerted global efforts to curb the emissions that are driv-ing climate change and the elimination of dams along in-land waterways are both urgently needed lest we want tokeep spending millions of dollars on remediation projectsthat just have to be repeated over and over again in what isessentially a losing battle.

Intimidated by wine? You're not alone.Consider the prototypical wine connoisseur -

Or consider a representative tasting note.Wine Spectator recently praised a wine for offeringnotes of "creamy boysenberry, plum skin and cassis . .. [along with] hints of mesquite and grilled herbs."
They're bewildering.Add to that the number of wine regions, grape varieties,
and production methods that oenophiles can easily rattleoff, and it's no wonder why so many people find wine sodaunting.
Keep your chin up. Wine might be complex, but at theend of the day, it's just fermented grape juice. And thebest way to learn about wine is to drink it.
For budding wine enthusiasts, the importance of tastingis impossible to overstate. Even simple questions, likeyour go-to varietal on a normal weeknight, are impossible
to answer until you've tasted hundreds of different wines.
If you prefer white wine, do you seek ones that arecrisp and light, like Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre?Or do you prefer whites that are buttery and ripe, like
California Chardonnay? If you prefer red, do youseek out big, muscular wines, like Napa ValleyCabernet Sauvignon? Or the more restrained profileof Pinot Noir from Burgundy?
Tasting can be as simple as visiting the local wineshop or attending a food and wine festival. Getting to-gether with friends and asking each person to bringsomething different is another way to taste severalwines at once.
One of my favorite tastings is a bit more formal. I se-lect four varietals -- generally Sauvignon Blanc,Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah -- and open two bot-
tles of each, one from California and one from France.The stereotype tells us that American wines are
fruitier than their French counterparts. While one canfind wines that debunk this stereotype, it's based intruth. So I purposefully seek out wines that fit thestereotype. And I serve everything blind, pouring thewines from paper bags to mask where they're from.
Recognizing the differences should be obvious, evento novices.
The aromatics of California Sauvignon Blanc are in-tense, typically reminiscent of fresh-cut grass and grape-fruit. French Sauvignon Blanc, especially from Sancerreand Pouilly Fum, presents more subtle aromatics, likechalk and white flowers.
Chardonnay provides a similar contrast. While Cali-fornia Chardonnays are characterized by tropical fruitsand butter, French Chardonnays are marked by tart fruits,like green apples and lime.
When Pinot Noir comes from warmer regions of Cal-
ifornia, like Napa Valleyand Carneros, it presentsaromatics of sweet fruits,
like black cherries. In theFrench region of Bur-gundy, Pinot Noir gener-ally offers aromas of tartcherries and earth.
Syrah can offer astunning contrast. Many
California winemakers utilize the grape to produce fruitbombs -- think gobs of ripe blackberries and licorice.French Syrah is typically more restrained, marked byblueberries, meat, and pepper.
Looking for differences between similar wines is ex-tremely educational. And when the paper bag comes offeach bottle, it's exciting to see whether or not you cor-rectly deduced the origin of each.
Most showdowns have a winner. But with wine, nei-ther France nor the United States makes "better" wine.My preferences shift all the time.
This is just one model for a tasting, of course. Onecan just as easily host a "wine on a budget" party, se-lecting several bottles under $10. It's also fun to exploreone grape, in depth. Pinot Noir, for example, is partic-ularly expressive -- so it's fun to explore the differencesbetween classic bottlings from Napa, Sonoma, Oregon,and Burgundy.
Once wine becomes a passion, those baffling tastingnotes make sense. Hard-to-pronounce regions across Eu-rope become easier to remember. Those flaws that som-meliers can spot become obvious. But only if you'vetasted enough wine. So start drinking.
