God’s People Gather for Worship

By God’s grace alone and to his glory alone, we exist to worship God in his greatness and his holiness with Gospel-drive passion and integrity…” (excerpted from FPC Rome Mission Statement)

Preparing our Hearts and Petitioning God’s Presence

Prelude "Prayer" E. Humperdink Dr. Patty Nelson, organist Invocation

Declaring God’s Praise

Call to Worship Psalm 25:1-9

Hymn No. 16 “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name” DIADEM

Affirming Our Faith Heidelberg Catechism, Lord’s Day 9

ALL: We believe that the eternal Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who out of nothing created heaven and earth and everything in them, who still upholds and rules them by his eternal counsel and providence, is our God and Father because of Christ his Son. We trust him so much that we do not doubt he will provide whatever we need for body and soul, and he will turn to our good whatever adversity he sends us in this sad world. He is able to do this because he is almighty God; he desires to do this because he is a faithful Father. Nothing will separate us from his love.

Confessing Our Sin and Embracing Our Forgiveness

Call to Confession and Silent Prayers of Confession

Responsive Assurance of Divine Pardon

Leader: “So when the devil throws our sins in our faces and declares that we deserve death and hell, we’ll tell him this:

ALL: ‘I admit that I deserve death and hell. What of it? For I know the one who suffered and made satisfaction on my behalf. His name is Jesus Christ, Son of God, and where He is there I shall be also.’” Quoted from Martin Luther

Interceding for Our World

Prayer for God’s People, Work and World, and the Lord’s Prayer Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name.

Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts,

as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

Hearing God’s Word

“The Bible is alive, it speaks to me; it has feet, it runs after me; it has hands, it lays hold of me… A simple layman armed with Scripture is to be believed above a pope or a cardinal without it.”

Martin Luther, quoted in “Martin Luther--The Early Years,”

Christian History, no. 34.

Hymn of Preparation “Speak, O Lord” SPEAK, O LORD

“Speak, O Lord, as we come to You To receive the food of Your Holy Word.

Take Your truth, plant it deep in us; Shape and fashion us in Your likeness,

That the light of Christ might be seen today In our acts of love and our deeds of faith.

Speak, O Lord, and fulfill in us All Your purposes for Your glory.

Teach us, Lord, full obedience, Holy reverence, true humility;

Test our thoughts and our attitudes In the radiance of Your purity.

Cause our faith to rise; cause our eyes to see Your majestic love and authority.

Words of pow’r that can never fail— Let their truth prevail over unbelief.

Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds;

Help us grasp the heights of Your plans for us— Truths unchanged from the dawn of time

That will echo down through eternity. And by grace we’ll stand on Your promises, And by faith we’ll walk as You walk with us.

Speak, O Lord, till Your church is built And the earth is filled with Your glory.”

Ministry Opportunities

Pardue preaching The Five “Solas” of the Reformation – The Five “Solas” of the Reformation – Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone) Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone)

NEXT SUNDAY’S WORSHIP SERVICES (10/8/17): Convergent Service in King Hall (10:30 am): Classic Service in the Sanctuary (10:30 am): Rev. Chadwick preaching Rev. Schwartz preaching The Five “Solas” of the Reformation – The Five “Solas” of the Reformation – Sola Fide (Faith Alone) Sola Fide (Faith Alone) The Sacrament of Communion will be celebrated at both Services on October 8th. Please use this week to prepare your heart and mind to receive this gift of God rightly.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS – Please be sure to extend a special welcome to our newest members who joined the church last Sunday: Stephen Griffin, John & Vickie Goodrich, Charles & Marie Carlisle, Sarah Curl, Carla McFarland, Thomas Orr, and Ricky & Ginger Wright, along with their son Avery.

FOCUS ON THE “FIVE SOLAS” OF THE REFORMATION IN WORSHIP DURING OCTOBER: This year marks the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. One of the hallmarks of the Reformation was that it called us back to core foundational truths upon which the Church is built – “Scripture Alone”, “Faith Alone”, “Grace Alone”, “Christ Alone”, and “To God’s Glory Alone”. Each of the five Sundays in October will be focused on one of these five foundational truths. Both pastors who preach on a given Sunday will focus on the same “sola”, though the messages will be different, and may be drawn from a different Scripture passage. This means that none of the messages preached in October will be repeated in the other service. On the final Sunday of October will join together for a combined service in the Sanctuary as our special celebration of the Reformation itself, with our focus that day being on the foundational truth that all of life is to be lived “To God’s Glory Alone.”

COMMUNITY MISSIONS – Good Neighbor Ministries is a community outreach staffed by volunteers and financially supported by numerous local churches, including First Presbyterian. Good Neighbor Ministries helps Rome residents in need by assisting with utility bill payments, rent, prescriptions, clothing for work, and personal items. It also refers people to the local food pantry and the furniture Re-store. Right now they are asking for donations of Toilet Tissue and Diapers (of any size). One of the most frequently requested personal item is toilet tissue. Diapers are bundled into smaller amounts and given to parents of small children whenever needed. You may drop them off at the church on Wednesday Evenings or Sunday Mornings. As always, volunteers are greatly needed to be receptionists or interviewers with training provided. Volunteers are asked to work only 1 day a month from 9am until 12. For more information, please contact Jill Fisher at 706-409-3932 or email [email protected].

WEDNESDAY NIGHT FAMILY GATHERING – We have a tremendous opportunity to hear from special guest speakers J & B, who are currently serving in North Asia. This will be during our Fellowship Hall class on Wednesday evening, October 4. Counter Cultural, our current series by Rev. Bill Pardue, will resume October 11. First Presbyterian Church has faithfully supported this family for many years. Most of our communication has been through cryptic emails. We are anticipating this first-hand update. Please plan on joining us! If you would like to hear more about our speaker, please contact Natalie Pettegrew at [email protected]. Reservations for dinner may be made at www.fpcrome.org.
