How? How did the U.S. gain the Louisiana Territory?

• In 1800, Napoleon signed the Treaty of San Ildefonso with Spain to gain the Louisiana Territory.

• Jefferson was concerned with the possibility of Napoleon closing the Mississippi River to U.S. trade.

• Jefferson sent Livingston to negotiate the purchase of New Orleans, parts of the east bank of the Mississippi, and free navigation of the river for trade.

• Pressured by a revolution in Haiti, Napoleon offered the U.S. the entire Louisiana territory for funds to continue his war efforts.

How?

• Livingston and Monroe took advantage of the offer without waiting for approval from Jefferson.

• The U.S. purchased 828,000 square miles for $15 million or 60 million Francs.

• Jefferson was surprised by the purchase, but agreed because of his support for westward expansion.
