Welcome to our new season!

2013 will be the year of LS Lowry. We are delighted that Tate Britain will be presenting the first major London exhibition of the artist since his death in 1976. And at the same time, our Galleries will be showing something a little special too. Unseen Lowry will be a chance to see some of LS Lowry’s works that have never been displayed in public before.

In our Theatres, we’re continuing to grow the range and depth of our programme. At the end of last year, we announced our run of the National Theatre’s War Horse, and the show is already breaking all previous Lowry sales records. Although there are still tickets left – we advise that you book early to avoid disappointment!

And on the other side, we’re proud that our “Developed With The Lowry” programme in The Studio won a prestigious Mobius Peter Brook Empty Space Award for developing emerging artists. This now award-winning programme was given a further shot in the arm with support from the Jerwood Foundation to build our new Accelerate programme. See page 33 to find out more.

And the great art is continuing outside The Lowry, as the Quays Cultural Programme presents one of its most ambitious projects to date with Speed of Light. I saw this work illuminate Edinburgh over the summer, and I can’t wait to see the whole of the Quays lit up in a breathtaking outdoor spectacle. This free event is not to be missed!

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who supported our Christmas appeal. Thanks to your support, we raised over £21,000 to help work with Looked After Children across Salford.

We hope you enjoy the season!

Ranging from landscapes to studies of individual figures and drawings of mill scenes, the exhibition provides a further opportunity to explore Lowry’s work and offers a memorable insight into the artist’s life and career.

MusicalsMusicals

Straight from her sensational West End season, the ‘blistering talent’ Emi Wokoma stars in this ‘slick’ new musical inspired by the life and times of Ike and Tina Turner (The Times).

Following the highs and lows, and passions and heartbreak, of Ike and Tina as their careers soared and their marriage crumbled, Soul Sister is full of heart and soul, electrifying choreography and stunning musical numbers.

Featuring the hits What’s Love Got To Do With It?, Proud Mary, Private Dancer, River Deep Mountain High and,

of course, Simply the Best plus many more...it is sure to have you on your feet, partying the night away.

Wokoma’s ‘volcanic voice’ (Daily Mail) has taken London by storm, with critics and audiences alike raving about her raw energy and dazzling command of Turner’s classic hits.

Do not miss Wokoma’s star-making performance alongside the complete West End cast including Chris Tummings’ triumphant ‘hissably cocksure and sleazy Ike’ (The Independent), the ‘exuberant Ikettes’ (Daily Express) and the ‘superb’ on-stage live band (Metro).

Sex, scandal and showbiz in the 1940s. The hit musical returns following a sell-out run in The Studio in 2011 – bigger, bolder and with more burlesque.

Northern lass Maggie Brown has moved to London in search of fame. She auditions at every cabaret bar with her songwriter George, but nobody wants their act. And things aren’t going any better with her boyfriend Tom.

Everything changes when Maggie and George are picked up by wealthy nightclub owner, Sir Frank.

Soon ‘Miss Nightingale’ explodes onto the stage - shocking society with her outrageous outfits and saucy songs.

But backstage, lurk secrets more destructive than the Blitz.

Miss Nightingale - the burlesque musical is a ‘captivating love story’ (What’s On Stage) that brings the vintage glamour of war-torn London thrillingly to life. With 20 original numbers performed by a talented troupe of actor musicians and starring burlesque bombshell Amber Topaz.

‘Amber Topaz plays the heroine with great

panache proving both sexy and touching.’

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences.

The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.

Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award-winning Blood Brothers, and Bill Kenwright’s production, having recently celebrated its 23rd phenomenal year in London, continues to enjoy standing ovations at every devastating performance.

By Mike Leigh.Directed by Lindsay Posner.

Mon 29 April – Sat 4 May

After a triumphant run in London’s West End, this acclaimed revival of one of the most popular plays ever written arrives at The Lowry and stars Hannah Waterman, Martin Marquez, Samuel James, Katie Lightfoot and Emily Raymond.

Mike Leigh’s comedy became an instant classic when it appeared as a BBC Play For Today in 1977. It is a ruthlessly accurate observation of the pretensions of suburbia, a world obsessed with class and taste and ruled over by the monstrous Beverly!

Drama

Adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from the novel by Susan Hill.

Mon 6 – Sat 11 May

Combining the power and intensity of live theatre with a cinematic quality inspired by the world of film noir, prepare to be transported into a terrifying and ghostly world. Celebrating 23 years in the West End, with over 7 million people having lived to tell the tale, The Woman in Black is one of the most exciting, gripping and successful theatre events ever staged. Susan Hill’s best-selling novel has since been turned into a major motion picture starring Daniel Radcliffe.

A lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a ‘woman in black’, engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough, but as they reach further into his darkest memories, they find themselves caught up in a world of eerie marshes and moaning winds. The borders between make believe and reality begin to blur and the flesh begins to creep….

ITV’s top comedy of all time, Rising Damp, comes to the stage in a brand new production from the Comedy Theatre Company, producers of the stage versions of Victoria Wood’s dinnerladies and BBC TV’s Birds of a Feather.

An unnamed northern university town is home to Rupert Rigsby, landlord of arguably the seediest, most run-down boarding house that England has to offer. His unlikely tenants include Ruth Jones, an administrator at the university; Alan, a medical student; and Philip, who is studying town and country planning. Between them, Alan and Philip are the focus and foil of the majority of Rigsby’s many prejudices, usually at the expense of his dignity and standing in the eyes of Miss Jones, with whom he is hopelessly and pathetically in love.

The Old Vic and West-End smash hit Noises Off comes to The Lowry following its triumphant and critically acclaimed sell-out run in London.

Hailed as one of the greatest British comedies ever written, Michael Frayn’s multi-award-winning backstage farce serves up a riotous double bill – a play within a play. Hurtling along at breakneck speed it follows the backstage antics of a touring theatre company as they

stumble their way through rehearsals in Weston-super-Mare, to a shambolic Wednesday matinee in Ashton-under-Lyne, and a final disastrous performance in Stockton-on-Tees.

Cast includes Neil Pearson (Monroe, Between the Lines, Drop the Dead Donkey, Bridget Jones’ Diary), Maureen Beattie (Lewis, The Bill, Taggart, Casualty), David Bark-Jones, Simon Bubb, Danielle Flett, Geoffrey Freshwater, Chris Larkin, Thomasin Rand and Sasha Waddell.

Taking its inspiration from the Henry David Thoreau quote “not until we are lost do we begin to find ourselves”, this brand new show from the critically acclaimed Ockham’s Razor demonstrates that you sometimes need a shift in perspective to find your way.

Using aerial movement to create atmospheric, exciting physical theatre, this series of short stories with live music, explores what it is to be lost. Featuring originally designed aerial structures, images unfold above and around the audience, putting them right at the heart of the action.

SutraTue 14 & Wed 15 May

Sutra is a collaboration between one of Europe’s most exciting choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Turner Prize-winning sculptor Antony Gormley and 17 practicing Buddhist monks from the Shaolin Temple in China. A performance that is at once deeply hypnotic, playful and breathtakingly athletic.

Aged between 10 and 26 years, the monks performing in Sutra follow a strict Buddhist doctrine, with kung fu and tai chi martial arts forming a part of their daily ritual. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (who is a big Bruce Lee fan) spent several months at their Temple before devising his awe-inspiring piece. During Sutra the monks perform such spectacular, dare devil moves that you see them quite literally as leaps of faith.

Antony Gormley’s stage setting consisting of 21 wooden boxes which are carried or pushed around the stage by the monks, becoming walls, boats, beds, skyscrapers, toys, temples – whatever is needed. It is set to a specially commissioned score by Polish composer Szymon Brzóska for piano, percussion and strings which is performed live.

Christmas

This brand new show brings the well-loved, legendary characters of Robin and his Merry Men to life in a magical, fun-filled adventure story with music. With brave heroes, daredevil kidnappings, a cruel Sheriff of Nottingham and a very feisty Marian, it promises to be a thrilling show for everyone aged six and above.

Wanted! Robin Hood is a brand new adaptation of the classic tale, written by Charles Way. Charles was last seen at the Library Theatre Company adapting Charles Dickens’ Hard Times to fantastic reviews in 2011, but he is best known for his imaginative and award-winning plays for families which have been performed all over the world. Amy Leach who directed Arabian Nights, described by The Times as the 'perfect family show', also returns to the Library Theatre Company.
