Jess Green is LSU’s Vice President Activities – responsible for developing opportunities for LJMU students in sports, clubs and societies as well trips and other events and activities across the student union.
Over the past month Jess has been working on the following;
~ Our Dragons’ Den competition as part of the Better Union Forum was a big success. Congratulations to Looprevil Radio and the RAG Society who won funding for their projects. Thank you to everyone who pitched and to all six of the Dragons.
~ Congratulations to Ben Montgomery who was elected as Disabled Student Delegate at the Better Union Forum.
~ The Better Union Forum approved 6 news societies: Golf, Lacrosse, PR, Marketing, Ultimate Frisbee and Water Polo.
~ We hosted out first International Winter Evening with food, drink and music from The Jammin’ Society. This was also the launch of the International Society.

Our Campaigns
November and December were hectic campaigning months and LSU wants to say a BIG THANKS all the students who took the time to have their voice heard on important student issues from signing our online petition calling for a National Bursary Scheme, travelling to London with us for the National Demo on the 10 Nov or marching through Liverpool on the 8 December– campaign support at National Demo and local day of action in December
We are so excited to be launching our Student Officer Elections for 2011…Could you be the next LSU President?
LSU exists at LJMU to fairly and democratically represent the views of our members – the student body. We aim to bring about positive change to improve both the academic and social side of student life at LJMU. We are run and governed by a group of elected student officers who are students of the university; the union employs members of staff to support the work of the elected student officers.
Every year the Students’ Union runs elections – LJMU students’ vote for the next LSU President and the 3 Vice President’s.
The President is the main officer responsible for the students’ union’s strategies, public profile and communication with University leaders and outside organisations.
All these positions are full time for 12 months and paid a salary of circa £17k. You can take a year out of study or if you graduate this year you can start after you finish your degree.

The Liverpool Futures Forum is the biggest opportunity of the year for students to ask questions to the decision-makers in their university and their union and hold them to account for how they are making the LJMU experience outstanding.

Liverpool Students’ Union President Lily Rumsey will host the Forum which will discuss LSU’s activities so far this year and our plans for the future. We’ll also chair an hour’s question and answer session with Professor Michael Brown, LJMU’s Vice-Chancellor, so that students can hear his thoughts on the future of our University and ask him any questions.
On 31 January 2011 from 16.00 to 19.00 at Parr Street Studios, Parr Street, LIVERPOOL, L1 4JN. We’ll provide free food and drink – you just need to come with ideas.

FEEDBACKwhat do you know?
In the last academic year, the Better University Forum has worked with Jemma, our Vice President of Academic Quality to produce a list of ten changes students would like to see across LJMU to improve the feedback from lecturers on assessments. We’ve since been working with the University to implement these changes for LJMU students.
LSU has been working with LJMU to win positive changes for our students and because of this from the start of this year, the University has made a commitment to deliver four of the objectives across every programme so students will have:
1. advance notice of when feedback will be returned, will be given with the assessment deadline
2. a three week return for feedback on assessed work
3. feedback that always relates to the assessment criteria
4. face-to-face feedback on your first piece of assessed work Every student should see these improvements to assessment and feedback this year, unless your tutor has explained why it won’t be possible.This term, we want to hear about how your feedback has improved: have you noticed these changes and have they made a difference to your education? We’d especially like to hear about some of the
best examples of feedback at LJMU so that we can share them with the rest of the University and showcase the good work. If you feel like your feedback experience isn’t happening as described above, we’d also like to hear from you so that we can help students and staff work together to improve feedback where it isn’t working for students now and to improve for the future.

We are looking to recruit 100 students from Liverpool John Moores University to take part in a survey about attitudes towards cycling to University. Both non-cyclists and cyclists are wanted! The results of the survey will be included in a Masters dissertation for the Institute for Transport Studies. All participants will be entered into a prize draw to win an Apple iPad!
