"To be nobody but myself– in a world which is

doing its best, night and day, to make me

any human being can fight, and never stop

Fighting to Be Saved Alex Svensen

I'll run across the dark valleysAnd fight my way to youClimb up spiraling towers And a slay a beast or twoJust to have you save meFrom the troubles I'm going through

Because all of these battlesLeave me weak and confusedBut when you stand beside meThe sky turns back to blueAnd clears of all the cloudsLeaving a perfect view

And all I want is to be Your brave and perfect knightThat rides up on his horseAnd sparkles in the lightSo I may cast away your fearsAnd shelter you from the night

Don't dream of a princeThat comes and takes you awayBecause you already have the crownJust take my hand todayWe can ride off into the sunsetAnd they'll dream of being us one day

World's WaltzMaria Yamamuro

I raised my head to look outsideand found the sun had lost its shine. The clouds were gray and looked quite furryas the trees shed without hurry.I wished the wind would come backto give the world the movement it lacked.A car goes by and makes a hiss, while everything stays, still, lifeless. I turned around to play a waltzto forget about the world's halt. And soon I heard a raindrop fallthen everything moved, sky and all.I thought it was my imagination, but certainly it was no hallucinationthat the waltz I played in my roommade my body and the scenery--------move.

CourageCaroline LaFollette

Something so largeTaught in time so shortShown in so many waysYet never really recognizedSomething simple, yet complexSo many things, never viewed as so

Courage is what it isBut is it what we say it is?Can it be something simple?Does it have to be heroic? Can it be anything? Is it really something? Is it trying something for the first time?Is it being who you really are?And not what others want you to be?

Taught by someone close and dearThat someone,Who faces her dilemma, like she doesn’t have oneWho knew that faith would get her family through,Even though her time was short.

She knew it came both large and smallAnd knew there were ways to rememberEven if one did not understandShe knew that one dayRather sooner than later

We would begin to understandShe knew that one dayRather later than soonerWe would understand

“Courage is a big wordAnd a big thingButYou can have itYou just have to tryAnd believe.”

My LoveHamilton Gaines

Every time I walk by you,My heart beats for you.I just can’t wait to get my hands on you.I’ve loved you since I was two.

Two of my favorite colors thatYou wear are orange and black. The ripples around your centerSend chills on my back.

As I slowly remove yourJacket and lay it to the side.I share in amazement how perfect isYour shape and size.

Gently I pick you up andMove you toward my face.My mind begins to wonderOf how you might taste.

The creamy chocolate on the outside,And smooth peanut butter within.Just melts my heart away.Oh! How I love my Reese Cup.

Where I’m FromKylie Burton

I am from love turned to hateFrom always loving him to hating every part of himI am from the happy days we spent together(Gay, LaughingIt was fun while it lasted) I am from the late nights we danced together The sillinessThat I still remember As if it will never fade away

I am from the courtroom and wads of tissues From the next marriage I am from the beatings and those stupid “lessons”From another divorce and the pain of healing I am from Church from which I prayed every dayAnd the feeling my life will never be the same again

I am from Samantha and Savannah Caring arms and soothing wordsFrom a piece of my heart I lost To the eyes I thought would never dryUnderneath it allI ended up with a family who loves me dearlyAnd He who watches over me everyday

I am from those memoriesFrom which I learned everything I knowAnd opened my eyes to a whole new world

The Trial Molly Gnagy

My breath turned to a white fog in the night. I turned around to see if I was still being followed. Of course, I was. They were less than half a mile behind me. Unless a miracle happened, I didn’t think I would make it out of there alive. Angry shouts came from the crowd of angry villagers behind me. Even after my trial earlier that morning, they believed me to be a witch. They happened to be right, but why should I tell them that? My long black hair was matted to my face with blood and sweat. My legs were sore from hours of endless running. I didn’t have to run. If I wanted to, all I had to do was say a few simple words and they would all drop dead. But they were only people that were trying to protect themselves from danger. Considering the danger they were protecting themselves from was a 1,362-year-old witch hiding in a fifteen-year-old’s body, I couldn’t really blame them. So I kept running, hoping I would make it out alive without killing anyone in the process.

I had been running for seven hours straight. If I didn’t stop soon, my legs were going to give out. My chest felt as though it was about to burst. I couldn’t run anymore. I felt my legs give out under me. I hit the ground with a loud thump. I tried to stand, but it was no use. I just lay there, waiting for them to take me. I heard their angry shouts grow louder and louder. They were nearly upon me when I heard someone call my name.

“Olive! Olive get up!”

“Luca, what’re you doing here?”

“Trying to make sure you don’t get killed! Get over here!”

I don’t know how, but I scrambled to my feet and joined him in the woods behind some bushes. His sandy-blonde hair was matted to his forehead, his bright blue eyes sparkled. He looked at me with a face full of concern.

“Luca, why are you helping me? Those people are trying to kill me because they think I’m a witch.”

Page 20: the LURE - The Donoho School · Alaska Abhishek Purohit ... Hello to Goodbye Sarah Storey ... nearly upon me when I heard someone call my name. “Olive!

21

“I don’t believe them.”

“Well, you should. They’re right.”

With the rest of them, I could keep my secret. But with Luca, it was different. I don’t think I could’ve kept my secret from him for long even if I had wanted to. He stared at me for a moment, his expression impossible to read. When he spoke, there was a hint of a challenge in his voice.

“I can’t believe that.”

I couldn’t believe how calm he was being about this. If I had told anyone else that I was a witch, they would’ve called me a work of the devil and then ran away screaming. Yet, here he was, staring at me as though I was just any other girl. I realized he was waiting for me to prove I was a witch, so I held out my hand, closed my eyes, and recited the simplest spell I could think of.

“Lieta Flamera.”

When I opened my eyes I was pleased to find a small flame dancing on the palm of my hand. Luca stared into the flame, his mouth hanging open. I closed my hand and the flame went out. Luca looked up at me, his voice barely above a whisper.

“Oh. My. God.”

“Yeah, this would usually be the part where you go find the executioner and have my head cut off.”

He looked at me as though I were insane.

“Why would I do that?”

“Because I’m a witch. You know, a ‘work of the devil.’”

“First of all, you’re not a work of the devil, no matter what those people say. Second, I don’t really care if you’re a witch. It’s not like you’re some demon whose only goal in life is to kill everyone.”

“You don’t know that.”

“But I’ve known you for twelve years. Considering you won’t even kill a mosquito, I’m pretty sure that your goal isn’t to kill everyone.”

Page 21: the LURE - The Donoho School · Alaska Abhishek Purohit ... Hello to Goodbye Sarah Storey ... nearly upon me when I heard someone call my name. “Olive!

22

“Maybe it is.”

“Are you saying you want me to have you beheaded?”

“No.”

“Then I suggest you hush and follow me. And try not to make any noise. You never know who could be living in

these woods.”

I followed him through the maze of trees. We walked for hours in silence. The only sound came from the cold wind whistling through the air. My heart beat faster with every step that we took. The only thing I could think of was the villagers finding us and killing us both. Being a witch was a crime, helping a witch was almost as bad. He was putting his life in danger just by standing next to me. If they found out he was helping me, he wouldn’t survive two seconds

“Olive, do you hear that?”

“Hear what?”

“Listen.”

For a moment, I didn’t hear anything. Then, I heard the shouts. I saw the flames of the torches coming up the road that was only a few feet to our right. I froze. Images of fire and burning bodies filled my mind. I saw Luca tied to a post, his body being set on fire. I heard his screams of pain mixed with my own. Luca was yelling at me to follow him into the bushes, but I barely heard him. I couldn’t think, couldn’t move, couldn’t even breathe. I just stood there, frozen. If I didn’t move soon, they would find me. But there was nothing I could do. No matter what I did, I couldn’t move. After a minute, I felt a pair of cold hands wrap around my arm. They dragged me into the street where a crowd of people circled around me. I saw the man lift a knife to my neck. I felt the pressure of its blade pressed against my skin, and a moment later, my life was over.

It Keeps Me AwakeMary Elizabeth Mathison

Bottled-up emotions Held tightly by the clouds.Slowly, they're releasedAnd the sky is crying.Dark and mysterious, they fall.Multiple tearsLanding on unforgiving, black asphalt. They paint the sky shades of gray.Dismal and sad it seemsBut no.These gentle tears create lifeAs they fall,They create beauty.

To some people,Rain may be just rain;Look closely,And you'll find a reflection.A small glimmer of hope.Of strength. For the days that seem unstoppable.

Boom. The shrapnel kisses my skinAnd breaks me to piecesI hope this is not the end

I hear my bodyFranticly trying to heal meIt's never seen a case like thisThe explosion must have been within

But through the chaos And unmuffled by the painA sweet voice comforts meAnd causes the explosion again

My heart ignites And my veins transport the flameI open my eyes and lookBut you're already gone again

SALVATIONAshleigh Nunnally

We wait for the day,We wait for the night,When all will stare,In amazement and awe,When all shall be still.

And all shall be calm,When everyone shall care,Everyone will see,How brother and sister should be,

So, when the day comes,Humanity will be ready. For the time, that all will be still,And Salvation will come.

MinnowsRichard Bateman

The other day I saw a strange displayA group of minnows dartingDancing in irrational waysGrouped together like the best of friendsOccupied in their strange rituals

I sat to watch them for a time Wondering what they might doBut for lifetimes they stayed near one little rockIn one corner of a glorious tank

They never cared to exploreThe rest of their glorious homeNo single one separated from the packTo enjoy the rest of their cisternThey stayed tight in their solemn pirouetteNot caring about the surrounding world

Foolish minnows one might sayThey know not what lies around themBut how different are some among the indictersFrom our fish-minded friends

People who live in their own little worldAnd only relate to their packThose who never form themselvesBut are formed by their brothersSlaves of the clan

Page 31: the LURE - The Donoho School · Alaska Abhishek Purohit ... Hello to Goodbye Sarah Storey ... nearly upon me when I heard someone call my name. “Olive!

32

So urge the other fish in the tankMinnows be free from the bonds of your schoolAnd come to enjoy the seaThink for yourselves and you will findA happier world with open armsGo for your dreams and strive for your goals Not the goals of your troupe

Many are out there absorbed in their comradesKnowing not the things they could doIf they formed their own thoughts into fish of their ownAnd swam to a meaningful place

The Love of the GameAnna Brooke Payne

Before the gameThe nerves invade your bodyLike a deadly disease. You can’t help it but, Thoughts fly through your head Quicker that an animal Running from its prey.

When you hear The first shrill of the whistleAll of these thoughts and feelings,Vanish.

You start to play. You can hear the voice Of your coach in your head,Almost as if it were your own,Telling you every move to make.

As you are on the court The passion for the gameBurns as deep as Earth’s coreInside of you.

You put all of yourself into it,Like an artist and his masterpiece. You suffer throughThe bruises and injuries,But you do it,For the love of the game.

What is Love?Lesli Williams

I can’t tell you what love is…Because I don’t know. But,I can tell you what it’s not.Love isn’t supposed to be a game,Like chance.Love isn’t supposed to be quick and painful,Like a bee sting. If I had to say what love is…I would say that love should be permanent and long-lasting,Like a sharpie.Love should be comforting,Like hot chocolate on a cold winter’s night. And love should be healing,

like the thread that stitches together tears in clothes.

The Optimistic King Alex Svensen

Waving to the insultersBowing to the prosecutorsShaking hands with the those that wouldn't lend oneAnd greeting my executionerI say goodbye to such a lovely worldAnd smile as I hear the crowd's hateful wordsAs they wave farewell with their torches and pitchforksWho wouldn't at such a massive attendance?I lay my head down for a little restA big day ahead so I thought it’d be bestI chat with my friend as he sharpens his bladeAnd asks for just a little off the top So you can't tell much of a changeBecause I have a great big party Planned for the evening and you’re welcome if you want to come to the venue But the fellow declined with a slight laughAnd I was rather insulted at thatBut I guessed he just didn't know what he was missingAnd at that my head was rolling as I laughed at his stupidity

Love Is the PanaceaWill Fiorella

There is a cure,For the pain you bear.It eludes a man, year after year. You really need not strike a deal.

The cure for the painexists on this earth as love.It isn't a pill, or a plant, from those, you must refrain.

It isn't a rope,and it isn't a blade .This isn't a joke,just have hope

fall in love, let your heart glidegraceful as a dove,

For when your heart-dove settles downand builds a home in the branch of a tree.It can hatch its eggsand show the chicks (your mind) to be free

Hanging onChandler Collins

All of my hope has been stripped away,Torn by the memories of loved ones lost,Left to burn,Our hope is gone,We are nothing more than dogs to these people.

They don’t care about who we are,What we live for,Only for the star on my chest,And the name of my family.

What has happened to this man?To lead him to such insanityThe pain and suffering he has brought me,Or the pain and suffering brought by the people sent to find me.

We have nothing more to live for,Our religion is all we have.We have lost all hope,All of our dignity and pride,Our family and friends,Sent to die.

They take us away,One by one,The pain and suffering,Of watching them leave,It tears at my heart.

We are trapped,-Nowhere to turn,We have nothing left,Our joy is lost.

Page 45: the LURE - The Donoho School · Alaska Abhishek Purohit ... Hello to Goodbye Sarah Storey ... nearly upon me when I heard someone call my name. “Olive!

46

Day after day,We work on and on,Our only reward,-The sweet peace of death letting us finally leave this wretched world and the camp that they put us in.

They can take away our lives,Our family and friends. All we have left is our religion,And the hope that death will come sooner.

These people,Sent to take our lives,Try to take all that is dear to us,But we will never break.

We are a strong people,Firm in what we believe in,That will never change.

They take away everyone that is not german. For what reason? Why do six million jews have to die? What is so different?

They put is into chambers filled with gas,-Like Hitler’s army,Unescapable and never-ending.They burn away our souls,But now we are in a better place.

The darkness closing in around us,Taking us away from here,Finally death has come,And evil shall live in our lives no more.

She Hurts Me More Than AnythingZachary St. Clair

Everyday, you pass by meBarely more than a glance. It seems that you don’t care for me,But still I take the chance. Loving someone has ended badly before,But I can tell this girl’s different. My heart hasn’t healed: fresh are my sores,Yet my feelings stay consistent. Everyday, I always prayThat I will receive your “yes.”And everyday, the price I payIs rejection and sadness. I see you two day in, day out—It’s obvious it wasn’t meant to be.And yet, you still ignore your doubts. The one you should be with is me. How ironic, that you who brings me joyAlso whips me back and forth. My heart, it seems, is your toy,And you can’t decide whether South or North. People try to play it downAnd say there’s more fish in the sea,But I say my fish is found. You’re the only one it could be.

To some it seems of little worth,This problem of the heart. There are bigger problems on Earth,Lack of food and water to start. But I say to them that this equals no home,And it is worse than nothing to eat.For she is my shelter and when I’m alone,My thoughts of her deprive me of sleep. I am a man, and I won’t cryFor you, my puppeteer. All I can do is wait and tryTo save you from more tears. Yes, I will wait and waitFor you to make up your mind.I hope this issue soon abates,But please don’t waste my time. Will you stay with him—give me more heartbreak?Inspire more of my poetry?Or will you realize for heaven’s sake,That I would never hurt thee? Cut me and punch me! Look! I will bleed,Though they hardly even sting.Compared to me you don’t look at me,That hurts more than anything.

Breaking Mary Elizabeth Mathison

She thought she was stronger.Thought she could handle it.But she learned,She's not so tough. She's slowly breaking.

She looks into those eyes. The eyes she once foundInviting,Loving,Caring. But she was wrong.Where love should be there's hate. She thought she loved youBut now she knowsYou're everything she never wanted.

Now, because of you,She's this.A fragile little girl.Too many emotions on her heart.Too many tears in her eyes. Some days, she wants to disappear. She feels like dying, so sick of crying.

She trembles.Small.Helpless.Hopeless.Awake for daysShe collapses.

She doesn't know what she's doing anymore. She feels soAlone. She locks her bedroom doorFalls to the bed that brought comfort.Once upon a time.

With no one left to run to,She lies there. Her heart beating hard against her chest.Wanting out.Wanting to run away.Tears fall silently to the pillow.Yet again.

Getting up,She walks to the mirror.Looks at her reflectionSees a girlStanding thereBright streaks streaming down her face. All gone but those eyes. She wonders where that girl went. She sinks to the floor,Curls into herselfAnd prays for the day That she'll be free.

Hello to Goodbye Sarah Storey

I sit silently,Preparing to say my final goodbye,Goodbye to what I had always known as home,Hello to a new adventure.Scared,Excited,Nervous,Millions of emotions racing through my small body,Tears, threatening to leap out of my eyes,I take my last look at my already packed room that held years of memories,At the backyard that took me to Japan, Africa, and England, where I fought off spies and aliens.  Goodbye to the stairs I raced up daily,To the playroom that held all my toys,To the porch where my friends and I sang and danced,To my parents room where the bad guys couldn’t reach,To my favorite hiding places,To the basement where I spent many afternoons playing with dolls,To the living room I spent hours watching “Rugrats” and “Dragon Tales.” Everywhere,Boxes scattered, with labels,Holding our past, what summed up our lives.

I say goodbye before I leave,Before they pack it all away. Slowly,I walk out the door,The butterflies in my stomach wake up from their long rest, and quickly take flight,As I look ahead to my new adventure,My new home,My new friends,My new life,I say hello to goodbye.

The Turning BackElizabeth Smith

As you rise from sleep and into your dayReflect on how you became this wayYour stance, your voice, your dreams and mindSee your past slowly unwind

Remember your forgotten childhoodAll the dreams you had, both ridiculous and goodRemember the parents you hid behind when you were shyThe same parents are now waving goodbye

Your titles have been given and your true dreams have been foundYour worlds have been created and you’re figuring out where you’re boundYour silhouette that your fans will watch walk awayIs becoming more prominent with each passing day

Your back is turning and you can’t be afraidYou have no limits except the ones you’ve madeHave you made the right decisions? Soon you’ll see. Before you turn you back: are you who you wanted to be?
