LYMINGE A HISTORY SHOPS 1930-1940 CHAPTER 1

1 - 20

At Christmas there used to be a fat stock show. They used to put bigmarquees up in the fields there, massive big marquees. And all the animalswould be there, for show, you see and that was the fat stock show. Andthen the pub used to do a roaring trade up there then, Coach & Horses, and there was an annexe on the side, there. They used to use it for mealsand things. And that was all to do with the market you see.B F: Yes, I remember many a time when I worked at the Co-op, the generalmanager, from Folkestone, used to come up and buy eggs from the market. And we had to take them up to the shop to pack and we had over athousand dozen eggs to pack ... Many a, many a time us school boys, especially when there has been a sale down here, we helped drive sheep infrom different places.M C: (How often was the market?) Once a week, Monday was market day. …after it closed down they had flower shows ... in there. Lyminge FlowerShow used to be in the sheds.

District Councillors Update - September 2019 We have written before about the excellent ‘No Use Empty project’. Launched in 2005 by KCC it has provided interest free loans to owners to bring empty properties back into use as homes and when the money is repaid it is recycled to deliver more schemes. So far 5,911 long-term empty properties have been brought back into use across Kent all of them meeting the ‘decent home’ standard. Long-term empty means those dwellings that have been unoccupied or substantially unfurnished for over six months. They are often a blight on the neighbourhood attracting crime and anti-social behaviour and are of course ‘No Use Empty’. However, it’s precisely because they are such ‘difficult’ properties that owners find it difficult to raise funds to renovate them and this is why the scheme was created.

The largest number of empty homes is in East Kent and since 2016, Folkestone & Hythe District Council has joined with KCC to ‘turbo charge’ the No Use Empty scheme with £300,000 per year (totalling £2.1m to date) to tackle some of the larger and more challenging projects in the district.

Now the scheme is being extended to include commercial properties with £1 million funding from the South East Local Enterprise Partnership. This money will be used to help redevelop eight commercial units and 28 residential units above them in the town centres of Dover, Folkestone and Thanet by March 2022. You can find out more about the scheme at www.no-use-empty.org.uk It’s a great initiative that provides more homes and improves lives for everyone in the neighbourhood.

Susan was invited to present the prizes at the Rhodes Minnis Flower Show on 03 August which saw an increase of 30 entries this year and high standards across all categories. Susan and Jenny together with both Lyminge and Elham Parish Councils and Stuart Peall their North Downs East District Councillor colleague have all joined together to support Rhodes Minnis Village Hall fund a defibrillator which we hope will soon be in place.

Both Jenny and Susan attended the Parish Council Meeting in Postling on 31 July and Susan has, as usual helped with Speedwatch in Rhodes Minnis and Etchinghill.

We are both very pleased at the progress made by Pathways to the Past and the new playpark project for Tayne Field. If there are other projects you would like us to support with our ward member grants, do please get in touch.

Lyminge Hand Bells The Lyminge hand bell ringers have been playing in and around Lyminge for well over 25 years. We love to attend fetes and local private celebrations throughout the year so if you think the sound of hand bells would suit a special occasion you are planning, then please contact us. We have an increasingly wide selection of music to choose from or just leave it to us.

All we require at the venue is a large table for our bells and music, room for up to 11 players and a minimum donation of £50 for our current charity, the Nepali Children’s’ Trust. A small contribution to travelling costs is also appreciated if we have to travel more than 5 miles from Lyminge. Please provide plenty of advance notice. Want more info or make a booking? Please contact: Ro Edmond on 863201 or email [email protected]

Letters to the Editor...... PLEASE, PLEASE look after our trees...We are very privileged to live in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (ANOB). Our trees and hedgerows, wild spaces and native plants, all form a rich part of the ecosystem, helping to reduce our carbon footprint, cleaning the air and pumping oxygen back into the atmosphere. However, more recently trees are being frequently cut down, sometimes with little thought for our children’s future. If we live in a conservation area, it is unlawful to prune or remove trees with trunks over 7.5cm to 10cm, measured at 1.5 metres from the ground, or to remove their branches, or to damage ancient hedgerows without giving notice to the local authority for permission at least 6 weeks in advance. Non-compliance can lead to prosecution and unlimited fines, depending on the damage done. Perhaps we should consider these rules being introduced into our area – our AONB.It’s always good to hear about tree-planting projects, but those saplings cannot take the place of mature trees for many years and need our protection. It is vital that we stop this destruction. Both the District Council and our Parish Council have a statutory duty to protect the trees in an AONB. If you are aware of anyone destroying trees or hedgerows, please telephone the District Council’s team on 01303 853538 or ask a Parish Councillor to intervene.Yours, Name and address supplied

Pathways to the PastExploring the Legacy of Ethelburga

The dig is now over and it has been a huge success. We have had lots of volunteers involved, lots of people have visited the site throughout the week making good use of the viewing platform, and we have had great attendance at the weekly site tours given by Gabor Thomas. We have answered pretty well all the questions we had about Canon Jenkins’ dig, corrected his inventions and defined with great clarity not only that we have a 7th Century Anglo-Saxon church in Lyminge, but also what it looked like.

We can now say with certainty that we have one of the earliest churches built in England following the arrival of St Augustine to begin the conversion of the English to Christianity. Combined with all the other archaeology discovered over the past decade, this makes the village of genuine international significance. We will now begin work on communicating the results of the dig through publications. We will also be reinstating the paths in the churchyard and implementing the disabled access to the church via the north door, as planned. The project will also continue with a programme of community activities designed to raise awareness and understanding of our amazing historic environment. Those of you who attended the public meetings in May will already be aware of our plans. We are now in the process of appointing a Community Engagement Manager who will take responsibility for driving this forward over the remainder of the project to the end of 2020. If you have any ideas for suitable activities, please do let us know as we are looking for proposals. We are still fund-raising and we still need to find funding for the creation of the digital 3D reconstructions of the church throughout its 1,400 year history. If you wish to help us make this a reality, please donate through our crowd-funding website at https://www.gofundme.com/pathways-to-the-past. Please remember to tick the Gift Aid box if you are a UK taxpayer. This will increase the value of your gift by 25% at no cost to you.If you want to keep up to date with the project in real time, then follow us on our blog at https://geopaethas.com. If you have any questions about the project, please contact Liz Coleman, Administrator at [email protected] or 863197 or Rob Baldwin Project Manager at [email protected].

BADGERS BRIDGE NURSERY“ Bridging the indoor and outdoor learning environment for

children in their Early Years”Badgers Bridge is set in the idyllic countryside of Postling, just outside Lyminge. We are a small and friendly Preschool who blend the Montessori principles with the outdoor learning ethos.

We were awarded Outstanding by Ofsted in 2018 in every area. This is a real achievement and we are really proud of the staff who work tirelessly to provide a stimulating and caring environment for the children of Badgers Bridge.

The inspector was particularly impressed with our Forest School. “Children enjoy limitless opportunities to explore, investigate and work together in the natural woodland environment. Staff skilfully inspire children to develop a significant understanding of the world in which they live”. “......exemplary relationships between staff provide excellent role models for children and promote high standards of behaviour. Children make outstanding progress during their time at the nursery”.

We are filling up fast and only have 3 spaces available. So please call or email us:.Email : [email protected] Website : www.badgersbridge.co.uk Tel : 01303 862951

Lyminge Methodist Church said farewell to Deacon Carys Woodley at a service on 28th July. [Attended by the whole South Kent Circuit of the Methodist Church.] She was presented with the picture that she is holding in the photograph above.

Lyminge Historical Society enjoyed an excellent summer outing to Whitstable on 18th July.

The 22 members were split into 2 groups and in the morning one group had a guided tour of the town and then a visit to the museum in the afternoon. The other group did things the other way round, and then all met up again for an afternoon tea at the Tudor Tea Rooms. This was

the first tour that the Whitstable volunteer team had organised and all agreed that they could

not have been looked after better !
