The new Powerhouse museum in Parramatta will be bigger and better than anything that NSW has ever seen and will rival global icons such as the London Science Museum and the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.

Western Sydney will be home to the largest museum in NSW built for one of Australia’s fastest growing regions. The new Powerhouse museum will provide the community with knowledge and hands-on experience of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics).

Internationally, Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS) is acknowledged for the calibre of its collection which spans history, science, technology, design, industry, decorative arts, music, transport and space exploration.

The new Powerhouse museum offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a purpose-built museum to welcome people from across NSW and around the world to experience the MAAS collection.

New interactive exhibits and environments will allow visitors to explore and experience the museum’s rich collection and it will enable them to access far more of the collection.

BenefitsArts and culture are key contributors to our economy adding over $16.3 billion to the Gross State Product in 2016-17. A diverse arts and cultural sector makes NSW an even better place to live, work and visit.

The new Powerhouse museum in Parramatta will:

› be a significant cultural facility for Australia’s fastest growing and most diverse population

› deliver world-class opportunities for education and research

Parramatta Arts and Cultural Precinct

The new Powerhouse museum in Parramatta, alongside a revamped Riverside Theatres performing arts centre, will support a growing and diverse population in Sydney’s central city.

The Parramatta Arts and Cultural Precinct will introduce new experiences and public spaces along Parramatta’s river foreshore.

Like London’s Here East cultural precinct and Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District, Parramatta’s newest cultural precinct will promote the value of the arts.

An international design competition for the new museum and masterplanning for the precinct will respond to the location and Parramatta’s identity, and enliven community experiences.

Interactive and Touring Exhibitions

The MAAS collection will be interpreted for contemporary audiences, putting more of the collection on display and drawing out illustrations of the past, present and future. The museum will offer immersive and interactive environments with advanced digital and state-of-the-art technologies providing hands-on experiences that explore innovation, creativity and ingenuity.

Major international partnerships will bring the very best of the world to Sydney, building on existing partnerships which have seen MAAS present exemplary exhibitions from renowned international institutions such as the Smithsonian Institution, the Science Museum in London and the British Museum.

Planetarium

NSW’s first major planetarium will offer a space to explore a whole new world. Larger than any planetarium in Australia at over 30m wide, this full-dome experience will be fitted out with ultra-high-resolution 3D video complemented by multi-channel immersive audio, making it the most advanced visualisation environment in Australia. Beyond astronomy, this next-generation planetarium supports visualisation for big data, live video links from across the globe, new film, art and creative commissions and the chance to interactively explore 3D imaged objects from the MAAS collection.

Children’s Spaces

The new Powerhouse museum in Parramatta will encourage natural curiosity and intergenerational experiences. Family-focused spaces will include Australia’s first dedicated play and learning environment devoted to STEAM. It will create intergenerational experiences for families and our youngest visitors, with spaces for workshops, performances and exploration.

Education Labs

New education spaces will be available for the next generation of students to build 21st century literacies in STEAM. It will be a place to innovate through co-creation and collaboration whether you are a designer, tinkerer or dreamer. The labs will draw out everyone’s creativity. With access to experts, education and learning studios, in-residency programs, and dedicated spaces for making—this is a place of production. Through partnerships with the education sector, the labs deliver new learning experiences both in the museum and across NSW.

Museums Discovery Centre

A significant upgrade to the Museums Discovery Centre at Castle Hill will display items for the community to access and explore, offering a unique opportunity to learn about museum collections and conservation of Australia’s past.

The expanded custom-built storage and collection care spaces (35% increase, adding over 5,000 sqm), will provide capacity for continued care of the state’s collections.

Community and sector consultation on development of new exhibits, programs and experiences 2018-2023

Ultimo Creative Industries PrecinctFollowing the Powerhouse’s relocation to Parramatta, the Government plans to retain a creative industries presence at Ultimo.

A creative industries precinct is critical to cementing Sydney’s reputation as Australia’s cultural capital while investing in one of the fastest growing economic sectors for the state. Like Singapore’s cultural district and New York’s Meatpacking District, Australia’s foremost creative industries precinct would see enhanced public space and pedestrian connections, with the aim of making a new global home for fashion, design and cultural exchange in Ultimo.

Design and fashion museum

For almost 30 years the Powerhouse museum has celebrated innovation and creation. Building on that legacy, a planned new design and fashion museum would showcase the MAAS collection celebrating the best of Australian and international practice across design, fashion, creativity and architecture.

A new design and fashion museum would revitalise NSW’s cultural offering with dedicated space for all aspects of design and fashion.

A new theatre in Ultimo

Filling a critical gap in Sydney’s cultural infrastructure, a planned new 1500-seat Broadway-style theatre would provide a state-of-the-art performance space for musicals, live music and screen-based programming. A new theatre would heighten Sydney’s international competitiveness for first-run major touring musicals and theatrical productions. The new theatre would be funded, built and run by a commercial operator, selected through an open competitive process.
