Letter from Kathryn
November is a month of remembering.
One of the current concerns of the Church Council is those who have difficulty in remembering, people who have dementia.
Dementia has become something that many people fear, not being able to remember who we are hits at our sense of identity. If I can’t remember who I am, am I still me? If the
person I love as partner, parent, friend no longer remembers me, does that end our relationship?
I’m hoping that, in Spring, Dr Helen Reid will come and lead a book group on “Dementia. Living in the Memories of God” by
John Swinton. This phrase from the book has stayed with me: “dementia does not change the nature of love and what is God-breathed about us.”
We cannot deny the deep suffering that dementia can bring in its wake but in and amongst the horror of forgetting is the
deeper promise of not being forgotten by God. “If God knew us when we were in the womb (Psalm 139) and if God has plans for us to prosper, then neurological decline cannot
separate us from the love of God”.
Here in Oakwood Church we are looking to see how those who may become strangers through the onset of dementia can continue to be welcomed as friends. A small group is being set
up to look at resources and make recommendations to the Church Council for how we might need to do things a little differently. If you’re interested in being part of the group
please contact me (0113 2256702).
This month, our communal remembering as church include those who have given their lives in war, those close to us who have died, and obeying the commandment of Jesus; “do this in
memory of me” as we share together in communion marking the great mystery of his death and resurrection.

A Note from Haydon
My name is Haydon Cooper and I have organised the coffee morning advertised opposite as part of the World’s Biggest
Coffee Morning.
The reason I have been motivated to do this is because as many of you know my mum, Debra, has cancer and, without the support of Macmillan, it would have made her journey
much more difficult.
They have helped her keep positive throughout her treatment and still provide her with support as her treatment continues.
I hope you can come along to join us and help us to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Please join us, if you can, at our lunch after the morning service at 12.30 on Sunday 5 November
to raise money for Methodist Homes for the Aged
You'll be able to enjoy homemade soup, sandwiches
and cake.
Please sign up on the sheet on the noticeboard at the back of Church so that we have an idea of numbers.

Paul and I have been thinking about starting a new House Group for some time - our new home may be a coincidence but the time is now right!
It will be held on a regular evening probably once a fortnight
but we are having a planning meeting Monday 30 October at 17.30 (see one of us for address and to discuss details).
We hope it will be a place of warm fellowship, to worship together and to grow in faith. Anybody and everybody is welcome. If you haven't been to a house group or it was a
long time ago may I encourage you to come along.
For me house group has been a valuable space in a busy week to reflect, listen, think and to ask those questions about the Bible or life in general that I might not discuss elsewhere; and
to support one another and, sometimes, make long term friends. It can be a challenging place or a restful place.
Tea and biscuits guaranteed!
Charlotte and Paul
Our
Every Monday during
term time from 10.30 until 12.00
The Monday Cafe is a great place to meet your friends and catch up and make new
ones. Everyone is welcome.
We have homemade cakes, buttered
toasted tea cakes and, by special request, we have added delicious bacon butties.
We hope you are able to join us.

USED STAMPS RAISE THOUSANDS!
We have been involved and supported Hearing Dogs for the
Deaf for many years by saving used stamps which help to raise money for their work.
Just cut round stamps (make sure you leave a border), then bring them to Church, put them in the plastic wallet on the charity
noticeboard or the noticeboard in the back porch. I will collect them and then send them to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.
Every stamp helps and they add up to so much.
Enjoy recycling your stamps, knowing the impact you are making by helping to train a hearing dog which will change a deaf person’s life.
Thank you - Martin Shipley
Meeting Point is looking to appoint a Community Connect Project Worker to develop further the work

Church Family News
Congratulations from the Church family to Alison and Peter on their marriage in September and to Shanthi and Roger on their recent wedding anniversary.
We continue to hold in prayer Debra, Joyce and Pauline.
May the Lord bless you all and give you peace as you continue to recuperate.

following her death. We remember Rea with love and gratitude for her service to Ladywood and Roundhay Methodist Church as Leader of the Beginners Section of
the Sunday School, member of the Walkers Group, the Ladies' groups and a fundraiser for Mission. Rea was also in the Drama Group and some will remember her as
a wonderful friend.
We send our sympathy to Richard Norton on the death of his wife, Elizabeth and to their family.
Every blessing to the Church family, especially those mentioned by name; may our friendship and support for
one another grow as we share the love of Jesus.

MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK

Time is flying by at Roundhay St John's and the children and staff have had a fabulous and busy autumn term so far. In our
RE lessons we have been learning, reflecting and asking challenging questions.
In Year 1 we have been thinking about the word 'special' and
learning about Mary Jones. She worked and saved for six years (longer than some of these children have been alive!) to buy her precious bible.
In Year 2 we have been hearing about Joseph and tackling
issues of jealousy and sibling rivalry!
In Year 3 we have been learning about Jesus' early life and reflecting on what we think he is famous for.
In Year 4 we have been retelling the parable of the Good
Samaritan and reflecting on how this story is as important today as it has ever been. We have been asking who is our neighbour and how can we make a difference?
In Year 5 we have been learning about the church and have
designed surveys to discover why people go to church. We are looking forward to learning about inspirational sports stars whose faith and church have changed their lives.
Finally, in Year 6 we have been studying the bible and looking at evidence for its validity and its continuing relevance in the modern world.
With best wishes from all at Roundhay St. John's.

HARVEST OF TALENTS FOR
It's the time of year again when we ask you to offer
your talents.
Here's how it works.
▪ Simply make an offer (eg baking, gardening, window cleaning, car wash, baby sitting, trip out
etc).
▪ Write your offer on the sheets provided in the New Room (include your name and telephone number
please).
▪ Then wait for the bids to come in - which should be written in the end columns of the sheets, again with name and telephone number.
▪ When the deadline for the bids arrives, Sunday 19
November, both the person who offered their talent and the bidder will receive a sheet (allowing
you to liaise with each other).
Last year we raised over £500, all down to the people who donated their offers and to the people who bid the highest for them.
It doesn't matter whether you are young or old so please help us support MHA.
THANK YOU - MARTIN SHIPLEY

Our November Big Blue Bin Donations will go to
St George's Crypt Care Centre
St George’s Crypt provides award winning 24/7 emergency accommodation. A warm and cheerful welcome awaits those
who attend St George’s Crypt, who provide 9,855 nights of accommodation each year for those who find themselves homeless or rough sleeping. Three meals a day, showers,
clothing, somewhere safe and warm to stay, are just some of the provisions we make available.
St George’s Crypt is outcome focussed when it comes to finding accommodation, support planning with the resident
decides on what accommodation is suitable for the resident. We are pleased to be working with Leeds City Council's no second night out strategy and we are also thrilled to be
working with the NHS supporting those who are being released from hospital who are homeless.
They believe:
• That by demonstrating the love of Christ in a caring, practical way, lives can be transformed, regardless of people’s circumstances.
They aim:
• To meet the basic needs of everyone in a safe, non-judgmental and caring environment.
• To support people who are living on the streets into finding
accommodation. • To help people gain skills and confidence so that they can
take an active role in their futures.
• To be good stewards of all that we receive in an open and transparent manner.
• To enable people to make positive choices in their lifestyle
by accessing employment and freedom from addiction. • To engage with local communities by identifying
opportunities to share the Crypt’s resources. • To find the most appropriate solutions by creating effective
partnerships across the city.
14
They offer: • Care, compassion and hope.
• 40 bed spaces, 365 days a year, covering our three projects; Faith Lodge, Regent Terrace and the emergency Overnight Centre.
• Immediate practical support in terms of getting fed, cleaned up and clothed.
• Opportunities to gain skills, self-confidence and a sense of
achievement. • A place in which people can choose to change. • Prayer, support and initial counselling.
If you would like to help St George's work through donations of toiletries, beverages and non-perishable food please leave your donation(s) in the Big Blue Bin in the porch at Church
during November.
Many thanks

Thinking about
?
Both the Methodist and the Anglican Church offer confirmation for young people and adults to make a personal commitment
to following Jesus. This means taking up for oneself the promises made by Godparents at baptism. Baptism with confirmation is also offered to any adults who, for whatever
reason, were not baptised as children but now want to make a public declaration of faith in Jesus.
Bishop Nick will join George and Kathryn on Sunday 3 December for our Oakwood Confirmation service.
In preparation for confirmation, we will be offering both adult
and young people’s confirmation classes.
If you are interested, please contact Kathryn or George for an informal conversation.

2017
I am currently organising the Nativity which is to be part of the morning service on 17 December.
This year it will be quite a bit different and I need to compile a list of about 24 adults who would play a part in the Nativity.
We will begin our practices with the children on
Sundays 19 and 26 November and Sunday 3 December
(during Junior Church time), Saturdays 2 and 16 December 14.00 to 16.00 and
Saturday 9 December 12.00 to 14.00.
Adults will be welcome to come to any of these practices to get a feel for what will be involved.
I anticipate that there will only be a
need to have one practice with the adults which we can
arrange a convenient date for during early December, before
the dress rehearsal with the children on 16 December.
Could you let me know ASAP if you are willing and available to be part of this ambitious venture so that I can complete writing the play?
Many thanks, Anne Kirkland

WYDAN is offering beds again for those male asylum seekers who
might otherwise find themselves on the streets in the coldest part
of the year. Churches Together in Gipton and Oakwood have
offered to host the week beginning Monday 5 February. Evening
meals are offered at Gipton Methodist Church and sleeping
arrangements and breakfast in the Church of the Epiphany.
Volunteers are drawn from Oakwood Church, Epiphany, Gipton
Methodist and St Nicholas Roman Catholic Church along with
other individuals who wish to help.
Volunteer roles include preparing supper, welcoming and chatting,
sleeping over and serving breakfast. If you’re interested, watch
out for information on the noticeboard in Oakwood Church and
emails. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact
Kathryn (email [email protected]).
Some quotes from volunteers last year:
“I learned about the asylum system and was very humbled by
the positive attitude and determination of our guests".
“I gained much more than I put in. It’s shocking to think that by
simply being born in a different country, it could be my family
going through the same terrible experience.”
And from a guest:
“This experience has given me hope. Through meeting people
and having really interesting conversations I've learned so much.
It has helped me psychologically and I feel much better.”
Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervour, serving
the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or
sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of
God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with
words or speech but with actions and in truth.

DO WE CARE ABOUT IT?
Almost 700 people in Leeds will die this year from illnesses
related to air pollution. Regionally, Leeds is a hotspot for air
pollution in Yorkshire and nationally the third worst polluted city
in UK. On 26 and 27 October 26 Leeds Climate Commission held
a Climathon.
Leeds Climate Commission is a citywide organisation with a
membership drawn from over 30 key public, private and third
sector organisations. Initially it was led by the University of Leeds
and Leeds City Council to create a low carbon, climate change
resistant city and to mirror the strategic priorities of the UK
Committee on Climate Change (UKCCC) at a city scale.
The Bible assumes that all of creation is God's temple and God is
in the holy of holies in heaven and that we are his image on
earth, meant to manifest and channel his presence. So, all of life
is meant to reflect or refract the light of God into our complex
world in all that we do, including science.
For someone like myself who has spend nearly the whole of his
life doing a branch of mathematical physics called climatology,
that is a very challenging situation. Our image of God is really
about how we represent God in the world. I understand now,
what Jesus meant in the parable of the sheep and the goats when
he said "if you did it to the least one of these you did it to me",
because each one is representing God. So, you do it to an image
of God, and you do it to God.
The Proverbs have this saying that "anyone who abuses the poor
insults their maker" - that's an image of God idea too. The Bible
simply understands that humans represent God in the world.
Either we do it well, or we do it badly. If we do it very badly, we
shut off the world from God's presence.
The UK Disasters Emergency Committee report that this year the
environmental crises around the world have already been
devastating. We are probably seeing one of the largest
movements of people in decades, most of them are women and
children - and without food, clean water, sanitation and shelter,
their lives are in danger.

Hosting with HOSTUK 2017
Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby
some have entertained angels unawares. Hebrews 13:2
How true such advice can be. Hospitality is an equal
partnership, the feel-good factor of offering it and the delight in receiving it.
HOST UK is a charity whose mission is to give a welcome to international students in British homes for friendship and cultural exchange. Whilst not a faith-based charity, it values
the offers of hospitality that result from awareness-raising in Churches through parish news and word of mouth.
If you are unable to travel abroad, have “abroad” come to you! Our students are both curious and fascinated by our traditions and happy to fully participate in everyday life. If you have a
curiosity about exotic places, or desire to improve a second language, or want your children to encounter those of other cultures and countries, we can offer all of this. Our
international students bring something really special to such a visit and experiences become treasured memories for all and forever.
Whilst we operate all year-round Christmas or New Year is an
especially valuable time to enjoy welcoming guests into your home.
Consider what faces the international student this Christmas; a lonely hall of residence compounded with the uncertainty of their welcome from a Brexiting Britain. They may also be from
a country experiencing conflict or natural disaster and if none of this applies, then they are invariably far from home, family and loved ones.
Hospitality can be offered for one day (daytime only), three days and two nights at the weekend, or at New Year, or four
days and three nights during the Christmas festive period. The choice is yours. And remember ... your offer can be made at any time of the year.

Plans have been submitted to Leeds
City Council to transform the listed Oxford Place Methodist Mission Church into a 70-bedroom hotel,
creating 70 jobs for the city.
The plans for the grade II listed Oxford Place Methodist Church have been submitted by Alistair Flatman Planning on behalf of
The Wesley Hotel, a Methodist based company offering an ethically orientated business model which has been operating in London and Rome for a number of years.
The proposals detail that the conversion of the existing
building would involve internal alterations and addition of three small dormers on the south facing roof slope as well as a flat roof dormer to the northern roof slope to create a 70-bed
hotel.
Plans include a restaurant at lower ground floor level which will
open up onto a new terraced area at the southern end of the building. The hotel would also provide four meeting rooms -conference facilities for around 100 delegates.
The building is currently used as a place of worship as well as
providing meeting space for conferences and office space for a number of charities.
All profits derived from the hotel will be gifted back to the Methodist Church as a charitable donation to assist in the
national work of the denomination. In Leeds, it is intended that profits will be used to support more effective and developing mission projects within the city centre.
According to the cover letter, penned by David A. Quick the district property secretary of the Yorkshire West District of the
Methodist Church, the site would remain a place of worship. It said: "The current ambition of the local church is to maintain a chapel space within the proposed hotel and thus, to continue
the practice of Christian worship on a site that has seen a Methodist presence since 1835. It is also our aim to work with our architects to protect and enhance this important heritage
building within such a prestigious location of the city."

More About Meeting Point
‘Meeting Point’ is a Mission Project of our Circuit based in Harehills Lane. The café is open 07.30 to 13.30 Monday – Friday,
serves reasonably priced food, provides a place to meet, chat and
make friends and offers opportunities for non-judgemental
listening. The café staff endeavours to provide a relaxed
atmosphere where everyone will feel welcome irrespective of their
age, sex, ethnicity, social status or religion.
We give thanks for:
• Pauline (the café’s manageress) and all our committed
volunteers who work so hard serving the customers in the café
week after week;
• Deacon Sheila as she is available to draw alongside people and
listen to them;
• Our Management Committee (and others) who work very hard
behind the scenes to support and steer the ministry of Meeting
Point;
• All the support given by different churches, individuals and
organisations (i.e. financial gifts, provisions for use in the café,
and prayer support);
• Growing relationships with other organisations who are now
partnering with Meeting Point to provide groups to benefit local
people from the café premises.
We ask for your prayers for:
• All Meeting Point’s customers - many of these people are
dealing with difficult life issues e.g. health problems, financial
worries, difficult relationships, unemployment, addictions,
loneliness etc.;
• Pauline, Deacon Sheila and all our volunteers as they continue
to serve the people of Harehills;
• The development of a monthly Dementia Café;
• Wisdom and sensitivity in introducing more spiritual aspects to
the ministry;
• God’s guidance regarding the best way to use Meeting Point’s
premises and facilities to serve our neighbours when the café is
closed (what does the community need and who would be best
to work with to provide this?);
• The Spirit’s leading as to how best to resource (and develop)
the mission and ministry of Meeting Point in the future
(including financially).

House Groups
Early Methodist gatherings were called 'societies'.
John Wesley encouraged different kinds of small
group to develop, so that both leaders and members of the societies could receive support and challenge in their faith.
These groups, called 'classes', met regularly, and the idea was to be accountable to each other about how each person was living the Christian life. So people
had to be very open and willing to be changed by the experience.
In the twentieth century it became less common for
classes to meet in this way but recently many Methodists have been trying to reclaim the tradition.
The supportive small group has been found to be one of the most powerful ways for people to feel that they
belong, and to learn, grow and expand their opportunities for Christian conversation about the
things that matter.
