Meet The Early Years Team

The ‘usual’ School Day (please note changes may occur in response

to Covid-19) The green gate is opened at 8.15am and is locked at 8.30am. (Please bring

your child to the conservatory between these times)

Register is taken at 8.35am Lunch time – 11.45am – 12.30pm

Home time 2.50pm (please collect your child from the conservatory)

If your child is ill and cannot come to school you must let the school office know before

9am. We monitor attendance very closely. If your child is suffering from sickness and/or

diarrhoea they must remain at home until they are 48 hours ‘symptom-free’.

If someone else will be collecting your child, you must let the school office know and they’ll

pass a message to the class. Your child will not be allowed to leave if a message has not

been received.

Medication If your child

requires medication during the school day, a medication form must be completed at the

school office. Only prescribed medication bearing a pharmacist’s label can be administered

at school. Eye drops cannot be administered by staff. If your child is asthmatic, please send

an inhaler and spacer into school with their name on it (pharmacy sticker). We will keep it

in the classroom so that it is handy if needed and will keep a record.

All children are expected to wear uniform. Our school uniform supplier is Nationwide

Uniforms – Spilsby. Their website is https://www.nationwideschooluniforms.co.uk/ - uniform

can be ordered online.

Suitable uniform is also available from supermarkets etc. All we ask is that children wear …

Jumper / Cardigan - Navy Blue

Polo shirt - White

Trousers / skirt / pinafore - Dark grey

Velcro fastening black school shoes (Trainers are

not permitted)

PE kit - White t-shirt, black shorts, black plimsolls

All Reception children also need a pair of wellington boots that can be

kept in school.

Universal Infant Free School Meals Every child in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 is provided with a free lunch which is cooked,

fresh, daily, in the school kitchen in accordance with Government nutritional guidelines.

This is part of a Government scheme to ensure that all children can benefit from a hot meal

at lunchtime. Two options are available each day – option 2 is always a vegetarian option. A

menu will be sent home each half term and we ask you to select your child’s preference

and return it to school before the date shown on the menu. Please make sure that you tell

your child what they are going to have for their lunch each day so that

they know what to expect. If you choose to send a packed lunch for your

child – you must indicate this on the menu and make sure that the

contents of their lunch box are healthy – no chocolate, no fizzy drinks, no sweets.

Healthy Snacks Under the Nursery Milk Scheme, children are provided with a drink of milk each day. They

are also provided with a piece of fruit each day. Each child has a water bottle, provided by

school, and they have free access to drinks of water throughout the day. Your child does not

need any snacks / drinks to be sent from home.

After-School Kids’ Club We

have an after-school Kids’ Club which runs from 3pm – 5.30pm each school day and is

staffed by Teaching Assistants. Children are collected from the classroom and escorted to

Kids’ Club where a drink and a biscuit will be waiting for them. Planned activities and games

keep the children entertained until parents/carers collect them. Children need to be

booked into Kids’ Club by phoning, or sending a text, to 07881571051 before 2.30pm on

the day. A Kids’ Club registration form, showing the charges for this service, is contained in

this pack.

Safeguarding All children

are precious and their welfare and safety is at the heart of everything that we do. Mr Smith,

our Head Teacher, is the school’s designated safeguarding lead and, in his absence, Mrs

Page takes the lead. All staff receive regular safeguarding training and the school has robust

procedures in place to address safeguarding concerns. You can find our safeguarding policy,

and much more, by visiting our school website.

School Information Our School Website is regularly updated and contains all statutory information. Our school

policies can be found on the website. You can also find our latest Ofsted report and the

latest SIAMs report (church school inspection). You will also be able to find out about how

your data is used by school.

Parent Partnership We

appreciate and value your role as your child’s first and most enduring teacher. We aim to

work in partnership with you to make sure that your child makes the

best possible progress.

In our Reception and Year 1 classes, we use the online learning journey known as

‘Tapestry’. All parents are encouraged to activate a Tapestry account so that they can

securely access photographs and videos, illustrating their child’s learning in school. Tapestry

also enables parents to upload pictures / videos of their child’s learning at home. We set

weekly home learning challenges, and hold regular parent Pop-In sessions. We encourage

parents to regularly hear their child read at home and send reading books, word cards and

other activities home. We are always available for a chat, if you would like to discuss ways

in which you can best support your child’s learning.

Behaviour We are

very proud of our school community. We firmly believe that a happy child, who is

comfortable in their environment and surrounded by people who listen to them and

respect them will learn to the best of their ability. We support children to make the right

choices and praise good behaviour in a range of different ways.

Our Ten Magdalen Values are the foundation of everything that we do. Our most recent Ofsted report stated,

• House points – your child will be encouraged to earn ‘house points’ for their

allocated house by working hard, being a good friend etc. The house with the most

house points at the end of each half term earns a reward day.

• Star of the Week – each week, the class teachers nominate a

child from their class who has demonstrated an excellent

attitude, overcome difficulties or has been an example to others.

This child becomes the ‘Star of the Week’ and wears the special

yellow hoodie for the week.

• Monster Points – the children in the reception

class each have a digital ‘monster’. They work to earn points for their monster

through good behaviour and hard work. These monsters are displayed on the

classroom smart board.

• Face to face contact with parents – we believe that we need to work with you in

order to support your child effectively to meet their potential. We will celebrate your

child’s successes with you and we will also chat to you if we have concerns. We hope

that if you are worried about your child, you would come and see us. A problem

discussed is often sorted our easily so please – talk to us.

• A trip to see Mr Smith – going to the Head Teacher’s office is seen as a reward at our

school!

Pupils’ personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding.

The school’s positive ethos and ‘Magdalen Values’ are woven into everything that the school does. Pupils’ behaviour in classrooms,

corridors and on the playground is exemplary.

Curriculum

We plan our curriculum following the principles of The Early Years Foundation Stage. The

curriculum is the total of all the learning experiences provided by the school for your child.

We aim to provide a broad, balanced curriculum at all stages of your child’s development

through which your child will be able to reach their full potential and develop their

individual talents, interests and skills. Your child is at the centre of all we do.

Our Topics We use a topic or themed approach to make links between different

subjects as we believe that this makes learning relevant and enjoyable. Our Termly topics

are as follows :-

Autumn Term A

All About Me What makes me special?

Autumn Term B

Happy Days Why do we celebrate?

Spring Term A

Tell Me A Story … What are my favourite stories?

Spring Term B

Wonderful World How can we care for the

world?

Learning Is Fun

We are called ‘The Foundation Stage’ for a very good reason! The skills that your child learns during their first year at school provide the firm foundations for all future learning. There is so much to learn in the first year of your child’s reception year at school! Some things will come easily to them, other things might be a little bit tricky, but rest assured that we will do all we can to make learning fun and to support and challenge your child during their learning journey. Research shows that children who are taught well in their first year of school go on to achieve better GCSE results in English and maths. In reception, we work hard to embed positive attitudes towards school and learning, in addition to setting the expectations for children’s behaviour and building sound understanding of key concepts such as reading and numbers.

In the first five years children develop physically, cognitively and emotionally at a faster rate than at any other time – so every day counts – and every learning opportunity is important. We plan our curriculum, both indoors and outdoors, very carefully. We provide learning opportunities that enable children to start from ‘what they know’ and develop their understanding in a fun, practical way – it’s usually so much fun – they don’t realise that they’re learning!

You can find a copy of our weekly timetable on the school website. Sessions include …

Daily Phonics Session – Phonics is a way of teaching reading where your child is taught to

read letters or groups of letters by saying the sound(s) they represent. We will send phonics

booklets home each Friday so that you can practise with your child.

Funky Fingers – a weekly session designed to develop your child’s

fine motor control.

PE – The children have two PE sessions each week.

PE kit stays in school and is sent home each half

term. Mrs Perry also delivers a Movement 4 Learning session each

Monday.

Tasty Tuesday - we bake each Tuesday afternoon with Mrs Linkman.

Page 9: The Magdalen Church of England / Methodist School · Kids Club where a drink and a biscuit will be waiting for them. Planned activities and games keep the children entertained until

RE – We teach one RE lesson per week. This is taken from the Lincolnshire

Agreed Syllabus.

Personal and Social development – we follow the Jigsaw scheme, which

continues throughout the school.

Maths – maths is taught daily. We use the Abacus scheme as the basis for

our work.

Writing Time with our school writing mascot ‘Pencil Pete’.

Outdoor Learning

We are very fortunate to have a very large and well-resourced outdoor play area

that is for the sole use of the reception class. We work outside each day – whatever the

weather! All children need to have a pair of wellies in school each day. We have a class set

of waterproofs.

Page 10: The Magdalen Church of England / Methodist School · Kids Club where a drink and a biscuit will be waiting for them. Planned activities and games keep the children entertained until

A

All areas of the curriculum are covered outside.

Each day, the children are set a ‘Rainbow Challenge’. A special

‘job’ to do outdoors which is designed to enhance their

learning.

Starting school is an exciting time! If you have any questions, please feel free to email me [email protected]

and I’ll be happy to help.
