The Mallard Issue 297 June 2016

Tributes Paid to Much Loved and

Respected Mike Tilbury

T here was standing room only and rightly so, at Great

Massingham’s St Mary’s Church, on Thursday 19th

May, for a service of celebration and thanksgiving for the

life of Mike Tilbury who died aged 80 on 24th April. In

fact, the Church was so full that the service was relayed

to people listening outside.

Mike, a village resident since 1968, has given so much to

his community over the years and villagers present were

keen to express both their sorrow and gratitude for a very

special person. He was much loved and respected.

Reverend Judith Pollard and Reverend Jonathan Riviere,

Rector of Sandringham, led the service. Mike Dobson,

County Councillor, read one of the lessons and Vic Cross and Paul, one of Mike’s sons,

gave eulogies. Members and colleagues of the West Norfolk Council were also in atten-

dance as were six mace bearers who formed part of the escort. Mike had been our local

councillor on West Norfolk Borough Council since 1974 and Mayor of the Borough in

1992/3. He was so community minded and always there to help people.

Both Vic and Paul mentioned Mike’s genuine commitment to his community as well as

his love of family, travel, gardening, playing snooker and his sense of humour. Mike was

instrumental in saving our village pub, The Dabbling Duck - or The Rose and Crown as

it was then. Two examples here sum up the fun person he was.

Vic recalled their time together in the Massingham Fire Service. Mike and Vic were part

of the ‘Massingham Fire Service Quiz Team’ at a national final. The quiz consisted of

three rounds - one individual and two team rounds. Of the two team rounds you could

confer with your team mates in one but not the other. On the non - conferring round a

member of an opposing team who happened to be a clergyman, when considering his

answer, leaned forward and put his elbows on the table, with his hands together as if in

prayer. Mike was heard to call out, “No Conferring!”

Paul recalled the time Mike, as Mayor, was invited to open the Mart in King’s Lynn. Mike

was really excited about this, especially as he got the chance to ride on the dodgems.

Overcome by his excitement, he jumped on the dodgems for his ride having completely

forgotten to declare the Mart open!

Mike really loved Great Massingham and would do anything for his beloved village. He

was a real family man. Paul recalled their happy family holidays when his mother Carol

was alive. He also talked of more recent years when Mike met and married Isobel and

the pleasure Mike received from her family too. He will be very sadly missed.

Our thoughts are with Isobel and all the family at this sad time.

‘Histry Bits’ AN OVERNIGHT STOP

In the days before efficient road and rail transport, there was only

one way for Scottish farmers to get their cattle to the lucrative

Smithfield market in London – they had to walk. And what a

walk it was! For more than three centuries vast numbers of

‘Scotch’ cattle, mostly sturdy Galloways, born and bred in the

Highlands and Islands, were assembled at the Scottish border

town of Dumfries, before being driven south by highly-skilled

drovers and their scruffy but intelligent cattle dogs.

Their 300 mile route took them down through Northumberland

and Durham, through Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, to Ely and the

Fens. By the time they reached Norfolk the cattle were exhausted

and emaciated, many of them scarcely able to walk. At Setchey,

near Lynn, the weaker animals were sold to waiting dealers. The

rest were herded onwards towards the two big Norfolk cattle fairs

– St. Faith’s near Norwich, and Hempton Green near Fakenham.

There they were bought by local farmers, fattened up on nutritious

Norfolk turnips, before finally being driven down through Suffolk

and Essex to Smithfield where most of them ended up on the

Christmas tables of London’s burgeoning middle classes.

So where does Massingham fit in to all this? Draw a line on a map

from Setchey to Hempton Green and the answer is clear. Our vil-

lage lies exactly half way between the two of them, and with its

wide greens and numerous ponds, it provided the ideal overnight

rest stop for

thirsty and

exhausted

herds and

drovers

alike. What

a sight it

must have

been as the

huge herds

gathered on

the greens, bellowing and mooing as the tireless cattle dogs

rounded up the stragglers, and saw them safely settled down for

the night. Lord Orford of Houghton, who owned the greens,

charged a penny per animal per night, with strict fines levied on

any stragglers. The herd would be on the move again at first light,

the tartan-clad drovers marching on ahead, knitting as they went.

Yes, you read it right. Knitting. To earn a little extra cash the

drovers, hard-drinking, wild-eyed men, knitted woollen stock-

ings as they walked. Sweet… David Miller

A huxterer – a dealer in rabbit skins and odds and ends

A mawkin – a scarecrow A dwile – dishcloth

We were sad to hear that Mike Tilbury had died. He was a lovely man who will be greatly

missed. He was always very helpful and did his utmost for the village for many years both

as a fireman and a Borough Councillor. We went to his funeral which was extremely

well-attended with family members, villagers, friends and members of the Borough

Council, together with players from the snooker league. Firemen, past and present, pro-

vided a guard of honour for the coffin and everyone was welcomed to the village hall after

the funeral to have refreshments and share memories of Mike. Our condolences to Isobel,

Paul, Richard and families.

We went ter the ‘Tennis fer Free’ day as we’d heard there wus a BBQ and we thought

that moight be free anall – but that weren’t. We dint play. Daisy stopped ter watch the

final – that wus just loike Wimbledon! The winners were the lovely Ali Ward and

singer/songwriter Jake Morrell who cuduv entertained if it hed rained (older readers will

understand that).

Mr Hedley Skipper will be 90 on 4th June and we wud loike to wish him Happy Birthday.

We int quoit as old as that but we both hev birthdays in June anall. More heavy work fer

the postman!

We are gitting excited abowt our holiday in Menorca. Gert and Bert are flying there and

that’ll tek two hours. Daisy and Sid are going by train and ferry and that’ll tek two days!

We wus very pleased to see Bev, our publisher, got an award for Community Service.

She int very gud at spelling though – she never put ours roight! Think that’s cos we hint

Strollers..... Going to the Dogs! On Sunday 24th April eight strollers set off

for a circular walk down to the Dogotel and

back. The weather forecast was discourag-

ing with the typical English weather set to

be typically untypical for late April. Unde-

terred we set off, with Reggie in company,

up Walcups Lane and along Mad Dog Lane

to join Peddars Way.

Although the wind was cold there

was no sign of rain and we had

some bright moments of sun.

After about 500 yards we took

the track to the left, walking

along a field’s edge with fine

views to the south and the songs of skylarks

overhead. We next made our way to ‘Violet

Lane’, a lovely shaded path but, unfortu-

nately, no violets. At the end of this path

we stopped for a brief rest before descend-

ing the old Setch Road which leads to the

rear of the Dogotel business. We were half-

way down when a sharp hail shower hit us

but as soon as it came it went and we were

once more in sunshine. When we eventu-

ally reached our destination some of us

decided to call for a lift back to base while

the rest of us trudged up Peddars Way, past

Clark’s Farm, to rejoin Mad Dog Lane, a very

appropriate name in the circumstances.

Lunch was taken at the Dabbling Duck by

the end of which the predicted rains arrived.

Reggie the dog (pictured left) must have

walked the equivalent of twenty miles on

his little legs!............. Our next walk is

on Sunday 26th June. Andrew Bickerton

Massingham played well but unfortunately

win their next 5 matches but alas, it wasn’t enough to get them in the final which saw an

finishing a very respectable 4th. Well done to the team and a special mention to Lucy

BOWLS CLUB NEWS. The drive to raise funding for the new Pavil-

ion is ongoing. Now that Planning Consent

has been granted (thanks to Arthur Allen for

his valuable help in obtaining this) we are

actively seeking funding from various

grants organisations. This is a painstaking

and slow process and so far has not yielded

much success but we are plodding on and

have all the necessary documentation in

place for further applications. We have a

pledge of £4000 matched funding from the

Parish Council and therefore need to raise

the same amount ourselves to cover the total

cost of the project. The need for the new

pavilion is two-fold, firstly it will be neces-

sary to remove our existing hut, which in

itself has become something of an eyesore,

to facilitate the planned redevelopment of

the Village Hall. Aside from this, the hut

would have needed to be replaced in a few

years as it is becoming unserviceable due to

its' deterioration over the years. The addi-

tion of a new pavilion will, at long last, pro-

vide a decent facility for the club and hope-

fully raise the profile of our small but suc-

cessful club. The bowls club decided to take

on the task of replacing it rather than leav-

ing it to the Village Hall Trustees which

will, hopefully, relieve them of the cost

and the added workload to include it in

their plans for redevelopment. Anyone out

there who would like to help us in any

way with this project, please let us know.

As many people will be aware, we sadly

lost one of our longest standing members,

Derek Skipper, earlier this year and, after

discussion with Lena, we are establishing

a Derek Skipper Memorial Trophy in

Derek's honour. The trophy has been pur-

chased from voluntary donations from

bowls club members and it is planned that

the trophy will be contested between

Massingham and 2 or 3 other local clubs,

all of which Derek either played for or

was well known by members of these

clubs. The organisation of the tournament

is in its early stages and we will publish

the outcome at a later date.

The 2016 season is now under way and we

have again put in a lot of work on the

green during the autumn and spring

months. We are fielding three teams in

two different leagues again this year and

are hoping for another good season.

Play Park Latest. First the bad news. Despite all our best efforts, we did not qualify for a grant

from WREN. No reasons are given but competition was intense and their

funds limited.

Now the good news. At its meeting on 16th May, Great Massingham Parish

Council decided to honour its agreement and fund the money already ring

fenced for the Play Park refurbishment. This means that ‘Phase 1’ can go ahead as

planned with three new pieces of equipment being installed with top quality safe surfac-

ing. Hopefully, work will start in July and be completed in time for the summer holidays.

This does mean, however, that ‘Phase 2’, originally to be funded by the Parish Council,

cannot go ahead. To achieve further improvements we may need the establishment of a

Play Park Committee which can instigate and oversee fund raising activities. Funds

raised may then be supported by contributions from other funding organisations.

If you are interested in being a part of this committee please contact me, Vic Cross or

Parish Clerk, Kevin Webb (see contact list on page 15). Andrew Bickerton

90 Glorious Years!

Our monarch Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 90th birthday on April 21st but

she also has an ‘official birthday’ which, this year, will be on Saturday June

11th. This tradition originates from 1748, the reign of King George II, whose

actual birthday fell in chilly November. King George inaugurated a military cavalcade

for his armed forces which always took place in the summer months to take advantage of

the (hopefully) sunny weather. This cavalcade evolved to also become a celebration of

the monarchy, a tradition which continues to the present day.

Modern celebrations of our armed forces’ parade ground prowess are rightly applauded

throughout the world. The month of June has ‘Trooping the Colour’ on Horse Guard’s

Parade followed by a military fly-past and the traditional appearance by the Royal family

on the Buckingham Palace balcony. The birthday honours list is also published at this time.

Because this year is so significant – the Queen having become the longest-serving British

monarch of all time – we too are encouraged to have local events and parties and to join

in a national weekend of celebration.

In King’s Lynn we have ‘Celebrate King’s Lynn’ - a free, full day event of activities.

See the website www.celebratekingslynn.com for further details.

In our benefice, we are having a barbeque at St. Botolph’s Church, Grimston on Saturday

11th starting at 4pm. Tickets are £5 – do come along and enjoy a lovely summer evening.

What better reason for a party?

Our beloved Queen offers us the perfect model of enduring public service and inspira-

tional leadership, underpinned by strong Christian faith. She writes: “For me the teach-

ings of Christ and my personal accountability before God provide a framework in which

I try to live my life.” We could do well to follow her example.

Let us all join in wishing Her Majesty a very Happy Official Birthday: hip hip hooray!

Report on the Great British Tennis Weekend

This event, organised by the LTA and hosted by Great Massingham Tennis Club on the

14th and 15th May, was a huge success and a great opportunity for everyone, young and

older to play tennis for FREE and they certainly did that.

On the Saturday over fifty children took part in the morning coaching sessions and in the

afternoon there was a taster session in cardio tennis, a ‘crazy tennis’ session to test con-

centration in mastering all the trick shots and a ball machine which gave the opportunity

to test your speed of serve. Fantastic BBQ food and delicious cakes to keep everyone

going! The Sunday was just as exciting with a mixed doubles tournament and wine and a

BBQ that was cooked to perfection by John Andersson.

This fantastic weekend showed our club at its best and would not have been possible

without our band of merry helpers! Thanks to the fantastic Task Force Dream Team of

Bruce, Alan and Bob for putting up the gazebo and doing all the ‘technical’ stuff, to

Hugh Symington for loaning his court for the tournament and Barrie Colvin for bringing

and manning his ball machine - a big hit! Thanks to coaches; James, Ashley, Toby and

Luca, Official Photographer Alan Petto, the wonderful WOWs (Women on Wednesdays)

for helping with refreshments and supplying fabulous cakes and the clear-up team, Sue &

Michael Martin and everyone who ‘mucked in!’ Lastly, a big thank you to Annie, Penny

and Ali for putting it all together and making it a fun weekend! More pictures in the next issue or go to clubspark.lta.org.uk/greatmassinghamtennis
