A map is more than a geographi-cal representation of a place. It is animage that mirrors a society’s politi-cal, religious, and cultural vision ofitself. The Map Makers, a three-partseries, tells the story of maps throughcrucial events of world history as it ex-plores major developments in mapmaking.
Episode one looks at the first mapthat included America, which is nowhoused in the Library of Congress;episode two features the maps from Henry VIII’s era, when cartog-raphers were in huge demand; and episode three details the skillsnecessary and the dangers faced creating the maps for the criticalD-Day invasion during World War II.
“Discovery: The Waldseemuller Map—1507” is the story of amap that changed the way man viewed the world. It is the tale of amap now valued at 10 million dollars which has become known asthe “birth certificate of America.” Within the lines marked on itssurface can be traced the first discoveries of the “new world,” by16th century explorers such as Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci. But why were the new lands called America, and who were the menwho first named the new continent on the famous Waldseemullermap? The intriguing history behind the map is revealed.
From Russia to the Rio Grande, Senator Pete V. Domenici hasused his leadership skills to change lives worldwide. Narrated byjournalist Sam Donaldson, Domenici chronicles the historic careerof New Mexico’s longest serving United States Senator througheight presidents and four decades of change. With stories from BobDole, Chris Dodd, Howard Baker, Bill Clinton, Lamar Alexander, and many staff and friends, we learn about a man known as “Pete”and discover how he helped New Mexico and the world.
“He has made America safer, Russia safer and the world safer,”says former President Bill Clinton, referring to the historic work
“This is a story about a baseball player, a teacher, and a lawyer. About a father and a patriot. Thisis about leadership.” —Sam Donaldson, Narrator
at the end of the Cold War. And at home, he may have saved theacequias of New Mexico along with the silvery minnow. “There willnever be another Pete,” says Jose Otero of Bosque Farms.
According to Senator Bob Dole who worked with Domenici tobalance the federal budget, “If you look back now and see wherewe are today, had we followed some of Pete Domenici’s efforts wayback in 1985, we might be out of this mess.”
The hour-long program highlights Senator Domenici’s remark-able achievements with the federal budget, energy policy, nationaldefense, and non-proliferation, as well as his work as a championfor individuals suffering from mental illness and, of course, hisamazing accomplishments in New Mexico. From locations halfwayaround the world to the shore of the Rio Grande, the documentarycaptures a piece of history that will live forever at the DomeniciCenter at New Mexico State University.
“The history is astounding,” says producer/director ChrisSchueler. “And this man’s ability to connect with people, rangingfrom small communities in New Mexico to nuclear scientists inRussia, made it possible for him to do things for our state and theworld that affect us all.” The program includes stories very fewpeople know about Domenici—stories that reveal how his leader-ship shaped New Mexico and the entire country.
Domenici will be an integral part of the Pete V. Domenici Ar-chives at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, and theproject will serve as background for the living legacy of SenatorDomenici in yearly Public Policy Conferences to raise awarenessof some of our country’s most challenging problems.
Domenici can be seen Wednesday, September 21st at 7:00 p.m.and Monday, September 26th at 9:00 p.m.
Episode two, “Religion: The MercatorAtlas—1572,” uncovers the shadowyworld of espionage in 16th Century Europe,a time when map making and spying wenthand in hand. It features Gerard Mercator, the most famous map maker to have lived, who became caught up in a dangerous plotto overthrow Queen Elizabeth I using aninvasion map ordered by England’s en-emies, the French. It is a story of intrigue, treason, and religious turmoil, with mapmakers at the heart of the struggle for
power in Europe. Information was power in European royal courts, and fragile maps were the key. “Power: The D-Day Invasion Maps” focuses on a time in historywhen thousands of men and women risked their lives to create a setof top-secret invasion maps during World War II. Allied servicemen and women worked alongside French Resistance members incovert operations to create a “living map” of the Normandy coast. The resulting invasion maps were the most extensive ever to havebeen created, combining aerial photography and intelligence infor-mation. The invasion maps were critical to the success of the D-Daylandings, and ultimately the defeat of Hitler’s regime.
The Map Makers airs Mondays at 9:00 p.m. beginning Septem-ber 5th. It repeats Sundays at 9:30 p.m. beginning September 11th.

Moral scruples and admirable virtueslead to success in business? Really?
In 1962, Richard Nixon’s oncemeteoric political career lay in ruins. The former vice-president had suf-fered two bitter losses; one in the1960 presidential race against JohnF. Kennedy, the other in a bid for thegovernorship of his home state ofCalifornia. Yet, only six years later,Nixon would be elected President ofthe United States. How did it hap-
pen? Why did it happen? That is the historical riddle that Nixon’s the One: The ’68 Elec-
tion (And How It Changed America) examines. Combining ele-ments of biography with an exploration of the larger cultural, po-litical, and historical landscape of the sixties, the film argues thatNixon, far from being an improbable president, was the figure whomost expertly exploited the tensions of the era, harnessing them forhis own ends.
A story about the political awakening of the sunbelt and of thepeople Nixon called his “forgotten Americans,” Nixon’s the One
The true story of the most stunning comeback in American politics…and the divided country it created.
“Perhaps the best place to find out aboutthe real coalition being forged by Nixonin 1968 was at the “control tower” of theeffort—John Mitchell’s brain trust at 445Park Avenue, just across the street fromthe formal headquarters at 450 Park. There, in a cubbyhole next to Mitchell’soffice, a brilliant young lawyer namedKevin Phillips served as the house experton ethnic voting patterns… he was incharge of his own specialty, which as hebluntly puts it is “the whole secret of poli-tics—knowing who hates who.”
An American fa-vorite for his award-winning role in thehit TV series House,
the versatile British actor HughLaurie showcases his musical sidein “Hugh Laurie: Let Them Talk –A Celebration of New OrleansBlues” on Great Performances.
Laurie sings a wide selection of tunes, accompanying him-self on piano or guitar, and backed by some of the town’s top-flight musicians. Throughout the hour, there are intimate per-formances and rehearsals with blues legends Allen Toussaintand Irma Thomas, known as the “Soul Queen of New Orleans,”as well as another fellow traveler from Great Britain similarlyinspired by this uniquely American music, Sir Tom Jones. OfLaurie’s piano prowess, Jones observes admiringly, “He musthave listened to a lot of blues players, a lot of boogie-woogieplayers.”
Musical selections feature New Orleans blues standardsalong with forgotten and neglected gems, including “Swanee,”“Luckenbach Texas,” “John Henry,” “Buddy Bolden’s Blues,”and “St. James Infirmary.”
“Hugh Laurie: Let Them Talk – A Celebration of New Or-leans Blues” on Great Performances will be broadcast Fri-day, September 30th at 9:00 p.m.
Critics of capitalism often label thosewho create wealth as greedy, malicious, and unscruptulous with little regard forthe public. Doing Virtuous Business ad-dresses these charges head-on. Based onthe best-selling book Spiritual Enter-prise by Theodore Roosevelt Malloch,
Doing Virtuous Business examines how modern companies incorpo-rate the ancient virtues of respect, courage, patience, discipline, compas-sion, forgiveness, gratitude, and humility into their business practices.
Doing Virtuous Business spotlights more than a dozen inspirationalbusiness success stories, featuring unprecedented access to many ofthe most celebrated and influential entrepreneurs and chief executives. The documentary includes in-depth conversations with the current orformer presidents, CEOs, founders, and chairpersons of Dannon Foods,ServiceMaster, Inc., Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Wal-Mart, IBM,Tyson Foods, Inc., Herman Miller, Inc., Cargill, Inc., Habitat for Human-ity International, Cummins Engine, Inc., Kimray, Inc., and Chick-fil-ARestaurants, Inc., among many others.
Besides making the world a better place, Malloch argues, virtuousenterprises—companies that have operated on ethical models informedby spiritual traditions—have been more successful than they otherwisewould be and, in the long run, have outperformed their competitors.
Doing Virtuous Business will be broadcast Friday, September 16that 9:00 p.m.
—Garry Wills, from Nixon Agonistes:The Crisis of the Self-Made Man
unearths the ori-gins of the RedState-Blue Statedivide. It’s a so-bering, wry look athow the sixties di-vided us, and howone man steppedinto the breach toclaim the biggestprize of all.
Narrated byDick Cavett, the program contains archival footage and original in-terviews with activist Tom Hayden, former Nixon advisor KevinPhillips, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Maraniss, Nixonbiographer Elizabeth Drew, and bestselling author Rick Perlstein(Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing ofAmerica), among others.

In Binge, viewers travel to a roadside memorial that marks thespot where a teenager died in a drunk driving accident. Though otherteens involved in the accident were grief-stricken, losing a friendwasn’t enough to change the binge drinking behaviors of all of them. The program interviews law enforcement, university officials, andbar owners trying to change the lives of these young people beforeit’s too late.
Binge can be seen Wednesday, September 28th at 9:30 p.m.
is designed to make sure that women get the right information, be-come more aware of their bodies, and recognize that abdominalbloating, abdominal pain, pelvic pain, urinary symptoms, difficultyin eating, and feeling full quickly may not be the norm.
Chances of surviving ovarian cancer improve if it is detectedearly and confined to the ovaries, but with no reliable screening testavailable, many women with ovarian cancer are not diagnosed un-til the disease has spread. Against this daunting reality, the searchfor a screening test takes on the utmost urgency. Victims of ova-rian cancer include President Obama’s mother Ann Soetoro, CorettaScott King, and comedienne Gilda Radner.
The Whisper—the silent crisis of ovarian cancer will bebroadcast Wednesday, September 14th at 9:00 p.m.

Both Dish Network and DirecTV Satellite services are now carrying KENW-TV in theAlbuquerque-Santa Fe Designated Market Area (DMA). This DMA includes all countiesin New Mexico except Roosevelt, Curry, Quay, Union, and Dona Ana. DirecTV is carryingthe KENW-TV High Definitions Channel (HD 3-1) on its HD channel 3 and the KENW-TV Standard Definition (SD 3-2) on channel 3. Dish Network is carrying the KENW-TVSD signal on its channel 3.
The Nielsen Company decides which counties go into the various DMAs. At the presenttime, there are 210 DMAs in the United States. In population size, the Albuquerque-SantaFe DMA is the 45th largest in the U.S. because it takes in most of the State of New Mexico.Nielsen determines the counties in a DMA by which television stations the viewers in thatcounty are watching.
By Nielsen rules, DirecTV and Dish Network subscribers in Union, Quay, Curry, andRoosevelt counties will receive the Amarillo PBS station. In all other counties of NewMexico, except for Dona Ana, subscribers will receive PBS from KENW-TV (Portales)and KNME-TV (Albuquerque). Dona Ana is in the El Paso DMA, and those subscriberswill receive PBS from KRWG-TV (Las Cruces) and KCOS-TV (El Paso).
