WCMS Wins Over Lee West
Worth County Middle School kicked off the season at
home with a huge victory over Lee West last Wednes-
day evening. They won 28-8! Way to go Rams! The
WCMS Rams are under the direction of Head Coach,
Austin Newton. The boys were full of excitement to
play their first game and even more excited and ecstatic
to win. Please make plans to join them again this
Wednesday, August 29th at home as they take on Al-
bany Middle. It’s important to our Football players,
Coaches, Cheerleaders, Parents and School to support
our Athletes. They play hard, and whether they come
away with a victory or not, we are one team!

Cotton/Peanut Research Field Day set for Sept. 5, 2018, in Tifton, Georgia
The Georgia Cotton Commission, Georgia Peanut Commission and the University of Geor-
gia Extension Cotton and Peanut Teams, will co-sponsor a joint research field day on
Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018, in Tifton, Georgia. The field day will start at 8:00 a.m. at the
University of Georgia Conference Center (15 RDC Rd., Tifton, Georgia) before relocating
to the RDC Pivot and Ponder Farm to view research trials. Those planning to attend need to
RSVP by Friday, Aug. 31, to Jeannie Evans at [email protected] or 229-386-3006. The
purpose of the tour is to showcase current research, which is funded by the respective com-
missions, in plot-side presentations by the researchers themselves. The sponsors’ goal is to
provide an educational environment for cotton and peanut farmers and give them the op-
portunity to pose questions directly to the researchers and to express opinions and concerns
pertinent to the production of their crops. Chairmen of the peanut and cotton commissions,
Armond Morris and Bart Davis, respectively, agree this event gives farmers the distinct op-
portunity to interact with the leadership of each commission, other farmers and industry
representatives. It is an excellent place for farmers to observe, first-hand, the research pro-
grams funded by their checkoff investments. To view an agenda, visit
www.georgiacottoncommission.org or www.gapeanuts.com.
Words from Lynn
Hello and Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a great weekend. We sure did. We enjoyed Friday night under the lights in Worth County this
week. Watching my Ram Boys play is great! It doesn’t matter if they win or lose, they will always be my favorite! Once a Ram, always a Ram.
We are playing at home this coming week as well against Tift County. Make plan to come out and support these Rams. They play extremely hard
and as a team. You will like what you see. We enjoy gathering with friends and watching the game, you will too.
With great things, comes business too. The Martin News wants to let all their readers know that with special election season kicking off for Sheriff
which will be voted on in March 2019, you will see advertisement in The Martin News. All these ads are paid for by the candidates and are not
endorsed by The Martin News. We do not endorse a particular candidate for any office. With that being said, The Martin News does encourage all
those eligible to vote, to please do so. Your opinion does matter!
Please remember if there is anything that you would like to see, please feel free to email us at [email protected] and we will do our best to
make it happen. I want to remind everyone to please stay tuned to the Dates to Remember in The Martin News so we can keep you up to date on all
the great things happening in our community. We would love to see you all at the many events that happen in our great town. We appreciate you
all! I hope you all have a great week and as always, thank you so much for your support of the Martin News.

Who Let The Dawgs Out?
UGA Bulldog Statues About to
Pop Up Around Town
As the University of Georgia Tifton cam-
pus begins its nine-month centennial cele-
bration, UGA Bulldog statues will begin
showing up around Tifton, similar
to those found around Athens where
UGA's main campus is located.
Last week, the first Dawg statue,
"TUGA" -- for Tifton UGA -- appeared at
the front of the Tifton campus. Six more
Dawgs are scheduled to be placed around
Tifton, sponsored by local businesses.
The statues are an initiative of the cam-
pus' Agribusiness Club and Collegiate
FFA. Two of the Dawgs are scheduled to
be placed downtown, one near the en-
trance to the Cato Knight Memorial Park-
ing Complex on Main Street. The fiber-
glass Dawgs are five feet long, three-and-
a-half feet tall and three feet wide. Each
sponsored Dawg will have a customized
paint job. Organizers say the Dawgs
should begin appearing around town
within the next three weeks.

Benji Deloach of Southern Woods Plantation Receives Honor
At the Sylvester-Worth County Chamber of Commerce Mix
and Mingle held last Tuesday, Senator Greg Kirk presented
Benji Deloach with a proclamation from the state recognizing
Southern Woods for all they do for the State of Georgia, our
region, as well as Sylvester-Worth County. What an honor!
Southern Woods Plantation is absolutely breath taking.
Where do you go to hunt quail? The Bobwhite Belt of South
Georgia, that’s where. Hunting the “Prince of Game Birds” is a
fine southern tradition and is part of their heritage at Southern
Woods Plantation. For this reason, a hunting experience with them is unlike any other. It’s not merely their geography,
it’s their history that makes the difference. Their many acres of natural pine trees which have existed in their current con-
dition for 100 years make a perfect home for the indigenous Bobwhite Quails that live and breed on our land. Their
guides walk this land with a love of nature and passion for the hunt. They walk the ground as though they were in their
own back yard, knowing every covey by name. To aide you in your hunt, Southern Woods Plantation offers specially de-
signed four-person buggies. These buggies are ideal for shuttling hunters along with their gear and their guide. It’s
southern comfort and good hunting.
Congratulations to Mr. Deloach, the Deloach family and Southern Woods Plantation for a well deserved honor.

Wet Weather, Heat Fuel Mosquito Boom
Georgians only face a few more weeks of
mosquito season, but residents need to stay
vigilant to keep mosquito populations in
check. Fueled by what seems to be almost
daily rain showers or storms across the state,
Georgia's mosquito population is higher than
average this year, said Elmer Gray, a Univer-
sity of Georgia Cooperative Extension ento-
mologist and mosquito expert. "Populations
are already up, and with standing water eve-
rywhere and forecast intermittent showers
through August, we're poised to see even
more mosquitoes," Gray said. Gray reminds
residents to use mosquito repellents and to
wear long sleeves and long pants as often as
possible while they're outdoors making the
most of the end of the summer. Asian tiger
mosquitoes lay eggs and develop in anything
that can hold water: Clogged downspouts,
watering cans that are left outside, children's
toys or dishes used to catch water under pot-
ted plants. "People don't understand how
diligent they have to be in emptying out their
containers," Gray said. "Really, we're at the
point that there is so much in the environ-
ment, with this frequent rainfall, that there
are going to be pockets of water where these
mosquitoes can breed."

Worth County School News
It’s been another busy week in the Worth County School System! Academics are being taught and sports are under way. Be sure to
like each school Facebook Page in order to keep up with events that are going on at your child’s school.
Worth County Primary School has been busy this week learning. The teachers have been learning too!
Teachers recently engaged in Istation training to assist students achieve academic growth! “Super-Toni” the trainer is leading the
way. There will be a WCPS Parent Workshop held on August 30th at 9am and 1pm. The topic is Visitor or Volunteer? Which one
am I & What do I do? This will be a great workshop that you will not want to miss. If you plan to attend, please let the school
know. The week ended with excitement for Ram Friday! Students and Faculty were decked out in black and gold supporting their
Ram Boys!
Worth County Elementary School is off to a great start for the 2018-2019 school year. Just a reminder from WCES that in order for
your child to be called during afternoon pickup, you will be required to show the new WCES pickup card. This card will have your
child’s name, grade and teacher listed. We recommend that you have this card on the dash of your vehicle. Two cards will be pro-
vided to you. Failure to present your child’s pick up card will require you to park in the parking lot and go into the school with your
identification to pick up your child. This will be strictly enforced.
Worth County Middle School has been super busy this week with academics and sports. Please be sure to visit their Facebook page
for all the sports schedules. You don’t want to miss one of the events and if you like sports, there’s bound to be a Ram game of sort
to come and watch. The Social Studies/ Science Fair project information will be going home real soon. All WCMS students will
complete either a social studies or science project. Due dates for each part of the project will be sent home soon. Six grade students
will complete a Social Studies Project. Seventh grade students will complete a Science Project. Eighth grade students will have the
choice of a Social Studies or Science Project. The school has announced that picture retake day is coming on September 20th. Sci-
entific Method at WCMS has been an area of concentration this past week. Students in Mrs. Parten’s 6th and 7th grade Science
classes have been learning about the scientific method and experiment design through labs this week. Be sure to visit the school
Facebook page for pictures. Mrs. Mitchell's Business and Computer Science classes have been studying how effective communica-
tion is a vital skill needed for employment in the 21st Century. Recently they participated in a lesson called "Drawing Twins". One
member of the pair was given a picture which must not be shown to their partner. The person with the picture must give instructions
to their partner so that they can draw it. This lesson illustrated how hard it is to give clear instructions as well as how hard it is to lis-
ten. Be sure to check out those pictures. By the looks of the pictures, that task was hard!
Worth County High School has also been hard at work academically and with sports. We invite you all to join us at the sporting
events. Please see their school Facebook page for any updates.
As with all schools, they have a Facebook page and school information can be seen at worthschools.net. Thank you to the commu-
nity for all of your support and Go Rams!

Volunteer Recruitment Fair
Planned for August 30
Coastal Plain CASA in Tifton is hosting the
5th Annual Volunteer Recruitment Fair for lo-
cal non-profit organizations. The event will be
held 4:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 30, at the Tift Re-
gional Community Events Center, 1657 Car-
penter Road. The fair's purpose is
to inform the community about ways folks
may serve as volunteers to local nonprof-
its. "This is an event that people can quickly
walk through and see what non-profit organi-
zations are available to them right here our
community. They can volunteer a small
amount of their time and make a huge impact,"
said Julie Mitcham, advocacy coordinator with
Coastal Plain CASA. "I think our communities
need more people volunteering for the better-
ment of their town and making lasting differ-
ences." For information, contact Darcie Nor-

sions that serve communities across the
region, has begun operations. SGNN
aims to strengthen nonprofit organiza-
tions by providing professional devel-
opment training, management tools and
networking that will enhance their abil-
ity to serve their constituencies. The
new organization is an outgrowth of a
leadership training event that the
Harley Langdale Jr. Foundation in Val-
dosta sponsored last year. A nonprofit
leadership conference s scheduled Sept.

Healthy, Cute Snacks for the Fall
How incredibly adorable is this little fella? I absolutely love
it! Of course my child is a student at Georgia Cyber Academy
and we are the Owls but this would be so cute for any gather-
ing and with Fall coming up, it will fit in perfectly. On top of
it being so cute, it is healthy! Studies show that if you fix
fruits and veggies into characters that our children will eat
more of the healthy foods. While I know it is more work, it
seems pretty worth it to me. I would eat everything on this
tray but the celery sticks and ranch dressing. I absolutely love
raw vegetables. There are ties that I go to the grocery store,
buy some veggies, come home and wash them, put them in a
bowl and eat them. They are so good and delicious! Which of
these veggies would you not eat and which ones could you just
eat by the bow full? Happy almost Fall y’all!
