Welcome from Bishop Robert J. Cunningham

It is my honor and privilege to welcome you to this magnificently restored Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Last summer, we invited the people of our diocese to join us in a major restoration of our mother Church. The invitation was not only received but the response, both prayerfully and financially, was positively overwhelming! Some may ask: what attracted people to be a part of this important initiative? The reason, I believe, is that Catholics and non-Catholics alike identify this building as the center of our community and the spiritual home of all.

For well over a century, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception has been home. The story of the Cathedral exemplifies the history of our diocesan church. It represents and speaks to the story of the people within that church, offering a narrative that has been written by the hands of laborers, artisans and donors whose industry and generosity ensured the creation of this wonderful structure. Our Cathedral embodies the history of our Church and exemplifies the history of the people of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse. Since it was first consecrated, the generosity of more than five generations of the faithful has guaranteed the future of our mother church. We are truly its guardians. From this building:

• Priests are ordained and sent forth, from Binghamton to Oswego and Marcellus to Boonville, to minister to our brothers and sisters in faith;

• Oils are consecrated and used to embrace the young in the sacrament of baptism; seal the faith of our youth through the sacrament of confirmation; and provide spiritual and physical healing through the sacrament of anointing the sick; and,

• We gather from throughout our diocese to celebrate the sacraments and many important events that speak to our union in the Mystical Body of Christ.

Today, we open wide the doors and invite all to enter. You will soon see other changes here in the Cathedral. Plans are in the making for special series offered throughout the year— lectures, music and other events— that will attract people of all ages to participate with the Cathedral community. The Cathedral will also extend its hours during the day so people have more time to pray and reflect.

I am most grateful for the prayers, generosity and hard work that have been offered to preserve and restore our treasured home for future generations. May all who enter always find here a warm welcome, a loving home and come to know more deeply the love of God.

The history of the Cathedral

The church was initially constructed in 1874 by Lawrence J. O'Connor, and named Saint Mary's Church. Formerly under the Diocese of Albany, the Diocese of Syracuse was created in 1887. In 1904, Bishop Patrick Ludden selected Saint Mary's Church to become the new Cathedral. Archimedes Russell, Architect was commissioned to expand the new Cathedral designing a new sanctuary and bell tower. For this purpose, the parish purchased property adjacent to the church, and built the Cathedral’s sanctuary.

Renamed The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the new cathedral was consecrated in 1910. For the dedication, Pope Leo XIII gave Bishop Ludden a brick taken from the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. When Bishop Ludden died in 1912, he was buried in the Crypt beneath the Cathedral, where four other bishops and two monsignors, who were Cathedral Rectors, are also buried.

The stained glass windows The windows of the Cathedral were made in 1887 by the Mayer Company in Munich, Germany. The company name appears in the lower corner in a number of the windows. The records are scarce concerning their installation, noting that the cost of all but the sanctuary windows was a grand total of $10,134.00. With the exception, again, of the sanctuary windows and the Rose Window (behind the organ), most all of them portray a saint rather than an event. Thus they encourage us to think about the Communion of Saints and that we are all of one faith which spans the centuries.

The cathedra The Cathedra, the Bishop’s chair, is the chair from which the Cathedral derives its name. The Bishop at the Cathedral gives full expression to the faith-life of the diocesan church. Skillfully constructed, the Cathedra is located so as to be a visible symbol of the bishop’s presence as the leader of the diocesan church. The coat of arms displayed at the top of the Cathedra is the combined coat of arms of the Diocese of Syracuse and Bishop Cunningham’s Coat of Arms.

The coat of arms of the diocese of Syracuse The Diocese of Syracuse coat of arms was chosen by our first bishop Patrick A. Ludden in 1886 when the diocese was erected by Pope Leo XIII (1878-1903). It was taken from the coins of the city of Siracusa, Sicily when the city was part of the Greek Empire. The background is blue with a cross of gold and a silver dolphin pointing downwards on the cross. The crescent, pointing upward, is a symbol of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Recall in Revelation 12:1 where she is described as “a woman clothed with the sun with the moon under her feet and on her head a crown of twelve stars”. This description of the Virgin Mary is depicted in the central window in our Cathedral apse and, if you look closely, you can see the moon, as a crescent, under her feet.

Early mariners were quite superstitious and took comfort in the fact that dolphins, which would always swim next to their boats, brought good fortune. Early Christian mariners associated the dolphin with Christ the Savior who was watching over them at sea. The dolphin pointing downwards, symbolizes the Lord bringing our salvation from His cross. It is quite rare in heraldic depictions to find a character pointing downward.

Bishop Cunningham’s coat of arms Bishop Cunningham’s personal arms are composed of a red field on which is seen a silver chevron to represent a carpenter’s square, for St. Joseph and the chevron contains three black stars that are taken from the Cunningham family coat of arms. Above the chevron is a silver fleur-de-lis for St. Louis, King of France, who was the titular patron of the parish where His Excellency was serving at the time of his call to the episcopacy. Below the fleur-de-lis are two gold oak leaves, taken from the arms of the Diocese of Ogdensburg where Bishop Cunningham served joyfully as bishop. Below the chevron is a Paschal Lamb, termed “Proper,” for “as it appears in nature,” which is taken from the tabernacle door at St. Louis Parish and is

emblematic that it is through the Paschal Mystery, that salvation has come to the world. His motto is taken from the 8th chapter of the Second Vatican Council’s Dogmatic Constitution of the Church, “Lumen Gentium,” and it refers to the teaching of the ancient church fathers that the church is “ECCLESIA MATER NOSTRA,” “Our Mother The Church.”

Order of Blessing the installation of a new episcopal chair Cardinal Dolan: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All make the sign of the cross and reply: Amen. Cardinal Dolan: Peace be with you. All respond: And with your spirit. Cardinal Dolan: Today this new episcopal chair is for the first time set aside for liturgical use. Let us together, my dear brothers and sisters, praise our God and Lord. Out of his goodness toward us, he is present through those who are ordained to fulfill a sacred ministry, in order that through them he may teach, sanctify, and shepherd the faithful. Let us ask God to make his servants ever more worthy to carry out such a holy ministry. Let us pray. All pray briefly in silence. Lord Jesus, with one voice we praise your holy name and raise our hearts to you in prayer. You are the Good Shepherd who came to gather your scattered sheep into one fold. Through those you have chosen as ministers of your truth, feed your faithful, through your chosen shepherds, lead them. Then one day gather both shepherds and flock into the joyous green pastures of eternity, where you live and reign for ever and ever.

All respond: Amen.

Cardinal Dolan places incense in the censer and incenses the chair to be blessed then takes his place at the chair, where he is incensed by a minister. He will then be given holy water to bless the chair, the walls of the church and the people. Bishop Cunningham will join him in this blessing.

Collect Let us pray. Impart to your servants, we pray, O Lord the gift of heavenly grace, that the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin may bring deeper peace to those for whom the birth of her Son was the dawning of salvation. blessing of a new lectern The two readers, one of whom carries the Lectionary for Mass, and the psalmist (cantor) go to the celebrant. The celebrant stands, takes the Lectionary, holds it up before the assembly, and says the following or other suitable words: May the word of God always be heard in this place, as it unfolds the mystery of Christ before you and achieves your salvation within the church. All respond:

Amen. First Reading MicAH 5: 1-4A

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Micah

The LORD says: You, Bethlehem-Ephrathah, too small to be among the clans of Judah, From you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel; Whose origin is from of old, from ancient times. (Therefore the Lord will give them up, until the time when she who is to give birth has borne, And the rest of his brethren shall return to the children of Israel.) He shall stand firm and shepherd his flock by the strength of the LORD, in the majestic name of the LORD, his God; And they shall remain, for now his greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth; he shall be peace.

The word of the Lord. All respond: Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm:

Though I trusted in your mercy, Let me sing of the Lord, Let me heart rejoice in your salvation. “He has been good to me.”

Second Reading: Romans 8: 28-30

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans Brothers and sisters: We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those he predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified.

The word of the Lord. All respond: Thanks be to God.

Gospel Matthew 1: 18-23

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means "God is with us."

The Gospel of the Lord.

All respond: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Acknowledgments

Today, our hearts are gladdened as we celebrate the rededication of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the mother church of the Diocese of Syracuse. The complete restoration of this historic structure would not have been possible without the generous support of over 8,600 donors – laity and clergy – from the Cathedral parish and throughout the diocese. We are most grateful to the many skilled craftsmen brought together by James Breuer of Heuber-Breuer Construction Co., with guidance from James Tuozzolo, Chair of the Diocesan Facility Planning Committee as well as Cathedral and diocesan employees and volunteers who labored diligently and with such dedication; giving of their time and talents to make this day possible. Your efforts have brought forth a truly glorious achievement that will be appreciated for generations to come. We recognize parishioners and all downtown worshipers for their patience while the Cathedral closed its doors for more than four months so that the restoration work could continue safely and uninterrupted. Your anticipation has been rewarded. Special thanks to Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York for your presence among us as the presider for our liturgy. We gratefully acknowledge the bishops of the Province of New York who have celebrated with us today, as well as the many priests, deacons, religious and seminarians who were present. Our celebration was beautifully enhanced by the voices of our special diocesan choir, assembled for the occasion under the direction of Alan Lynch. We very much appreciate the presence of civic leaders who accepted our invitation to be with us and also the work of the Syracuse Police Department for providing security and traffic control. Finally, we are grateful for one another as participants together in this wonderful celebration. May this day be an inspiration for all of us to tell others of this great work and to continue the praise of God in our hearts with resolution to return again and again to this magnificent House of Prayer.

My house shall be a house of prayer, says the Lord:

in that house, everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

Cf. Mt 21:13; Lk 11:10

Listen graciously to the prayers of this family,

who rededicate this church to you:

may it be for your family a house of salvation

and a place for celebration

of your heavenly Sacraments.

Here may the Gospel of peace resound

and the sacred mysteries be celebrated,

so that your faithful,

formed by the word of life and by divine grace

on their pilgrim way through the earthly city,

may merit to reach the eternal Jerusalem.
