sinned. Leviticus 5:5

Is it possible to sin while trying to confess your sin? Over the past three months I have become powerfully aware of a shortcoming in my faith. I have realized that not only do I rarely practice confession of sin but that when I do confess sin it is not a true confession. My prayers sound like this: “God, I am such a sinner. I am so far from you. I repent and ask your forgiveness.” Do you know what the problem is with that prayer? I didn’t actually confess anything wrong.

A mentor of mine calls this the problem of ‘glittering generalities’. We can go on and on using language that sounds repentant without ever mentioning one specific thing we have done wrong. These prayers are a bad habit which leads to a two-fold problem: Not only are we not truly confessing sin, but we do not find God’s healing either.

- A motion to approve a plan to disburse the $100,000 financial gift we received in February was approved by a 53-3 vote with one abstaining.

(See the plan below.)

$100,000 Financial Gift Disbursement Plans At our June 8th annual meeting, the congregation approved a motion to disburse the $100,000 financial gift we received in February. Thanks to all who participated in the listening lunches and offered feedback!

Here is the disbursement plan:

Overall we followed the 10 / 10 / 80 plan. This means 10% tithe, 10% savings, and 80% for ministry.

For the tithe: We decide to give $5,000 to Covenant World Relief and $5,000 to Metrocrest Services. Both of these agencies work to help those in poverty either around the world or in our own backyard.

For the savings: This may be self-explanatory but we put $10,000 to help bolster our reserve fund. Our council has set a goal of $60,000 (two months cash on hand) as a reasonable reserve fund.

Finally, for the 80% ($80,000)

1. $50,000 will go toward our building

a.) $30,000 for the next RENOVATE project

b.) $20,000 for interior improvements for 2014, 2015, and 2016

2. $30,000 will go toward ministries in general but with some focus on outreach

a.) $19,000 will fund Associate Pastor Dieula Previlon’s position for 2014 and 2015

b.) $11,000 will fund ministries for 2014, 2015, and 2016

For 2014 keep your eyes peeled for the following: Upgrades to Fellowship Hall (including a new room

divider) Celebrate Recovery ministry

Small group ministry

Plans for an all-church retreat

Some more meals after church on Sunday mornings

Just a couple of weeks ago, 12 middle school and high school students and two adult leaders drove nearly 300 miles south, contending with torrential rain, stray dogs who needed our help, and Houston traffic, to arrive in Galveston to spend 5 days working in solidarity with the island’s urban poor. Prior to the trip, we spent over half a year exploring the implications of our theme of “Openness” as it relates to mission work and especially to our interactions with and experiences of those in Galveston. Here are some things we learned from the trip:

Our youth are great animal rescuers. (We got an injured dog help in Houston!)

If you need to test the effectiveness of paint rollers, the back of Corbin Robertson’s neck is a great spot to try them out on.

Engaging, empowering, and equipping ought to be fundamental to Christian community development and mission work.

The LORD does amazing things in and through those whom society oftentimes writes off.

Either our youth are all surfing prodigies or Haley is the world’s best surfing coach…(I’m inclined to believe the latter )

People in Galveston are more than happy to line dance with strange groups of youth in public places.

People in Galveston are also more than happy to accept marriage proposals from strange youth whom they have never met.

One of the most powerful acts of ministry and social action is to allow those who too often have no voice and no choice to speak and take the lead.

Our youth are incredibly patient, gentle, encouraging, loving, and adaptable.

God is is using a community of the urban poor, 5 staff members at Galveston Urban Ministries, and groups of teenagers like ours to change an entire island!

When we are open to doing the things that make us uncomfortable for the sake of another person, we are not only being Christ-like, we are also being part of the healing of broken societies that God desires.

Galveston mosquitoes are huge.

Unimaginable things can happen when you are open to letting God and others change you.

Our youth know every single song ever written and will prove it to you by yelling the lyrics as loudly as possible.

We are all TOV (very good, whole, lovely) in God’s eyes!

The power of self-giving love is infinitely stronger than the power of domination.

On behalf of CREW youth group, thank you, Redeemer, for all of your prayers, support, generosity, and love that made possible this life-changing trip and the relationships that will continue out of it.

In Christ, CREW

Help Us Now: We need donations!

We will be creating different habitats: tropical, ocean, and bugs! If you have any decorations or materials you’d be able to loan to us or donate, here are some ideas:

Stuffed or inflatable animals, insects, sea creatures, etc. They do not have to be “real” – our theme is Weird Animals, so anything unusual or weird can be used.

Uplights or clip lights (to highlight plants)

Chenille stems (pipe cleaners) – bright colors

Tissue paper – pink, purple, blue, light blue, green, light green, white

Clear 2-liter bottles (empty)

Duct tape (regular, green, black)

A complete list of needed items is posted on the Donations bulletin board in the east hallway (leading to the children's wing and the prayer room). Pick the papers of the items you want to donate, take them home, find or purchase the items, and put them in the red bin in the foyer. Be sure to put your name on the items you want back!

We need volunteers to help decorate and set up! There are printed workday calendars on the display table in the foyer – if you would like to help with decorating, please take one!

We will have workdays at Redeemer during the day and some evenings

We will help Holy Covenant United Methodist Church on June 30 through July 4 from 9am-12 noon. Then they will donate their decorations to us!

Even if you can only help an hour here or there, it would be greatly appreciated!
