Celebrating Our Graduates!

The members and friends of Memorial Baptist Church would like to offer our congratulations to these young people, who are receiving degrees from high school, college, and other institutions. We are happy for each of them, and want them to know that our love

and prayers will follow them as they pursue their dreams and progress in their lives.

Claire Peasley...

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans” (Proverbs 16:3). Claire Peasley completes her high school education in May. She is the oldest daughter of Steve and Melissa Peasley. It has been her greatest honor to serve the congregation of Memorial Baptist Church through worship, “singing to the Lord with gratitude in [her] heart” (Colossians 3:16). She will continue this service at her church and with the pep band at the South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City, where she will be studying this fall. Please keep Claire in your prayers, that college becomes a special time for her to draw closer to God, and that she will be transformed by the renewing of her mind to know His will (Romans 12:1).

Raegan Harnish...

Over the last few years, Raegan Harnish has maintained a busy schedule, being a very active participant in 4-H, FFA, and also working in various jobs. Raegan’s plans include beginning college in the fall; and she is leaning toward one of several possible careers in health and medicine. The Memorial Baptist Church family sends our hearty congratulations and best wishes to Raegan; and it will be our pleasure to support her with our prayers as she begins this new and exciting chapter in her life, continuing her academic pursuits in preparation for her chosen career.

Loren Mann... Loren Mann has had a very successful career at Wheatland High School. She has excelled in FFA, placing 9th in the nation in agronomy. During her senior year, she again attended FFA Nationals, placing 10th with her team in environmental natural resources and earning 6th place in the individual rankings in that same field. She has played basketball, and has also participated in high school rodeos. Loren is planning on studying nursing at the University of Wyoming, with an end goal of becoming a nurse anesthetist. We would like to extend our congratulations to Loren, and to wish her God’s blessings as she pursues her future goals.

Madissen Hester... Madissen is graduating from the University of Wyoming with her Masters degree in English. She was able to complete her masters while working on a post-baccalaureate teaching certification in English, which included student teaching. Maddie was offered a position as an English instructor at Sheridan High School in Sheridan, Wyoming, which she has accepted. She is excited to begin the next chapter in Sheridan, and is extremely thankful for all of the support she has been given from MBC. Maddie’s church family wishes her many blessings from our Heavenly Father as she launches her teaching career.

Khrysie Snyder... Congratulations to Khrysie Snyder, who has recently been awarded her Associate’s Degree in Nursing. Please keep Khrysie in your prayers as she prepares for the National Council Licensure Examination, which she is scheduled to take in June. She continues to have numerous job interviews, and is hopeful that she will soon land a position in her field. The long-term plans of this dedicated young woman include possibly becoming a flight nurse or working in an emergency department. Khrysie is grateful for your prayers and encouragement. We all want to congratulate Khrysie on her achievements.

MINISTRY AT MBC CONTINUES DESPITE

PANDEMIC CLOSURES

Messages from a number of our ministry leaders…

MBC YOUTH MINISTRY UPDATE…

Dear Church Family, I have missed being able to see everyone in the church and worship corporately with all of you. I have especially missed the students in our church’s student ministry. For the past few weeks, the student ministry has been meeting twice a week over video chat on a program called Zoom. When I initially thought about doing this, I was concerned that no one would join; and that it was going to be a total disaster. However, I was wrong. The students showed up, eager to see and spend time with each other. Instead of spending one hour together, we are now spending anywhere from two to three hours online with each other, having a lesson and playing games. During this time, we have had multiple students in the community, who have never attended our church, join us for Youth. We have also had a few students join who live out of state. I am proud of our students who have continued to use this time to reach out to their friends who are lost. I pray that, when all of this social distincing is over and the students can resume meeting in person, this ministry will continue to grow. May you all continue to stay safe and healthy.

Blessings, Alma Rivero MBC Youth Minister ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

HIGH SCHOOL LUNCH MINISTRY…

For many years, teams of volunteers at Memorial Baptist Church have served a free lunch to High School students every Monday when school is open. The High School Lunch program is done for the year of 2019-2020. We had a good year, and are looking forward to next year. We fed between 40 and 60 high school kids every Monday that school was in session. Our teams are planning on providing the lunches when school starts up in the fall. I want to thank all the volunteers who work so hard to help feed these kids. Thank you, thank you, thank you! We could not have done it without you. Hope to see all of you next year!

Charlotte Klein High School Lunch Coordinator ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

FELLOWSHIP SNACK MINISTRY & FOOD SERVICE MINISTRY…

A group of volunteers provides a variety of delicious homemade or store-bought snacks for those who gather on Sunday mornings. The volunteers take turns on a rotational basis to bring the snacks, get them set out, and make sure that the coffee keeps flowing. But, when COVID19 entered the picture, gathering at the church was put on hold and the coffee stopped flowing. Now that restrictions are easing, we will once again be able to gather in a limited fashion for worship services; but, as a safety precaution, there will be no snacks or coffee at this time. As the danger of COVID19 continues to diminish, at some point we will be able to resume the snacks, and the coffee will start to flow again. When that time comes, the snack committee is always looking for new recruits. If you love to cook, what a perfect opportunity to show off your delectable delights! If cooking is not your thing and you would rather let the store do all the preparation, we would still welcome you to be a part of this snack ministry. (You will be reimbursed for the receipts which you submit.)

Church fellowship just isn’t complete without opportunities to gather over a meal. Memorial Baptist Church provides ample opportunities for that to happen. When a month has 5 Sundays, the Lord’s Supper is observed on the final Sunday of that month. Following the service, the church gathers for a potluck, an opportunity to bring out the best of everyone’s favorite potluck recipes. At some potluck meals, the favorite recipes may be mostly salads or mostly desserts, but there is always an abundance of food. No one ever goes away hungry! ~ continued ~

Page 4: THE MEMORIAL MESSENGER - Wheatlandmbcwheatland.org/downloads/Newsletter.pdf · THE MEMORIAL MESSENGER Memorial Baptist Church exists to glorify God; and is committed to helping each

Overseeing that event, as well as other gatherings involving a meal is Memorial Baptist’s kitchen committee. The committee makes sure that tables are set up, the food is set out, and things are cleaned up and put away afterward. In addition to Fifth Sunday potlucks and other events involving food through the year, we look forward to a Soup & Pie gathering after the Children’s Christmas Program in December, a Church Thanksgiving Dinner on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, and other occasions when a meal just seems necessary. This May, with five Sundays, would have been the month for another potluck; but, with the COVID19 virus, that meal may have to be put on hold. But the day will come when we will no longer have the social distincing, and we will be able to gather once again for fellowship around a meal. To anyone who feels called to be a part of the kitchen committee, we would certainly welcome you.

If you would like to be involved in the snack ministry or with the kitchen committee or both, please contact Rick Geringer (331-8813).

Looking forward to when we can gather together again in fellowship and worship! Rick Geringer MBC Food Service Chairman

“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” ~ 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

MBC WOMEN’S MINISTRY…

Our women’s ministry here at Memorial Baptist Church enjoys regular Bible study, prayer time, and fellowship with each other. We have one study on Tuesday evenings, led by Linda Patterson; and another on Wednesday mornings, led by Julia Farris. We were toward the end of a study of Gideon by Priscilla Shirer when COVID19 concerns changed our plans. At this time, we are considering options that would allow us to complete the study. We will be in touch when a plan comes together.

During the past couple of months, the following verses have been in my thoughts: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” ~ Lamentations 3:22-23

The Lord’s great love and faithfulness have been evident in the continued good health of family and friends, as well as timely phone calls or texts of encouragement and the opportunities for unique ministry. I see the hand of the Lord daily in the beauty of nature as our land reawakens this spring. I am particularly grateful for the leadership of Pastor Chris during this time. And a special praise for Mike Esselman and all of his behind the scenes efforts!

I am very much looking forward to seeing at least 50 of you soon! Linda Patterson ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

MBC CHILDREN’S MINISTRY…

Children in Action, which had been meeting at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoons, has been on hold for quite some time. We will be slowly returning as parents feel safe to send their kids again. Before having to cancel CIA, we had just finished a series called, “I Am”; and then we were about to move into “The Armor of God.” However, we didn’t have a chance to start that series; but will start it once we all can meet again. Work packets have been sent home to the kids via mail, as well as gifts for each child to let them know that I am thinking of them. Our first Sunday back will be our big “We’re Back/Summer/Easter Celebration!” I look forward to all the amazing things that will happen this summer in CIA, as well as a big family event in July. I miss all you kids so much, and can’t wait to meet with you again.

MBC SUNDAY SCHOOL MINISTRY…

Dear Church Family, ~ continued ~

Page 5: THE MEMORIAL MESSENGER - Wheatlandmbcwheatland.org/downloads/Newsletter.pdf · THE MEMORIAL MESSENGER Memorial Baptist Church exists to glorify God; and is committed to helping each

Although we have had to take a pause from meeting on Sundays, church goes on! As Sunday School Director and one of our custodians (along with Patty Klier), I haven’t been able to do anything in the building; but I continue to pray for each of you. I am hoping that we can come up with something for Sunday School until we can meet again. Until then, I encourage you to read a bit of the Bible with those you love, and to discuss how you can apply what you read to today’s living.

Some helpful verses I would like to encourage you to read during this time are:

Second Chronicles 7:13-14 begins by talking about plagues, and ends with God’s power to heal and restore our land. Psalm 91 is a classic and often-quoted passage about God’s protection for those who seek refuge in the Most High God.

Much love in Christ, Lena Mohn ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

LADIES’ BIRTHDAY LUNCHEONS…

Memorial Baptist Church ladies meet once a month at a local restaurant to celebrate our birthdays. This has been recorded as starting in April of 2007, but it may have been earlier. If it is your birthday that month, the group pays for your lunch. The ladies give to the “kitty” so that everyone can receive a free lunch in their birthday months, even if they don’t attend the luncheon every month. Diane Wight keeps us “on track”, sending out reminder postcards and providing birthday cards for us to sign for those who cannot attend each month.

Fellowship is the main course, and a good time is had by all. God blesses our time together, and we look forward to the lunch on the second Wednesday of each month. Please join us next time if you can.

COLLEGE STUDENT CARE PACKAGE MINISTRY…

Who doesn’t like to get a surprise in the mail? We began the college care package ministry to let our students know we are thinking of them and praying for them. We try to send three care packages a year to our college students. The boxes are filled with treats and items that the students can use. These boxes are usually centered around a theme such as “items to keep you warm” and “one smart cookie.” We always include a Bible verse and encouraging word for the students. This year we were unable to send our last box, as the school year was cut short. Sometimes we collect items; however, for this last box, we were collecting monetary donations to purchase the items. If you placed a donation in the envelope in the church office, you are welcome to get it back. Otherwise, we will put it aside to use for our first box next year. We would like to send a big thank you for donating and supporting the college student care package ministry. We could not do this without your help.

Reneé McKain and Becky Benton …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. NURSERY MINISTRY…

Nursery Children, Workers

Playing, Learning, Growing An important ministry.

Volunteers

Nursery is provided during the worship service on Sunday mornings for children newborn to Kindergarten. The nursery is designed to provide a safe, fun time for young children while their parents are enjoying church services. We cannot run this ministry without the help of our great volunteers. We would like to have more volunteers, so that our nursery workers only miss church services once every two or three months. We are looking forward to the time when we will be able to reopen our nursery. If you would like to be part of this wonderful ministry, please call or text Heather Isabell at 307-331-2048.

HOPE FOR TIMES LIKE THESE …adapted from an article by Barry Kauffman

We live in very troubling times. Terrorism is increasing on a worldwide scale. Wars and threats of wars abound. A deadly disease is spreading and killing thousands. Christians are being killed, persecuted, and forced to flee their homes. Fires, floods, and earthquakes are devastating large areas. Judges are overturning Biblical standards. It is easy to become discouraged, worried, and fearful. But, in a society which no longer has absolutes, believers do have absolutes upon which they can rest. In times like these, we need the Bible. In times like these, we need a Savior. In times like these, we need a solid Rock and an Anchor. And, thankfully, we do have these to build our lives upon and to depend upon.

In 1944, a mother of five and a pastor’s wife named Ruth Caye Jones was concerned about the state of the world. Stress and strain were part of daily living during the height of World War II. Hitler, the Nazi army, and the Japanese military were waging war around the globe. At home and completing her daily household tasks, Mrs. Jones was burdened and stressed by the turmoil and evil in the world. She was moved by reading the words of 2 Timothy 3:1…”This know also that in the last days, perilous times will come.” As she read those words, she felt a “direct inspiration from the Holy Spirit.” A self-taught pianist and organist, she jotted lyrics and music on a small notepad that she had in her apron pocket. Some of the words to the song were also inspired by Hebrews 6:19, which says, “This hope we have as an anchor of

the soul, both sure and steadfast…” Since that day, this song has been a blessing to countless Christians at special times of need. It has brought comfort and encouragement, has challenged Christian workers, and has drawn many to salvation. Mrs. Jones, herself, experienced the consolation of these words as she spent time recovering from serious surgery just a few years after writing the song.

When she watched George Beverly Shea sing her song on a Billy Graham telecast, tears came to her eyes; and she said, “I can’t believe I had any part in writing this song. I just feel that God gave it to me, and I gave it to the world.” Ruth Caye Jones wrote 15 other songs, but “In Times Like These” became her best known. Today, we continue to live in perilous times. We, as a society, have grown further and further from God. The Solid Rock is still there, and always has been; but too many people have chosen to throw their anchor on sinking sand. These words, written over 75 years ago, ring truer today than they ever have. In our lives, we will encounter storms, some of which may threaten to tear our whole ship apart. But, if your anchor grips the Solid Rock, there is no storm that can destroy you. Rest from the turmoil of these times, and claim these truths…

In times like these, you need a Savior In times like these, you need an anchor;

Be very sure, be very sure Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

This Rock is Jesus, yes, He’s the One; This Rock is Jesus, the only One!

Be very sure, be very sure Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

In times like these, you need the Bible,

In times like these, O be not idle; Be very sure, be very sure

Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

This Rock is Jesus, yes, He’s the One; This Rock is Jesus, the only One!

Be very sure, be very sure Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

In times like these, I have a Savior,

In times like these, I have an Anchor; I’m very sure, I’m very sure

My anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock! This Rock is Jesus, yes, He’s the One;

This Rock is Jesus, the only One! Be very sure, be very sure

Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

“Expensive People”

Several years ago, Memorial Day found me at the Pearl Harbor Memorial, an humbling reminder of the incredible price of our liberty. This holiday was instituted to remind Americans that our freedoms and our way of life have been purchased at a tremendous cost. We are expensive people.

As time has passed, Memorial Day has become less of a day of remembrance and more of a signal – a signal that school is out, pools are open, that it’s time to fire up the grill, and time to go to the lake. None of these things is bad. In fact, those who purchased our freedoms died so that we could enjoy these things. But to forget those who paid the price for our freedoms is not only unfortunate and ungrateful, it is dangerous. While we may continually declare that each person has the right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”, we must understand that it took great sacrifice to win us these rights! We are expensive people.

As Christians, we have Memorial Day each time we remember Jesus’ death and resurrection until He returns. It is a reminder that we are expensive people – people bought at a great price. We have been sacrificially loved by the Creator of the universe. We are precious to Him. Let’s be “valuable” people…people who know they are precious to God and live with passionate commitment for His purposes. People who look forward to their ultimate victory while they live sacrificially for God’s glory in the present. ~ adapted from an article by Phil Ware
