VOL. 51 , NO. 21 MERCYHURST COLLEGE MONDAY, APRIL 23,1979MSG Elections WednesdayPresidential CandidatesSteveFrisina "-' V1|n"After serving two years in theMercyhurst Student Govern-ment, I decided to announce mycandidacy for the office ofpresident. |"During the pastiHwo years Ihave had the opportunity to learna great deal about the school. Myexperiences in government haveranged from attending activitiesto helping kplan the studentbudget. I have enjoyed my termas treasurer; :< the position hasenabled me to affect somechanges - the most notable beingthe *'activity day " coming up onM a y i u ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ * ^ ^ ^ ^

"As president I feel that myfirst responsibility would be tomake the student governmentmore visible to the student body.In the past the students have teenunexposed to many of the. issuesand decisions which have passedthrough ^the government. Therefore, in order to form aneffective link between, th estudents and their government, comm unications will have* toimprove. j S * $$ ^j"The second responsibility ofthepresident, as I see it, will be tobuild a stronger sense of com-munity on the campus. First, a fullcommitment of ? my time andenergies would be 3 necessary.Second, I must try to representall students justly. And finally, both the students and the studentgovernment should benefit frommy term of office. I am confidentthat the commitment I amprepared to make, if elected, would satisfy each of these aims.I "Goals I have set to reach inmy-term of office include: afrelff^r" trr^or^rrT^nt ^y*?rwlerit-representatives in theirrespective departments; anactive search for more students, residents and nonresidents alike, who will be involved in putting onactivities of their own interest.Through the accomplishment of(these first two goals I hope to geta more representative idea ofjust what the students on campuswould like to see and would like tobecome actively involved iii&."Obviously one cannot pleaseall of the people all of the time, but,I believe that we should bediverse enough to touch more ofthe various student interests oncampus. I feel that myconcentration in communicationswill be of the utmost importanceto next year's student govern-ment. MSG Elections - 1The readership should know =iright off the bat - that this yearthe Merciad will not he endorsing icandidates for: MSG offices.]There are several interesting(and legitimate) reasons for this, jFor one, I won'tj judge thejcandidates : solely on their;prepared i written speeches, which appear in this week'sissue. W hen I choose to vote for a*candidate-it encomoasses a 100per cent reason. Their writtenspeeches are only worth 40 percent, k Another 40 per cent will sur facefor the candidates of my choiceafter they deliver their speechesat the MSG meeting and in thecafeteria. I have to see how theyhandle public speaking and 'peerpressure' - in the form ofquestions from the audience. %The final 20 per cent will begarnered by the candidates fromnow well they have conductedtheir campaign. As par for thecourse, there are no exceptionsibis year - candidates have theirnames (and faces) on posterseverywhere. Some of themdisplay first-rate -creativethinking - others, typicalpoliticalrhetoric. One candidate is evenadvertising in the 'John.' You canmake of mat what you will (andsome graffiti artists alreadyhave.) ? tg |K,> A Personally, I'm glad theMerciad doesn't have to endorseany particular candidates. Iwoulqn*jLwant to endorse can-didates and then discover thattheir opponents lost by only ahandful of votes . More, thanlikely, the losing candidate wouldhave not getting the Merciad'sendorsement to use as a whippingstool. That's happened in the

past. This way's cool - and nofeelings will be hurt. W 3 3 PSurprisingly, there are someinteresting facts of lifesurrounding this year's election. One that com es readily to mind isthat of the four offices, the vicepresidency has the most can-didates (four). If this trendcontinues and spreads nation-wide. Walter Mondale could be introuble at next year'sDemocratic National Convention. Not surprisingly, there aresome situations I would like tosee chan gedj concerning MSGelections. For one, the campaignshould last longer than it does. There should also be debates (atleast in the race for president)featured. Finally, the candidateshaving to speak in the cafeteriashould be eliminated. Probablythe greatest phobia many sufferfrom is * speaking before | anaudience. The cafeteria scenehas the effect of a zoo: the can-didates are reduced to parallelthe image of an upcoming comichaving to "do his thing" in frontof (largely) an unsympatheticcrowd who only want to eat Theonly thing j missing at ; thosecafeteria speeches J are \thehecklers. \ * wS^y ? ? ^\ Election Questions -^."^-.x*.I'd Is it true that a commuterstudent could never be electedMSG president?2.) Why is it that the candidatefor treasurer is running officiallyunopposed? Is it because peoplelove money, but not many knowhow to handle it properly? F *33.)|Why is it that there is nowoman candidate-for MSGpresident again this year? Is theMSG presidency still a "man's"job?

1 STAFF mmWSPEAKOUTB Well, another year is almostover and it's time to elect of-ficials for ; the* Mercy hurstStudent Government again. So who will we get this time? Ifthe voter turn out is as usual, w ewon't have to worry about a tigh trace - those who vote usuallyagree. But what kind of "ad-ministration"! will MSG obtain? Will we h ave another year likethe past one? Will the majorissues of the college - budget c uts, tuition increases and drastic cutsin faculty and staff J* beoverlooked by MSG for anotheryear? ?Sp '$*In their search for a "cause" ,will the officers find only another"act iv i ty day" - are you planningon participating or blowing off?m i e n t he tables a r e folded andthe ballots counted will we have ayear of cute jokes - h a v e y o uchecked out the bathrooms yet -and was ted money o r more than100 people coming to activitieswhich is a "true lack of apathy"?We've lost s ight of wh y MSGexists and what can b e done withi t s p o w e r . Probably theusual. A minority of students wil lelect M S G officers , represen-tatives wil l support whomever iselected, and the res t ; of thecollege wil l forg et; about M SGuntil next year's election. That's

    politics I guess . 33g3 jIf more than 50 percent of theeligible student body vote thisWednsday, I'll take back m ycomplaints Of apathy at Mer-cy hurst. g S R 5J J S P3 $

There is one note ofimportance about me that Ibelieve you should know -1 am a"commuter.^ ^ *i "My main concern is gettingstudents involved. Even more, commuter involvement! Some of you maythink the job of V.P. is lust a title-holding position and this is un-derstandable since a lot of thework is done behind the scenesbut I think the job of V.P. is whatyou make of it and how involvedyou are depends on how m uch ofyour energies and your self youare willing to put into the job."I'm, not running for thisposition for the sa ke of the title ora chance to be known, I careabout this school - where it'sbeen, where it is and, more im-1 portantly, where it's going. Thepositions I've held this pasfcyearnave helped me a lot in terms ofgaining a workable knowledgeboth in government and the wholeschool in general. As a senator,I've learned to appreciate andrespect details and how im-portant it is that thry are welltaken care of. As V.P. of SAC I'vecome to realize the importance ofgiving the students what theywant while staying within thelegal and financial limitations. I^also learned how to listen to a-variety of students so I could geta broader view of whaf thestudents wanted. My job as aPACE student assistant helpedme to develop 'i the skillsnecessary for working with| people and also how to utilize myf talents and how effective I can be^when I am operating at fullcapacity. w*i -ft $ &s AThis year really opened mySeyes to alot of things that we can| d o - but it will take all of us1 working together.
