Pastoral Reflections by Father Costas “How good it is to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing praises to Your name, O most High; to declare Your loving-kindness in the morning, and Your faithfulness every night.” (Ps. 92:1-2) Indeed, GRATITUDE should be part of our daily prayer as Orthodox Christians. Whenever we pray to God and offer our thanks to Him, we rec-ognize Him as our Creator and Pro-vider of “every good and perfect gift,” as we recite in the Divine Liturgy.

Both the Old and New Testament are full of admoni-tions on giving thanks to God.

“Always and for everything give thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God our Father.” (Eph. 5:20)

“What have you that you did not receive?” (Eph. 5:20)

“It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord.” (Ps. 92:1)

“O give thanks to the Lord for He is good; For His mercy endures forever!” (Ps. 107:1)

Thankfulness is a basic ingredient of Christian charac-ter. It is one of the earliest words we try to teach our children when they first learn to speak. Indeed, we should practice this virtue in your daily life and with every situation that we come into contact with. As a community, we also have so much to be thankful about. We raise our heart to God in gratitude for the many blessings seen and unseen that impact our lives. We thank God for our community of St. Paul where for forty nine years the name of the Lord has been praised and glorified.

Each day we have a choice to make when we wake up - will we express gratitude and thanksgiving to God for this particular day with all the blessings that await us, or will we choose to focus on the problems and uncertainties of life, allowing our particular worries to control our worldview? We all know positive and up-lifting people who live life with a grateful, vibrant spirit and thus, radiate contagious joy, inner content-ment and a deep happiness. These people encourage, build up and nourish all those whom they encounter. They stand in stark contrast to others who choose to focus on the negative, who complain about the unfair-ness of life, grumble about all that they don’t have, and who drain the spirit out of life.

As we continue to build upon the foundations that have been laid by our forefathers, we do so with a grateful heart. We are indeed grateful for all the sacri-fices and hard work they put forth so that today we can have a beautiful church to worship in. But it’s not enough simply to be grateful for the past. We must also be committed to continue their dream and look to the future. Our community has grown considerably through these years, not only in membership, but also in the variety of activities it offers to its members of all ages. We have so many ministries and so many indi-viduals that are part of them. This, my dear people is the fulfillment of the dreams of the founders of this blessed community; to see all coming together to wor-ship our Lord, and to partake in the life of this com-munity. And for all these blessings we truly give thanks. Saints throughout history displayed this joyous and gracious spirit despite any and every injustice, diffi-culty, and challenge they faced. They understood the fundamental element of an authentic Christian life - that God is with us always, and will never abandon us. Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ! And understanding this created a grateful heart! St. Paul the Apostle, and our patron Saint, reminds us in I Thessalonians 5:15, “In everything give thanks”. And so, I give thanks to God for His Holy Church that continues to nurture us in our faith and in our daily walk towards our salvation. I thank Him for each and every one of you; for your love for Christ and the sup-port that you give to His Holy Church. And finally, I thank Him for always looking upon all of us with mercy and compassion.

Dear Father Costas and Father Michael, I want to thank you for your visits and the encourage-

ment you gave me during a difficult time.

To my church family, I was deeply touched by the

many cards and flowers I received. And of course , the

candy. God bless all of you now and always.

Affectionately,

Angie Kornelakis

Sunday School Director Update ~ Presvytera Nicole

The month of November brings a new monthly theme in the Twelve Major Feast days of the Orthodox Church - the Entrance of the Theotokos to the Temple. Each class will learn about this feast during the month. As we did last year, we are challenging our students to learn something age appropriate outside of class on their own time, at their own pace. Once they have met that achievement, they will receive a small gift and their name in The Messenger. We congratulate three students in the preschool class who have learned to make the sign of the cross: * Isabella Downing * Joseph Gaudio * Joey Mozden * Ellia Whitacre Our new 3 year old class has been so successful! Since the first day of class, there have been a minimum of 10 children with their parent. The attendance has been so great that we needed to move them into the teen room! Please remember, that this is parent/child class. On November 8th, we will be participating in a Philoptochos Make a Difference Day. It is an inter-generational program where the Philoptochos mem-bers do a service project with our youth. This year, we will collect items for ZOE for Life!, specifically, Zoe House. On November 8th, please bring in an item or items for babies from birth to one year old. Items needed includes diapers, wipes, clothes, socks, blan-kets, onsies, etc. We are also beginning to plan for the Christmas Pag-eant which will take place on Sunday December 13th. The pageant will involve ALL STUDENTS, either with a part or as a chorus member. We will have two prac-tices: November 29th right after church is dismissed (so it will be a short lesson and the remainder of class time will be upstairs) and December 6th during Sun-day School in the teen room (so all children can then participate in the St. Nicholas Breakfast). We also continue to keep attendance and will award those with three or less absences and perfect attend-ance. See you in Sunday School!

Greek School News ~ Kathy Glaros

Our first two months of school are now complete and we are off to a great start! Our school is experiencing a wonderful growth and continues to progress and ed-ucate. We are extremely proud of our young learners. Alt-hough they are young in age, they are being exposed to the Greek culture, religion and language. Throughout the school year, our students have many opportunities to participate in skits, plays and monologues during celebrations such as "OXI Day", " Christmas Day", In-dependence Day" and "Commencement Exercises". Our students not only learn to read, speak and write the Greek language, but also gain an immense appreci-ation of our history and culture. OXI DAY was October 28th and our children had the opportunity to learn the significance of the day with a video, featuring His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America recalling his personal experience in Greece during WWII. Our Greek School will host it's annual Open House on December 14, 2015. I would like to invite all parents to attend our first parent-teacher conference to meet with the teachers and discuss ways for improvements in the areas of concerns. Reports cards go home the same day with PARENTS ONLY. I look forward to seeing all of you. While the parents are in conferences with the teachers, our children will learn how to make kou-lourakia, one of their most favorite experiences. On December 13, 2015, our children will be singing Christmas carols in Greek following the Divine Litur-gy. Please join us to celebrate together the wonder of the Christmas Season. As the year goes on, I encourage parents to keep in-formed! Please check your child's progress regularly, watch for updates on upcoming events and continue to reinforce good attendance habits with your children. With the ongoing effort and support from our parents, we are sure to provide a successful year for all. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at (216)524-1766. To you and your families " Happy Thanksgiving "

Choir

Come one, come all and join our great choir at St. Paul! If you can carry a tune and are able to attend a weekly rehearsal, we would love to have you join our group. We have openings in all four parts: soprano / alto / tenor / bass. You don’t have to know Greek because everything is phonetically written. Have questions? Call our director, Vaso Boukis at 440.526.4968. It is a blessing for us to enhance all of our beautiful Orthodox services through our music/choir ministry. Shortly we will be rehearsing Christmas music with special attention being given to music for our beauti-ful Pan-Orthodox Christmas concert in December.

St. Paul Hellenic Dancers Eleni Johnson

Hellenic Dance Director

The Hellenic Dancers are excited to be taking a group of Junior and Senior dancers to this year’s Folk Dance Festival in Pittsburgh, November 14 and 15. Every year, when we attend this event, we learn valuable in-struction, reconnect with other Greek Orthodox Youth from sister churches and enjoy beautiful performances by our peers! Registration forms for our new year are still coming in. It is important to fill out a new registration form every year due to contact information changing. Registration payment was due October 31, 2015. If you still need to register your dancer, please do so immediately by go-ing to the church website and filling it out online. Our next practice is Sunday, November 8th. There are no practices scheduled in December. In January we go back to more regular practices. Those practices are for ALL the Beginners and Juniors as well as Seniors that are new to the Senior group in the past two years. Please make every effort to attend practice. These prac-tices are the ones that allow the instructors to really take the time to teach the steps and give the dancers valuable instruction. In late winter the instructors tend to start to move a little faster and without the basic stepping it may be harder for your dancer. I wanted to ask all the St. Paul parishioners to be mind-ful of using the exit doors on the far side of the hall when dance practice is going on. The Junior group has doubled in size this year and is also a very young group. When parishioners leave through those doors it is very distracting to the dancers who are trying to learn. There will be signs posted on the doors letting everyone know that practice is in session. We are ask-ing to only have it be a handicap exit during practice time. Thank you. Wishing everyone a beautiful Fall season!

A motion to adjourn the meeting was then made by Rhonee Iula and seconded by Kathy Nikolaou. Mo-tion passed. The meeting was adjourned at 7:40 PM.

NOVEMBER 2015 PAGE 17

St. Nektarios the Wonderworker November 9

St. Nektarios of Aegina, one of the most beloved and popular modern saints of Greece, is celebrated on No-vember 9th. He is not only loved because many miracles have happened through his prayers since his death in the early 1900s, but also because he offers inspiring lessons in humility, patience, love, holiness!

St Nektarios came from a poor family in 19th century Greece, and yet through a gen-erous benefactor, was able to receive an education and eventually became a priest. He quickly rose up in the Church and be-came the Bishop of Pentapolis, serving a large Greek community in Egypt. The love of the people and his popularity grew so quickly though, that some bishops and oth-er church authorities became quite jealous of him. They slandered him to the Patriarch of Alexan-dria, and he was unjustly sent away from his diocese and exiled from Egypt.

Upon his arrival in Greece, the slanders followed him and he continued to endure unjust persecution from fellow clergy. He was not allowed to preach or serve in the Church for a long period of time. Eventually, he became the Dean of the Rizario Seminary in Athens, but even there some school trustees slandered him and eventually got him removed. Even after he moved to the island of Aegina, where he founded a women’s monastery, enemies continued to falsely ac-cuse him with lies, slander, and ridicule.

Throughout all his unjust suffering, he never tried to defend himself. He would say, “What did I do that they hate me so? And yet, what did Jesus do that they hated him so much that they even crucified him.” St Nektarios pre-ferred to endure suffering than accuse another, and possibly shame them. “If God allows tribulation, then it is for the salvation of our souls… I shall have patience and trust in the Lord.”

Through these trials and tribulations, St Nektarios at-tained the gift of extreme humility. His sufferings led him to be a man of continual and fervent prayer. He would often keep all night vigils, and prayed the Jesus Prayer continuously. He was a man of discipline, fasting strictly, living simply, and never allowing him-self to indulge in any luxuries.

Once three students at the seminary fought with one another. When they were called in front of the dean, St. Nektarios announced to them that he himself would begin a three day total fast, and if they weren’t reconciled by the end of the three days, he would con-tinue his fast until they all repented.

Another time two janitors had a fight with one another. St Nektarios told them to re-solve the issue, or he himself would begin doing their job and cleaning the toilets. “There exists no job beneath a person,” he would say. Years later, one of these janitors was hospitalized for several months. When the man was afraid that he would lose his job due to his absence, St. Nektarios told him not to worry. Then, for following months, St Nektarios himself began doing all the work of the janitor late at night, sav-ing the position of the worker until he would be able to return.

St Nektarios understood that pride was the beginning of distancing oneself from God. Pride enters a per-son’s heart through the door of irreverence and igno-rance. “When you hear praise, turn your thoughts to the Lord and pray that he will erase them from your memory. Remember, nothing is ours.”

A picture taken of the saint while liturgizing at his beloved monastery in Aegina.
