Pastor Scott’s Message…
It is hard to believe that it has been almost six months since I began my ministry
with you! It is our sixth month-i-versary!! How should we celebrate such an occasion?
I suppose that we could create a photo display depicting all of the events of the past
six months … worship services, baptisms, new members, weddings, fairs, fundraisers, fellowship
events! That would be fun. So many wonderful moments come to mind.
Or, we could celebrate the previous six months by looking forward to the next six
months. We have a number of exciting events and programs in store. It has been a year of firsts,
and I am excited about all of the things that I get to experience with you for the first time: our
first Lent, our first Easter, our first Confirmation Sunday, our first Vacation Bible School.
In addition to all of these meaningful and exciting programs and ministries, there
are a couple of others that you can put on your calendars. On Sunday, April 19, we will welcome
the group Southern Rail to our 10:00 AM worship service. The service will be a bluegrass Gospel
service. I have hosted them several times in the past and they are wonderful!
We finally have a date for my Installation Service. Details are still being worked
out, but please save Sunday, April 26, on your calendars. The service will likely be in the
afternoon and I am looking forward to making it “official”!
Looking a little further forward on the calendar, I am working with author Roland
Merullo to schedule a speaking engagement here at First Parish Church. Mr. Merullo has written
over twenty books including, Breakfast With Buddha, American Savior, Talk Funny Girl, and
Golfing With God. His books are witty and engaging, and also have threads of faith and
introspection woven through them. We are looking at a possible date in August. I will keep you
posted but go ahead and circle the whole month!
As I wrote in my annual report, I am also hoping to schedule a number of small
gatherings here at the church and in people’s homes so that I can continue to hear and learn your
stories. If you would like to host a gathering, please let me know or speak with one of our
Deacons.
It has been such a blessing to serve as your pastor for the past six months, I am
eager to see what the future holds for us!
Grace and Peace,
Scott
DEACONS’ CORNER Happy February! The good news is that it’s the shortest month of the year! (Bad news, if you’re a skier or otherwise a winter person!)
The Diaconate continues to focus on welcoming all who enter our church and helping everyone to access the many blessings our church has to offer. One way we do this is by providing prayer request slips for those who would like to ask for the congregation’s prayers to be added to their own. The blue slips are a way to share our joys and our concerns.
Since we began having problems with our aging sound system, we have found it unwieldy (and sometimes impossible!) to get a functioning microphone to each congregant who wanted to share a prayer. Thus, the blue slips were created. We plan to make sure there are ample blue slips in the pew-pad binders for all who want them. We will also leave some in the narthex if you want to take one on your way in. They are collected by the ushers just prior to prayer time. Scott is happy to read your prayers aloud, and we have found that most folks are pleased with this new procedure. We welcome your participation in this important ministry!
Some good things to look forward to: (1) we will have photographers on hand after church on four Sundays in April to take pictures for our upcoming pictorial church directory. We will print the directory in-house; no hard-sell, no expense to individuals. (2) Scott is planning an exciting worship event for the Sunday after Easter. Stay tuned!
Thanks and blessings, Dan Carter and Nadine Russell, Co-chairs

Johnson Atkinson Fund 2020
The Johnson - Atkinson Fund is a gift given to First Parish to inspire and support development
of church ventures and to facilitate spiritual growth. It is intended to serve as a catalyst for new
energy and commitment to grow in the knowledge and love of God in Christ and radiate God's
love in an ever-changing world. We are thankful for the thoughtfulness of this gift from Bill and
Mary Johnson who established this fund for the church.
Any church group, member, or staff of First Parish is eligible to fill out an application (found on
the FP website). The Johnson - Atkinson Fund Team will review the applications and
determine the recipient(s). The funds may be distributed annually or biannually, dependent on
the committee's judgment and fund balances. The fund is not intended to support the annual
budget of the church, personnel costs, or cost of operations.
Examples of Fundable Ventures:
● Meet emerging professional development and/or retraining needs of Church Staff.
● Support training programs and conferences for teachers or volunteers undertaking new
tasks.
● Enhance the music program by providing training for directors, sponsoring special guests,
concerts and musical experiences.
● Explore new means and relationships to involve youth with the Church and in servicing
others.
● Support creation of special events to promote spiritual growth within the Church
community.
● Development of Church fellowship groups.
● Develop ongoing programs and activities for assimilation of new members.
● Explore and provide materials to foster individual and family meditation. Update the
Church library for the use of the staff and congregation at large.
There are two times each year when funding can be requested: February 28 and September
28. We encourage anyone who is interested in applying to go to the First Parish website and fill
out the application. We are hoping to be able to fund many requests, as generous funds will
be available in 2020.

Cherub Choir
The cherub Choir continues to enjoy music and movement with Miss Delaney after church
every Sunday except the first Sunday of the month. Activities include bubble songs, silly
rhymes and singing, scarf play, hoop play, instrument exploration, storytime, and of
course preparation for singing during worship. If you are new to the church and have
little ones ages baby-5, please come check it out! If your children have been attending
regularly and you aren’t on my email list, please be in touch.
JUNIOR CHOIR NEWS The Junior Choir had a very busy December. On a very cold December day, the Junior Choir, parents and grandparents walked to The Landing, a memory-care facility on Main Street. We sang many of our favorite Christmas carols and the 20 twenty residents sang right along with us. It was so heartwarming. We were able to reach back into their memory bank and find the carols they had learned so long ago. The Junior Choir members also made Christmas cards for each of the residents. The smiles on all the faces was priceless. It is a wonderful experience for our choir children to be able to give to others with their music and their gifts. The Junior Choir sang in the Christmas Pageant amongst all the sheep, cows and donkeys. We sang Angels We Have Heard on High, Go Tell it on the Mountain, and Away in a
Manger. They did double-duty as angels, shepherds, the Holy Family and innkeepers. We also sang for the Family Christmas Eve service. The children dressed in their Christmas finery and there were sparkles left everywhere in their wake. It was a wonderful service for the children and their families. In January, we have been rehearsing every Thursday, except for one snow day. We are preparing for Love Sunday, February 16th and already thinking about Easter. Never a dull moment with Junior Choir. We welcome new singers at any time. Come join us!!! Junior Choir Director, Susan Marston
PRAYER MINISTRY NEWS
Prayer time can be anything we make it. Some of my best prayers come as I walk the beach at low tide. For some it might be a walk in the woods and for others in a quiet corner listening to soft music. For others it might be a church sanctuary in that quiet time before the service starts.
I love the line in the play Fiddler on the Roof “from your mouth to God’s ear.” May God hear what I/you have to say and act upon it. That is a phrase expressing a wish that the desires of the person to whom the saying is spoken will come true.
We are in hopes that when we pray that prayer will be heard by God and answered. And so I believe that with prayer comes waiting and we better be ready for that. With prayer also comes the need to be patient. When we pray we are on God’s time.

Day of Service
January 20, 2020
Not A Day Off, But A Day On
Life’s most urgent question
is?
“What are you doing for others?”
-Martin Luther King
Our 12th annual MLK Day of Service has
come and gone but what a GREAT day it
was. In spite of record cold temperatures
and a major snow storm Saturday into
Sunday approximately 120 “clients” came
through our doors for some kind of service
provided. We had over 75volunteers
helping with food, being host/hostess,
organizing clothes, shoes, toiletries, books
and even two Therapy Dogs, Professor and
Scotch, who just made everything better.
From haircuts to foot care, BP checks to
vision screenings Also donations of New
underwear and socks, clothes and jackets to
health and beauty items to nail polishing and
head checks. First Parish Shoe Ministry
found boots/shoes for 71 pairs of feet.
Books, puzzles, games and toys were a BIG
hit this year. So many donations. Twelve
youth participated in service projects. In the
4 hours our doors were open and services
provided:
40 Haircuts/Head Checks, 8 seen by a
Visiting Nurse for foot care and 14 eye
exams, 9 Blood Pressures taken and 8 loads
of laundry done. Over 100 people were fed-
Thank you to Sue Burgess and the food
crew. We did all of this with a smile on our
faces and a compassionate heart.
This year our youth initiated a program
named, Heathy Body, Mind and Soul. With
this initiative came a $600 mini grant from
Volunteer Maine. Thank you to our Senior
High Class, their teachers, Karen Brann and
Brian Doyle along with parent helpers,
Jennifer and Nathan Poore. The youth
handed out 50 bags with fruits and veggies,
cleaning supplies (Kleenex, disinfecting
wipes, toilet paper, hand soap etc) and
made up laminated breathing/stress reducing
info. Also included was a list of area
resources for food, warming centers etc.
If you have some great ideas for donations,
service providers, food etc, just GO FOR IT.
Thank you to ALL the people who helped
by being at the event, by bringing in
donations, by being a provider. The day was
amazing. Please check out our Face Book
page. We did get a wonderful write up in
the Courier and received a lovely laminated
poster of the article by one of the buses of
our PreK classes. Thank you bus #759
Another great quote from MLK is this:
“Everybody can be great … because
anybody can serve. You don’t have to
have a college degree to serve. You don’t
have to make your subject and verb agree
to serve. You only need a heart full of
grace. A soul generated by love.”
--Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
We did that at MLK Day of Service. We
did it in spite of the cold temperatures and
the snow and the people came. We just did
it!
Next MLK Day will
be January 18, 2021
During the season of Lent, we walk with Jesus and the
disciples toward Jerusalem. The tension and the anguish
increase with every step. This study will be based upon my
study tour to Israel and will combine scripture readings with
the images that I shot. We will see the places where Jesus
walked, preached and performed miracles. The study is
designed to help bring the words of scripture to life as we
journey.
Pastor Scott
THE IMPORTANCE OF HOSPITALITY
Every church desires to be a warm and welcoming congregation. During the Biblical era,
hospitality was an important part of communal life. A host was required to offer hospitality.
Everything that we do at the church has a hospitality component. Worship, fellowship, the
way that we maintain the property all play a part in the welcome that we extend.
Here are a few rules to remember when it comes to offering hospitality:
1. Hospitality begins and ends at the curb. If you are able, leave the parking spots closest
to the building for guests and visitors.
2. Greet people on their way into the building AND as they leave. Make eye contact and
smile!
3. Engage one another. If you see someone standing or sitting alone … whether long-time
member or first-time visitor … join them. Sit with them and talk with them.
4. Be inviting. Visitors and those new to the church do not know how things work or
what special events may be happening. Invite them to join you for coffee hour or for
an upcoming event.
5. Be willing to step outside of your comfort zone. Be willing to approach someone that
you do not recognize.
6. Do not conduct business. We all want to cluster in little “work” groups during coffee
hour. Instead, use the time to get to know one another.
7. Wear your nametags. It is not easy to remember two hundred … or more … names.
Wearing your nametags helps new members as well as visitors.
All of these tips are little things that make a big difference. A little welcome goes a long
way.

In the early 1980’s, I was a single mother. Even then I went to First Parish. Rick Huleatt was our minister
and we sponsored a Cambodian family, who ended up coming to Saco after they had walked through the
jungles of Cambodia to escape the Pol Pot regime. Their Husband and Father had been assassinated.
As a church family we pooled our skills and resources. The community helped out as well. In our homes we
found clothes, furniture, linens, and kitchen utensils. Corleen Garland oversaw their health, finding
physicians that also could help at no cost. One was Dr. Ed Hirst, a dentist in Biddeford who freely gave his
time and talent. We found an apartment for them and helped until they could work and/or receive aid from
federal sources.
I asked them to supper one night after they had been here a very short time. The older sister had studied
English, but still it was rough going. The mother knew no English. The two sons knew even less English
than the sister. After we ate the mother, daughter and I settled in the living room to “talk”. The boys went
outside with my children where they played a game of ball.
I was touched as the mother and I looked at each other. There seemed to be both a sadness and love as I
looked into her eyes. I wanted to connect with her. And suddenly as that thought came into my mind I
remembered the game “Connect 4.” The purpose is to connect four like colored discs in a straight line, as
they are dropped into a grid where they pile on top of each other. The mother and daughter took no time at
all to catch on and we laughed and enjoyed the moment, as we connected the discs and started to connect
our lives.
The boys were Seno, Sona. The sister was Linda Jenny and the mother Nom Nay. They enrolled in ESL.
The boys worked at the church as janitors - being from a Buddhist tradition they were distressed that people
would walk on the church floors they had just cleaned! Oh, my, we had a lot to learn about cultural
differences!
As time evolved, the sister fell in love and married a Cambodian man who lived and worked in Washington
DC. At that point the family was moving to Washington. However, the three boys were given the option to
finish school at TA, and follow their sister and mother later. They wanted to stay. The church stood ready to
help. The boys needed homes. Seno lived with the Curtis family on Elm St and Sona in my home on
Summer St.
About 12 - 15 years ago, I had lost touch with them. Then one Sunday, about a year ago, Corleen said she
had heard from them and they wanted to be in touch with me. She asked if it was OK to give them my
phone number. I was delighted, Late in Dec about 10 PM, my phone rang, scrolling across where it would
usually give a phone number, it said, “Australia.” I answered. It was Sona. We talked and talked. He
repeatedly said, “I want you to come and visit me”. In my mind I thought, “a visit to Australia is not likely
to happen. "As the conversation drew to an end, he said there was one last thing, “Could you give me Mr.
Curtis’s phone number?”
At that I just started to laugh, as I said, “He is right here in bed with me.” Life is NOT what we expect! I
would never have dreamed back in the 80’s, that life would circle around in that way. Sona now face times
once or twice a week. When we went to Florida last winter we stopped and visited with Seno and Linda
Jenny. We were all in tears. Nom Nay is still alive and now 90. And even more amazing, Phil and I are
going to Cambodia this winter to see the country they are from. We are also going to visit Sona in Sydney,
Australia!
Life is not what we expect
And it is best, when we share what we have
Life is not what we expect by Dolly Curtis
My name is Linda. I was born in Cambodia. My family and I endured the hardships of war in Cambodia, under the Khmer Rouge. We knew, in order to survive, that we had to leave our country.
In 1980, my Mother, my two brothers and I were honored and privileged to be sponsored to come to the United States of America by loving and generous families who were members of the First Parish Congregational Church. The gratitude that we feel to the families who sponsored us is unmeasurable! Our lives were changed, blessed and bettered in America!
Today, my Mother is 90 years old and is enjoying her retirement from being a seamstress for an interior designer. One of my brothers is a Civil Engineer in VA and my other brother is a National Manager of a company in Australia. I am a pharmacy manager in Washington DC. There is no doubt that we wouldn’t have had the opportunities in Cambodia that we have had living in America. We are truly grateful for all of the families from the First Parish Congregational Church who have loved and supported us throughout all of these years!
May God richly bless all of you!!
