FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Fall 2016 The Messenger I can relate to the workers in retail stores. Although frigid cold with no leaves on the trees, it is time for them to put out the displays of shorts and swimsuits. Here we are—still July—and I am trying to gain perspective for the September newsletter. I can say that our first month at FUMC Siler City has been a very busy one. On the personal side, we have been unloading, unpacking and finding the place for everything(yes, some items relegated to the attic, some to charitable agencies and some in the cart to the curb.) Thankfully, life here is coming together and beginning to feel like home. In that vane, thank you all for wel- coming us and making us feel at home in Siler City from the first moment we arrived. We have found great people and a great place to be in ministry and to live. So far, we have been busy figuring out the whos, whats, whens and wheres of life and work in Siler City. There is much to build upon. The facilities of the church are absolutely beautiful and are top notch”. The building and grounds reflect a pride and devotion to your faith in God. Now that we are settling in, the coming months will give us the opportunity to examine our needs and programming. The first and most important consideration is to reflect and be in service to God. We can see how to best utilize the gifts of the people, the pastor and the resources of the church. One thing that I have identified as a need is a new church directory. The membership photo- graphs need to be updated. Perhaps even more important, the directory information—address, cell phones numbers, emails—need attention. In just the six years since the last directory, there has been a huge increase in the reliance upon cell phones and emails. Having up-to-date photos and contact information will be a great help in communication within the church. Other matters include establishing and building a mens ministry and youth program. We will be listening and entertaining ideas of needs and direction. I know that summer is a time of interrup- tions, and activities are not a a normal pace. As we move toward fall, we will be looking at areas of fellowship and spiritual development. We are looking forward to being a part of your lives and fulfilling Gods call with you in Siler City. I would ask that you be in prayer for Gods vision, wisdom and power to achieve his will in our small but important part of the world. Love and Grace, Carl Pastors Ponderings

From July 24th Church Service:

“When we hate our enemies, we give them power over us—power over our sleep, our appetites and our happiness. They would dance for joy if they knew how much they were upsetting us. Our hate is not hurting them at all, but it is turning our own days and nights into a hellish turmoil.”

Update - Summer SNACK program

(Summer Nutritional Assistance for Chatham Kids)

If you have dropped by the church on Wednesday this summer, chances are you have seen a large quanti-ty of rice, beans, canned food and fresh produce in our Fellowship Hall. We are partnering with the CORA

Food Pantry to provide food assistance to qualifying children during the summer.

CORA brings a truck filled with food every two weeks. Our volunteers are here moving food from storage and then packaging. After our team gets the food ready for distribution, the families arrive for pickup. Each

child receives a two week supply of rice, beans, canned goods and fresh vegetables.

The families are referred by Chatham County schools and the cost is covered by CORA. Our church volun-teers provide the muscle and the brains. Along with helping organize the food, Mary DeAngelo keeps de-tailed records of each recipient's food allocation and the number of families served. Mike DeAngelo is our muscle and organizes the many, many volunteers. A special FUMC Shout Out of appreciation to all those who have helped make this endeavor possible. A recent pick up night shows that we served 162 children!

What CORA Food Pantry says about this program. Did you know that 50% of public school children in Chatham County receive free or low cost meals through

the federal school lunch program because their family income is at or near poverty level? That’s 4,525 Chatham County school children who will likely not have adequate replacements for these

meals during the summer. Because Chatham is a large rural county with scant public transportation, serv-ing prepared meals at a central location are not practical here in the summer for the families of these kids. A new kind of program was needed to better ensure accessibility and to address the transportation difficul-ties of those families who needed services. CORA Food Pantry created SNACK in 2009 to address these-challenges and to help assure adequate nutrition year-round. Last summer, CORA distributed food to 1040 hungry kids. Client identification and enrollment: Families with children who receive free or reduced lunch enroll their eligible children to collect food from their choice of 16 distribution sites located throughout the county. CORA Food Pantry oversees management of SNACK . Chatham County Schools & the Dept. of Social Services help to enroll and qualify eligible children. Are organizations and churches distribute food

once every two week to nearby families.

Adopting one child won’t change the world, but for that child, the world

will change.

We are excited to announce our expansion into private adoption services at Methodist Home for Children. We have experienced, compassionate staff who work to connect expecting birth parents with families looking to adopt an in-fant. We make a lifelong commitment to the children who come into our care, and we walk alongside our birth and adoptive parents throughout this process. Our services include:

• Pregnancy counseling for birth mother • Counseling for birth parents • Adoptive parent education • Home studies or updates • Coordination of adoptive and birth family meetings • Child placement • Adoption finalization • Post-placement support

Confidentiality is one of the first criteria we use in connecting birth parents and adoptive families, with choices available for a confidential, semi-open or open adoption. Identifying infor-mation is not shared unless both parties agree to do so.
