“Different Kinds of Seed”
Back in the 1910’s and 1920’s, a
Congregational minister names William E.
Barton delighted thousands of readers
with a news-paper column he wrote under
the name of Safed the Sage. Safed, with
his Ever-Sensible Wife Keturah, spoke with
wit and wisdom on this life. In this season of
planting, I share this delightful tidbit with
you…
We made a garden, I and Keturah.
And we made a Place for Flowers, and a
Place for Vegetables. And wherever there
was Room, there I did plant an Hollyhock.
And we made a Bed, with Straight
Rows across it, three hand-breadths apart,
which is two parts of a Cubit. And in the
Rows I planted Seed which I had bought
from the Vendor. And when the Envelope
wherein the Seed came was Empty, then I
did drive a Stake at the end of the Row,
and thereon I Stuck the Envelope.
And Keturah asked me, saying, Canst
thou not remember that there be Three
Rows of Radishes, and Two of Lettuce, and
One of Onions, and the Rest?
And I said, The Seeds are many and
they are very Small. We must not expect
Too Much of them. How can each Seen
know what it is to be? But now it shall
know. For if it cannot Read English, then
may it look on the Envelope and say,
Behold! I am to be like unto that Picture,
and my name is Turnip.
And Keturah said, It is for thyself thou
dost place the Envelope so, that thou
mayest know the Plants from the Label
and conceal thine own Ignorance.
And I said, O Keturah, What is all the
Wisdom in the World save this, that by
some Tag or Label placed here and there
at the end of the Row, they that are
Wise conceal their Ignorance?
So I entered into mine House, and I
sat me down, for I was weary, and I
meditated that God needeth not the
Labels to remind Him what each seed
shall produce. And I marveled at the
Miracle of Life that, that every Seed
doth bring forth after its Kind, so that
even the Grain of Mustard Seed hath in
it a Great Tree, and every package of
Seed doth contain the Memory of God,
yea, and every tiniest Seed the
Veracity of God.
Now this Human Life is an Envelope,
containing the Seed of a Nature which
though it be mine own I understand but
little. And I dimly Comprehend the
Implications of Mine Own Soul when it
seeketh to rise a little space above the
Ground, and put forth Blossoms and
Fruit. But I have felt within me Strong
Impulses which Lift me Upward, and
fashion Better Hope in ways Higher
than mine own Understanding. And it
doth not appear what I shall be, but
some things I know.
…What shall we become- as
individuals, as a community of faith?
We don’t know, and even our most
studied forecast will, no doubt, be off-
mark. But God knows. It is God’s life
that gives us life, and God’s growth
that gives us change. And what we
shall become is in the Hands of a Love
greater than our wildest imagining.
Can we trust God for the fruit that shall
arise from our humble seed? Can you
trust God with your life? You might as
well, for the Envelope is in God’s back
pocket!
In Christ’s love,
Pastor Hawkins

Singing Bowl for MAY and JUNE... On a Sunday morning in January Cheryl
and Jeffrey Coopman of Pleasant Prairie,
WI where shopping at Festival Foods in
Racine. They were walking to their car
when a young person who had stolen a
car, resulting in a high-speed police
chase turned into the parking lot of
Festival Food, striking Cheryl and Jeffrey
as they were walking to their vehicle. Cheryl lost her leg
and hand and both have had numerous surgeries and
will continue to need future surgeries. If this isn’t bad
enough, the Coopmans lost their only daughter in
September 2017 and are raising her 3 year old child..
Cheryl and Jeffery are facing extreme financial hardship
with all of their medical expenses, past, current and
future plus the inability to work while raising a 3-year-old
toddler.
Our loose change offerings in May and June will go to the
Coopmans. If you have a desire to contribute directly to
their Go Fund Me account (set up by their niece), the link
is https://www.gofundme.com/50g549k.
MISSIONS OF EMMANUEL
We successfully completed
our second host week in
2018 for four families,
totaling 14 people, April 15. One family moved to an
awaiting home in Louisiana in the middle of the week.
The parents were busy during the week working, getting
their children to school and looking for suitable housing.
Finding affordable housing often is the most challenging
piece of the puzzle. One of the fathers stated that Family
Promise helps take the edge off the many pressures they
face at this time in their lives. All our guests expressed
gratitude for all we do for them. “Thank you” to the many
people who contributed to the success of that host week.
(Side note: It would help if all the cooks would share their
menu plans prior to the host week so that our guests will
not be eating the same entrée twice that week.)
Mark your calendars:
Next host week: July 29 – August 5.
Family Promise Golf Outing – July 14, 2018

Lawn mowing season is right
around the corner! The church
lawn is mowed by volunteer
labor each year....won’t you
help?? The church provides the
mower and gas. Please speak to Tom Stelling to
volunteer.
Have you signed up to be a Sunday Greeter lately?
Greeters arrive by 9 AM and stand in the Gathering Area,
just inside the front entry doors welcoming worshipers as
they arrive.
Our church building is also cleaned by volunteer labor
each month. Have you volunteered this year? 2 or 3 hours
once a year is all we need from you! Please help keep
the church looking nice.
Precious Metals: aluminum
(cans and other), brass, copper
Place your donations (in plastic bags)
in front of the garage. Ron Blaschuk
and Tom Stelling are kind enough to
take them in for recycling, which
benefits Emmanuel.
The kiosk in the church foyer has drawers labeled for
different things we collect on an ongoing basis. It’s a
great way to get rid of unneeded items and help out at
the same time:
Grocery receipts from Albrecht’s Sentry store in
Delafield. We receive a rebate of the total receipts
we submit. Those rebates help our bottom line!
Empty printer ink cartridges either go to Dousman
Elementary or are turned in at Office Max to earn
credit for any Emmanuel purchases.
First Aid items/new toothbrushes/OTC pain meds
(unopened) are given to the Free Clinic in
Oconomowoc.
Used cellphones and chargers are sold on eBay with
proceeds benefiting our bottom line.
Used eye glasses are given to the Dousman Lions
Club: throughout the year, Lions, Leos and other
volunteers collect used eyeglasses and deliver them
to regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers (LERCs).
LERC volunteers clean, sort by prescription strength
and package the glasses. Recycled glasses are
distributed to people in need in low and middle
income communities where they will have the
greatest impact.
Also located in the foyer is our Food Pantry Bin. The first
Sunday of each month is the designated day to bring
donations of non-perishables & paper products for the
Kettle Moraine Food Pantry. THANK YOU to Sharon Perez
who faithfully loads your donations into her vehicle each
month and takes them to the Pantry.

Sisters and Brothers in Christ:
What are we to do when social and political storm waves
break across the bow of our church, threatening to
swamp not only our peace and tranquility but also our
vitality as a faith community?
Should we dive under the pews and hope the storm
passes quickly by? Or, are we called to a different
response? If the latter, how do we engage in dialogue
with one another to discern the proper response without
adding to the division and chaos that threatens to engulf
us?
The 2018 Annual Meeting of the Wisconsin Conference of
the United Church of Christ will seek to address these very
questions. With the theme, "Why are we afraid? The Winds
and Waves of Race and Privilege," our guiding scripture
is:
But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they
woke him up and said to him, 'Teacher, do you not care
that we are perishing?' He woke up and rebuked the
wind, and said to the sea, 'Peace! Be still!' Then the wind
ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them,
'Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?' And they
were filled with great awe and said to one another, 'Who
then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?'
Mark 4: 38-41
It is my privilege to invite you to gather as the Wisconsin
Conference at the Green Lake Conference Center on
June 8-10, 2018. Our Keynote Speaker will be Rev. Traci
Blackmon, who is the Executive Minister of Justice & Local
Church Ministries for The United Church of Christ and
Senior Pastor of Christ the King United Church of Christ in
Florissant, MO. She will preach Friday night and deliver her
keynote address on Saturday.
Hope to see you on the beautiful shore of Green Lake in

Congregational Care Gift Cards
SCRIP ordering day (first Sunday of each month), is a
GREAT time to help Pastor Nansi bolster her
Congregational Care supply of gas and grocery gift
cards. For grocery cards, we suggest purchasing them at
Aldi. The grocery dollar goes father there than anywhere
else. Unfortunately, Aldi cards are not available through
the SCRIP program, so if it’s SCRIP you’re choosing, we
suggest Walmart cards. We ask that all cards purchased
for Congregational Care use be in increments of $25.
