When I was preparing for my thirty day Ignatian retreat five years ago, I was most concerned about the week in the spiritual exercises where I would have to pray the passion. I feared that I would experience it as the ultimate sadness to see my own limits and realize what a disappointment I must be. The grace of that time was exactly the opposite. I recently sent a reflection I wrote of that time to a good friend who is currently praying the exercises. It was a timely reminder of what a gift Lent and Holy Week can be. I wrote at the completion of my time, “In this time I have seen the Passion of Christ with very different eyes. I had a deep sense of Christ’s love for me and all of us each step of the way. Fully knowing we would run away and desert him, he spent his time teaching and loving us. At the time of the Resurrection, he comes offering peace and an invitation to live without fear. There are no recriminations but an invitation to abandonment and joy.” My hope for each of us and the community of St. Mark’s is that as we enter Lent, we give ourselves the time and opportunity to fully steep ourselves in the gift of Jesus Christ. It will put us in a beautiful place to experience the joy of resurrection in a new way. Peace, Beth+

Preparing to

Walk the Way of Lent

I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word. - Ash Wednesday Liturgy BCP

Each year out liturgical rhythms give us an opportunity to pause and reflect on how to deepen our Christian faith journey. It is often an invitation to re-center ourselves in the mystery of Christ. Lent is one of my favorite seasons as we gather as a community on Ash Wednesday to support one another as a community in acts of self examination. It is through these acts we repent, or turn, again towards the grace of God. When I first joined the Episcopal church I had a very negative view of repentance and so Lent seemed a bit difficult at first. It seemed like a chance to engage in self-hate or criticism to make myself smaller before God. I had struggled with self-confidence enough in my early adulthood that this seemed like an invitation I could easily refuse. What has become a great gift of my own journey is coming to see these opportunities as anything but diminishing. They have been an opportunity to re-order myself in relation to my loving creator. If I think I am supposed to accomplish everything on my own and then become frustrated with a lack of confidence to do so, there is a need for reconnecting with God. Not because I have gotten overly cocky (though that is always a possibility!), but rather because I have taken on burdens that much more comfortably reside with God. When I was preparing for my thirty day Ignatian retreat five years ago, I was most

concerned about the week in the spiritual exercises where I would have to pray the passion. We received a wonderful response from this community as we ended 2014 and continue to plan for 2015. We were blessed by many generous gifts as people came forward to ensure a strong beginning for the New Year. We not only overcame our projected financial deficit, we ended with a surplus of $50,378. Below is the budgeted financial report for December 2014 and 2014 year-to-date.

This year, we are offering a Wednesday Evening Lenten Series. Lent will begin with Ash Wednesday on February 18th. Services will be held at 7:00am, Noon, and 7:00pm. Each succeeding Wednesday night in Lent, we will offer Holy Eucharist at 5:30pm, followed by optional dinner in Café Kairos at 6:00pm. At 6:30, we will have a different speaker each week who will lead us in reflecting on our theme, Walking the Way of the Cross.

February 25 ···· The Rev. Beth Knowlton March 4 ········· The Rev. Mary C. Earle March 11 ······· James R. Dennis, O.P. March 18 ······· The Rev. Carol Morehead March 25 ······· The Rev. Dr. John Lewis

Lent is a time to shine the light of Christ into our lives and to consider those things that have kept us from being one with God and with one another. This season of 40 days is like a tithe of the days of a year; it is one way of giving ourselves back to God. Each day in Lent is an invitation to ancient spiritual practices which have illumined and guided the paths of Christians along the way. These disciplines invite the Holy Spirit to be present anew in our lives, opening our eyes to God’s presence in and through us.

An Invitation to a Holy Lent: Walking the Way of the Cross

Café Kairos during Lent

We have asked our wonderful kitchen staff to prepare a supper of soup and salad in keeping with the simplicity of Lent and the call to give ourselves to God. This simple meal invites us to reflect on God’s bounty to us as well as our need for God and the need in the world around us. A simple meal, without dessert, will help us remember those who have less and remind us to rely on God. We will charge the normal amount for the meal and donate anything beyond the cost of the meal to our local charities that help those with less.

Café Kairos Menus for Lent: Feb. 25 ·········· Savory Beef soup, tossed salad, yeast rolls March 4-5 ······ Potato Chowder, garden salad, focaccia bread March 11-12 ··· Chicken noodle soup, tossed salad, biscuits March 18-19 ··· Italian white bean soup, Caesar salad, garlic

bread sticks March 25-26 ··· Chicken & Dumplings, garden salad, Sister

Shubert’s rolls April 1-2 ······· Mexican corn soup, tossed salad, tortillas

One Body, Many Menus

B eginning in March we will begin with our small group gatherings, One Body, Many

Menus. We plan to hold 20 gatherings in 2015, with 10 gatherings from March to May, and 10 more in the fall. Gatherings will consist of no more than 25 people. Through these gatherings, St. Mark’s members will have the opportunity to: Get to know our new rector, the Rev. Beth Knowlton. Beth will attend each gathering and lead the group in discussions that will enrich our experiences as members and help us to understand how we fit into St. Mark’s.

Get to know each other. Meeting in these small group settings will allow us to deepen our relationships with other members. We hope that these conversations will encourage members to share our stories and give us a chance to learn from and be inspired by one another. Reflect on St. Mark’s vision, as expressed in our core vocation. We will reflect on ways that St. Mark’s feeds our minds, bodies, and souls. Together, groups will envision how St. Mark’s can continue to live into this core vocation of

feeding the hungry with real food, feeding those hungry for knowledge and meaning, and feeding those hungry for beauty and creativity. Thanks to our Stewardship Co-Chairs: Robert and Shea Pollom, George and Jill Vassar, Ed Rieke, and Ann Coiner. They are well underway in planning these gatherings, which will take place in a variety of homes throughout the wider San Antonio area where our members live. Be on the lookout for dates and how to register in the coming weeks.

O ur many Spring opportunities continue, inviting us to grow in our life together as disciples of Christ. With offerings including Sunday mornings, mid-week studies, and weekend retreats and retreat days,

2015 promises to truly offer us the opportunity to live into part of our core vocation: to feed those who hunger for wisdom and knowledge. For more details, see the website or email Carol.
