From the Rector: A New PriestI am delighted to announce that Broderick Greer will be coming to Grace-St. Luke's to serve as our new priest. Broderick comes to us from Virginia Theological Seminary (Katherine Bush's seminary) and from the Diocese of West Tennessee, his sponsoring diocese.

Over the course of several face to face meetings and interviews with Broderick, I knew that I had met a future priest whose gifts, intellect, and trust in Christ would inspire our parish. Broderick also spent time with our senior warden in 2014, Antoinette Cheney, as well as a few other members of the vestry and parish. All of us sensed the same thing: Broderick will bring many gifts to GSL Church and School, and we will offer to him the support and opportunities that a highly motivated young priest seeks.

Importantly, I want you to know what I was looking for in a new curate. First, I always look for a person who is faithful to the mystery of Christ's presence in Word and Sacrament. Our priests need to trust that Christ, ultimately, is the one who is the "Great Shepherd of Souls," in the words of the Prayer Book. Second, I know that all of us need a priest whose gifts and personality bring something to the table that neither the Reverend Gayle McCarty nor I do. GSL is a parish that enjoys having three different priests with different gifts. Finally, I know we need a priest who, in addition to the ordinary work of every parish (from liturgy to pastoral care), can oversee our work with young adults, Episcopal Service Corps, and school chapel. In Broderick, I am very confident that we have found the right person. I am also very grateful that Canon Chip Davis and Bishop Don Johnson from the diocese linked me with Broderick.

Broderick will not begin work until July of this year, but I am happy to announce his appointment at this time. His bio and a picture are found below. Please keep him in your prayers and know that GSL is in his.

A Brief Bio from BroderickBroderick Greer is a graduating senior at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia, where various study programs have taken him to Jerusalem, Israel; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; and Rome, Italy. Prior to seminary, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in social work from Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tennessee. While completing his undergraduate studies, Broderick was confirmed in the Episcopal Church by Bishop Don Johnson at St. Luke's in Jackson.

A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Broderick's writings have been featured at Religion News Service and The Huffington Post. Most recently, he has facilitated conversations and workshops on human rights, diversity, and the role of social media in Christianity. Broderick finds joy in traveling, barbecue (Memphis pulled pork and Texas brisket), making music with his friends, and visiting his family. His parents, Roderick and Patricia, and brother, Patrick, all reside in Fort Worth.

GSL Women’s Retreat: "Letting Go for Lent"Feb. 27–Mar. 1Facilitator: Linda Douty

Register TODAY: www.gracestlukes.org/events/womens-retreat

Lent is about more than giving up chocolate!Lent can be the beginning of a New You!

Lent is a time to take stock—a time to offer ourselves to God’s guid-ance and to participate in our own spiritual deepening. And that means discovering what is standing in our way and letting it go.

We never seem to run out of things to let go:* Sometimes we need to let go of a person in order to move on* Sometimes we cling to a role that no longer suits us* Sometimes it’s a point of view or a pattern that blocks our

growth* Sometimes our limited dreams keep us from joining the Divine

dream for us* Sometimes we must let go of who we think we are in order to

become who we truly are

Weaving together the letting go stories in her own life with those of others, Linda will help us dig out not only our humorous control issues, but our more serious barriers to a deeper relationship with God, self and others.

As we explore new and unusual Lenten practices that assist the let-ting go process, we will be set free to participate fully in the resur-rection of new life on Easter morning. Plan to join us.

Scout Sunday 2015

Sunday, Feb. 8, Grace-St. Luke’s, along with churches worldwide, will be recognizing Scouts during their church services. Please join us at our 10:30 service as we give thanks for the Scouts of GSL (past and present) and their leaders.

A little Troop 34 history and current newsBoy Scout Troop 34 was founded in 1920 at Calvary Episcopal Church in downtown Memphis. After spending a year at Bellevue Baptist Church, the Troop moved to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in 1933 and subsequently to Grace St. Luke’s. Troop 34 is a large and active troop, camping or hiking every month of the year. This past year on their campouts they have fly fished, shot, hiked, inner tubed, climbed, and canoed. In addition to weekend trips, the Troop attends two weeks of summer camp, 4 days of winter camp, and a high adventure base most years. This year’s high adventure trip is backpacking in the mountains of New Mexico at Philmont Scout Ranch. Troop 34 is known for producing a high percentage of qual-ity Eagle Scouts leading it to be nicknamed by some as “The Eagles Nest.” This year the Boy Scouts helped with the outreach project, GraceBuilders, and have undertaken a food drive.

In February, we have reserved two more Sundays for making small contributions to this special day. Parents and grandparents, please encourage your children to join Ms. Julie and me in Room 212 after the 10:30 service to work on these special projects, and help share the love with people in our community who are in need. Planning a Graceful ExitFebruary/March Rector's Forum

We make dinner plans. We make vacation plans. We make college, wedding, and house plans. We try to plan for the best life possible. Yet, despite our penchant for planning, we put off contemplating the final chapters of our lives—the plans that will allow us to live well until the end of life, with peace of mind and without crisis.

Join us as we explore financial, spiritual, and medical issues we all encounter at the end of life. While it can be difficult to think of the end of our lives when we’re in the midst of living, thoughtful and prayerful consideration of these issues can help us work toward the graceful exit we desire.

The Virgin Mary: Examining the Evidence from Scripture and Tradition and Viewing Her as Prism for Understanding Her Son and OurselvesInstructor: Daniel Pigg

Perhaps the most mysterious and yet well-known figure in the Jesus story is the

Virgin Mary, his mother. Their stories are connected throughout, from conception to birth to death, even to her being with the disciples waiting for the Day of Pentecost. The gospels, the book of Acts, and Revelation include her life events and influences. After the 1st century AD, other texts developed about the Virgin Mary, although they were never recognized as sacred scripture. They did, however, influence her representation. Venerated by Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians, acknowledged by Episcopalians and Protestant Christians, the Virgin Mary is a figure deeply rooted in the enigma of the faith experience. That there is more in the Koran about her than in the New Testament suggests just how important she was to the late antique and medieval periods when Islam was developing. Medieval art in particular was fascinated with the representation of the Virgin Mary. Even if one looks at one of our Christmas hymns, “The snow lay on the ground,” there is a phrase “twas Mary virgin pure of holy Anne.” We see that the Church has itself adopted part of the mythology surrounding Mary. Churches have been named for her; devotions have developed around her role as intercessor. The last two decades have witnessed increasing interest in the Virgin Mary from all segments of the Christian community. During our study together, we will consider the following topics:

1. New Testament References to the Virgin Mary (The Gospels, Acts, and Revelation) [2/25]

2. Non-canonical stories about the Virgin Mary [3/4]3. The Koran’s representation of the Virgin Mary [3/18]4. Artistic (Middle Ages and Renaissance in particular) and modern

understanding of the Virgin Mary [3/25]

Bibles will be available for Week 1, text materials for Week 2 and 3 will be provided.

Text for the course: Marina Warner, Alone of All Her Sex: The Myth and the Cult of the Virgin Mary. New York. Vintage Books, 1983. (There will be assigned readings for each week from this text which will be provided.)

MOL (The Meaning of Life)Instructors: The Reverend Katherine Bush & Shari Ray

Katherine Bush and Shari Ray will lead a four week course based on their "Meaning of Life" class which they co-teach to seniors at St. Mary's Episcopal School. The group will engage in conversations on finding meaning in four areas: work, suffering, relationships, and experiences of joy.

Brief readings each week (and maybe just a bit of journaling) will be assigned to encourage everyone's full participation in the discussions.

Lenten ComplineFacilitator: June Averyt

During this busy time in this busy world, join others who seek a moment of quiet conversation, reflection, and compline. Each week a different brief reflective discussion will be facilitated and compline will be observed. This is a special, spiritual, and meditative way to

punctuate the week. Night Light: A Book of Nighttime Meditations by Amy E. Dean will be used and a copy of the text will be provided.

Dr. Bheki Khumalo Scholarship FundThe GSL Outreach Committee recently hosted Dr. Bheki Khumalo, and members of the West Tennessee Haiti Partnership, for a moving presentation & slide show detailing their surgical mission trips to Haiti.

Additionally, and with great excitement, the creation of the “Dr. Bheki Khumalo Scholarship Fund” was announced. This worthy scholarship will support travel costs for GSL parishioners, who will join a mission team to support St. Vincent’s School for Handicapped Children in Port au Price.

More information about the scholarship, GSL’s work in Haiti, and how we can make a difference to come!

Food pantry Facts by Juan Fuentes

Even though this is the February Messenger, it is the December report for the GSL Food Pantry, marking the end of a very busy year. In 2014 we served 2,212 individuals which included 806 households, 1,022 adults, 1,014 children, and 176 seniors. The support you provided with food donations and financial assistance and all the volunteer hours made this possible. It may be a little food pantry—but we all make it run smoothly and with a big heart. THANK YOU!

December Statistics:Number of Families served: 118 households which include 142 adults, 117 children, and 23 seniors

Volunteer hours: 25 hours which included 7 hours distributing food, 3.5 hours in food bank pick-ups and shelving, 14.5 shopping and shelving, 7.5 cleaning and organizing (not including the hours spent by volunteer packers)

Mark your calendar! The last Sunday of February—Feb. 22—is FOOD PANTRY SUNDAY! We are asking that you bring tuna, peanut butter, canned meats, veggies, toilet paper.

We welcome three new volunteers: Ann Ray, Nancy Edwards, & Debbie Whitlock, thank you for your support!

We need help on Mondays with the Food Bank pick-up and the shopping for needed items. Usually this is done between 9–11 am. If you can volunteer in the daytime, please let us know.

Volunteers are always needed! Call Happy Jones at 276-2136 or email [email protected].

Calling All Expectant Parents By Amanda McGriff

Co-coordinator, Pastoral Care

If you are expecting a baby (or grandbaby) in the near future, please let us know! We want to share in your joy but also hear from you how best we can provide support to you after the birth. We know that different parents have different needs, depending on family support, and there are a host of other factors unique to your situation such as whether this will be your first baby or your fourth and your desires for either privacy or community during this special time.

There are several ways in which we could assist you after your new addition arrives:• Bringing you a meal and a special gift from the parish at a time

when that would be most helpful to you• Arranging for clergy or a member of our pastoral care team to

visit you in the hospital or at your home to pray through the Prayer of Thanksgiving for the Birth or Adoption of a Child with you.

• Letting the parish know about the birth of your baby by reading his/her name during the Prayers of the People.

Please contact the Rev. Gayle McCarty at [email protected] or 359-4817 or to let us know about your happy news.

Have Flowers, Will TravelBy The Rev. Gayle McCarty

Sunday after Sunday, we are graced with the beauty of stunning altar flower arrangements for our worship services. We, in pastoral care, are committed to sharing the beauty and joy of these flowers with as many as possible as often as possible.

We have long made and will continue to make pastoral touches via delivery of flowers to parishioners who are sick, in the hospital, or unable to join us for church services.

Recently, we extended GSL’s reach into the greater community and shared flowers with the men and women of the Memphis Police Dept. assigned to the station around the corner on Union Avenue, to Caritas Village, and to the staff and volunteers at The Memphis Crisis Center. Our beautiful arrangements with a GSL note card expressing our thanks for their services were hand-delivered and met with surprise and smiles.

We plan to periodically deliver flowers and say thank you to our community neighbors as well as our outreach partners in ministry.

After all, to quote author/therapist Daphne Rose Kingma –

Saying thank you creates love.

May GSL be known for our pastoral care and grateful hearts.

Pastoral Care of Children Seminar: Sunday, February 8 Immediately after the 10:30 am service in McClure Hall

Have you ever wondered how to talk with your children about the death of a pet or loved one, a grandpar-ent with dementia, or the divorce of a friend's parents? The Rev. Brent Powell, director of chaplain services at St. Jude and Ashley Carr, CCLS, child life specialist at St. Jude, will walk us through the unique spiritual and developmental needs of children in these and other common pastoral care situations. When you reg-ister, you will be able to pose your own questions to the presenters, as well. Limited seating. Snacks will be provided, and childcare is available upon request. Sponsored by GSL's Pastoral Care Committee. To sign up and for more information, visit www.gracestlukes.org/events/pastoral-care-of-children-seminar.

It’s enrollment time! We are busy counting re-enrollment contracts now and preparing to send out new contracts to all the families we want to welcome to our community in the fall. Selected spots will still be available in some classes, so please encourage any of your friends who are looking at schools to contact us at [email protected] if they are interested in touring. Your positive word-of-mouth is a great help to us in promoting our program here at GSL!

Speaking of our program, we are pleased to announce some changes for the coming year. In SK, we are adjusting our dismissal times so that they match Grades 1–8. This allows us greater flexibility in continuing to enhance our outstanding SK program. We also have two new hires to announce. Beginning in June, we will bid farewell to current Head of Preschool Jennifer Vest, who is leaving to complete her doctorate program at Vanderbilt, and we will welcome a new Head of Preschool, Cynthia Burnett. Cynthia is a talented, experienced educator who comes to us from St. Martin’s Episcopal School in Atlanta. She will be a wonderful addition to our staff. This month, we are also pleased to welcome Kate Shelton as a new addition to our Development Department.

I want to say thanks again to everyone who attended the Lisa Lassandrello 5K race and our 8th Grade Italian Dinner in January. We are so grateful for your support of our school events!

February is a big month for our eighth graders, who embark on one of their most important culminating assignments at GSL—the Eighth Grade Independent Internship Project. In this program, eighth graders go on three-day business internships they have secured to put their critical-thinking and problem-solving skills to use in the workplace. This invaluable experience gives them an early opportunity to explore different career paths in the “real world,” and it is something we could not do without the support of the many people in this community who agree to mentor students at their place of business. These internships provide really important learning opportunities for our eighth graders, and we are proud to offer this unique and meaningful program as part of the curriculum here at GSL.

Please feel free to join us this month for our Middle School Second Trimester Art Show, which runs, Feb. 23-27. There is an opening reception Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 5 pm in our Anchor Center Upper Lobby Gallery. We look forward to seeing you!

Many thanks to GSL parishioner Juan Fuentes, who visited campus in January to talk to Cristina Michta's fifth grade Spanish students. He shared some interesting, inspiring stories about his experiences growing up in Chile and coming to the U.S. at 21 years old! He also thanked fifth graders for leading the school’s annual food drive, which benefited the Church Food Pantry.

Holy Baptism Scheduled

Baptism is the entry point for The Episcopal Church for adults, children and infants. If you have not been baptized or would like to schedule a baptism, we are happy to make arrangements for you. The next date for baptism is:

• Easter Vigil, April 4• Day of Pentecost, May 24. For more information and to schedule a baptism, contact Connie Johns, 272-7425, ext. 22, or [email protected].

Opportunity Available to Join an Altar Guild Team!

Altar Guild members work behind the scenes of every worship service, ensuring that everything, including altar vessels, linens and candles, is properly prepared. It is servant ministry to prepare our Lord’s Table for all services: our normal worship services, baptisms, weddings, funerals, and all other special occasions. The Altar Guild is composed of four teams of volunteers who serve for two weeks per session. Duties may include silver and brass polishing, care and cleaning of linens, and special efforts at Christmas and Easter.

Volunteers are especially needed at this time.
